Our Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Review, Summarized
The luxuriously priced Black Hybrid XCS mostly delivers on all its promises. We found it to be a firmer-than-average mattress that excels in most categories, including edge support, cooling, and motion isolation. That said, the XCS is unlikely to wow fans of slow-moving memory foam, as its firm surface makes you feel more โon topโ than โinsideโ the mattress. Likewise, side sleepers and lightweight sleepers who are expecting cloud-like contouring and gentle cushioning for pain relief may want to look elsewhere.
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS delivers strong performance in key areas like cooling, edge support, and motion isolation. Its firm feel provides sturdy support that's perfect for back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and couples. That said, it lacks the deep, slow-moving hug of traditional memory foam and softer hybrid models, so side sleepers and lightweight sleepers seeking plush pressure relief may find it too firm.
Our Review Process
At Sleepopolis, our team of certified sleep science coaches personally tests each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time lying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our back, stomach, and side. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on each mattress.

Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Mattress Overview

Beautyrest advertises the Black Hybrid XCS as one of its most advanced mattress lines, touting a triple-stranded pocketed coil system for better support and motion isolation along with a cool-to-the-touch cover. During our testing, it impressed my fellow mattress testers and me in several categories. That said, its firmer-than-average design makes it a better choice for stomach and back sleepers.
Who I Recommend the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Mattress For
- Back sleepers who prefer a firmer sleep surface should appreciate the robust support the Black Hybrid XCS offers.
- Hot sleepers should find that the cool-to-the-touch top layer keeps them comfortable through the night.
- Couples who are easily disturbed by movement will appreciate the Beautyrestโs excellent motion-dampening abilities.

Who I Donโt Recommend the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS For
- Apart from heavier individuals, side sleepers will likely find this mattress too firm and uncompromising.
- Sleepers with existing joint pain or sensitivities would probably benefit from something with more cushioning.

Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Value
A queen-sized Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS is $3,999 before any discounts, making it one of the most expensive beds that the brand offers. That said, for couples and sleepers who need a strong, supportive sleep surface, it could be a worthwhile investment. The durable innerspring coil support system should also help the mattress maintain its shape for many years.
If the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS is out of your budget, the Beautyrest Black Series One offers many of the XCSโs desirable features and similar performance at a fraction of the cost. Be sure to check out our coupons to get the best possible deal.
What Is the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Made Of?

The Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS is a substantial 14.5-inch hybrid mattress that combines multiple layers of memory foam with a supportive pocketed coil system. The memory foam provides some cushioning and pressure relief, while the coils enhance support and help maintain the mattressโs structure. A thick foam encasement surrounds the coils, further adding to its stability and durability.
Cover โ The surface of the Black Hybrid XCS features a soft cover infused with the brandโs BlackICE temperature-regulating material, giving the mattress a cool-to-the-touch feel. During testing, I found it felt crisp and breathable, but not icy-cool to the touch like some of our favorite cooling mattresses. However, it performed surprisingly well on my thermal gun test, so I would readily recommend this to hot sleepers.
Comfort Layers โ The comfort layers of the Black Hybrid XCS lie just beneath the cover layer and consist of alternating memory foam layers meant to contour pressure points without feeling unsupportive. During testing, I thought the XCS felt great on my back; it kept my spine aligned and provided a hint of cushioning around my lower lumbar area for pressure relief. On my side, I found that this mattress was a bit too firm to provide meaningful pressure relief. That said, sleepers with larger bodies might sink further into the foams and experience more cushioning around their hips and shoulders.
Support Layer โ The support layer of the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS consists of zoned innerspring coils that help provide targeted support while isolating motion to either half of the mattress. After testing the Beautyrest, I can safely say it delivers on both fronts.

Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Mattress Firmness
The feel of a mattress largely depends on body weight and preferred sleeping position, which is why we invite testers of different shapes and sizes to help us gauge the firmness of each model. My fellow mattress testers and I rated the firmness of the Black Hybrid XCS on a scale of 1 to 10 (according to our mattress firmness guide) and averaged our individual scores to agree on a firmness rating of 7.5 out of 10.

At 7.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, the Black Hybrid XCS is a good bit firmer than the industry standard of medium-firm, or 6.5 out of 10. During testing, I found that it felt even firmer on my side. A mattress with this firmness is ideal for back and stomach sleeping. While lying on this mattress on my stomach and back, my spine was supported and aligned, but I felt very minimal cushioning. This lack of cushioning could be an issue for some sleepers with back pain, as it doesnโt really fill in the space near your lower lumbar spine at all.
Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Mattress Performance
Whenever a new mattress arrives at our Charlotte, NC, testing studio, our team evaluates it using a thorough review methodology. We use this methodology to test the features that matter most to shoppers, including cooling, edge support, pressure relief, and more. Read on to see where the Black XCS wowed us and where it fell a bit short.
Pressure Relief Performance
Nobody wants to wake up with sore shoulders or an aching back. Thatโs why pressure relief is one of the most important factors we evaluate. Your mattress should contour to your bodyโs curves and cushion key pressure points (such as the shoulders, hips, and lower back).
When testing mattress pressure relief, my team and I lie on it with a pressure-mapping mat placed underneath us. The mat creates a color-coded image showing where pressure accumulates, with cooler colors representing lower pressure and warmer colors signaling higher pressure. These maps help us understand which sleepers are most likely to feel comfortable on a mattress.
The graphic the mat produces also displays the average PSI (pressure per square inch) in both positions. The average PSI measurements for side sleeping and back sleeping are 14.58 and 12.43, respectively. If the numbers are lower than those, it generally means a mattress is good at relieving pressure and preventing future pain.

On the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS, our average-weight tester recorded a PSI of 10.93 while side sleeping and 8.98 while back sleeping. Our lightweight tester, Riley Otis, saw similarly strong results, with a PSI of 10.06 for side sleeping and 8.0 for back sleeping. Her results were especially noteworthy because lightweight sleepers often experience more pressure buildup on firmer mattresses, as they donโt sink deeply enough into the surface to access as much cushioning.

Similarly, our chief medical product tester, Dr. Joe Tedesco, was also surprised by this mattressโs performance for side sleeping.
โI donโt feel any pressure build up because it lets your shoulder sink in really well,โ said Dr. Tedesco. โI donโt feel any real tension there or in my hip. Itโs distributing my weight really well. That said, I feel like I might be a hair out of alignment because my hips are sinking a little lower than my shoulders, which might cause pressure over time.โ
Based on our testersโ feedback and averaged PSI scores, I still generally wouldnโt recommend the Black Hybrid XCS to lightweight individuals or side sleepers. The XCS is highly supportive and much firmer than the average mattress, resulting in minimal surface cushioning. While this extra stability can be beneficial for heavier sleepers who are more likely to experience pressure buildup when a mattress lacks adequate support, it may not provide enough contouring for everyone.
In short, the Black Hybrid XCS could help alleviate pressure caused by an old, sagging mattress, but side sleepers and those with sensitive joints will likely find greater relief on one of our best soft mattress picks.
Motion Isolation
If you wake up frequently throughout the night because of a restless partner or pet, you know how important it is to have a mattress that effectively isolates motion. Our team tests motion isolation on every mattress to see how well it prevents movement from spreading across the entire surface. During testing, we gave the Black Hybrid an impressive motion isolation score of 4.7 out of 5.
Ripple test: For the ripple test, one of our in-house mattress testers lies next to a bin of water on the mattress and moves around beside it to see if it ripples, splashes, or spills over.
During this test, the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS showed impressive motion separation. I could not see much movement in the water basin while getting in and out of bed. I had to move very violently to see even a slight ripple in the water.

Partner test: The most important motion isolation test is the partner test because it directly assesses how well a mattress would perform for couples. One tester wears a blindfold and lies still on one side of the mattress while another gets in and out of bed and rolls around on the other side. The blindfolded tester raises their hand whenever they notice movement.

My partnerโs movements were more noticeable than I expected during this test. I couldnโt tell when she got into bed, but I could feel two of her position switches. I noticed her struggle to move from her side to her stomach and vice versa on this mattress.
Responsiveness
If you tend to change positions during the night, responsiveness can have a big impact on comfort. A mattress with snappy responsiveness will quickly adapt to your movement, preventing the โstuckโ feeling that you might experience on slower-moving foam beds.
Hybrid and innerspring mattresses typically excel in this category thanks to their supportive coil layers, while memory foam models often have a slower response time.
Switch test: For this test, we lie on the bed and note how difficult it is to switch between different sleeping positions. Despite the thick layers of foam, this bed is very easy to move around on (mostly because it is so firm). The top layers sank a little bit when I pressed into the mattress to flip from my side onto my stomach, but I wouldnโt say I was exerting too much effort. I gave this mattress a 4 out of 5 in the responsiveness category overall.
Sinkage test: Our sinkage test involves placing a 53-pound kettlebell on the mattress and using a ruler to measure the sinkage. I measured 3.75 inches of sinkage on the Beautyrest mattress, which placed it in the moderate sinkage category. For reference, light sinkage is up to 2.5 inches, moderate sinkage ranges from 2.6 to 4 inches, and deep sinkage is 4.1 inches or more.

These sinkage results match what I felt during the switch test. The kettlebell creates concentrated pressure, causing it to sink further into the mattress. Likewise, changing positions places additional weight on the hands and knees, resulting in deeper compression in those areas.
As a result, I think lightweight and average-weight combination sleepers should be able to move around comfortably, though heavier sleepers may find repositioning somewhat more difficult.
Bounce test: For this test, a qualified mattress tester climbs a ladder 6 feet above the mattress and drops a 25-pound steel ball. A yardstick on the wall helps us measure how high the ball bounces and determine how responsive the mattress is.
The ball bounced 24 inches during testing, earning the Beautyrest a spot in the high-bounce category (anything higher than 18 inches). Given the mattressโs supportive coils and firmer foam layers, I was not surprised by these results.

Cooling
If you often wake up feeling too warm, a model with additional cooling features can help you stay comfortable throughout the night. Cooling fibers, gel memory foam, and phase change material are all examples of cooling features designed to reduce heat buildup.
Hybrid and innerspring beds are also generally better at cooling as their ventilated coil layers naturally facilitate airflow.
Thermal gun test: To see how much heat the mattress retained, I measured its surface temperature with a thermal gun before and after resting on it for five minutes. After my brief catnap, I saw an impressive 5.8-degree temperature increase, placing the Black Hybrid XCS in the same class as some of the best cooling mattresses.

Feel test: Before, during, and after the thermal gun test, I felt the mattress by hand to determine how quickly it heats up and cools down.
I couldnโt feel it heating up beneath me, but I wouldnโt say the cover was cool to the touch either. I was surprised by how little it increased, as it doesnโt have the same super crisp feel that Tencel covers do.
That said, based on its impressive performance on both tests, I gave the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS a near-perfect 4.5 out of 5 in this category.
Edge Support
We test edge support to determine how well its perimeter maintains its shape when someone is sitting or lying on it. Supportive edges are important for couples, sleepers with bigger bodies, and those with mobility concerns. A reinforced perimeter allows you to rest on the sides without losing support or rolling off. It also gives those with mobility concerns a stable surface to bear down on when they get up in the morning.
Tape measure test: During this test, my fellow testers and I stack weights directly onto the edge of the mattress and measure how much the bed sinks under each load. We repeat this process three times with increasing weight loads: 99 pounds, 154 pounds, and 198 pounds. The testers then record the level of sinkage under each stack of weight using a tape measure.
This tape measure test evaluates how well the mattress supports weight along its perimeter. The 99-pound stack represents lightweight sleepers, the 154-pound stack represents average-weight sleepers, and the 198-pound stack represents heavyweight sleepers. The Black Hybrid XCS mattress sank by 2.5, 3, and 4.5 inches in each category, respectively.

Based on these results, I think most sleepers will find the edges just as firm and supportive as the center of the bed. While those with larger bodies may notice the sinkage a bit more, they should still be able to move toward the edge of the bed without falling off.
Seated test: During the seated edge support test, we sit along the corners and sides of the mattress and stand up. This is repeated multiple times to see how easy it is to get in and out of bed from a seated position. It also tells us how secure you might feel while sitting on the bed and tying your shoes.

I noticed some very slight sinkage while sitting on the side and corners of this mattress. However, itโs so firm and tall that you shouldnโt have to worry about bottoming out. I was able to get in and out of bed without using my hands to push on the edges.
Full body test: Our final test in the edge support category involves lying on the sides of the mattress to see if we can comfortably sleep at the far reaches of the bed without falling.
I was impressed again during this test. The perimeter of this mattress is very supportive while lying down on it. I felt like I was on top of the mattress the entire time.

Mattress Performance for Couples
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS pretty much checks all the boxes for couples. Itโs supportive and responsive enough to prevent you from feeling trapped in its layers during intimate moments, and it effectively isolates motion when youโre on different sides of the bed.
Its 4.5-star cooling also comes in handy if you or your partner is prone to overheating when youโre both in bed.
Other Performance Factors to Consider
Aside from all the technical knitty-gritty we just went over, there are a handful of factors that many overlook when shopping for a mattress. Read more about how the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS performs in the categories below before you buy.
Sex
The best mattresses for sex are those that are easy to move around on, stay relatively cool, and provide stable support along the perimeter. To determine how well a bed meets these criteria, we average its responsiveness, cooling, and edge support scores into a single rating.
The Black Hybrid XCS received high marks in each of these categories, earning it an overall sex score of 4.7 out of 5.
Noise
During testing, I couldnโt hear the foam releasing any air. I also didnโt notice any squeaking from the springs. I think the innerspring coils being wrapped in memory foam helps the Black Hybrid XCS in this category quite a bit.
Durability
Based on its hybrid construction, I expect the XCS to be a highly durable mattress. When we cut into the bed, we could clearly see the thick foam layers and the robust pocketed coil system. The coils are fully encased in dense foam, creating a reinforced support structure that should help the mattress maintain its shape and resist premature sagging for at least 10 years.

Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Sleeping Position and Body Weight
Weight can significantly influence how a mattress feels, which is why our in-house team gathers feedback from testers across a variety of body types. Generally, sleepers with bigger bodies experience mattresses as softer because they tend to sink deeper into the comfort layers.
โLighter sleepers often perceive mattresses as firmer because they sink less and experience a less contouring feel,โ says Dr. Raj Dasgupta. โSleepers with bigger bodies may compress the mattress more significantly, which can make a bed feel softer.โ
Before we dive into our recommendations, though, we want to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call โaverageโ (130 to 230 pounds).
As a general takeaway, lighter sleepers donโt require as much support as average-weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average-weight sleepers and sink into the mattress more. As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers likely need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.
Is the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers โ Back sleepers in this category will probably enjoy the Black Hybrid XCS if they prefer a firmer sleep surface. While they wonโt experience much cushioning in the lower lumbar region, they shouldnโt experience any pressure buildup due to lack of support.
- Light Side Sleepers โ Generally speaking, lightweight side sleepers should avoid this mattress. Side sleepers need cushioning for their shoulders and hips to avoid pain, and this mattress would not provide that for them.
- Light Stomach Sleepers โ Similar to back sleepers, lightweight stomach sleepers should benefit from the supportive surface of the Black Hybrid XCS.
Is the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS a Good Mattress for Average-Weight Sleepers (130โ230 pounds)?
- Average-Weight Back Sleepers โ Average-weight back sleepers who enjoy a firmer feel should love the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS. Since the main draw of this mattress is its firmness and stability, back sleepers should experience healthy spinal alignment and ample lumbar support.
- Average-Weight Side Sleepers โ I think the XCS will feel too firm for many average-weight side sleepers, particularly those who struggle with shoulder or hip pain.
- Average-Weight Stomach Sleepers โ Stomach sleepers should find excellent support on the XCS. Its firm feel helps keep the hips elevated and aligned with the shoulders, reducing the likelihood of lower back strain and promoting proper spinal alignment throughout the night.
Is the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 230 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers โ Back sleepers with bigger bodies should find a strong combination of support and pressure relief on the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS. These sleepers will sink further into the comfort layers, but the robust coil system and firm overall feel should prevent excessive sagging through the midsection.
- Heavy Side Sleepers โ The XCS is on the firmer side, but I think heavy side sleepers will get more pressure relief in this position than light or average-weight sleepers.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers โ The Black Hybrid XCS should be an excellent match for these sleepers. Its durable support system helps keep the hips from sinking too far into the bed, which is essential for maintaining healthy spinal alignment.

โThis mattress is well-made. It easily became a favorite because of how comfortable it is. I was a bit worried that itโd be too firm, but it ended up being a great balance when it comes to supporting different body weights. I have also noticed that it does help with isolating movements, which is a godsend for those who tend to shift a lot during sleep.โ
Tausha M.
โThis bed is the most comfortable bed I have ever owned. It is very supportive and I donโt get hot while laying on it. There was no smell to it and there was no noise while moving around.โ
