Need a quick rundown of each mattress and who I recommend them for? Check out my Stearns & Foster vs Saatva video review below.
Stearns & Foster vs Saatva: Top Similarities
- Construction: Both are luxury beds that use a combination of foams and coils. The Stearns & Foster is a true hybrid bed, while the Saatva Classic is more like an innerspring mattress, utilizing a very small amount of foam. And both of these beds are made by high-end, luxury brands.
- Firmness options: Both beds are available in multiple firmness options. The Stearns & Foster comes in Soft, Medium, and Firm with a pillow top, as well as Medium without a pillow top. The Saatva comes in Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm.
- Shipping: Both of these beds ship uncompressed and come with free white glove delivery, which means a delivery team will bring the mattress to your room of choice, set it up, and take away your old mattress.
Stearns & Foster vs Saatva: Top Differences
- Height options: The Saatva comes in two height options: 11.5 and 14.5 inches. The Stearns & Foster does not come with multiple height options.
- Motion isolation: The Stearns & Foster performed better in motion isolation, meaning it may be a better option for couples who are easily disturbed by movement.
- Sleep trial and warranty: Saatva offers a longer trial period (365 nights for Saatva versus 90 nights for Stearns & Foster) and a longer warranty (lifetime for Saatva versus 10 years for Stearns & Foster).
Stearns & Foster vs Saatva: Construction & Feel Differences
Now that you have the rundown on the main similarities and differences between the Stearns & Foster and Saatva, let’s focus on what these mattresses feel like. In this section, I’ll evaluate various factors, including firmness, pressure relief, bounce, and sinkage. Remember, these factors are highly subjective and can vary significantly based on individual body size, shape, and weight.
What’s the Firmness Difference?
When it comes to mattresses, firmness isn’t one-size-fits-all. An individual’s size, weight, shape, and other factors all determine your ideal level of firmness. So your preferences might not be the same as mine. When testing a mattress for firmness, we try to capture the variance different people might feel. I test every bed with colleagues of various body shapes, types, and sizes, then average those responses to determine the final firmness score.
My colleagues and I gave both mattresses a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. We rate firmness on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. For reference, the industry standard for a medium-firm mattress is a 6.5 on the firmness scale.
What Does Each Mattress Feel Like?
The Stearns & Foster is a hybrid mattress, meaning most people should find it supportive and responsive. When testing the Stearns & Foster, I felt a good amount of support on this mattress, which isn’t surprising since the Lux Estate mattress features Stearns & Foster’s proprietary IntelliCoil innerspring system, which is designed to adapt and support sleepers of all body types.
I also noticed that the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate has a plush, hotel-bed like feel, but is still quite sturdy and supportive, with a more “on top” of the bed feel. Again, there are softer and firmer versions available, as well.
Similar to the Lux Estate, the Saatva Classic uses a combination of memory foam and coils. However, the Saatva Classic has a very small amount of foam and feels much closer to a traditional innerspring bed. Still, there is some nice cushioning from the Euro top layer. You should also feel overall “on top” of the Saatva, rather than in it. And again, there are softer and firmer versions of the Saatva available, as well.

Stearns & Foster vs Saatva Comparing Mattress Performance
Temperature
Several factors contribute to a mattress’s cooling ability. First and foremost, I consider its construction. Since both mattresses feature layers of pocketed coils, there’s plenty of room for air to flow through them and keep them cool.
After laying on each for a few minutes and measuring how much heat each one trapped, I found that the Stearns & Foster stayed cooler overall. Stearns & Foster packed a lot of cooling features into the Lux Estate’s construction. This mattress has a ventilated coil layer, cool-to-the-touch cover, and air vents on the sides. In action, I found it very cool to sleep on, doing a fantastic job at dissipating heat.
I found that the Saatva Classic also had decent temperature regulation, thanks to its airy innerspring construction. While I think both of these mattresses should sleep cool enough for most sleepers, I would still recommend one of our best cooling mattresses for individuals who get extra hot at night.
Motion Isolation
I’ve noticed a lot of mattresses with springs typically come with lots of bounce, and the Lux Estate and Saatva are no exception. Both mattresses are highly responsive, meaning it’s simple to change sleeping positions and get in and out of bed. However, if you sleep with a restless partner or pet, you might feel some of their movements on your side of the bed.
To ensure that I’m not just speaking from my experience, I perform a few tests to determine if a bed is good at isolating motion. One of those tests consists of dropping a steel ball from various heights and measuring the disturbance it causes using a seismometer.
As you can see, the Lux Estate did a better job of isolating motion than the Saatva Classic. Based on these test results, you might feel your partner get in and out of bed a little bit, but their movements shouldn’t impact your side of the mattress too much.
Edge Support
When testing the edge support on both mattresses, I didn’t find much sinkage as I sat on the edge of these beds. However, I thought the Saatva mattress did better between the two. The Saatva uses a reinforced edge support system that combines coils and firm polyfoam, meaning the corners and edges of the bed shouldn’t budge when you bear down on them to get up. When I measured the sinkage with a yardstick, the layers of the Saatva sank less than a half inch under my weight.
The Stearns & Foster Lux Estate mattress also has strong edge support. During testing, I felt extremely supported, even when I rolled over toward the edge of the bed. However, when I sat near the edges and on the corners, I sank a little through the pillow top. It wasn’t enough to make me feel like I was falling off, but it still pales compared to the Saatva Classic’s stellar edge support.
Pressure Relief
The Stearns & Foster performed well on our pressure map test, where we use a specialized mat to measure how much pressure the materials put on different body parts. The mat then creates a graphic or “map” of the body using color-coded imagery. Areas with low pressure buildup are blue and green, and areas with high pressure buildup are yellow and red.
As you can see on the pressure map below, the Lux Estate mattress should be a homerun for back sleepers. I only saw a tiny bit of green in my hips, making this bed a strong choice for sleepers struggling with back pain. However, I saw a bit of yellow on my shoulders while trying out the Stearns & Foster on my side. Based on this, I wouldn’t recommend this mattress to side sleepers with sensitive joints.
Similarly, there was a good amount of green and blue on the Saatva’s pressure map results. The Saatva and Stearns & Foster are neck and neck when it comes to back pressure relief, however, I think the Saatva performed slightly better overall for side sleeping. I still wouldn’t recommend either of these beds to folks with sensitive joints or strict side sleepers.
Pain Relief
The results of the pressure relief test can indicate whether these mattresses aid in reducing pain in specific areas. I think the Stearns & Foster and Saatva are good options for most back sleepers. However, side sleepers, especially those with shoulder pain, should go with one of our best mattresses for side sleepers.
Durability
I would say the Saatva is more durable than the Lux Estate, but only by a little bit. Since the Saatva Classic’s construction primarily consists of coils and has better edge support, I think it is less likely to sag prematurely.
On the other hand, the Stearns & Foster mattress also has a layer of pocketed coils and uses high-quality materials, such as TEMPUR-Indulge™ Memory Foam and a TENCEL cover.
These materials should stand the test of time for most sleepers, but I would still recommend the Saatva Classic over the Lux Estate to heavier sleepers, as these individuals will be more prone to sagging over time.

Stearns & Foster Customer Service Rating
- Great: I tested out Stearns & Foster’s customer service by utilizing the chat feature on their website. I was met with a chatbot who was able to provide some helpful answers, but not able to provide more customized answers to specific questions. I wasn’t given the option to speak to a live agent, so that was frustrating. However, I still think they have great customer service because Stearns & Foster offers the option for email and phone communication, as well. Customer support is offered from 9:00am to 9:00pm Monday through Friday, and from 9:00am to 6:00pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Saatva Customer Service Rating
- Stellar: I also tested Saatva’s chat service, where I was initially answered by a chatbot. However, when I said I needed more help, I was connected within seconds to a live agent who provided a thorough, specific answer to my question. This definitely felt like quality customer service. In addition to chat, Saatva also offers phone and email support 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Our Review Process
Our Sleepopolis reviewers personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress.
