It’s one of the fanciest beds we’ve tested, but I want to help you decide if it’s the right one for you. Is the Ghost SmartBed a Good Mattress for You?
First up, let’s talk about who I do and don’t recommend the Ghost SmartBed for.
Who I recommend the Ghost SmartBed Mattress for
- High-tech lovers should definitely enjoy this mattress. I was impressed with how well it formed and adjusted to my body and sleeping position as needed. You can see how your body’s pressure points are reacting to the mattress on the app and you can control its pressure and firmness to your liking.
- People who like tracking their sleep health (and improving it) should also like this smart bed. The GhostBed app tracks your sleep patterns and stats for you that you can review in real-time or the morning after to make improvements.
- As a hot sleeper, I really like the cooling properties in this bed. The cover and gel foams inside should really help prevent any overheating.
Who I don’t recommend the Ghost SmartBed Mattress for
- If you’re not tech-savvy or a fan of all the bells and whistles, this might not be the best option for you. This is far from a traditional mattress with how it operates. Full disclosure, it was a little time-consuming for me to get the app working and the bed set up. You use technology to control a lot of the bed’s features as well. However, GhostBed does have tutorial videos for anyone struggling. You can also pay more for white glove delivery, which includes having someone set it up for you.
- Those who like to sleep in complete silence may find this bed too noisy when it’s on the automatic setting. You can hear the air inflating and deflating as it adjusts. There is an option to manually set it to a preference you want though, so it will stay in one setting and won’t adjust through the night.
- Being a high-tech smart bed, this mattress is quite expensive and may not be the best bed for budget shoppers. I’d recommend budget shoppers look at our list of the best affordable mattresses.
How Firm is the Ghost SmartBed Mattress?
Typically, we rate beds on a firmness scale of 1 to 10, with 6.5 being the standard for medium-firm. However, this GhostBed is far from typical- it’s an adjustable bed. Users have the option to adjust the firmness levels on the bed from plush to firm — or anything in between.
The overall feel of the mattress is not adjustable, though. It has a doughy, cool, and cushiony feel on top thanks to its upper foam layers.

Now let’s go over a few performance factors, including support in different sleeping positions, pain relief, and performance for couples. See below how the Ghost SmartBed does in these categories.
Ghost SmartBed Mattress Pain Relief Performance
A mattress with strong pressure relief can help alleviate aches and stiffness. When looking at the Ghost SmartBed app, you’ll see a picture outline of the bed at the top of the screen. It has different colors that will show up as you lay on it, reflecting the different levels of pressure your body is feeling.
Greens and blues show low pressure, reds and oranges show high pressure. It’s recommended to adjust your settings until you see low pressure across the board. There are five ergonomically designed zones on your body where you can move the pressure setting higher or lower to make it the right fit for you.
Testing the Ghost SmartBed Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions
A bed will perform differently for sleepers based on their sleep position and body type. Your sleeping position should be the main factor you’re keeping in mind when looking for a mattress, but different body weights also need different amounts of pressure point relief and support.
GhostBed says the SmartBed can support up to 750 pounds, so most sleepers and couples should be able to rest comfortably on it. The Ghost SmartBed adjusts its pressure settings to the sleeper’s body type and sleeping position.
You have the option to allow the bed to adjust automatically as you change positions and move around, or you can do the manual mode and customize it a certain way. Again, there are five points on your body you can adjust pressure for from your head to your feet on the app. If you do the manual mode, be sure to focus on the following:
Back Sleeping
- Back sleepers will want to make sure their hips are sinking in a little to keep their spine in alignment and that there’s low pressure across their entire back. You can check the pressure amount on the app to see if it’s at a healthy level.
Side Sleeping

Side sleepers will want to make sure they’re getting sinkage and contouring around their hip and shoulder. Look for low pressure results on both those pressure point areas to ensure comfortable sleep and no pains in the morning.
Stomach Sleeping
- It’s not really about pressure for stomach sleepers. Rather, it’s about spinal alignment. These sleepers should focus on keeping the bed as firm as possible and adjusting it so their hips are elevated enough to keep their spine in alignment.
Ghost SmartBed Mattress Performance for Couples
If you sleep with a partner, you’re going to want to keep other factors in mind that might not matter for those who sleep alone. For example, you’ll want to know how well your mattress absorbs motion, whether or not it’s good for sex, if it has strong and sturdy edges, and if it will keep you both cool. Take a look at how the Ghost SmartBed stacks up in these categories below.
Individual Settings
The Ghost SmartBed has sensors throughout the mattress and you can actually choose “your side” of the bed. Once you select the side you sleep on, you can control the settings for that side and your partner can do the same with the other side. This allows you both to have your own personalized settings of pressure relief and firmness.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is a measure of how much movement you’ll likely detect from one side of the bed to the other. If you sleep with a partner who tends to toss and turn throughout the night, you’ll want a bed that doesn’t transfer a lot of movement, or has good motion isolation, so you can sleep soundly.
Due to the thick layers of foam on top of the SmartBed, I’d say you’re unlikely to feel disturbed by a partner tossing and turning, but will likely feel them getting in and out of bed.
Sex
The best mattress for sex is going to be both responsive and bouncy, so you and your partner can move around easily. I’d say the Ghost SmartBed is an ok mattress for sex. It isn’t a particularly bouncy bed and you are going to feel more “in” this bed than “on top” of it. If you’re looking for a mattress that’s bouncier, I’d recommend an innerspring mattress.
Cooling
The best cooling mattresses will keep the sleeper cool all night long. The Ghost SmartBed is a great choice for cooling. From its cooling cover to its gel polymer layer to its cooling gel, it’s built to prevent sleepers from overheating. I’ll dive into its materials more soon. Note that using a mattress topper may affect its ability to cool you.
Edge Support
Edge support is a measure of how well the perimeter of a bed can support weight. It will show whether you can sit on the bed to tie your shoes or sleep all the way on the edge of the bed without feeling like you’re going to fall off. Edge support can also be a good measure of a mattress’ durability and whether it may sag over time.
I’d say the Ghost SmartBed has average edge support.
What is the Ghost SmartBed Mattress Made Of?
To give you an even more in-depth look at this 12” smart mattress I’m going to take a look at each of its layers.
Cover – The top layer of the SmartBed is a ghost ice cooling cover, which is cool to the touch and found in other GhostBed mattresses.
Cooling Layer – Below that is the patented 3D Matrix polymer layer – this reacts to your body weight and draws heat away from you instead of trapping it inside the bed.
Comfort Layer – Then there’s a 2” layer of gel memory foam. This layer allows for pressure relief and sinkage into the bed.
Transition Layer – Below that is 2” of soft transition foam to provide extra cushioning.
Smart Layer – Beneath that are the smart sensors. These sense where pressure’s building across your body and then show you the results on your smartphone. Again, these sensors are on both sides of the bed, so you and your partner can both make adjustments to meet your individual needs.
Adjustable Layer – Next up are the medical-grade adjustable air chambers. These communicate with the sensors and your app, and inflate or deflate based on your individual needs.
Base Layer – The final layer is a 2” high-density support core layer. This keeps everything in place and adds to the overall durability of the mattress.

Ghost SmartBed Mattress Unboxing, Off-Gassing, and Setup
Like other online mattresses or bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Ghost SmartBed has a 24-48 hour off-gassing period. During this time, your mattress will fully decompress and release any trapped gasses in its foams. This may cause your mattress to release a slight odor, but it’s nothing to be concerned about. If you’re worried about the smell, place your new mattress in a well-ventilated room and avoid adding sheets for a day or so.
Unlike most other mattresses, the Ghost SmartBed has its own wifi pump and cables that require setting up. The mattress will ship in two or three boxes depending on the size. One box will contain that wifi pump. The other box(es) will have the mattress.
Here are the other parts it comes with:
- Four labeled hoses connected to the mattress. These plug into matching labeled connectors in the pump.
- A USB cable connected to the mattress that you plug into the pump.
- A power cord that you plug into the pump and the wall.
- The GhostBed app that needs to be downloaded on your phone or tablet. Once you download this app, you can identify your mattress from the label on its wifi pump and connect the app to your bed. If you and your partner are sharing the bed, you can each choose what side of the bed you want to operate in the app.
After getting this all set up, it takes 30 minutes for the bed to inflate before you can initially operate it.
My Final Thoughts about the Ghost SmartBed Mattress
We’ve made it through my Ghost SmartBed mattress review! Now that we’ve looked at this mattress from all angles, I want to give a quick summary of my favorite (and not so favorite) components of the SmartBed.
My favorite things about the Ghost SmartBed mattress
I like how this bed was built with every sleeper in mind and it can be customized to your liking. I also appreciate how there’s an automatic setting along with the manual setting, so you can decide to adjust it yourself or leave it in the hands of the SmartBed. You can also sign up for an account with NightVision within your GhostBed app to track your health data. This is great for anyone looking to improve their sleep patterns.
I also enjoy how comfortable and soft the top layers of this mattress are. Despite having foams inside, it sleeps very cool too – which is great for hot sleepers out there.
My Ghost SmartBed mattress complaints
This is far from a traditional mattress. It has several high-tech features that require you to operate. You can leave the bed in your ideal setting and don’t have to worry about regularly adjusting it, but I do think most people who get this bed will want to be willing to embrace its futuristic characteristics.
Although a smart bed with a lot of internal health tracking, this bed does run on the expensive side. I think those shopping on a tight budget may want to consider a bed in our roundup of the best budget mattresses instead. There’s another great (and more basic) GhostBed model in there too.
If you’re looking for an innerspring feel, this also might not be the best option for you.

What is the sleep trial period, returns, and warranty information for the Ghost SmartBed mattress?
The Ghost SmartBed ships free to your door in two or three boxes (depending on the mattress size). A twin xl ships in two boxes, while a split king will ship in three. The SmartBed comes with a 101-night sleep trial period. If you don’t like it, you can return it for free within that period. But if you do like it, you have a 25 year warranty.
Where is the Ghost SmartBed made?
It’s made in the United States and Canada.
Can the Ghost SmartBed fit on a bed frame or foundation?
Yes – it can go on an adjustable base, bed frame, or box spring. It just needs a solid surface to sit on. GhostBed sells them too if you want to buy everything together.
Do I have to use the SmartBed’s WiFi?
No, you can use your home network instead if you prefer.
What happens if the power goes out?
If you lose power, the bed will lose its ability to adjust and will stay in the firmness and position setting you had it in before the power went out. It won't deflate. That being said, GhostBed recommends using a surge protector.
