Before we get into all the details, I want to give you a brief overview of which sleepers the Wave Hybrid Snow might be best for. Hopefully that’ll save you some time on your mattress search. Depending on your body weight, height, and preferred sleeping position, this bed may or may not work for you. While I can’t make that decision for you, take a look at some of my recommendations below to help you get there on your own.
Who I Recommend the Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress For
- Hot sleepers should read on, as this mattress is loaded with cooling tech. This keeps it nice and breathable.
- Sleepers with back pain could also really like this bed. It’s a luxury mattress designed to promote healthy sleep posture, which is a huge bonus for these sleepers.

So what’s it like to lie down on the Wave Hybrid Snow? Firmness is one of the first factors you should consider when hunting for a new mattress. It’s important to understand that firmness isn’t a one-size fits-all scenario. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. To help get a more unbiased take on feel, I poll a range of folks in the office to get an average firmness rating for each mattress I review.
We decided to give the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This indicates that the Wave Hybrid Snow is a soft to medium-soft mattress. To really determine whether or not a bed is a good fit, it’s important to consider how it performs in different sleeping positions, how it relieves pain and pressure, and how it might feel to couples sharing the bed. Testing the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress In Different Sleeping Positions
Different sleeping positions and weights require different amounts of support. Generally, light sleepers don’t require the same amount of support as heavy sleepers. Read on below to see how the Wave Hybrid Snow mattress performs for sleepers of different weights.
Is the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – I think this bed would be a good option for these folks. Light back sleepers tend to feel mattresses a touch firmer than advertised, so these sleepers should feel a combination of medium-firm support and some nice comfort, thanks to the soft-yet-springy top layer.
- Light Side Sleepers – This bed is going to provide moderate, targeted support and cradling at just the right areas, particularly hips and shoulders, that will benefit these light side sleepers. However, some side sleepers may be interested in looking for a more plush, foam feel.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers may experience the mattress as medium-firm rather than medium-soft, but I still wouldn’t recommend it to these sleepers. Stomach sleepers may find a lack of support from the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow.
Is the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – I think average weight back sleepers will really benefit from this bed. They’ll get great pressure relief at their lumbar region from the top layer of foam.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – Average weight side sleepers should experience a blend of balanced support — due to the poly foam build, and pressure relief — thanks to the targeted gel pods, making it an excellent choice for them.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend this mattress to average weight stomach sleepers, who need a firmer mattress to prevent sinkage at the hips.
Is the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow a Good Mattress For Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – Heavy sleepers might want to look into a firmer, more supportive option — like one of our best innerspring mattresses.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – See above.

Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief is a measure of how well a mattress cushions sensitive pain points around your hips, shoulders, and lower back. If you wake up with achy hips or stiff shoulders every morning, you’re likely sleeping on a mattress that doesn’t offer you the right amount of pressure relief.
To measure pressure relief, I use a pressure map. Basically, I roll a mat that records my body weight out onto a mattress and lie on top in a few different positions. The mat creates a color-coded “map” of pressure my body exerted on the mattress. High pressure is recorded in red to yellow, while low pressure is recorded in blue to green. Take a look at my results below.
Back Pain — As you can see, the map is nice and blue on my back. This is in line with my experience on the bed, my spine felt nice and straight, while the Wave’s top foams filled in my lower back area for a nice cushioning feel. I want to note that this is one of my favorite mattresses for back pain on the market. It’s constructed specifically to keep your spine in a straight, healthy line, which is a great way to relieve or avoid back pain. I’d highly recommend back, combination, and side sleepers who struggle with back pain give the Wave Hybrid Snow a try.
Shoulder Pain — You’ll see a little green around my hips on the map. In my opinion, this doesn’t show too much pressure, and tells me that this bed is a great pick for most strict side sleepers. Personally, I really liked how it felt to lie on my side on the Wave. But if you’re especially prone to sore hips or shoulders, a softer bed like the Casper Nova Hybrid might be a better fit. In the same way that this mattress is great for back pain, it is also great for shoulder pain, especially for side and back combo sleepers.
Hip Pain — The map here is all blue on my stomach, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. I felt my hips sinking into the surface of this bed, throwing them out of alignment with my shoulders. This can lead to back pain over time, and is a common problem for stomach sleepers on softer mattresses. If that sounds like you, I’d recommend opting for one of our best firm mattresses instead. On the flip side, I highly recommend this mattress for back sleepers, and side sleepers, with hip pain. The bed has some zoned support perfect to target hips in need of some pain relief.
Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Performance For Couples
When sharing the bed with a partner, you’ll want to keep a few more things in mind while shopping for a new mattress. Features you’ll want to consider include motion transfer, performance during sex, cooling, and edge support.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is a measure of how much movement on one side of the bed is detectable on the other side of the bed. If you sleep with a partner or pet this is essentially a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to feel them tossing and turning or getting in and out of bed.
To measure motion transfer, I drop a 10-pound steel ball onto the bed and measure the disturbance it caused on the other side of the bed with a seismometer. The bigger the seismometer lines, the more likely you are to feel a partner tossing and turning on your side of the bed.
FYI: Each drop is meant to symbolize a different movement you’re likely to experience in bed, from tossing and turning (4 inches) to getting out of bed (8 inches) all the way to full on jumping (12 inches).
These are great motion transfer results, especially for a hybrid mattress. You’re unlikely to feel a partner rolling around or changing positions on this bed. But, if you have a dog that likes to hop on the bed at night, you’ll probably feel that motion.
Sex
The best mattress for couples often combines responsiveness and motion isolation. This creates a nice balance of mobility and lack of disturbance during sexual activity. I’d say the Wave Hybrid Snow does a great job of striking this balance, which is why I recommend it to couples.
Cooling
If Snow in the name didn’t give it away, let me go ahead and tell you that this mattress gets all five stars for its cooling capabilities. The Wave Hybrid Snow incorporates Casper’s most advanced technologies: HeatDetele bands and the QuickCool cover, to prevent any overheating from happening. The AirScape foam also helps to ventilate heat while letting air flow. All in all, this mattress will absolutely keep you at a comfortable temperature.
Edge Support
Edge support is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the side of your bed and still feel well supported. Strong edges can make a mattress feel bigger, and are a good sign that you have a durable bed.
I test edge support by lying and sitting on the edge of the bed. I thought the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow had good edge support. I felt well-supported by the sides of the Wave and didn’t feel as though it lacked support that would pose difficulties for couples wanting to use all of the mattress.
What Is the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress Made Of?
Next, let’s take a second to go over what the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow is made of. This is where I’ll describe its cooling features and zoned support system in more detail.
Overall, this 13-inch tall bed felt nice and cool to the touch. I’d highly recommend it to any sleepers who prioritize breathability.
Cover — The Wave uses a QuickCool mattress cover infused with Phase Change Material. This material reflects body heat to prevent it from getting trapped in the mattress. It’s also humidity-fighting, which is a nice perk for anyone who sleeps in a more humid environment.
Comfort Layer — Next up is a layer of Airscape foam infused with cooling gel and more Phase Change material. This layer feels soft-yet-springy, and uses an open-cell design. This means it promotes airflow throughout the bed and doesn’t trap much body heat.
Transition Layer — Up next is a bouncy layer of natural latex foam that helps ease sleepers down onto the firmer layers below. Latex foam is naturally cooling, and this layer includes Casper’s special HeatDelete bands that help dissipate body heat.
Zoned Support Layer — Below that is a layer of zoned poly foam that includes special gel pods in the center. This layer is softer around the shoulders and feet for extra pressure relief. It’s firmer around the hips and lower back for extra support. The gel pods in this layer work to keep your spine neutrally aligned throughout the night, which is very important for combatting back pain.
Foundation Layer — Rounding things out is a layer of bouncy pocketed coils. These coils are individually wrapped, which helps promote even more airflow throughout the mattress.
Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Unboxing and Off-Gassing
The Wave Hybrid Snow is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which means it will arrive compressed and will have to be unboxed at home. As with all bed-in-a-box mattresses, you’ll need to wait at least 24 hours for this bed to fully decompress.
As with many new mattresses, the Wave Hybrid Snow will likely emit a smell when it is first unboxed — this is known as off-gassing. Although this smell is not harmful, all the foams are CertiPUR-US® certified, it does come with that “new mattress” smell. If you experience off-gassing, I recommend leaving the mattress in a well ventilated room and within a day or two the smell should be gone.

My Favorite Things About Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress
This luxury mattress is loaded with awesome features that make it well-worth the investment. It’s incredibly cooling, which is a great perk for almost any sleeper. But in addition to that, I think it’s the most supportive mattress in Casper’s line, which makes it ideal for sleepers looking to prevent or relieve back pain. I also like it’s medium-soft feel for back, side, and combination sleepers.
My Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress Complaints
I don’t have many complaints about the mattress itself, but I do want to note that Casper had a few supply chain issues when launching this bed. So, if your new mattress does not completely decompress 24-48 hours after unboxing, I’d recommend unzipping the cover and taking a look at the foams inside. If they look flat (or generally different than they do in the picture above), you’ve received a defective mattress.
If that’s the case, don’t panic! My first Snow mattress didn’t decompress properly either. Casper has a stellar customer service team that will send you a new Wave Hybrid Snow mattress ASAP. But keep this in mind so that you don’t settle for sleeping on a mattress that isn’t working properly.
