What Do These Mattresses Feel Like?
Now you know what these beds are made of and who they could work best for, but what exactly do they feel like? I’ll describe the feel of these mattresses below.
Remember, feel and firmness are subjective. Sleepers will experience firmness differently depending on their body types and preferred sleeping positions. For reference, I’m 5’10”, 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
Lull
I rated the Lull as a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for a medium firmness level is a 6.5, so the Lull is a medium soft mattress. This medium soft feel makes the Lull a good fit for side and back sleepers. It will offer side sleepers pressure relief at the shoulders and hips, which helps prevent stiffness. The Lull should also offer back sleepers some nice body contouring while keeping their hips up in line with their shoulders.
Strict stomach sleepers will likely need a bed with firmer support. Their hips will probably sink too far into the Lull, throwing their spines out of alignment and leading to back pain. Stomach sleepers may want to check out our best firm mattress options.
The Lull is not particularly bouncy thanks to its motion-absorbing memory foam layer. It does an average job isolating motion, which means that you won’t be disturbed by a partner tossing and turning, but you would be disturbed if a child or pet jumped on your bed. Purple
I rated the Purple mattress as a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, so it’s a touch firmer than a medium firm mattress. I’d say this makes the Purple a good fit for back sleepers who like a firmer feel. My spine felt well-aligned when I was on the Purple, and I felt a nice combination of pressure relief and support.
The Purple should also feel comfortable to combination sleepers, no matter which sleeping positions they cycle between. The Purple is very responsive, so you won’t have trouble changing positions at night. And its grid system should offer enough support and pressure relief for all sleeping positions.
However, if you’re a strict side or stomach sleeper, more than a few hours on the Purple without a position change could lead to pain or stiffness. These sleepers should opt for a different mattress; side sleepers will be happier on the softer Lull, while stomach sleepers will need a firmer bed.
Like the Lull, the Purple did an average job isolating motion so couples could be happy on this mattress as well. The Purple’s comfort layer is reinforced with poly foam to offer some additional edge support, which is an extra perk for couples who want to spread out on their entire sleeping surface.
