If you prefer buying American-made products or from family-owned businesses, you’ll love DLX, a mattress company making hand-crafted luxury mattresses since 1886. The brand offers five unique mattress models with different types of constructions, and most models are offered in a range of firmness options. Today, I’ll be reviewing the brand’s 2024 best-selling product, the DLX Premier Hybrid.

Since 2014, the Sleepopolis team has tested more than 330 mattresses in our Charlotte, NC, studio and helped 60,108 people find the right mattress for them. I’m a certified sleep science coach and have been testing beds for three years using our medically reviewed testing methodology, which is designed to find the best mattresses for specific types of sleepers.

Our team works with a network of sleep experts and medical professionals, including board-certified doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors, and registered nurses, who review our findings for accuracy from a medical perspective. We developed our testing methodology with help from our Chief Medical Advisor Dr Raj. Dasgupta MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, who also provides us with general advice on common sleep issues and what sleepers need most from a mattress.

When I tested the Premier Hybrid, I found a true medium-firm feel that’s most compatible with back and side sleeping. I was also impressed with its performance in all of our performance tests, as it earned 4.3 stars or above on all of our tests. It performed especially well in the categories most relevant to couples: cooling, responsiveness, motion isolation, and edge support.

Pros of the DLX Premier
The DLX offers a balanced, medium-firm feel, with contouring and support in equal measure.
Back sleepers should feel supported, with their spines neutrally aligned.
Side sleepers should get the pressure relief they need.
Cons of the DLX
The DLX Premier isn’t supportive enough to be one of the best mattresses for heavy sleepers, which accommodate folks weighing 230 pounds or more. While heavy back sleepers might be comfortable, heavy side sleepers and stomach sleepers will probably need a different bed.
While the removable comfort layer provides some customization and is an interesting feature, it does require some time to remove and reinsert.

Available in three different firmness levels, the DLX is Premier hybrid mattress that we found to have a medium-firm feel, as well as enough support for back sleepers and enough cushioning for side sleepers. Its cooling capabilities, motion isolation, and edge support also make it a home run for couples. Most interesting of all, it has a removable comfort layer that provides some customization.

What our tester says:

DLX Premier Hybrid Mattress Overview

The DLX Premier Hybrid is a luxury mattress offered in both 12-inch and 14-inch models. Additionally, the mattress comes in Soft, Medium, and Firm options, so you can choose the feel most compatible with your sleeping position and personal preference. Regardless of which height and firmness you choose, the mattress sells for the same $1,699.99 price for a queen. In this review, I’ll refer to the 14-inch model in the Medium firmness level, which I tested in our studio.

This mattress is made from a tall layer of innerspring coils, a removable foam insert, and a quilted foam cover. While DLX’s flagship model is flippable, this model should only be used with the quilted cover face up. The top layers provide some slight sinkage and cushioning, which helps relieve pressure along the body’s sensitive joints. The coils add some firm support and lift that provides an “on” the bed feel, rather than an “in” the bed feel.

A bed-in-a-box mattress, the Premier Hybrid ships for free and will arrive at your door compressed in a box and ready to be unwrapped and inflated. The bed isn’t too heavy, and we found it easy for just one person to unbox and move the mattress, thanks to the handles on the side. The mattress had a slight “new car scent” that dissipated within a few hours. This is very typical to find from boxed mattresses; it’s called off-gassing and is simply the factory-air-trapped foam being released as the bed decompresses.

One thing that stands out to me about this mattress is its removable comfort layer. This layer arrives separately from the mattress itself and must be zipped into the bed during setup. This wasn’t difficult to do, but it was an extra step in the process. Without this layer, you’re basically just lying on a layer of coils, so it’s essential to the overall comfort of the mattress. Depending on the firmness you select at checkout, the layer will feel Soft, Medium, or Firm. When I tested the mattress in the Medium model, it earned an overall average score of 4.7 out of 5 stars.

DLX Premier Hybrid Value

We evaluate a mattress’s value by looking at its materials and whether their quality and the bed’s performance match the price. The DLX Premier Hybrid is marketed as a luxury mattress, which naturally comes at a higher price point due to its higher-quality materials and construction. For a queen size, this bed is typically sold for $1,699.99. The foams inside the mattress are high-quality in terms of safety and durability, earning a CertiPUR-US certification verifying the material contains no heavy metals or harmful chemicals.

With luxury mattresses such as this, I typically expect to see qualities not usually found in standard beds. The Premier Hybrid doesn’t contain any unique materials, such as gel or copper infusions in the foam, or upgraded constructions like zoned-support coils. While its 4.7-star overall performance is impressive, there are cheaper hybrid mattresses. For example, the DLX Classic Hybrid is around $700 cheaper, yet contains similar materials and a unique flippable construction.

However, you get more cushion from this bed than the DLX Classic, and we definitely appreciate that this sturdy hybrid model costs less than $2,000.

What Is the DLX Premier Hybrid Made Of?

Here at Sleepopolis, we know the best way to evaluate what’s inside a mattress is by actually looking inside. We use a box cutter to cut into the side of every mattress we test so we can assess the material layer by layer.

The DLX Premier Hybrid combines high-quality, CertiPUR-US certified foams with a supportive layer of coils to create a balance between pressure relief and spinal alignment. The mattress is offered in both 14-inch and 12-inch models, and I chose to test the taller option. Additionally, the bed comes in three firmness models — Soft, Medium, and Firm.

Something unique about this bed is its removable comfort layer. This is included with the purchase, but doesn’t come already inside the mattress. You can add it after the bed has inflated by simply unzipping the perimeter of the mattress, placing the layer of foam inside, and zipping it back up.

DLX Premier Hybrid

Cover – The cover is made from DLX’s “Hyperflex Fabric,” which has a soft, slightly fuzzy texture that feels similar to a quilt. The surface contains a swirl design that gives the bed a luxury look. There’s a layer of foam woven into the cover, which creates a mini-pillow-top effect that offers initial cushioning on the body.

Comfort Layer – Next is a 3-inch layer of blue foam that must be zipped into the bed upon arrival. It’s moderately dense and brings both pressure relief and comfort to the mattress.

Transition Layer – Below that is a very thin transition layer of white foam that is only ¾ of an inch tall. This layer is lightweight and has a quick response to pressure, as it eases the sleeper onto the support layer

Support Layer – Next is a tall layer of coils that is either 6 or 8 inches tall, depending on the height of the model you choose. Each coil has been individually wrapped, so it moves independently as pressure is applied.

Base Layer – At the base of the mattress, one inch of dense foam gives the coils something to bounce off of.

DLX Premier Hybrid Mattress Firmness

When we talk about firmness level in mattresses, we know that no two sleepers experience mattresses in the exact same way. What feels very soft to one sleeper may feel a lot firmer to a sleeper with a different body type or preferred sleeping position. To combat this, we ask multiple expert testers to weigh in. Each tester provides their personal firmness score, and then we average them together to create our final firmness rating. We rate firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. We consider a 6.5 out of 10 to mark a true medium-firm feel, which is the most popular feel on the market.

Firmness 6.5 1 930x275 1

When we tested the DLX Premier Hybrid, we thought it had a classic medium-firm feel that falls at a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. While the quilted foam cover allowed for a bit of sinkage, the softness was balanced by the coils that lifted my body up and out of the structure,

When I tested this bed, I thought it felt slightly firmer when lying on my side, but it was soft enough to cushion my hips and shoulders in this position. In fact, I thought the mattress provided great pressure relief in all three sleeping positions, as well as great spinal alignment. That’s why medium firmness is the most popular feel on the mattress market. It’s typically compatible with most sleepers, regardless of their sleeping position or body type.

DLX Premier Hybrid Mattress Performance

While the construction and firmness of a mattress are important factors to consider, there’s a lot more that influences the way a mattress will perform for you. I tested this mattress in the Sleepopolis studio with my fellow testers Sosha Lewis and Kayla Godfrey to assess it for pressure relief, motion isolation, responsiveness, cooling, and edge support.

We collected both quantitative and qualitative data to help us better understand the mattress and make very specific recommendations about who it might be best for. Below, I’ll dive into each test I performed and how the DLX Premier Hybrid stacked up.

DLX Premier Hybrid Pressure Relief Performance

Regardless of your body type or preferred sleeping position, pressure relief is an important factor to pay attention to. Our Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta says memory foam is one of the best materials for pressure relief, so I had a suspicion that the thick foam comfort layer would give the DLX mattress a high score.

We test how well a mattress relieves pressure using a tool called a pressure mat, which we spread out onto the surface of a mattress before lying on it in the back- and side-sleeping position. The mat is able to sense where pressure is building along the body and then generate a color-coded thermal image. Areas of the body that display blue and green indicate low pressure buildup, and yellow and red suggest a lot of pressure is building.

Keep in mind that your body type is a major determinant of whether or not you’ll experience good pressure relief on a bed. Heavy sleepers weighing over 230 pounds typically experience mattresses as softer than average, as they sink further into the layers than average and lightweight sleepers. I fall in the lightweight category, so I invited my fellow tester Sosha Lewis, who falls in the average-weight category, to also lie on the pressure mat to get a fair assessment of the DLX Premier Hybrid.

Sosha and I gave the mattress 4.5 out of 5 stars in the side-sleeping position and 5 stars in the back-sleeping position. When we average these together, we get a total pressure-relief score of 4.8 stars.

I think the DLX Premier Hybrid is a great match for lightweight and average-weight side sleepers. In this position, my spine felt perfectly aligned, and I even felt some relief in my lower back. Since I’m in the lightweight sleeper category, I didn’t sink very far into this bed. I mostly received cushioning from the quilted cover, and the comfort layer prevented me from sinking into the coils. Since Sosha weighs more than me, she found more sinkage and body contouring, yet still felt “on” the bed.

When I switched onto my back, I felt a perfect mix of support and comfort. My shoulders and hips were on the same plane, making my spine as straight as an arrow. I also appreciated the foam quilted into the cover, as this filled in the space at my lower back and added additional lumbar support. Since the bed is medium firm, there was still a touch of softness that was cozy enough to snuggle into.

DLX Premier Hybrid Motion Isolation

If you sleep with a partner, you may want to pay extra attention to this section. Motion isolation refers to the bed’s ability to stop movement from traveling and disturbing the sleeper on the other side. If you sleep lightly, this is especially important, as it prevents you from feeling your partner tossing and turning throughout the night. When we asked Dr. Raj Dasgupta, he told us that a bed’s ability to isolate motion speaks to its material quality, construction, and overall comfort. We tested motion isolation in our studio using a ripple test and a partner test. The DLX Premier Hybrid earned an overall score of 4.3 out of 5 stars in this category.

I performed the ripple test by placing a large tub of water on one side of the mattress and then moving around on the other side. As I climbed in and out of bed and switched between positions, my fellow testers watched the water to see if it was affected by my motion. The water gently rippled when I got in and out of bed, but it was only on the surface of the water — it never sloshed up the sides of the tub. When I switched between positions, the water began to gently sway, but it never looked like ocean waves. This means the bed mostly muffled my motion, but the water was still lightly disturbed, so I gave this bed 4 stars for motion isolation when getting in bed and switching positions.

Our tester Riley Otis performs a ripple test on the DLX Premier Hybrid.

Next, we took away the water tub, and I lay down with my eyes closed in the same spot. Luckily, the mattress was completely dry from the ripple test. My testing partner then climbed into bed next to me and rolled around a bit to simulate sleeping with a restless partner. I gave this test 5 stars because the motion isolation was sublime. The thick foam inside the bed did a great job of  absorbing my partner’s movement and preventing it from traveling to my side of the bed.

Based on the above results, I think most sleepers won’t experience sleep disruption due to a partner’s movement, including light sleepers. However, the ripple test did indicate some slight but continuous motion disturbance, so light sleepers with a restless partner may want a bed containing more foam, as the DLX Premier Hybrid does have a decent amount of bounce.

DLX Premier Hybrid Responsiveness

Responsiveness refers to how quickly the bed bounces back to its original shape after pressure has been applied. Typically, hybrid mattresses containing spring coils are very bouncy and responsive. However, they can be hard to move around on if the top layers of foam are too soft — they can trap the body rather than assist it from one position to the next. Due to its bouncy innerspring layer and “on” the bed feel, the DLX Premier Hybrid excelled on our responsiveness tests, earning a perfect 5-star score.

Switch test: This subjective test gives us an idea of how easy it is to move around on the mattress. This is important for both combination sleeping and sex, as it allows you to quickly and easily switch positions. I found it very easy to switch from my back to my side to my stomach, so I gave this test 5 stars. Although the bed has a touch of softness to it, there’s not too much sinkage, so my movement wasn’t inhibited by the foam layers or quilted cover.

Responsiveness test: In this test, I collected data on how quickly a mattress snaps back to its original shape after pressure has been applied. I first placed a 53-pound kettlebell on the mattress for 7 seconds and then pulled it straight up. A stopwatch showed that it took only 0.6 seconds for the mattress to rise when the weight was pulled. This is pretty quick, earning the mattress 4 stars, but we’ve seen more responsive beds bounce back in less than 0.5 seconds.

Our tester performs a response test on the DLX Premier Hybrid mattress.

Sinkage test: Next, I placed the 53-pound kettlebell back on the bed and used a ruler to measure exactly how far it sank in. I found exactly 3 inches of sinkage, which is slightly less than the 3.7-inch average. This is classified as “moderate sinkage” and earns the bed 5 stars.

Bounce test: Finally, we tested the bed’s bounce level by climbing 6 feet above the mattress and dropping a 25-pound steel ball onto its surface. A yardstick on the wall showed how high the ball bounced. On the DLX Premier Hybrid, the ball rebounded 30 inches into the air, which is significantly higher than the 16.3-inch average. Since this is one of the bounciest beds I’ve ever tested, it earned 5 stars for this test.

DLX Premier Hybrid Cooling

When you wake up frequently feeling overheated, it can make your sleep experience very uncomfortable. If you’re a hot sleeper, you can benefit from mattresses with cooling materials and breathable constructions. We tested the DLX Premier Hybrid’s cooling abilities using a thermal gun test, a cover test, and a feel test to create a final cooling score of 4.5 stars.

Thermal gun test: This test provides us with a quantitative understanding of how the bed responds to body heat and how well it regulates temperature. I used a thermal gun to measure the mattress’s initial temperature and then lay down on it for 5 minutes. When the timer went off, I recorded the bed’s temperature again and calculated how much it had heated up. In this test, if the temperature increases by fewer than 4 degrees, we consider it to have excellent cooling. An increase of 4.1 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, and more than 15 degrees indicates poor cooling.

Taking thermal readings from the DLX Premier Hybrid mattress.
Taking thermal readings from the DLX Premier Hybrid mattress.

The DLX Premier Hybrid went from 69.7 degrees to 74.2 degrees after I lay on it for 5 minutes. This is only a 4.5-degree temperature increase, so the bed earned 4.5 stars for this test.

Cover test: When I first lay down on the bed, I paid attention to whether it felt cool to the touch or noticeably warm. I thought it felt simply temperature neutral — not necessarily cold, but not warm, either. I didn’t get an immediate cooling sensation from just the cover alone.

Feel test: As I lay on the mattress for 5 minutes, I observed whether I could feel it heating up beneath me, as well as my own body temperature. I thought the mattress’s temperature felt pretty consistent with my body temperature, and I didn’t think it heated up at all. While it wasn’t cooling, it did a great job at regulating my temperature and preventing me from overheating.

Based on these results, I think the vast majority of sleepers will be comfortable on the DLX Premier Hybrid. However, if you know you sleep extra-hot, you may want to consider a bed that is constructed with more cooling materials and a cool-to-the-touch cover.

DLX Premier Hybrid Edge Support

Edge support refers to the strength of the mattress’s perimeter. When the bed has strong edges, it feels just as supportive and secure from one end to the other. This allows sleepers to fully spread out and sleep right up to the side of the bed without feeling like they’re about to fall off. This is something couples may want to pay attention to, as strong edge support can make the bed feel larger. This is also appealing to older adults and people with mobility issues, as they can rely on the edge for support when getting in and out of bed. To evaluate the DLX Premier here, we performed a tape measure test, a seated test, and a full body test to create a final score of 4.6  stars.

Tape measure test: This test, also called our weighted edge support test, involves stacking weighted plates together to represent different body types. We created a 99-pound stack, a 154-pound stack, and a 198-pound stack and placed them individually on the edge of the bed. We then used a tape measure to determine how many inches the layers collapsed under the weight.

Our tester measures weight plate deflection on the edge of a DLX Hybrid mattress
Our tester measures weight plate deflection on the edge of a DLX Hybrid mattress.

From the lightest to the heaviest stacks, the sinkage went from 2.5 inches to 3.5 inches to 4.5 inches. When we combine the ratings from all three stacks, the DLX Premier hybrid got an average score of 4.3 stars.

Seated test: Next, I sat down directly on the edge of the mattress and then stood up several times. I paid attention to whether the edges supported my weight or if I was sinking enough to feel unstable. When I sat on the foot of the bed, it was extremely weak and I almost sank down to the base. However, I felt extremely secure and stable when sitting on the side of the bed. There was only the slightest bit of sinkage into the foam, and I never felt like I was about the fall off. I think I could easily sit on the side of the bed for long periods of time and feel supported, so the seated test earned 5 stars.

Full body test: Next, I lay near the edge of the bed on my back, side, and stomach and observed my stability. I thought the edge felt just as supportive as the very center of the bed, and I felt completely secure. Regardless of my sleeping position, I didn’t notice the edges collapsing significantly, so I gave the lying-down test 5 stars. Overall, I think couples will be able to use the full area of the mattress with no issue. Solo sleepers can also spread out as much as they want.

DLX Premier Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples

If you sleep with a partner, cooling, responsiveness, edge support, and motion isolation are the most important categories to consider. Based on the DLX Premier Hybrid’s performance in these categories, I think it’s an excellent choice for couples.

This mattress earned at least 4.3 stars in each of these categories. It excelled the most in responsiveness, earning 5 stars, which means sexually active couples will be able to move around easily. With 4.6-star edge support, both partners can spread out without crowding the middle of the bed. The DLX also earned 4.5 stars for cooling, so you won’t need to worry about two people overheating the mattress at night. And although it scored lowest in motion isolation, the 4.3-star rating indicates most sleepers won’t experience heavy disturbance from a tossing-and-turning partner.

Other Performance Factors to Consider

In addition to the tests I performed above, I evaluated the DLX Premier Hybrid for a few more elements that you may want to keep in mind when making your purchase.

Sex

We create our score for sex based on responsiveness, cooling, and edge support. The best mattresses for sex typically earn high scores in the cooling category, which suggests they’ll prevent overheating during the act. Strong edges are also important, as they allow you to feel supported on every inch of the bed. A responsive bed also helps couples switch between different positions without getting stuck in the foam layers.

With 5-star responsiveness, 4.6-star edge support, and 4.5-star cooling, the DLX Premier Hybrid earned an average of 4.7 stars in this category. Based on this score, I think this mattress is an excellent choice for sexually active couples.

Noise

I tested the bed’s noise level by jumping up and down, pressing into the layers, and switching between positions. No matter how hard I pressed, the mattress was completely silent. The pocketed coils moved quietly, and I didn’t hear a single creak from them. I gave the bed 5 stars for noise because it’s super discreet, and your movement won’t create sleep-disturbing noise.

Base Compatibility

I tested the DLX Premier’s compatibility with an adjustable base by placing it on a base in our studio and cycling through the TV and zero gravity settings. I thought the mattress did a pretty good job bending with the base, but there are a few things to keep in mind. When moving from flat to the TV setting, I could feel the coils moving beneath me, almost vibrating as they were forced to bend more and more. There was also a slight gap where the bottom of the mattress didn’t meet the base, but the bed was still usable.

I was mostly bothered by the quilted foam cover bunching up, as this wasn’t super-comfortable to lie on. Overall, I gave the base compatibility 3 stars because it performs fine with slight head and leg elevation, but it’s not perfect in any of the pre-settings.

Riley Otis tries a DLX Premier Hybrid mattress on an adjustable base.

Durability

When purchasing a new mattress, you’ll want to get years and years of sleep out of it. We assess durability by looking at the bed’s materials, support, edge support, and warranty. Strong support throughout the whole mattress helps prevent premature sagging. High-quality materials are also likely to last longer than cheap ones. The warranty can also give us an understanding of how long the retailer expects the bed to last.

Based on those criteria, I think the DLX Premier Hybrid is a good choice if you’re seeking a durable mattress. The foams inside the bed are of very high quality and have earned the CertiPUR-US certification for the material’s safety. The 4.6-star edge support also makes me think this bed is unlikely to sag along the sides. However, I could see the foot of the bed sagging over time if you’re consistently sitting on it, as it was much less supportive than the side of the bed. Additionally, the brand offers a lifetime warranty on all mattresses, so you’re protected against manufacturing defects.

DLX Premier Hybrid Sleeping Position and Body Weight

Your sleeping position and body weight are the most important factors in determining how a mattress feels. For example, what feels very firm to a lightweight side sleeper might be too soft for a heavy stomach sleeper. To help determine whether this mattress is right for you, we tested it using three testers in different weight classes who tried the bed in all three sleeping positions. Below, I’ve summarized the bed’s performance for each sleeping position and body type.

Before we dive into our recommendations, though, we want to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 230 pounds).

As a general takeaway, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average-weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers need more support than average-weight sleepers and sink into the mattress more. As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers often need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.

Is the DLX Premier Hybrid a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?

  • Light Back Sleepers – These sleepers will experience cushioning at the lower back from the quilted cover, while also receiving enough lift at the hips to keep the spine aligned.
  • Light Side Sleepers – The spinal alignment is great in this position, yet you’ll still get good cushioning at the hips and shoulders.
  • Light Stomach Sleepers – The medium-firm feel is still firm enough to keep these sleepers’ hips in line with their shoulders, and they’ll get a touch of cushioning at their chest and hips.
Our tester stomach-sleeping on the DLX Premier Hybrid
Our tester stomach sleeping on the DLX Premier Hybrid.

Is the DLX Premier Hybrid a Good Mattress for Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 pounds)?

  • Average-Weight Back Sleepers – These sleepers will find great lumbar support on this mattress, as well as proper spinal alignment.
  • Average-Weight Side Sleepers – These sleepers will experience cushioning at the hips and shoulders from the soft comfort layer, yet will still find enough lift to keep the spine aligned.
  • Average-Weight Stomach Sleepers – Those on the heavier side of the average-weight spectrum may find their hips sinking too far into the foam, which can throw the spine out of alignment and lead to lower back pain.

Is the DLX Premier Hybrid a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 230 pounds)?

  • Heavy Back Sleepers – These sleepers will likely find this mattress softer than medium-firm, but it’s still supportive enough to keep their spine aligned.
  • Heavy Side Sleepers – These sleepers may need a firmer mattress with even more support to prevent too much sinkage in this position.
  • Heavy Stomach Sleepers – This bed isn’t supportive enough for heavy sleepers in this position. These folks would benefit from an ultra-supportive mattress that prevents the hips from dipping below the shoulders..

My Final Thoughts About the DLX Premier Hybrid Mattress

Let’s quickly recap some of my favorite things about the DLX Premier Hybrid mattress, as well as some areas it falls short.

Who I Recommend the DLX Premier Hybrid For

  • This bed is a dream for back sleepers, providing a blend of firm support and soft cushioning.
  • This bed is extremely bouncy and easy to move on, making it ideal for combination sleepers and sex.
  • Side sleepers should also feel comfortable in this position, achieving great spinal alignment while getting cushioning at the body’s sensitive pressure points.
  • This bed performed exceptionally well in cooling, motion isolation, responsiveness, and edge support, making it a solid choice for couples.

Who I Don’t Recommend the DLX Premier Hybrid For

  • Most average-weight and heavy stomach sleepers will find this bed too soft to keep the hips lifted and the spine straight. We’d recommend a firmer option with less sinkage.
  • Those seeking deep sinkage and body contouring may prefer a memory foam mattress with all-foam construction.

DLX Premier Hybrid vs. Competitor

The DLX Premier Hybrid is a medium-firm mattress with a hybrid construction, which is the most popular type of mattress on the market. Let’s compare the bed to a similar competitor, the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid mattress.

DLX Premier Hybrid vs DreamCloud Classic Hybrid

Like the DLX, the DreamCloud Hybrid falls at a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale and has a quilted cover that creates a small pillow top effect. However, the DreamCloud comes at a more affordable price, especially after discounts are offered. It scored higher in motion isolation, yet earned a lower score in edge support — 4 stars compared to the DLX’s 4.6 stars.

  • Price: The DreamCloud is often on sale and available for a full $1,000 less than the DLX in a queen size.
  • Sleeping position: Both mattresses earned perfect scores in the back sleeping position, which also being compatible with side sleeping.
  • Cooling: Both mattresses earned 4.5 stars on our cooling test, making either a good choice for hot sleepers.
  • Body weight: For heavy sleepers, we recommend choosing these beds in the Firm option for more support.

I have purchased 5 different Dreamcloud mattresses over the years and never once disappointed. Always fast shipping. Fantastic pricing. But by far the best feature is the quality of the Dreamcloud mattress. Also very impressed with the free bedding (sheets) that came with my recent two purchases. Don’t change what you are doing/offering. It’s perfect in every way.

Our Review Process

At Sleepopolis, our team of certified sleep science coaches personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time lying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress.

FAQs

Where is the DLX Premier Hybrid mattress made?

The DLX Premier Hybrid is made in the U.S. It ships from DLX’s factory in Jamestown, New York.

Does the DLX Premier hybrid come with a sleep trial period?

Yes, the DLX Premier Hybrid comes with a 120-night sleep trial period.

Does the DLX Premier Hybrid come with a mattress warranty?

Yes, the DLX Premier Hybrid comes with a lifetime warranty.

How firm is the DLX Classic mattress?

The DLX Premier Hybrid is offered in three firmness levels — Soft, Medium, and Firm. We tested the Medium model and thought it landed at a 6.5 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This means it has a true medium-firm feel that offers both firm support and soft cushioning.

Who is best for the DLX Premier Hybrid mattress?

We found this bed best suited for back sleepers of all body types and lightweight and average-weight side sleepers. While we think lightweight stomach sleepers will feel supported on this mattress, those weighing over 130 pounds may find their hips sinking too far into the soft foam comfort layer, which can throw the spine out of alignment and cause back pain.

Does the DLX Premier Hybrid require a box spring?

It doesn’t require a box spring, but you can add one if you want more height to your bed. This bed can also be used on platform beds and slatted bases. You can use this bed on an adjustable base, but we’d recommend avoiding positions that require it to bend too much.
