I’ll cover my experience testing the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress, including the results of our tests in factors like cooling, pressure relief, motion transfer, and more.

DreamCloud is an online mattress retailer that’s been best known for offering affordable luxury hybrid mattresses. However, the brand recently expanded their offerings to include all-foam versions of each of the three original hybrid DreamCloud mattresses — the DreamCloud, DreamCloud Premier, and DreamCloud Premier Rest. In this review, I’ll be covering the all-foam version of the flagship DreamCloud Original mattress: the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress.

I’ve always liked the original DreamCloud, as it has a high-quality feel but is offered at an affordable price point, so I was excited to try out the memory foam version. I personally tested this mattress to determine the firmness level and see how each sleeping position feels on it, as well as testing it on performance factors like motion isolation, temperature regulation, and more.

DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress Overview

The DreamCloud Memory Foam is a bed-in-a-box memory foam mattress with a firm feel. This bed is the all-foam version of the original DreamCloud Hybrid model and shares many of that bed’s characteristics. It features several layers of foam, including gel-infused memory foam, and has a quilted cashmere blend cover.

Since it is a firm mattress, I think the DreamCloud Memory Foam is well-suited for light to average weight stomach and back sleepers. I think it could work for some heavy back sleepers, but it’s worth noting that a bed with coils will provide more support for heavy folks.

Additionally, the DreamCloud Memory Foam is a good choice for couples. It performed well in four of the tests that are most relevant for couples: motion isolation, responsiveness, cooling, and edge support. Read more on these tests in the performance section of this review.

Since this bed ships compressed in a box, I recommend having a friend help you unbox it. It’s also a good idea to let the bed fully inflate and air out any off-gassing smells for a day or so before use.

What Is the DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress Made Of? 

Let’s take a closer look at what the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress is made with.

Cover – The DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress has a quilted cashmere blend cover, which provides some initial plushness and softness to the surface of the mattress. The cover is quilted with gel memory foam.

Comfort Layer – The comfort layer is a 2-inch section of gel-infused memory foam, which is meant to provide cushioning and pressure relief. 

Transition Layer – Between the comfort layer and support layer is a 1-inch section of gel foam that’s more responsive than the comfort layer, which is meant to distribute the body’s weight evenly and serve as a transition between the plusher layer above and the firmer layer below.

Support Layer – The main support of the mattress is an 8-inch section of sturdy base foam. This provides spinal support and structure for the layers above.

DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress Firmness 

Here at Sleepopolis, we rate firmness on a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. We use 6.5 as the standard for medium-firm, the most common mattress firmness. To determine the firmness, we lay on each mattress and change between sleeping positions, assessing how firm or soft the mattress feels. With input from multiple teammates and comparing the bed to other mattresses we’ve tested, we then come up with a ranking on the 1 to 10 scale.

After testing it out, I rated the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress as 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, meaning it is considerably firmer than average. Having previously tested the original DreamCloud mattress, I expected this bed to be fairly firm, since the original hybrid version is pretty firm. We rated that one as 7 out of 10, so the memory foam version is actually firmer. 

Laying on the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress, I did feel some initial plushness from the quilted cover, but I didn’t sink into the mattress at all and felt very lifted up and out of the structure. While the cover is somewhat plush, it doesn’t have much give or feel very pliant, resulting in a firmer than average bed despite being all-foam (which is usually associated with a softer feel).

Sleeping Position and Body Weight

Now let’s talk about how sleepers of different weights might feel in each sleeping position on the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress.

We recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body types. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body types, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 250 pounds).

As a general rule, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average weight sleepers and tend to sink into the mattress more.

As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.

Here’s my take on how different sleepers might feel on the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress.

Is the DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?

• Light Back Sleepers –  Light back sleepers find the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress works well for them, but I would note that it may feel even firmer to these folks than it did to me (I fall in the average weight group), since they won’t sink into the material as much. This bed can provide plenty of spinal support for light back sleepers, but it may be too firm for some people’s taste.
• Light Side Sleepers – The DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress is far too firm for most light side sleepers. They won’t receive enough cushioning on key pressure points, like the shoulders and hips, because this bed doesn’t allow for much sinkage or cradling.
• Light Stomach Sleepers – This bed is a great match for light stomach sleepers. Because it is firm and doesn’t have much give, light stomach sleepers should feel well-supported and are unlikely to find their hips sinking into the foam layers.

Is the DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130–250 pounds)?

• Average Weight Back Sleepers – I think the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress is a great fit for average weight back sleepers. The firmer feel works well to provide sturdy support, while the quilted cover provides a little bit of plushness. This is an especially good pick for back sleepers who like a firmer feel.
• Average Weight Side Sleepers – I don’t think the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress is a good choice for average weight side sleepers. I found it too firm and not contouring enough for pressure relief around my shoulders and hips, so I think most average weight side sleepers will experience pressure buildup on this bed.
• Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress should work well for average weight stomach sleepers. The firmness of the bed works well to keep the hips from sinking in, which promotes a neutral spine.

Is the DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?

• Heavy Back Sleepers – I think the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress could be a decent option for heavy back sleepers, as it has a firm feel that can keep the spine neutral. I will note that we prefer to recommend mattresses with coils to heavy sleepers, but if you’re looking for an all-foam bed, this one could be a good option.
• Heavy Side Sleepers – I think the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress will likely be too firm for heavy side sleepers. While they may sink into the material more than I did, heavy side sleepers may sink through the comfort layer and “bottom out” on the firmer support foam, leading to pressure buildup anyway.
• Heavy Stomach Sleepers – The DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress isn’t a great fit for heavy stomach sleepers. They may find their hips sinking into the material more than light or average stomach sleepers, leading to their spine being out of alignment.

DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress Performance

In addition to assessing how each mattress feels, we like to run the beds we review through a series of tests on performance factors like pressure relief, motion isolation, responsiveness, edge support, and cooling. These factors can be important in determining how the mattress will work for you and your lifestyle.

DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress Pain Relief Performance

Pressure relief is an important part of a mattress for many different sleepers. Particularly in the side and back sleeping positions, you don’t want to experience pressure buildup in key points like the shoulders, hips, or low back. Pressure relief can also be very important for sleepers who have joint pain or other types of chronic pain, as having a mattress that relieves pressure can make sleeping more comfortable.

We test how pressure-relieving a mattress is with a heat-mapping pressure mat. We lay the mat on top of a mattress, then lay on the mat in different sleeping positions to see where pressure builds up. The mat uses thermal imaging to generate a color-coded map, where blue and green indicate low pressure and yellow and red indicate high pressure.

Looking at the results for back sleeping, I found the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress works well for pressure relief in this position. There is little to no pressure buildup showing on the heat map, which is a great result. For side sleeping, there is some noticeable pressure buildup. This isn’t quite as good and reflects the pressure I felt building up on my body when I was laying on my side.

Motion Transfer

If you sleep with a partner or pet, then motion transfer is a test you’ll want to pay attention to. Motion transfer is a measure of how much movement transfers across a mattress. For example, if your partner is tossing and turning on their side and you can feel waves of movement under you, then your mattress likely has high motion transfer.

We come up with our motion transfer score using a few different tests. The first one is simple: we just lie down on the mattress with a colleague, roll around, and see how much of each other’s movement we feel. We also place a full wine glass on the mattress, and see how much the wine moves around with us. If the liquid has zero to little movement, then it’s a safe bet that the mattress has low motion transfer, which is what you want to see.

Finally, there’s our seismometer test. This involves dropping a 10 pound steel ball from heights of four inches, eight inches and 12 inches, then measuring the disturbance it causes: the bigger the lines on the graph, the bigger the disturbance and the higher the motion transfer.

Overall, we saw pretty low motion transfer in all three of our tests. For the first test, I had my colleague Nichole lay on the bed, while I moved around on the other side. She felt some of the larger movements, like bouncing or aggressively turning, but overall she didn’t feel much disturbance. 

Our seismograph test showed similarly low motion transfer, as you can see above. All in all, I think couples may feel some larger movements, but should be largely undisturbed by each other’s motion on the DreamCloud Memory Foam.

Responsiveness

Responsiveness is a measure of how quickly a mattress responds to pressure, which correlates to how easy or difficult it is to move around on the mattress. A responsive mattress can be beneficial for combination sleepers who change between sleeping positions, for people with mobility issues, and for sex.

I tested the DreamCloud Memory Foam’s responsiveness by moving around on the mattress and changing between sleeping positions, assessing how much effort it took to do so. Moving on this bed was pretty easy for me — it’s not a super bouncy mattress, but because the surface is firm and doesn’t allow you to sink in, you don’t need to use much effort to change between sleeping positions on the bed. I’d say the DreamCloud Memory Foam is a responsive mattress.

Cooling

A mattress that stays cool throughout the night can be beneficial for many different people, such as hot sleepers, those who live in warm climates, or couples (since two bodies produce more heat than one). To see how well a bed stays cool, we first look at the materials used in its construction.

The DreamCloud Memory Foam is an all-foam bed, which is generally the worst bed type at staying cool, because foam traps heat. However, it does have a breathable cashmere blend cover and it does use gel-infused memory foam, which is intended to draw heat away from the body. Just looking at the materials, I expected the DreamCloud Memory foam to be just decent for cooling.

We also test out each mattress with a device called a thermal gun, which uses color-coded imaging to measure how much and how quickly a mattress heats up when we lie down on it. If it heats up more than 15 degrees Fahrenheit, we consider it to have poor cooling capabilities. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling.

With our thermal gun test, I was surprised to see how well the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress stays cool. After a tester laid on the bed for five minutes, it only increased in temperature by about 7 degrees, which qualifies as good cooling on our scale. 

I definitely didn’t expect this from an all-foam mattress — the gel memory foam must be serving its purpose well here. Additionally, I think having a firmer bed that doesn’t conform around the sleeper as much could help with reducing the heat, since foam tends to trap heat as it contours around the body.

Edge Support

Edge support refers to how well the perimeter of the mattress bears weight. Ideally, you want to feel as supported along the edge as you do in the middle of the bed, rather than having the edges sag under your weight.

I first tested the DreamCloud Memory Foam’s edge support by sitting on the edge. I was amazed to see that there was almost no sinkage on the edge and I felt completely supported — often with all-foam beds, the edges can sink quite a bit. However, I think the firmness of the foam is working well here to prevent that sinkage from happening.

Then I moved to lay along the edge of the bed and here I felt completely supported. There was essentially no visible sinkage. My colleague Nichole even noted that she was able to lay halfway off the bed and still feel supported, when she tested out the edge support.

Overall, these are really impressive results from the edge support test. If you like to sleep close to the edge or use the edge to get out of the bed, you should find the DreamCloud Memory Foam works well.

DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress Performance For Couples

When deciding if a mattress is good for couples, we look at four performance factors: motion isolation, responsiveness, cooling, and edge support. Based on the DreamCloud Memory Foam’s performance in these tests, I would say it is a good mattress for couples.

The DreamCloud Memory Foam showed low motion transfer, meaning couples shouldn’t be disturbed by each other tossing and turning at night. It is responsive, meaning it should be easy to move around on for sex. It tested well for cooling, meaning it should help counteract the heat of two bodies. And it tested excellently for edge support, which allows couples to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress without feeling like they might slip off the edge.

My Final Thoughts about the DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress

That’s all for my testing on the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress! Let’s recap everything I covered in this review with my final recommendations of who should and shouldn’t consider buying this mattress.

Who I Recommend the DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress For

• Back sleepers should find a lot to love in the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress. It’s supportive and sturdy, but still offers some comfort from the quilted cover.
• Many stomach sleepers should also enjoy how the firm foams in this bed keep their hips propped up for spinal alignment.
• Couples should like this bed too, as it scored well in our motion isolation test, it is responsive for sex, it sleeps cool, and it has excellent edge support.
• Hot sleepers looking for an all-foam bed should consider the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress, as it performed quite well in our thermal gun cooling test.

Who I Don’t Recommend the DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress For

• Most side sleepers will likely find the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress to be too firm. I don’t think it provides enough pressure relief for these sleepers’ shoulders and hips. See our best mattresses for side sleepers for better options.

The Nectar is an all-foam mattress with a soft, cushioning feel. When we tested it, we rated its firmness as 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, meaning it’s just softer than average.

• Price: The Nectar mattress is less expensive than the DreamCloud Memory Foam, by about $400 for a queen size.
• Sleeping position: With a softer and more contouring feel, the Nectar is a great fit for side sleepers. It can also work well for some back sleepers.

DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress vs Bear Mattress

The Bear is an all-foam mattress. It was originally designed with muscle recovery for athletes in mind. When shopping, customers can select to add a Celliant cover, which is a material that we found to be cooling. Bear claims can promote muscle recovery. While we can’t verify that claim, we did test the Bear mattress and found it to have a fairly firm feel — we rated it as 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

• Price: The Bear mattress is less expensive than the DreamCloud Memory Foam, by about $500 for a queen size.
• Sleeping position: Like the DreamCloud, the Bear is a good choice for back sleepers because of its firmer feel. However, we didn’t think it was quite firm and supportive enough for most stomach sleepers (unlike the DreamCloud Memory Foam).
• Cooling: With the Celliant cover, the Bear mattress stays fairly cool for an all-foam mattress.
• Body weight: We don’t recommend the Bear mattress for heavy sleepers, who weigh 250 pounds or more.

DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress vs Layla Mattress

The Layla mattress is another memory foam mattress, but with a twist — it’s flippable. The Layla has a Soft side and a Firm side. To change between the two, all you have to do is flip it over. We rated the Soft side of the Layla 5.5 out of 10, while we rated the Firm side 7.5 out of 10. 

• Price: The Layla mattress is less expensive than the DreamCloud Memory Foam, by about $400 for a queen size.
• Sleeping position: Being flippable and having two firmnesses, the Layla can work for all three sleeping positions (depending on the side you choose). The Soft side works well for side sleepers, while the Firm side works for stomach sleepers. Back sleepers could be happy on either side.
• Cooling: The Layla mattress sleeps decently cool for an all-foam bed. Like the DreamCloud Memory Foam, it uses some infusions in its foam to promote cooling.
• Body weight: We don’t recommend the Layla mattress for heavy sleepers, who weigh 250 pounds or  more.

DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress vs DreamCloud Premier Memory Foam Mattress

The DreamCloud Premier Memory Foam mattress is the middle-range mattress in the DreamCloud memory foam line. It is similar to the DreamCloud Memory Foam, but we found it to be slightly less firm — we rated it as a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

• Price: The DreamCloud Premier Memory Foam is slightly more expensive than the DreamCloud Memory Foam.
• Sleeping position: Both of these mattresses are excellent for back sleepers. We also thought the DreamCloud Premier Memory Foam could work for some stomach sleepers.
• Cooling: Oddly, the DreamCloud Premier Memory Foam didn’t test as well for cooling as the DreamCloud Memory Foam did in our thermal gun cooling test — it increased in temperature by about 13.5 degrees.
• Body weight: Both of these beds could work well for heavy sleepers, but a hybrid or innerspring mattress may be a better choice, as the coils will provide additional support.

This bed has a pillow top, for added plushness and comfort, as well as layers of memory foam and coils for support. In testing, we found the DreamCloud Premier Rest Hybrid had a medium-firm feel — we rated it as a 6.5 out of 10.

• Price: The DreamCloud Premier Rest Hybrid is about $1,000 more expensive than the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress, for a queen size.
• Sleeping position: With its plush pillow top and medium-firm feel, the DreamCloud Premier Rest Hybrid is well-suited for back and side sleepers.
• Cooling: The DreamCloud Premier Rest Hybrid sleeps cool, thanks to a breathable coil layer and gel-infused memory foam.
• Body weight: Because the base layer is made of supportive coils, the DreamCloud Premier Rest is a better choice for heavy sleepers than the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress.
