Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress Overview
Let’s start off with a general overview of the Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress. This bed is 14 inches tall and includes five layers of foams, with a base layer containing seven inches of individually wrapped coils. The foams used to construct the Puffy Royal Hybrid include infused cooling foam, reflexive memory foam, climate comfort foam, and cloud air technology foam — all of which come together to create a softer-than-average bed that still includes enough stability to prevent you from “sinking” into its layers.
The Puffy Royal Hybrid is a bed-in-a-box mattress, so it will have to be unboxed at home. As with all bed-in-a-box mattresses, customers will need to wait at least 24–48 hours for this bed to fully decompress. You may detect a slight odor when unwrapping your brand-new Puffy Royal Hybrid, but if you unzip this mattress’s removable cover and leave it in a well-ventilated room, the smell should dissipate in about a day.

What Is the Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress Made Of?
Now, let’s dive into the mattress itself. The Puffy Royal Hybrid contains a mixture of memory foam layers and coils for an overall cradling, supportive feel. All of the Puffy Royal Hybrid’s foams offer zoned support, meaning that they’re firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders to provide targeted pressure relief and support. I also want to note that all of the foams used in the construction of the Puffy Royal Hybrid are CertiPUR-US® Certified, so they’re free of harmful chemicals and heavy metals.
Cover – This thin, breathable mattress cover doesn’t affect the overall feel of the Puffy Royal Hybrid too much, but the polyester fabric does do a strong job of dissipating body heat, which is a helpful addition for hot sleepers. This cover is also stain-resistant, removable, and machine washable.
Comfort Layer – Right below the cover is a layer of Infused Cooling Foam. This cooling layer provides really deep sinkage, helping sleepers to relax into the top layers of the Puffy Royal Hybrid. This foam is also infused with cooling beads, which help to prevent too much heat from getting trapped in this bed.
Contour Layer – This layer includes reflexive memory foam that creates a cushioning, contouring sensation in the Puffy Royal Hybrid. This memory foam layer is softer than average, with a slow response to pressure, accentuating the “sinking” feeling established by the top layer of Infused Cooling Foam. As an added plus, this reflexive foam is also infused with cooling gel.
Pressure Relief Layer – Below the memory foam layer, you’ll find a section of the brand’s Climate Comfort Foam. This material is firmer than the memory foam, and it has a quicker response to pressure. The Climate Comfort Foam is an interesting piece of technology — it’s resistant to temperature and humidity, helping sleepers to stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Transition Layer – Next up is a transition layer made from Cloud Air Technology Foam. This firmer support foam helps to ease the sleeper down onto the coil support layer below. This poly foam layer also adds a little responsiveness to the Puffy Royal Hybrid.
Base Layer – Below the foam layers is a seven-inch section of individually wrapped pocketed coils. These coils help to reduce motion transfer across the bed and offer a little bounce and responsiveness to the Puffy Royal Hybrid. This mattress also includes a Grip Base Cover that helps to keep your bed right where you want it.
Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress Firmness
One of the most important factors in choosing a new mattress is feel. This relates to how firm or soft a certain bed feels to a certain sleeper. Measuring mattress firmness is tricky because every sleeper perceives firmness differently — what feels firm to me might feel soft to you. How firm you find a mattress will depend on your body type, weight, and preferred sleeping positions. For context, I’m 5’10”, about 190 pounds, and prefer to sleep on my stomach.
To try and make the Puffy Royal Hybrid’s firmness rating as objective as possible, I asked some of my colleagues to help me test out and rate this mattress. I had each individual lie down on the Puffy Royal Hybrid, take in its overall feel, and then give it a score between 1 and 10. A score of 1 on the firmness scale equates to an especially soft mattress, and a score of 10 equates to an especially firm one. I then averaged all of these individual scores together to determine the Puffy Royal Hybrid’s overall firmness rating.
In the end, the Puffy Royal Hybrid received a 5.5 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. For reference, the industry standard for a medium-firm mattress is a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This means that the Puffy Royal Hybrid is definitely on the softer side. In general, this firmness level works best for side and back sleepers.

Sleeping Position and Body Weight
We recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 250 pounds).
As a general rule, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average weight sleepers and tend to sink into the mattress more.
As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.
Is the Puffy Royal Hybrid a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – Light back sleepers tend to feel mattresses as a bit firmer than advertised, so I think this bed is a great fit for these sleepers. Due to their light weight, these sleepers won’t sink into the Puffy Royal Hybrid as much as heavier sleepers. However, they should still receive a nice hugging sensation.
- Light Side Sleepers – I think that light side sleepers will appreciate the plush feel of the Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress as it contours to their body, relieving pressure around their shoulders and hips.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – While this mattress could feel firm enough for some lightweight stomach sleepers, I still recommend that the majority of these sleepers opt for a firmer mattress to avoid any sinkage at the hips, which can lead to back pain. Is the Puffy Royal Hybrid a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130–250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – I think average weight back sleepers will really enjoy the Puffy Royal Hybrid. These sleepers should feel this bed contouring around their pressure points, relieving pain in these areas. However, if you’re a back sleeper who prefers to feel more “on top” of your bed, I recommend that you opt for a firmer mattress.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – These sleepers should be able to sleep comfortably on the Puffy Royal Hybrid. Its soft foams should cushion around their hips and shoulders, helping to prevent pain in these areas. However, I do want to point out that the Puffy Royal Hybrid is not incredibly “sinking,” so if you’re looking for a more contouring mattress, I recommend opting for bed with more pressure-relieving capabilities, like those on our roundup of the best soft mattresses.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – Because the Puffy Royal Hybrid is so soft, I would not recommend it for average weight stomach sleepers. The most comfortable bed for strict stomach sleepers is generally a firmer mattress. On soft mattresses like this one, stomach sleepers’ hips could sink further down into the bed than their shoulders, causing their spines to shift out of alignment, potentially leading to back pain later on.
Is the Puffy Royal Hybrid a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – The soft nature of this mattress is not designed to suit heavy sleepers’ needs. Despite its hybrid build, the Puffy Royal Hybrid is too plush to support these sleepers. I would steer heavy sleepers towards a mattress made specifically for them.

Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress Performance
As I said before, mattress firmness is subjective. While firmness is definitely important, it’s hardly the only characteristic to consider when shopping for a new mattress. In my reviews, I always make sure to run a few additional tests on the mattress to see how it performs in different sleeping positions, how it relieves pain, and how it might feel for couples sharing the bed. Keep reading to see how the Puffy Royal Hybrid performs in areas like motion transfer, cooling, edge support, and more.
Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress Pain Relief Performance
When considering buying a new a mattress, you are probably going to want to know how well it is able to relieve pressure on sensitive areas like the lower back, shoulders, and hips. To assess a bed’s pain-relieving capabilities, I perform what’s called a pressure map test.
To perform this test, I unroll a pressure map onto the top of the mattress. This technology is able to determine where pressure is building when someone lies down. Then, the pressure map creates a color-coded “map” of where, and how much, pressure is present in the mattress. Blue and green refer to areas of low pressure, and yellow and red refer to areas of high pressure. Below, you can see how the Puffy Royal Hybrid performed on its pressure map test.
However, before you move on to the results, I want to make sure that sleepers keep their preferred sleeping position in mind before choosing a bed solely based on its pressure map results. As I stated earlier, the Puffy Royal Hybrid is not the best mattress for stomach sleepers. Because of this, no matter how well this mattress might relieve pressure around the hips, I still do not recommend it for these sleepers. Long story short — always put your sleeping position first.
Back sleepers should feel comfortable sleeping on the Puffy Royal Hybrid, as the pressure map shows all blue in this area. While I did feel myself sinking slightly into this mattress, my weight was still evenly distributed and supported. However, there was some green forming around the shoulders and hips while side sleepers. The majority of side sleepers shouldn’t have a problem with this, but if you suffer from joint pain, you might want to opt for a mattress with more pressure relief in these areas. Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is an especially important factor if you share your bed with a partner or a pet. Our motion transfer test measures how much movement travels through the mattress when it is touched or disturbed.
To measure this, I start by lying down on the mattress with a colleague, rolling around, and then taking note of how much movement we felt from the other side of the bed. Next, I place a full wine glass on the mattress next to me, and see how much it sloshes around when I move. Finally, I drop a steel ball onto one side of the bed from three different heights (four inches, eight inches, and 12 inches). Then, I use a seismometer to measure how much motion was “transferred” across the mattress. Below, you can take a look at the Puffy Royal Hybrid’s seismometer test results. Keep in mind — the bigger the lines on the graph, the higher the motion transfer.
The Puffy Royal Hybrid really impressed me during the motion isolation test, as I saw low levels of motion transfer. This is most likely because of the thick memory foam layers included in this bed. This material does an excellent job of absorbing movement before it travels across the mattress, so you shouldn’t feel disturbed by a restless partner on this mattress.
Responsiveness
In general, memory foam beds are going to have the lowest response to pressure, while hybrid mattresses usually have a higher response to pressure.
Despite the fact that the Puffy Royal Hybrid is, obviously, a hybrid bed, the multiple foam layers in its construction dampen its bounce, making it slightly difficult to move around and switch positions during the night. Because of this, I would not recommend this mattress to combination sleepers, who need a more responsive bed to make sure they can move around easily. I would also not classify the Puffy Royal Hybrid as a good mattress for sex.
Cooling
When figuring out how cooling a mattress is, the first thing I take into consideration is its construction. Innerspring and hybrid mattresses usually promote the more breathability and airflow because of the coils included in their base layers, while memory foam mattresses have a reputation for overheating. However, even with its five layers of foam, the Puffy Royal Hybrid’s breathable polyester cover, Infused Cooling Foam, Climate Comfort Foam, and Cloud Air Technology Foam keep this bed sleeping quite cool. The pocketed coils in its base layer also add an extra bit of airflow throughout this mattress.
We also tested the Puffy Royal Hybrid with a device called a thermal gun. This technology uses color-coded imaging to measure how quickly a bed heats up when a sleeper lies down on it. In general, if the mattress heats up more than 15 degrees Fahrenheit, we consider it to have poor cooling capabilities. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling.
After lying on the Puffy Royal Hybrid for five minutes, its temperature increased 9.1 degrees, indicating good cooling capabilities. Considering this mattress’s hybrid construction, extra cooling foams, and strong thermal gun results, I would definitely recommend the Puffy Royal Hybrid to hot sleepers and couples who have double the body heat in their bed.
Edge Support
Last but not least, I evaluate edge support. Edge support measures whether or not sleepers are as supported on the sides of their mattress as they are in the center. This is an especially important consideration for couples, heavier sleepers (those over 250 pounds), and anyone who likes to spread out during the night.
Unfortunately, the Puffy Royal Hybrid didn’t shine in this category. I did feel like those tall foam layers started to collapse a bit the closer I got to the edge, which is something couples and heavier people should keep in mind. In my opinion, weak edge support is one of the major downsides of the Puffy Royal Hybrid.
Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
The Puffy Royal Hybrid is pretty 50/50 when it comes to its performance for couples. This mattress does have very strong motion isolation, so couples shouldn’t feel the movements of their partner during the night. Plus, this bed includes some excellent cooling features, like individually wrapped coils and gel infused foams, which should make sure that couples don’t overheat while sharing the bed with their partner. However, this mattress is not very responsive, making it difficult for sex, and its edge support is not stellar, so couples may not be able to spread out without fear of sagging or sinkage.

Who I Recommend the Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress For
- If you love the feel of a memory foam mattress, this bed could be for you. The Puffy Royal Hybrid offers five layers of foam, creating an especially body-contouring feel.
- I also think this bed is an excellent choice for back sleepers. The base layer of individually wrapped coils should keep these sleepers’ spine in a neutral alignment, while the layers of foam offer a nice hugging sensation.
- Side sleepers who prefer a slightly firmer feel to their bed should rest comfortably on the Puffy Royal Hybrid. While this mattress doesn’t have an especially “sinking” feel to it, it does provide a nice balance of comfort and stability that could work well for many of these sleepers.

The biggest difference between the Puffy Royal Hybrid and the Nectar is their constructions. While the Puffy Royal Hybrid is a hybrid mattress, the Nectar is made entirely of foams. Typically, an all-foam mattress would be softer than a hybrid, but the Nectar actually scored a 6 on the firmness scale, while the Puffy Royal Hybrid scored a 5.5 on the same scale. However, I actually recommend that strict side sleepers opt for the Nectar, despite its firmer rating, because of its excellent pressure-relieving capabilities.
- Price: The Nectar is a much more budget-friendly mattress than the Puffy Royal Hybrid. A queen sized Nectar costs around $999, while a queen sized Puffy Royal Hybrid costs around $2,699. Because of this, budget-conscious shoppers are most likely going to want to opt for the Nectar mattress.
- Sleeping position: While the Nectar actually scored higher on the firmness scale, , I would actually recommend that side sleepers opt for this mattress over the Puffy Royal Hybrid. This is because the Nectar has stronger pressure-relieving capabilities, which can be seen on its pressure map test. Side sleepers with hip and shoulder pain should feel more comfort and body contouring on this mattress.

However, the Puffy Cloud is actually firmer than the Puffy Royal Hybrid, with more of a medium-firm feel, while the Puffy Royal Hybrid has a softer feel to it. Despite this, both of these beds are going to work best for back and side sleepers, and neither one is sturdy enough for stomach sleepers.

However, there are some crucial differences between these two beds. The Puffy Lux Hybrid has more of a “sinking” feel to it, and it scored much better on the pressure map test than the Puffy Royal Hybrid did. I suggest that strict side sleepers with sensitive joints opt for the Puffy Lux Hybrid, while sleepers who prefer more of an “on top” feel to their bed stick with the Puffy Royal Hybrid.
