We knew we had to test Glacier’s Summit Hybrid mattress to find out.

The Sleepopolis team has tested more than 330 mattresses over the years, ensuring that our readers find their perfect mattress match. Our efforts have helped 60,108 people purchase a mattress over the years, including 15,622 people in 2024 alone. The Glacier Summer came in at a 7 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, with enough support for back sleepers and stomach sleepers alike. You’ll likely feel more “on top” of this mattress than “in” it, making it easy to move around and switch positions.

What our tester says:

“In our testing, the Summit proved to be a relatively well-rounded mattress, earning a total score of 4.2 out of 5. Our testers gave it high marks in edge support, pressure relief, and response. This bed also has a balanced feel that should appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but we’ll dive further into the specifics below.” – Livvi DiCicco, staff writer and certified sleep science coach

Glacier Summit Hybrid Value

Most high-quality hybrid mattresses will cost you upwards of $1,000, and while they might be worth their weight in gold, spending that much isn’t always a feasible option. A mattress can be a decade-long or even lifelong investment, and while it might be tempting to choose the best budget option, you want to make sure that you’re receiving a good product. Thankfully, our testing team was relatively pleased with all that the Glacier Summit Hybrid had to offer.

This bed felt sturdy and durable, and it also performed well in a number of areas for a respectable overall score of 4.2 out of 5. To top it all off, it only comes in at $1,099 for a queen before any sales or coupons. If you’re worried about it holding up, you don’t have to just take our word for it: Glacier backs up this bed with a generous lifetime warranty. We’d call that great value overall.

What Is the Glacier Summit Hybrid Made Of?

The Glacier Summit mattress is a hybrid mattress, meaning it contains both foam and coils. It’s also fiberglass-free and constructed entirely in the U.S.

As a bed-in-a-box, the Glacier Summit Hybrid will arrive at your door compressed for delivery. Our in-house tester was able to unbox this mattress on her own, though she noted the box and mattress were very heavy. It didn’t take too long to inflate to its full size, but it did have a noticeable off-gassing smell. This is the chemical or plastic-like smell that occurs when you order something fresh from a factory. It will take a few hours to dissipate, so that may prevent you from using your mattress right away.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s inside this hybrid mattress.

Cover – The cover features the brand’s proprietary GlacierTECH cover, which is made of cooling fibers. The pillow top is constructed to keep air flowing through the mattress and has firmer quilting in the center for targeted support in the lumbar area. There’s also a rectangular slab of graphite-infused memory foam that goes across the middle of the mattress, further helping to disperse excess heat and providing contouring for this area.

Comfort Layers – The first full memory foam layer is made up of gel-infused memory foam, thick and dense for pressure relief. Next up is another layer of pressure-relieving foam that’s ventilated to allow for even more airflow.

Support Layer – The innerspring unit of this mattress features individually wrapped coils, wrapped in fabric cylinders. This is so they move independently for pinpoint support and bounce. They’re thicker along the lengthwise edges to keep the perimeter of the mattress sturdy. Everything sits on a stable foam base.

Glacier Summit Hybrid Mattress Firmness

At Sleepopolis, we rate firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. The industry standard falls around 6.5/10, or medium-firm, as this versatile firmness can accommodate a range of sleeper types. The Glacier Summit Hybrid came in at just a touch firmer, 7/10 on our scale.

Casper 2020 Firmness 1

This slightly firmer feel, plus the hybrid design of this bed, gives it a balanced but more supportive profile. You’ll like it if you’re looking to feel “on top” of your mattress rather than sinking into it like you would with cushy memory foam. This also makes the mattress better suited to sleep positions that prioritize support, like back and stomach sleeping.

Glacier Summit Hybrid Mattress Performance

How did this firmness hold up in our studio? Well, we put this mattress to the test in cooling, pressure relief, and just about every other performance category you can think of to find out who will match with this mattress.

Glacier Summit Hybrid Pressure Relief Performance

You may have seen many mattress brands advertising pressure-relieving mattresses as the pinnacle of comfort. But what does pressure relief actually mean? Per our chief medical advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta, “A mattress that relieves pressure well will cushion or cradle pressure points rather than allowing them to dig uncomfortably into the mattress, which can cause discomfort or pain.” These “pressure points” can be areas like the hips, shoulders, lower back, or knees, depending on how you sleep.

Pressure relief is most important for folks who sleep on their back and side, so that’s why we test it mainly in these two positions. We place a specialized mat on the mattress surface, which uses thermal technology to map out which body parts dig into the mattress as a tester lies down on it. Green and blue means low pressure, while red and yellow means high pressure. The map also records the overall pressure distribution across the body. From these results, alongside any experiential input from the tester, we rate the overall pressure relief for each position.

Our lightweight tester Riley Otis completed most of the pressure map testing for this mattress. On her side, she felt “pretty comfortable due to the foam on top,” though she noted the mattress was on the firmer side. “I didn’t sink in too much, but I felt like my joints were gently pressing into the bed,” she said. Still, she didn’t feel any pressure building up, and in turn rated the pressure relief in this position at a 4.5 out of 5. She recommended this mattress for “side sleepers who prefer a firmer feel.”

On her back, Riley felt that this mattress was just as comfortable, if not more. “This bed is perfect for back sleeping,” she said. “There’s the perfect amount of cushioning to fill in the space at my lower back and provide additional lumbar support.” Riley also thought that the support in this position was top-notch, keeping her hips and shoulders comfortably aligned. This combination of contouring and support should help to stave off any back pain in this position. She rated pressure relief for back sleepers at a perfect 5 out of 5.

With an overall pressure relief score of 4.8 out of 5, this mattress should work well to cushion sensitive areas. However, sleepers who have pain concerns should be aware that they won’t feel “cradled,” as they would on a softer memory foam mattress.

Glacier Summit Hybrid Motion Isolation

Motion isolation refers to how well or poorly motion travels across the surface of a bed, which can disturb sleepers on the other side. If you sleep with a restless partner, you might want a mattress that excels in this area. And, as Dr. Dasgupta says, “Great motion isolation capability can also be a sign of a high-quality mattress with dense, durable foams.” Hybrid mattresses like the Glacier Summit aren’t always the best option for motion isolation, as their springs make the surface more responsive, which can amplify movement rather than stifle it.

To test motion isolation, we perform two different tests.

Ripple test: First, we place a container of water on the surface of the mattress. One of our testers moves around on the other side, switching positions and getting in and out of bed to mimic typical nightly movement. Our tester Kenny Timper performed this test, and he wasn’t surprised by the results.

“The more I moved around on this mattress, the more I could see the water rippling throughout the container,” he said. “It never looked like it was going to splash out of the container, but it was definitely picking up every movement I made.” He rated this test at a 3 out of 5.

Motion transfer test: The second test involves help from a fellow tester. One tester lays down blindfolded on the mattress while the other moves around on the opposite side. From here, they’ll note whether or not they feel the other’s movements verbally or with a thumbs up. When Kenny’s testing partner was rolling and switching positions, he wasn’t too disturbed. “When she was rolling around next to me and changing positions, I couldn’t really tell what she was doing and it wasn’t too disturbing,” he said. So if you have a partner who tosses and turns, you might be able to sleep through it.

“However, what hopes I had for Glacier left when I felt her get out of bed,” Kenny said. His fellow tester’s exit was enough to jostle the entire mattress. He wouldn’t recommend this mattress if you have a partner who gets out of bed frequently to use the restroom. With another 3 out of 5 score for this test, it cemented the Glacier Summit as an unfortunately average mattress for couples.

Glacier Summit Hybrid Responsiveness

Responsiveness is a close cousin to bounce, referring to how easy it is to move on top of the mattress surface. This is a great metric to have for combination sleepers, who oscillate between multiple positions, or sexually active folks. Hybrids generally perform well in this category.

Riley performed the switch test for this mattress, which involves moving around on the mattress and seeing how easy it is to change positions. “I felt ‘on’ the bed and it was very easy to roll from one position to the next,” she said. Riley did note that rolling from her back to stomach was the most difficult, as the squishier, dense foam on top impeded her movement. Still, she found the bed “overall pretty easy to move around on,” and gave it a 4 out of 5 score in this category.

Aside from this subjective metric, we also recorded a few more objective areas relating to response. First, we judged the response time by recording how long it took the surface of the mattress to spring back into place when bearing weight. After removing the weight from the Summit, the surface only took 0.6 seconds to bounce back. This is relatively quick, but not quite instant, and earned a 4 out of 5.

We also dropped a weighted ball from six feet above the mattress and measured how high it bounced. The average bounce height of all the mattresses we’ve tested falls around 15.8 inches. The Summit Hybrid had an impressive bounce height of 25 inches. This earned a perfect score.

Overall, this is a fairly bouncy bed. Feeling “stuck” in this mattress shouldn’t be an issue.

Glacier Summit Hybrid Cooling

With the name Glacier, you’d expect this to be a truly cooling mattress. It’s a hybrid mattress, which should allow for airflow between the coils, and features multiple layers of both gel-infused and breathable foams. Despite all these cooling features, you may have noticed that this bed only scored a 3 out of 5 in this category, which is only average cooling performance. Here’s how we determined our score.

Cover test: Before beginning our other cooling tests, our expert tester felt around on the surface of the bed to find out how it felt. “It has a really slick top and feels ice-cold,” she said. This makes sense as the mattress is swaddled in a cooling cover. But how did this hold up in our thermal gun test?

Thermal gun test: In this test, we record the surface temperature of the mattress in two instances: first, before we start any testing, and then again after lying on it for about five minutes. The increase in temperature helps to inform us of how much the bed retains heat. A sign of good temperature regulation would be an increase of around 6 or 7 degrees.

The initial temperature for the Glacier Summit Hybrid came in at 69.2, and after five minutes, it had risen to 79.8 degrees. This is a 10.6-degree increase, which is a bit below average.

Feel test: Our tester claimed that this mattress “performs just like most other beds,” so don’t expect Arctic-level cooling. She could feel the mattress heating up beneath her as she lay there, so she wasn’t too surprised by the results of the temperature gun test.

Glacier Summit Hybrid Edge Support

A mattress with solid edge support will have a perimeter that remains stable when bearing weight. This is important if you need to sit or lay down at the very edge of the mattress for tying your shoe or plugging in your phone. Some older adults and folks with mobility concerns may also rely on edge support to help with getting in and out of bed.

We test edge support in two ways (both of which were performed by Kenny). First, we sit on the edge of the mattress and get in and out to judge how supportive it feels. “I was able to sit down on the mattress without sinking much and I could stand up without using my hands to bear down on the mattress,” Kenny said. He tried to get the edge to buckle or sink, but found it “barely budged.” He thought this was a sign that it’d be good for those with mobility concerns.

We also lie down on the edge of the bed, switching between positions to see if any of them cause more sinking than expected. Kenny didn’t encounter any issues in this test, either. “I was able to switch between different positions without feeling like I was going to fall off,” he said. There wasn’t any sinking or sloping to be found.

Kenny’s findings resulted in a perfect edge support score. “If you tend to gravitate toward the edge of the mattress or just want a bed where you can use the entire surface area, the Glacier is a great pick,” he finished.

Glacier Summit Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples

Couples may be interested in a variety of performance areas depending on their individual needs. Most important is motion isolation, especially if you’re a light sleeper like me, and someone breathing wrong on the other side of the bed can wake you up. Unfortunately, this area for the Summit was lacking, earning a score of 3 out of 5. As our tester Kenny mentioned, you could feel quite a bit of movement, especially getting in and out of bed.

Sharing the bed can also get a bit hot, so some couples might be interested in cooling. There’s not much to write home about here, either, as the bed performed just average in this area (3 out of 5). It should be enough to keep things from overheating, but hot sleepers who share the bed might want a cooler mattress that better lives up to the Glacier name.

However, the bed did well in other categories that might appeal to co-sleepers. If you like to spread out rather than cuddle up, you can make full use of the bed’s surface area with its strong edges. Kenny didn’t encounter any issues lying down at the edge, regardless of what position he tried, and gave this category a perfect score.

If you and your partner are sexually active, you should also benefit from this hybrid’s relatively bouncy surface, which earned a 4 out of 5 for response. More on this below.

Other Performance Factors to Consider

Aside from the testing parameters outlined above, there are some other lesser-considered areas that might factor into your decision when purchasing a new mattress.

Base Compatibility

If a mattress is listed as adjustable-base compatible, we’ll put it to the test with one of the many we have in our studio. The Glacier Summit Hybrid was one such bed, but we encountered some minor issues when putting the base into practice. Our testers found that the bed didn’t want to mold as nicely as we wanted, and if not for the bar at the front edge, it probably would’ve slipped right off. We always recommend using an adjustable base once everyone is in bed, as more weight will ensure the mattress better conforms to the bed frame.

A Glacier Summit Hybrid Mattress on an adjustable platform bed
A Glacier Summit Hybrid Mattress on an adjustable platform bed.

Noise

This mattress doesn’t make any noise when lying flat on a regular old frame — no squeak or squeal to be heard from the springs. On the adjustable base, however, we could hear it creaking as it folded up, but this is fairly common. I think that most sleepers won’t be awakened by any noises this mattress makes in the night.

Sex

The best mattress for sex will excel in three primary categories: response (for easy repositioning), edge support (to make full use of the surface area), and noise (to stay discreet and not distract from the main event). In fact, to find a mattress’s sex score, we take these three categories and average them together. The Glacier Summit Hybrid performed rather well in each of these categories, earning an overall score of 4.3 out of 5. All in all, it should be a great mattress for sex.

Durability

Our chief medical advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta describes a durable mattress as such: “It should be made of high-quality materials, including a strong support core, and excel in areas like edge support with minimal sagging.” The Glacier Summit earned a perfect score in the edge support category, and all of our testers thought this mattress was generally of a good quality and likely to maintain its quality with repeated use.

If you’re worried about this mattress showing signs of wear and tear too soon, it’s backed by the brand’s lifetime warranty. This warranty ensures that Glacier will fully replace or repair your mattress within the first 10 years of use — and at a prorated rate later down the line.

Glacier Summit Hybrid Sleeping Position and Body Weight

Whether a mattress works for you will depend not just on your preferred sleeping position, but also your body type. Sleepers over 230 pounds tend to find mattresses softer than expected, whereas sleepers less than 130 pounds may find them firmer. This is why we gather a diverse group of testers representing each weight category to have a lie-down on our mattresses, so we can determine who will feel comfortably supported.

Before we dive into our recommendations, though, we want to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 230 pounds).

As a general takeaway, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average-weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average-weight sleepers and sink into the mattress more. As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers likely need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.

Is the Glacier Summit Hybrid a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?

  • Light Back Sleepers – Our lightweight tester Riley Otis really enjoyed this mattress on her back, giving it a perfect score for pressure relief. It should work great for folks wanting firmer support in this position.
  • Light Side Sleepers – While it may not offer as much contouring or sinking as an all-foam mattress, Riley also enjoyed this position but again underscored its firmer feel.
  • Light Stomach Sleepers These sleepers should feel nicely supported with little risk of their hips dipping and falling out of alignment with the rest of their spine.
Our tester stomach-sleeping on a Glacier Summit Hybrid Mattress
Our tester stomach-sleeping on a Glacier Summit Hybrid mattress.

Is the Glacier Summit Hybrid a Good Mattress for Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 pounds)?

  • Average-Weight Back Sleepers – Our average-weight tester Kenny thought this bed was a great choice for this sleeper category. He especially liked how he got pressure relief on his lower back in this position.
  • Average-Weight Side Sleepers – Like Riley, Kenny commented on a lack of deep contour, but he was comfortable on his side. He noted that some side sleepers with concerns like hip or shoulder pain may want a softer bed.
  • Average-Weight Stomach Sleepers – Kenny is a dedicated stomach sleeper and enjoyed the support and alignment he received in this position.

Is the Glacier Summit Hybrid a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 230 pounds)?

  • Heavy Back Sleepers – Back sleepers over 230 pounds should reap the benefits of this supportive mattress, and may find it softer than others as they sink more into the layers.
  • Heavy Side Sleepers – Some of the firmness our other testers noticed might be wiped out by a sleeper with a larger frame, which can be more comfortable for heavyweight side sleepers needing pressure relief. However, they likely still won’t get a contouring feel.
  • Heavy Stomach Sleepers – Some of these sleepers may need a firmer mattress, lest they risk sinking in too far and negatively affecting their spinal alignment.

My Final Thoughts About the Glacier Summit Hybrid Mattress

After reading all the details about how this bed feels and performed, you might still be at a loss as to whether it’s right for you. Based on the results my team gathered, here’s who should (and shouldn’t) try out the Glacier Summit Hybrid.

Who I Recommend the Glacier Summit Hybrid For

  • Back sleepers of all sizes – Our testers, regardless of which weight category they fell into, found this mattress comfortably supportive in the back-sleeping position.
  • Combination sleepers – This hybrid has enough bounce to make switching between positions relatively easy.
  • Fans of a lifted feel – You’ll feel like you’re “on top” of this mattress, rather than sinking into it, which should work if you prefer a more supportive bed.
  • Sexually active sleepers – The Summit performed well in the response, edge support, and noise categories, all of which should appeal to the sex-positive shopper.

Who I Don’t Recommend the Glacier Summit Hybrid For

  • Traditional memory foam fans – You won’t sink into this bed or feel “hugged” by the foam layers on top.
  • Couples – The motion isolation isn’t the greatest on this mattress, so some couples, especially if one of you is a light sleeper, might want something with denser, slow-moving foam.

Glacier Summit Hybrid Pricing and Sizing

Now that you’ve gotten a clear picture of what the Glacier Summit mattress is all about, you might be wondering about how much it costs. Price can be a deciding factor when it comes to purchasing a new mattress, and we always want to find you the best deals. Glacier Summit Hybrid Policies

Glacier mattresses are available in select retail stores, but the easiest way to take these beds for a spin is to buy them online and take advantage of the brand’s year-long sleep trial. Simply purchase a mattress from the site, and once it arrives at your door, your 365 days of testing begin. As a bonus, if you live in California, Glacier offers free mattress removal.

After 30 days, you have the option to return your mattress if you decide it’s not for you. For returns, Glacier will remove your mattress from your home for free (just note, if it’s damaged or dirty, they may charge a fee), after which point you should receive a full refund.

If you decide to keep your mattress, it’s then backed by the brand’s limited lifetime warranty. For the first 10 years of your mattress’s lifespan, if it shows any sign of defects, Glacier will replace your mattress for free. In the 11th year, there will be a 50-percent discount for a new mattress. After that, the discount decreases by 10-percent each year until it stabilizes at 10 percent. This is pretty generous when you consider the average warranty for a mattress is about 10 years.

Glacier Summit Hybrid vs. Competitor

You might be wondering how the Glacier Summit stack up to all the other mattresses out there. Here’s how it compares to some of our oft-recommended beds:

Glacier Summit Hybrid vs Saatva Classic

Like the Glacier Summit Hybrid, the Saatva Classic features a mix of foam and coils. However, the Saatva Classic has more of an innerspring feel, thanks to its two coil units, one of which is a traditional innerspring layer. The Saatva is another highly reviewed favorite of ours. It’s also the bed I happen to sleep on every night, so I know it better than any other mattress.

  • Price:  If you’ve got the cash and are looking for luxury quality and perks like white glove delivery, you might prefer the Saatva. A queen-size Saatva Classic will run you about $2,000 before sales or coupons, while the Glacier Summit falls a little over $1,000.
  • Sleeping position: Both of these mattresses should be great for back sleepers. Neither may offer much in the way of contouring, as they both have a more lifted feel. The Saatva is a bit bouncier and may be better suited for combination sleepers.
  • Cooling: Though the Saatva Classic isn’t outfitted with as many cooling features as the Glacier Summit, it still runs temperature-neutral. The Glacier may have a more initial cool-to-the-touch feel, but the Saatva actually performed better in our temperature tests.
  • Body weight: The Saatva mattress comes in multiple firmness levels, so sleepers can better tailor the bed to their needs and body type. The Glacier Summit Hybrid only comes in one option, which we found worked well for most of our testers, though it did have a firmer feel.

A popular budget choice for a hybrid mattress is DreamCloud. This hybrid also has a similar feel to the Glacier Summit Hybrid, prioritizing support rather than the uber-soft sink of memory foam. The DreamCloud Hybrid has a truer medium-firm feel, though, coming in at 6.5/10 on our firmness scale.

  • Price: The DreamCloud Hybrid is more affordable than the Glacier at $699 for a queen mattress. The Glacier costs significantly more at $1,099.
  • Sleeping position: Both of these beds should work for back sleepers, but side sleepers may fare better on the Glacier Summit because it has just a touch more sinkage for their hips and shoulders. The DreamCloud might be a tad too soft for stomach sleepers. Both have decent bounce for combination sleepers.
  • Cooling: The DreamCloud had the same initial cool, smooth feeling as the Glacier Summit, but it did warm up a bit. Still, it retained heat less than the Glacier did in our cooling test.
  • Body weight: We don’t recommend the DreamCloud for sleepers over 230 pounds. However, we think that the Glacier Summit should be able to support these sleepers, depending on their sleeping position.

I have purchased 5 different Dreamcloud mattresses over the years and never once disappointed. Always fast shipping. Fantastic pricing. But by far the best feature is the quality of the Dreamcloud mattress. Also very impressed with the free bedding (sheets) that came with my recent two purchases. Don’t change what you are doing/offering. It’s perfect in every way.

Other Models From Glacier

There are also other options available within the Glacier brand if you’re not sure the Summit is quite right for you.

Glacier Summit Hybrid vs Glacier Original Hybrid

Glacier’s Original Hybrid is the brand’s flagship hybrid mattress. The Summit might be considered the upgraded version of the Original; however, you might prefer the feel (and price) of this simpler model.

  • Price: The Original comes in at $799 for a queen, while the Summit will run you a bit more at $1,099 for the same size. If your final decision comes down to price point, the Original might be a better compromise.
  • Sleeping position: These hybrids both have a more lifted feel, but the Original is just a touch softer, coming in as a true medium-firm mattress (6.5/10 on our scale). Our testers enjoyed both these beds on their back, but side sleepers might prefer the slightly softer feel. Stomach sleepers might want to stick to the Summit’s somewhat firmer support.
  • Cooling: Both of these beds didn’t stun in the cooling category. They initially felt cool to the touch but warmed up after lying on them for a while. Still, the Original’s surface temperature rose slightly less than the Summit, so the latter may be the better choice for hot sleepers.
  • Body weight: Lightweight sleepers may prefer the Original’s medium-firm feel, while sleepers over 230 pounds might find more secure support on the Summit. Sleepers who fall somewhere in the middle should generally feel comfortable on either mattress.

Customer Experience
A combination of the warranty, trial period, and overall experience when unboxing this mattress.

The Glacier Original Hybrid is a true middle-of-the-road mattress, and we mean that as a compliment. Its balanced feel makes it comfortable for average-weight sleepers in all three sleeping positions, all while remaining cooling, supportive, and responsive.

What our tester says:

“During my testing, I was especially impressed by its responsive, medium-firm feel, which made it easy to move around and shift positions — an essential trait for restless or combination sleepers. Its cooling technology was another standout feature, offering exceptional temperature regulation from the moment I lay down.” – Kenny Timper, staff writer and certified sleep science coach

Our Review Process

At Sleepopolis, our team of certified sleep science coaches personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time lying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress.
