- I wouldn’t recommend this topper to stomach sleepers, unless adding it to an extremely firm mattress. Stomach sleepers need a firmer sleep surface to prevent their hips from sinking in and this foam topper will only make the bed feel softer.
- Heavier sleepers also might not get the pressure relief they need from this topper, unless they are looking for a very slight contouring effect. This topper is just two inches thick and heavy people, who weigh 250 pounds or more, may sink right through the topper to their firm mattress below.
- People who like all their bedding products to be washable might not find the Tuft & Needle topper to be a good fit, as it is spot clean only.

How Does the Tuft & Needle Mattress Topper Feel
I tested this mattress topper by laying on it in different sleeping positions and trying it with different mattresses to get a sense of the feel. I thought the topper felt super soft — both in the sense that the cover’s fabric was quite soft and that the foam was very squishy. I did like how having the cover on the topper reduced some of the “foamy” feeling that you might get from lying right on the foam core. However, I did note that this topper is fairly thin, so I didn’t get quite as much pressure relief from it as a thicker topper might have offered.
One of the main reasons to get a mattress topper is to change up the feel of your current mattress, so here’s how I thought the Tuft & Needle altered mattresses of different firmness levels.
Soft: Normally I don’t see much purpose in adding a topper to an already soft mattress, but if you’re in need of some serious pressure relief — perhaps for chronic shoulder or hip pain — I think the Tuft & Needle topper could be a good option. I thought it added a nice additional layer of softness and cushioning without making the bed feel way too soft.
Medium-firm: Adding this topper to a medium-firm mattress gave it an additional layer of plush comfort without really changing the firmness, in my opinion. I think this is a good option for people who like the firmness of their bed but are feeling some pain in pressure points. This thin topper can add a pressure-relieving top layer while maintaining the firmness.
Firm: Like the medium-firm mattress, I didn’t think adding the Tuft & Needle topper to a firm mattress drastically changed the feel of the bed — it simply added a layer of responsive foam to provide some cushioning. Because it didn’t change the feel much, I think this will work best for back sleepers who are looking for pressure relief around the shoulders or want foam to fill in their lumbar region for extra support.

My Verdict on the Tuft & Needle Mattress Topper
Overall, the Tuft & Needle mattress topper is a great option for anyone who needs an extra touch of softness on their bed. I think it’s a great pick for back sleepers, as it won’t make their beds too soft but can offer some relief for shoulder and lower back pain with its adaptive foam. Some side sleepers could also find the Tuft & Needle mattress topper helpful in providing pressure relief, but I would caution side sleepers if they are either 1) heavy sleepers who weigh 250 pounds or more or 2) currently sleeping on a firm mattress, to go for a thicker topper that will offer more room to sink in for pressure relief.
Some cons for the Tuft & Needle topper are the cover isn’t machine washable and it doesn’t have any way of attaching to the mattress. I appreciate the non-skid silicone beads, but straps or a skirt, which attaches the topper like a fitted sheet, would do much more to keep it in place.
Additionally, I like that this topper has breathable open-cell foam and I didn’t notice it overheating. But if you’re a seriously hot sleeper, I would recommend something with more cooling properties, like a latex or cooling gel memory foam mattress topper.
