With thousands of positive reviews from happy customers online, the Saatva Classic has become a fan favorite in the mattress industry. Not only is this one of the best innerspring mattresses on the market, but Saatva also claims that this mattress is America’s best-selling online luxury innerspring mattress.
Built with gentle memory foam and a sturdy coil-on-coil system, this bed was designed to provide a luxuriously supportive sleeping experience. It also comes in multiple firmness options, heights, and with free white glove delivery.
But is Saatva’s affordable luxury mattress too good to be true? Does it live up to the hype? That’s what I hope to uncover in this review. Come along with me as I test the Saatva Classic mattress, and discover if truly is one of the best of the best.

The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It’s a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs. The white glove delivery Saatva provides is an added perk and will save you the headache of getting rid of your old mattress (they take it away for free!). Where the Saatva Classic is Featured
Here at Sleepopolis, we use a series of hands-on tests to determine which mattress roundups a bed belongs on and who it might be good for. Here are some of our 2024 mattress roundups that include the Saatva Classic:
Saatva Mattress Overview
When I say that the Saatva has a coil-on-coil construction, I mean that it has two layers of springs, and that’s what makes up most of the mattress. Unlike a memory foam mattress or a hybrid mattress (which uses substantial amounts of springs and foam), it has a traditional innerspring feel — high on bounciness and support.
However, there is some variation across the Saatva Classic, as it comes in three different firmness options: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. It also comes in two height options: 11.5 inches and 14.5 inches. In this review, I tested the Luxury Firm version with the 11.5-inch height. One way Saatva stands out from its competitors is that, unlike other online mattresses, it’s never compressed in a box. It arrives fully formed with free white glove delivery, meaning that the company sends someone to your home to deliver the mattress and set it up.
Because of this, the Saatva shouldn’t have an off-gassing period or need time to decompress. You can sleep on it right after arrival. Read more about off-gassing and other mattress terminology in our mattress glossary.
Saatva Classic Mattress Review Video
Want a better look at the Saatva mattress before I get into the full written review? Check out my video to see the bed’s materials up close and how it performed during our tests. Overall, I rated this mattress at a 4.8 out of 5, and you can see my individual scores for all of our testing categories at the end of the video.
Saatva Mattress Sleepopolis Score
Even though the Saatva Classic ranked well in most of the categories, motion isolation is the one area where I scored it a bit lower. If you’re looking for a mattress that better absorbs motion, check out our best mattresses for couples.
The Saatva is an innerspring mattress with a zoned support system. It has a coil-on-coil construction, and the model I’m reviewing has a height of 11.5 inches. However, the bed is also available in a 14.5-inch model. Here’s how it breaks down layer by layer.
Saatva Mattress Firmness
The feel of a mattress comes down to a few different factors, but firmness might be the most important. At the same time, it’s important to note that firmness is subjective. So, to get a wide-spanning range of opinions, I polled a range of folks in the Sleepopolis office — several of whom are Certified Sleep Science Coaches — and we determined the firmness level together.
I originally thought the Luxury Firm model of the Saatva felt like a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, but after lying on it and discussing it with my coworkers, I rated the Saatva a 6.5. The firmness scale ranges from 1 (softest) to 10 (firmest), with 6.5 being the industry standard for medium firm. It’s safe to say that the Firm model will probably be closer to a 7 or an 8. And while the Plush Soft model will definitely be softer, it’s likely to still have a responsive and supportive feel due to its construction.

The Saatva gets its firm feel from its coil-on-coil construction, which offers quite a bit of support. The Saatva can feel softer in the center since it has a zoned support system. This means it’s firmer in certain parts of the bed and plusher in others. The memory foam layer in the middle, offers pressure relief in the center where most sleepers need it most.
Even though my fellow mattress testers and I all experienced the Saatva as a medium-firm to firm mattress, I still felt nice cushioning from its quilted Euro pillow-top. This gave the Saatva a uniquely dynamic balance of firmness and cushion when compared to other mattresses I tested.
When it comes to support, I gave this bed a score of 5 out of 5 stars. The mattress contains high-quality materials that work to keep the sleeper lifted and supported while still being comfortable.

Patty, Saatva customerSleeping Position and Body Weight
Is the Saatva a Good Mattress For Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – Light back sleepers should find that the Saatva offers plenty of firm support, although I recommend they go for the Plush Soft model, which will likely feel more like the Luxury Firm model to them.
- Light Side Sleepers – The Saatva is too firm for these sleepers, who need more pressure relief around the shoulders and hips. I’d recommend checking out one of our best mattresses for side sleepers.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – These sleepers should feel comfortable on the Saatva. The mattress should keep their hips lifted and in line with their shoulders. However, like back sleepers, they’ll probably be more comfortable on the Plush Soft model.
Is the Saatva a Good Mattress For Average Weight Sleepers (130 to 250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – These sleepers should enjoy the Saatva. The support of the coils should keep their back in a healthy neutral position, which can help combat back pain.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – Like light side sleepers, average-weight side sleepers will want to try the Plush Soft model instead of the Luxury Firm in order to get more contouring around their shoulders and hips. However, I think the Luxury Firm could work for some side combination side sleepers who don’t spend the whole night in this sleeping position.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – I think a lot of these folks should be happy on the Luxury Firm model, but I’d recommend trying the Firm model if you’re a strict stomach sleeper. A firm mattress helps keep the hips and shoulders aligned, which is important for avoiding back pain.
Is the Saatva a Good Mattress For Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d highly recommend the Saatva to heavy back sleepers. It offers sturdy support while lying on your back and is extremely durable. If any heavy sleepers want extra support, they can also opt for the Firm model.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – These sleepers might prefer something softer than the Saatva. I’d recommend they check out our best mattresses for heavy people for some other options with a gentler touch.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – These sleepers might need more support than the Saatva offers to keep their spine aligned. I’d recommend the Saatva HD — the brand’s bed designed specifically for heavy people — to these folks.
Saatva Mattress Performance
Now you should have a broad overview of who the Saatva might be good for. But our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches also performs a series of specialized tests that allow us to make even more specific recommendations. Below, you’ll find information on how the Saatva performs in areas such as pain relief, motion transfer, and more.
Saatva Mattress Pain Relief Performance
Pain relief is closely tied to pressure relief, which is a mattress’s ability to alleviate tension at pressure points at the hips, shoulders, and back. Pressure relief can be important for anyone suffering from shoulder pain or hip pain, as they’ll want a gentler feel in these areas. Overall, I gave the Saatva score of 4.5 out of 5 in pressure relief, and I’ll explain why.
To test the Saatva’s pressure-relieving abilities, I ran it through a test called the pressure map. It involves spreading a specialized mat across the mattress and lying on top of it in different sleeping positions (usually my back and my side). The mat then uses thermal imaging to show how much pressure is being put on my body. It changes from blue and green for low pressure (with blue signaling no pressure at all) to orange and red for high pressure (with red being the highest pressure). We cover three different areas: back pain, shoulder pain, and hip pain.
Before looking at the results below, it’s important that you take your sleeping position into account. For instance, I don’t recommend the Luxury Firm model of the Saatva to side sleepers (they should go for the Plush Soft instead). So if you’re a side sleeper with back pain, you’ll probably still want to steer clear of this particular model, even though it performed well in back pain relief. In other words, consider your sleeping position first, then look at our pressure map results.
As you can see in the graphics above, the Saatva shines when it comes to back pain, as the graphic is mostly blue. Shoulder pain and hip pain are a different story, with a tiny bit of green at the hips and shoulders. While this is by no means a lot of pressure, folks who struggle with tension in these areas might want to look at our best mattresses for hip pain or best mattresses for shoulder pain instead.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer refers to the movement detectable from one side of the bed on the other. If a mattress has low motion transfer, that means it has high motion isolation, and you’re unlikely to feel movement on the opposite side of the bed on your side. This is important for couples or anyone who sleeps with a pet, as they don’t want to be disturbed by movement in the night. In Sleepopolis’ mattress lab, we come up with our motion-isolation score using a few different tests, which I’ll outline below. Overall, I gave the Saatva a score of 3 out of 5 in this category.
Human Test
First, I simply lie down on the mattress with someone else, roll around, and see how much of each other’s movement we feel. When conducting this test on the Saatva, my coworker and I could feel each other’s movements, which was expected, given the coil construction of the bed.
Wine Test for Motion Isolation
Next, I place a wine glass on the mattress, fill it up, and see how much the wine moves with our motions. When testing the Saatva Mattress for motion isolation, the wine splashed around in the glass as it gently rocked, but didn’t spill. Compared to the hundreds of other mattresses I reviewed, this is pretty typical and means the Saatva has pretty good motion isolation.
Seismometer Test for Motion Transfer
Finally, there’s our seismometer test. This involves dropping a 10-pound steel ball from three different heights and measuring the amount of movement on the other side of the mattress with our seismometer. As you’ll see in the graphic below, each height is meant to mimic a different movement you might feel in bed. The larger the wave, the worse the motion isolation. Looking at the seismograph results here, we can see that the Saatva will absorb most of the tossing and turning but you might feel your partner getting in and out of bed, which isn’t unusual.
These are high motion-transfer results, which isn’t surprising for an innerspring mattress with coil layers. Lots of movement traveled from one side of the bed to the other.
After all of my tests, I ended up giving the Saatva a score of 3 out of 5 in motion isolation. The motion isolation was just okay. If you sleep with a partner or pet, you may feel their movements at night if you’re not a sound sleeper. It may be worth checking out or list of best memory foam mattresses instead (memory foam tends to absorb motion much better than springs).
Responsiveness
I gave the Saatva a perfect 5-out-of-5 score in responsiveness. I test this category by pressing down on the mattress’s layers, removing my hand, and seeing how quickly the surface returns to its original shape. Memory foam tends to have a low response to pressure, while innerspring mattresses like the Saatva tend to have a high response to pressure.
I also like to test out the bed’s responsiveness by lying down on it and moving around. I found that the Saatva made it very easy to shift my body and change sleeping positions compared to other mattresses. The mattress responded well to my movement, and I didn’t sink in too deep. I was able to turn over and switch from my back to my side to my stomach with ease.
This tells me that the Saatva is going to be one of the best mattresses for sex, and a good fit for combination sleepers who switch between their back, stomach, and side during the night.
Cooling
I gave the Saatva a very high rating of 4.5 out of 5 in the category of cooling.
I take several factors into consideration when testing out a mattress’s cooling capabilities. First, I consider its construction. Since the Saatva is an innerspring mattress (with two layers of coils, to boot), there’s a lot of space in its layers — much more than a mattress without springs. I expected that this construction would leave plenty of room for air to flow through the mattress and keep it cool. Anecdotally, it delivered on that expectation before I moved on to the more objective cooling test.
I also test out each mattress with a device called a thermal gun, which uses color-coded imaging to measure how much and how quickly a mattress heats up when I lie down on it. If it heats up more than 15 degrees Fahrenheit, I consider it to have poor cooling capabilities. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling.
After five minutes of lying on the Saatva, it increased 9.3 degrees. This indicates good temperature regulation. I gave it a score of 4.5 out of 5 for cooling because of it’s airy innerspring construction. I really did feel cool when resting on it, which was confirmed by the thermal gun. I think that the Saatva is one of the best cooling mattresses. Also, your body temperature drops when you sleep, so chances are that the Saatva will have a lower temperature in your home at night.
Keep in mind that several outside factors can affect cooling, including the temperature of your bedroom, how close your bed is to an air vent or window, and your body’s own temperature, which can vary from person to person.
Edge Support
Edge support is how well a mattress holds up on the edges as compared to the middle. Strong edges make a mattress feel bigger, which is a perk for couples or anyone who likes to spread out and use the whole surface of their bed.
The Saatva uses a reinforced edge support system combining coils and firm polyfoam. The result is some fantastic edge support, earning it a score of 5 out of 5. When sitting on the side of the mattress, I felt just as supported as I did in the center. And when I measured the sinkage with a yardstick, the layers sank less than a half inch under my weight. As far as edge support goes, it doesn’t really get better than this.
Saatva Mattress Performance For Couples
When I’m deciding if a mattress is good for couples, I take several of the above performance factors into consideration — namely cooling, motion transfer, responsiveness, and edge support. Overall, I think the Saatva is an excellent choice for anyone who sleeps with a partner. It’s responsive enough for sex and has strong enough edge support to allow two bodies to spread out. Also, the space between its coils leave lots of room for airflow, which can help the mattress stay cool when there’s double the body heat in the bed.
The one performance area for couples where the Saatva falters is motion isolation. The bounciness of the mattress resulted in high motion transfer, meaning that, if you or your partner is a light sleeper, you may be woken up by the other person’s movement at night. However, if you’re both deep sleepers, then this shouldn’t be a problem.

Durability
I consider a mattress to be durable if its structure and comfort hold up for many years. If a mattress starts to sag or deteriorate after just a few years of use, then it’s not up to my durability standards, and I won’t recommend it to sleepers. When I evaluated the Saatva for durability, I was extremely impressed by its edge support, which was some of the best I’ve ever seen on a mattress. This tells me that this bed is unlikely to sag over time. The mattress also comes with a lifetime warranty, so the company is very confident in the bed’s ability to last. The coil-on-coil construction makes this bed super supportive, and I believe the coils are high-quality enough to maintain their shape and strength. The entire bed is packed with high-quality materials, including CertiPUR-US certified foams, that should stand the test of time.
I created the Saatva’s overall durability score by averaging its score from the materials, support, edge support, and warranty categories, which are the most indicative of durability.
Overall Durability Score | 5/5 |
Materials Score | 5/5 |
Support Score | 5/5 |

My Final Thoughts About the Saatva Mattress
Before I finish up, let’s quickly review who might most enjoy the Saatva — and who should probably look elsewhere.
Who I Recommend the Saatva Mattress For
- I think the Saatva is a great option for back sleepers, as the Luxury Firm model provides enough cushioning for their lumbar region, but also lots of support to keep their spine in a neutral alignment.
- I think combination sleepers should be happy on the Saatva since its layers of coils make for a bouncy mattress that’s easy to move around on.
- I would recommend the Saatva to heavier back sleepers because its sturdy construction increases support and durability. However, the brand does have another model built specifically for these folks: the Saatva HD.
- Hot sleepers should have no trouble staying cool on the Saatva, thanks to its airy coil-on-coil construction.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Saatva Mattress For
- I think the Luxury Firm model is too firm for strict side sleepers. I’d tell them to choose the Plush Soft firmness level instead.
- Strict stomach sleepers may want to opt for the Firm model instead of the Luxury Firm so their hips can be propped up and in line with their shoulders.
- If you share a bed and are easily disturbed by your partner tossing and turning at night, consider choosing a mattress with lower motion transfer. Because of its traditional innerspring feel, you’re likely to feel movement on the Saatva. However, if you and your partner aren’t easily disturbed while sleeping, this mattress could still be right for you.

What are Saatva’s shipping policies?
Saatva offers free white glove delivery, which means they’ll deliver the new mattress to your room of choice. They’ll even remove your old mattress for free.
What is the Saatva trial period?
Saatva offers a 365-night home sleep trial, allowing you to test it out for a whole year. If it isn’t the best fit for you, you can return it within that time period.
What is the Saatva mattress warranty?
The Saatva has a lifetime warranty.
Is the Saatva mattress made in the USA?
Yes, every mattress is made to order in the United States.
Do I need a bed frame for the Saatva?
No. A box spring, foundation, platform bed, or adjustable base works just as well.
Can I flip the Saatva mattress?
No, the Saatva is not meant to be flipped. If you’re worried about wear and tear, you can rotate it 180 degrees every six months or so.
Is the Saatva a true innerspring mattress?
The term “innerspring mattress” means something different today than it did years and years ago. Where innerspring mattresses were once made almost entirely of coils at their core, these springs are now usually combined with one or more layers of foam. That being said, the coils still make up the bulk of the bed and result in a traditional innerspring feel (i.e. bouncy and supportive). The Saatva is considered a modern innerspring mattress.
What do customers have to say about the Saatva?
“From beginning to end, what a great experience. ordering was very easy. Delivery right on schedule.” – Joe
“We got a Saatva mattress, and while I don’t have anything bad to say about it, we never fell in love with it. It definitely didn’t give us that comfy can’t-wait-to-crawl-into-bed feeling.” – Rachel
“I just received my new plush soft mattress and adjustable base. I haven’t slept this well in a very long time. No more hip pain! I actually sleep through the night instead of waking up every couple of hours from discomfort.” – Janet

Saatva vs Casper
The Casper Original is an all-foam mattress that’s medium-firm to firm, while the Saatva uses both foam and coils and is firm (once again, we’re referring specifically to the Luxury Firm model). Another big difference? The Casper is a bed-in-a-box mattress, while the Saatva comes uncompressed.
- Price: Since it doesn’t contain any coils, the Casper is almost always going to be cheaper than the Saatva.
- Sleeping position: I think the Casper is a good match for back sleepers and side sleepers, and the Saatva is a good match for back sleepers and stomach sleepers. However, side sleepers can try out the Plush Soft model of the Saatva.
- Cooling: Neither mattress sleeps especially hot, but the Saatva is going to be better at cooling because its coils leave more room for airflow.
- Body weight: Due to its supportive springs, the Saatva is the better choice for heavy sleepers over 250 pounds. There’s also the Saatva HD, which was designed specifically for these folks.

We recommend this mattress for the following sleeper types: Financing options are available for this mattress. "From the delivery of the box to the magical unfolding of the king size mattress to the first time laying on the bed, all smiles here! I have traveled for work for years, often sleeping on different beds at different hotels night after night."
The Casper Original is an all-foam mattress that is a great option for back sleepers who want a balance of support and pressure relief. Combination sleepers will appreciate this mattress's responsiveness, which makes it easy to change positions throughout the night.

Saatva vs WinkBed
The WinkBed is a hybrid mattress that uses gel-infused foam, microcoils, and pocketed coils. Like the Saatva, the WinkBed has a traditional innerspring feel, although its foam layer is much thicker. Both mattresses are offered in multiple firmness options.
- Price: While these are both considered luxury mattresses, the WinkBed tends to run slightly cheaper than the Saatva.
- Sleeping position: Both mattresses have an innerspring feel that should appeal to back sleepers and some stomach sleepers. Side sleepers should opt for the Saatva Plush Soft or the WinkBed Softer.
- Cooling: Both of these mattresses sleep very cool due to all of the space from the coils.
- Body weight: I give the WinkBed a slight edge over Saatva when it comes to heavy sleepers over 250 pounds. That said, both brands have a model designed specifically for larger body types (in Saatva’s case, the Saatva HD, and for the WinkBed, the WinkBed Plus).

The WinkBed is a hybrid mattress that comes in three firmness levels, so most sleepers should find a model that suits their needs. It could also be a good fit for couples, thanks to reinforced edge support.

Saatva vs Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep
The EcoSleep is Brooklyn Bedding’s take on a natural mattress. It’s built with latex foam and sturdy coils, plus it has a flippable design, with both a firm side and an extra-firm side.
- Price: Even though the EcoSleep is a fully organic mattress, it runs a lot cheaper than the Saatva.
- Sleeping position: Both the Saatva and the EcoSleep should be comfortable for back sleepers. Side sleepers will be most comfortable on the Plush Soft model of the Saatva, and stomach sleepers should enjoy either option (once again, I recommend they opt for the Saatva’s firm model).
- Cooling: Both mattresses are very cooling and should be a good fit for hot sleepers.
- Body weight: I think the Saatva is the better match for heavy sleepers, due to the support of its dual layer of coils.

Other Models from Saatva
Saatva also has a few other models which have their own unique names. Though some might think that Loom & Leaf and Zenhaven are their own mattress companies, they are actually all under the Saatva umbrella.
Saatva vs Loom & Leaf
Unlike the Saatva, the Loom & Leaf is an all-foam memory foam mattress that has no coils in its construction. But like its innerspring counterpart, it does have different firmness options: Relaxed Firm and Firm.
- Price: Also a luxury mattress, the Loom & Leaf is significantly more expensive than the Saatva.
- Sleeping position: The Loom & Leaf is softer than the Saatva and is a better option for side sleepers. Back sleepers and stomach sleepers should opt for the Saatva.
- Cooling: Foam mattresses tend to sleep hotter than innerspring mattresses, and the Loom & Leaf is no different. I think the Saatva is the better cooling mattress.
- Body weight: The Loom & Leaf uses lots of high-density foam for extra support, especially in the Firm model. Some heavy sleepers could be comfortable on this version of the mattress, as well as on the Saatva. But the best Saatva model for these folks is undoubtedly the Saatva HD.
Read more in our full Loom & Leaf mattress review.
The Loom & Leaf is a pressure-relieving memory foam mattress. It offers deep sinkage and contouring, and its foam layers absorb almost all movement, making it a great option for couples.

Saatva vs Zenhaven
The Zenhaven is a luxury mattress that’s made from all-natural Talalay latex. Unlike the Saatva, it’s made entirely of foam and is a flippable mattress with a Plush Soft side and a Gentle Firm side.
- Price: The Zenhaven runs a lot more expensive than the Saatva, likely due to its latex foam, which tends to be a pricy material.
- Sleeping position: Because it has two sides, the Zenhaven is going to appeal to more sleeping positions. Whereas I recommend the Luxury Firm model of the Saatva to back sleepers and some stomach sleepers, the Zenhaven is also a good fit for side sleepers, who should enjoy the Plush Soft side.
- Cooling: Both mattresses could be good choices for hot sleepers. The Saatva’s springs allow for airflow and the Zenhaven’s latex is naturally cooling.
- Body weight: I think the original Saatva is more supportive and the better fit for heavy people, but I once again have to recommend the Saatva HD as the ideal model for these folks.

We recommend this mattress for the following sleeper types: Financing options are available for this mattress. The Zenhaven is extremely durable, so you know you are investing in a mattress that will last a while. Another great perk of this latex bed is that it’s naturally cooling, which hot sleepers should appreciate. You also get two firmness levels in one with this bed since it is flippable.

Our Review Process
At Sleepopolis, our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress.
