Hush is a relatively new player in the weighted blanket game. Founded in 2017 in Canada, Hush seeks to mitigate insomnia and anxiety with their premium weighted blankets. Since then, they’ve expanded and made other products, including the Hush Iced 2.0, a cooling weighted blanket, and the bed-in-a-box Hush mattress. They also donate 1 in every 10 Hush weighted blankets sold to organizations like homeless shelters and to adults with disabilities through their GiveBack program.

But today we’ll be talking about the classic Hush weighted blanket — the OG! I’ll go into detail about the materials and feel of this Canadian blanket, as well as give some recommendations of who should consider buying it, based on my personal experience testing it. Could the Hush Classic help you get your best sleep? Let’s find out!

What is the Hush Classic Weighted Blanket Made Of?

Now if you’re not too familiar with weighted blankets, you’re probably wondering what the heck this blanket is made with that makes it weighted! There are a lot of different materials used in weighted blankets, but the Hush Classic uses non-toxic glass sand. That glass sand is contained in quilted 4-inch pockets in the inner blanket, which is made of a soft microfiber material (or microfibre, as they would spell it in Hush’s homeland Canada!).

The Hush Classic also comes with an outer cover, or duvet cover, which is made from a plush, velvety material. Hush describes this outer cover as having super-soft “minkythreading. If you’re the type of person who instinctively has to feel any blanket or pillow at a store that looks fuzzy or soft, you’ll probably love the feel of this cover. (I’m that type of person and I loved this outer cover’s feel!)

The outer cover attaches to the inner blanket with a zipper, which keeps it securely in place. You can also completely remove the outer cover to wash it, or if you’re just not vibing with the fuzzy feel, you can remove it and sleep under just the inner blanket

How Much Does the Hush Classic Weighted Blanket Weigh?

The Hush Classic Weighted Blanket is available in a variety of size and weight options. The teen size blanket, which is the size of a throw blanket, is 12 pounds. The twin size is available in 15-pound or 20-pound weights — I tested the 15-pound twin for this review. The queen size is available in 20-pound or 25-pound sizes and the king size is available in 30-pound or 35-pound sizes.

When choosing a weighted blanket, you want to pick one that is about 10 percent of your body weight. That’s the ratio that will give you the best experience of Deep Pressure Touch. Deep Pressure Touch is the form of tactile sensory input that we get from actions like hugging or cuddling. The goal of the weighted blanket is to create that same sensation, which cues your body to start calming down.

For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, then the 15-pound option is the best weighted blanket for you. If you are intending to share the blanket with another person, then the ideal weight for the blanket is 10 percent of your combined body weights.

What Does the Hush Classic Weighted Blanket Feel Like?

When I tested the Hush blanket, I thought it was super cozy. I absolutely loved the feel of the outer cover, which is really soft and velvety. It’s definitely the type of material I love to snuggle up under. I also thought the inner blanket’s material felt nice — it’s a much smoother type of soft, so I think it would also be really pleasant to use without the outer cover.

I loved the feel of the Hush’s outer cover.

I thought this blanket had really even weight distribution, as well. The quilted pockets on the inner blanket ensure that the glass sand stays evenly distributed across the whole blanket. The weight was a very pleasant level for me, as well. I definitely felt a comforting amount of pressure across my body.

Hush says that lying under the blanket will lower your cortisol levels to reduce stress, raise your serotonin levels to increase happiness, and raise your melatonin levels to induce sleep, which is what studies on Deep Touch Pressure have found to be true. Now I didn’t test this blanket in a lab, so I can’t say for sure if my cortisol levels lowered or my serotonin and melatonin were raised, but I can say that I personally felt pretty relaxed under this blanket.

Is the Hush Classic Weighted Blanket Good for Hot Sleepers?

One concern many people have about weighted blankets is that they’ll be too warm under them. In my experience, I did find the Hush Classic weighted blanket to be pretty toasty. Just sitting under it on my couch at home, I started to get pretty warm. If you’re a naturally-cold person like me, you’ll probably love how warm this blanket is! But if you run hot, it may present some issues.

For a less toasty experience, I think you could just go without the outer cover. I like that you have that flexibility with this blanket, because you could use the warm outer cover in colder months and take it off in warmer weather. If you’re a super hot sleeper though, you may want to consider the Hush Iced 2.0 instead.

How Durable is the Hush Classic Weighted Blanket?

Overall, I thought the Hush Classic weighted blanket felt very high quality. All of the materials feel really nice and the zippers used to hold the outer cover and inner blanket together feel sturdy and durable. Having the washable removable cover will also ensure that your weighted blanket stays pristine over time.

Is the Hush Classic Weighted Blanket Good for You?

Now that you have a better understanding of this blanket, let’s go over my recommendations for who should consider buying it.

Who Should Try the Hush Classic Weighted Blanket

  • If you love soft, velvety, fuzzy blankets, you will absolutely love the feel of the outer cover on the Hush Classic weighted blanket. I’m speaking from personal experience here, because those are my favorite kinds of blankets and I loved the feel of the Hush!
  • If you’re looking for a weighted blanket to share with a partner, the Hush Classic is a great option, since they offer those larger size options like queen and king.
  • If easy cleaning options are important to you, I think you’ll definitely appreciate the removable cover. Just toss it in the wash and hang to dry! While the inner blanket is hand-wash only, many other blankets are spot-clean only.

Hush Classic Weighted Blanket Complaints

  • If you sleep really hot, the Hush Classic may not be the best weighted blanket for you. It’s not particularly cooling or breathable, although you can remove the outer cover to reduce the warmth a bit.
  • If you weigh more than 200 pounds, there isn’t a great weight option for you with this blanket, unless you want to buy the queen or king size for a single person to use. The highest weight for the twin size is 20 pounds, so people who weigh more than 200 pounds would need a higher weight for the blanket to equal 10 percent of their body weight
  • If you want a specific color, your options are somewhat limited here, as the Hush Classic is only available in one color.

Hush Classic Weighted Blanket Vs

Let’s compare the Hush Classic weighted blanket to one of its competitors: the Bearaby Tree Napper weighted blanket.

Hush Classic Weighted Blanket vs Bearaby Tree Napper Weighted Blanket

Bearaby12
The Bearaby Tree Napper.
  • The Bearaby Tree Napper is a unique weighted blanket, as it doesn’t use plastic pellets, glass beads, or any other conventional weighted blanket materials. The weight in this blanket comes from the material itself!
  • The blanket is hand-knit with a wide weave loop and uses Tencel, a sustainable material derived from wood pulp. Tencel is a super soft, smooth material that’s great for temperature control.
  • The wide weave loop of the Tree Napper also makes it super breathable, which is a great option for hot sleepers.
