Brooklyn Bedding and GhostBed are two popular bed-in-a-box mattress brands, but they produce unique mattress types. Brooklyn Bedding offers five hybrid mattresses, while GhostBed has two hybrids and two memory foam mattresses that have all-foam constructions. In this comparison, I’ll be focusing on the Brooklyn Bedding Signature and the original GhostBed.
I’m going to share what these beds do and don’t have in common, what they feel like, their materials, and their company policies. I’ll also share which sleepers I think they’re best for, and tell you about some of each brand’s other mattress offerings. GhostBed vs Brooklyn Signature: Similarities and Differences
Before we dive into the details about each of these mattresses, let’s talk about some of their key similarities and differences. This should give you an idea of which is the best mattress for you.
Main Similarities
- Both the GhostBed and the Brooklyn Signature are just a bit firmer than medium firm.
- They are both built with cooling properties in mind, though I would say the GhostBed sleeps a bit cooler overall.
- They are both bed-in-a-box mattresses, which means they’ll ship compressed in a box to your door.
- They both have a more “on top of” than “in” the bed feel.
Main Differences
- The GhostBed is an all-foam mattress while the Brooklyn Signature is a hybrid, which means it uses a combination of foams and coils.
- The Brooklyn Signature comes in three firmness options while the GhostBed only comes in one.
- The Brooklyn Signature is a bit cheaper than the GhostBed.
- The Brooklyn Signature feels a bit more supportive. Its coils add a bit more lift and durability to the mattress.
- The Brooklyn Signature performed better on our motion transfer test, which means you’ll feel less movement on this mattress than you would on the GhostBed

Which is Better for You?
Depending on your height, body weight, and preferred sleeping position, one of these mattresses is likely going to be better for you than the other. Take a look at some of my recommendations below.
- I think both of these beds are great options for back sleepers. I typically recommend back sleepers go with a mattress that’s just a bit firmer than medium-firm, and both of these beds fit the bill.
- If you’re a heavier sleeper I’d go with the Brooklyn Signature. Its pocketed coils will help give the added support larger individuals need.
- I like both of these mattresses for hot sleepers. Neither one traps body heat and both are quite breathable.
- I think the Brooklyn Signature is a better option for couples. It absorbed motion quite well, so you shouldn’t be disturbed by your partner’s movements, and it also has great edge support, so you can take full advantage of the mattress’s surface area.
- I’d recommend side sleepers go with the Brooklyn Signature in the Soft firmness option.
- Similarly, I think stomach sleepers would be happy with the Brooklyn Signature in the Firm firmness option.
What Do These Mattresses Feel Like?
Now that we’ve gone over some of the basics about these beds, let’s get into the nitty gritty: how do they feel? When I discuss feel I’m referring to the mattress’s firmness, cooling properties, pressure relieving abilities, and motion transfer.
GhostBed
To determine the GhostBed’s firmness level, I polled a range of folks in the office who tested it out and averaged our scores. We gave the GhostBed a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. This firmness level is just a bit firmer than the industry standard for medium firmness of 6.5.
I find this firmness level particularly comfortable while lying on my back; I felt that my spine was supported for a straight alignment and there was some nice pressure relief at my lower back. However, I found this mattress just a bit too firm while lying on my side, and a bit too soft while lying on my stomach. If you spend all night in either one of these positions, the GhostBed might not be right for you. However, if you’re a combination sleeper who switches positions throughout the night, the GhostBed’s buoyant feel makes it easy to move around and you should be comfortable in those positions for a while.
I’d also like to mention that the GhostBed felt quite cool. Its viscose and polyester cover felt nice and breathable, and its top layer of aerated latex doesn’t trap body heat like some traditional foams. That latex foam layer also makes the GhostBed more bouncy and responsive than a memory foam mattress. There’s also a memory foam layer beneath the latex foam to offer even more contouring and pressure relief at pressure points.
One area that the GhostBed falls short is on motion transfer. Quite a bit of movement travels from one side of the bed to the other on this mattress, so couples who are easily disturbed by their partner’s movements might want to opt for a different mattress. I’d steer them to the Brooklyn Signature or one of the beds on our best mattresses for couples roundup.
Brooklyn Signature
[Reminder: all references to the Brooklyn Signature are in the Medium firmness option]
Just as I did with the GhostBed, I asked my coworkers to help me determine the Brooklyn Signature’s firmness level. We decided to give this mattress a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which is just a bit firmer than medium-firm. I think its combination of pocketed coils and firm foams contributed to this overall feel. The TitanFlex™ Foam in the comfort layer has a latex-like feel, the Energex™ Foam in the transition layer adds some firm support, and the pocketed coils create some added bounce.
Overall I’d say this is an ideal mattress for combination sleepers, who should feel comfortable in a range of positions and free to move throughout the night. I’d say strict side sleepers should go with the Soft firmness option of the Brooklyn Signature, and strict stomach sleepers should choose the Firm firmness option for this mattress.
I also think that the Brooklyn Signature is a nice choice for hot sleepers. I found that the pocketed coils promote some nice airflow throughout the mattress, and the TitanFlex™ Foam sleeps cooler than traditional memory foam.
The Brooklyn Signature performed quite well on our motion transfer test, which means that movement is absorbed by the mattress. This is great news for couples or anyone who sleeps with a pet, since they are unlikely to be disturbed by their partner’s movements throughout the night. The Brooklyn Signature also has great edge support, which means you’ll feel just as supported on the sides of the bed as you do in the middle, another great feature for couples.

What Are These Mattresses Made Of?
GhostBed
The GhostBed is an 11-inch mattress built from a combination of latex and memory foam. Unlike most foam mattresses, the GhostBed adds an extra 0.5 inches to its comfort layer, giving its top two layers a total height of 3.5 inches.
Cover – Made of a polyester/viscose blend, this cover is soft and breathable.
Comfort Layer– Made of 1.5 inches of aerated latex foam, this top layer is designed to provide a high level of pressure relief as well as the cooling and bounce to the sleeper. Latex is also a long-lasting material, so this adds a bit of durability to the mattress.
Support Layer– 2 inches of gel memory foam make up this less responsive layer. This gel memory foam has been placed below the top layer of latex in order to provide the sleeper with more support and pressure relief. Additionally, it provides deep compression support for sleepers.
Base Layer– A bottom layer made of 7.5 inches of support foam acts as the foundational base for the mattress as a whole.
Brooklyn Signature
Cover— A breathable quilted top infused with gel memory foam helps with cooling.
Comfort layer– The comfort layer is made of 2 inches of TitanFlex™ Foam. This foam is responsive and provides nice cooling, bounce, and comfort.
Transition layer– This layer is made 2 inches of Energex™ Foam. This layer is like the TitanFlex™, but a bit firmer. While it has a lot of the qualities of the layer above, the added firmness also gives it a bit more support and deep compression.
Support – 6 inches consisting of 961 pocketed coils add support, help isolate motion, and give some airflow to the mattress.
Base – 1.5 inches of high-density poly foam help support the pocketed coils.
