What Is the Sleepy’s Hybrid Mattress Made Of?
The Sleepy’s Hybrid is a 13-inch hybrid mattress with gel-infused memory foams and pocketed support springs. Let’s take a closer look at its construction.
Cover – The Sleepy’s Hybrid’s cover layer features a breathable stretch knit cover to help keep things cool at night. While I didn’t find this cover silky or cool to the touch during testing, I thought it was breathable and comfortable overall.
Comfort Layer – This bed’s comfort layer features 1 inch of gel-infused memory foam, 1 inch of soft comfort foam, and 2 inches of medium air-flow foam. Overall, the foams in this mattress do a great job of keeping you supported and lifted. I felt “on top” of the mattress the entire time.
Support Layer – The Sleepy’s Hybrid’s support system is an 8-inch layer of firm pocketed coils that provide extra edge support. I can vouch for this bed’s edge support; I barely felt any sinkage across the board when sitting and laying on the corners of the mattress.
Sleepy’s Hybrid Mattress Firmness
Before I talk about the firmness and feel of the Sleepy’s Hybrid mattress, it’s important to note that firmness is subjective. A mattress will feel firmer or softer to different sleepers depending on their body weight, shape, and preferred sleeping position.
To get a better understanding of how firm the Sleepy’s Hybrid mattress feels, I invited a colleague to try out the mattress and give it a firmness rating between 1 and 10. For reference, the industry standard is 6.5 out of 10, or medium-firm.
I felt supported and lifted when testing the Sleepy’s Hybrid. There was minimal sinkage around my lips, and I felt on top of the bed the entire time. Similarly, my colleague felt this bed was a true medium-firm mattress and noted that her body felt lifted while lying on it.
I gave this mattress a 6.5 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale, meaning it falls within the industry standard.

We recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 250 pounds).
As a general takeaway, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average weight sleepers and tend to sink into the mattress more.
As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.
Is the Sleepy’s Hybrid a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – This bed should work for lightweight back sleepers who prefer a firmer mattress. The Sleepy’s Hybrid should offer these sleepers plenty of support and pressure relief around their lower lumbar area.
- Light Side Sleepers – I would not recommend this mattress to lightweight side sleepers. This bed will likely feel too firm to them and wouldn’t give their hips and shoulders the extra cushioning they need.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – This mattress should work for light stomach sleepers who prefer a firmer mattress. This mattress should keep their spines elevated in a healthy position throughout the night.
Is the Sleepy’s Hybrid a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130–250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – This bed should work for most average weight back sleepers. These sleepers should feel ample support and pressure relief in their lower backs.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Sleepy’s Hybrid should be good for most average weight side sleepers. However, I recommend that sleepers with sensitive joints go with one of our best mattresses for side sleepers.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – As someone who falls into this category, I have no problem recommending this mattress to average stomach sleepers. This mattress kept my spine in a healthy position, which is essential for strict stomach sleepers.
Is the Sleepy’s Hybrid a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – The Sleepy’s Hybrid mattress is thick enough to support heavy back sleepers. These sleepers may sink in slightly, but it shouldn’t impact their support. I recommend this mattress to heavy back sleepers who prefer a softer bed.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – These sleepers should enjoy sleeping on the Sleepy’s Hybrid mattress, as they should get more sinkage and body contouring from the memory foam than other sleepers. However, heavier side sleepers with sensitive joints will likely need something softer.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I would not recommend this mattress to heavy stomach sleepers. These sleepers will likely sink too far into the bed, which could impact their spine’s alignment.
Sleepy’s Hybrid Mattress Performance
Okay, now that we have firmness and feel out of the way, let’s dig deeper into some of the other tests I performed on the Sleepy’s Hybrid mattress. I perform numerous tests on every mattress we review to help readers get an objective view of what sleeping on them every night is like.
Read on to see how the Sleepy’s Hybrid performs when it comes to motion transfer, cooling, and more.
Sleepy’s Hybrid Mattress Pain Relief Performance
A mattress’s pressure relief performance can tell you a lot about how it will impact pain relief on your body. Pressure relief is a bed’s ability to ease tension at pressure points at the hips, shoulders, and back.
Individuals suffering from shoulder or hip pain will want to find a mattress with good pressure relief. These mattresses offer a gentler feel around those sensitive pressure areas.
To test the Sleepy’s Hybrid’s pressure-relieving abilities, I performed a pressure map test. This test involves spreading a specialized mat across the mattress and lying on it in different sleeping positions.
The mat then uses thermal imaging to show how much pressure builds on my body. It changes from blue and green for low pressure (with blue signaling no pressure at all) to orange and red for high pressure (with red being the highest pressure). We cover three different areas: back pain, shoulder pain, and hip pain.
Based on the test results above, the Sleepy’s Hybrid mattress can be a game-changer for those with back pain, as the graphic is primarily blue. It’s also a solid choice for shoulder and hip pain, as the results show mostly blue and green around those areas.
While this is by no means a bad choice for side sleepers, folks who struggle with tension in these areas might want to look at our best mattresses for hip pain or best mattresses for shoulder pain instead.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer measures how much movement you will likely detect from one side of the bed to the other. If you sleep with a restless pet or have a partner who tends to switch between sleeping positions throughout the night, you’ll want a bed that can effectively trap motion. Prioritizing low motion transfer, or what we also call good motion isolation, can help you sleep soundly, no matter who’s moving around next to you.
Human Test
For the first motion isolation test, I lie on the mattress with a colleague, roll around a bit, and see if they can feel my movements on their side of the bed. We take turns moving around on the bed while the other lies still to estimate how much motion someone might detect while sleeping with a partner.
Since the Sleepy’s Hybrid is a more responsive bed, its motion isolation capabilities suffer a bit. When testing the motion transfer on this mattress, I could feel my colleague get in and out of bed, and her movements impacted my side of the mattress as she switched between different sleeping positions.
Water Test
Next, my colleague and I place a full glass of water on the mattress and see how much the liquid moves around with us. If the water has zero to little movement, it’s a safe bet that the mattress has low motion transfer, which is what you want to see.
During the water test, we saw a lot of movement in the glass. The water sloshed around as we took turns getting in and out of bed and switched between different sleeping positions. Based on these observations, I would not recommend this mattress to people with partners who wake up easily at night.
Seismometer Test
The last motion transfer test is our seismometer test. This test involves dropping a 10-pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches, then measuring the disturbance it causes. In this case, the bigger the lines on the graph, the bigger the disturbance and the higher the motion transfer.
In the case of the Sleepy’s Hybrid mattress, the graph shows a lot of motion at the impact site that spreads to the other side of the bed’s surface.
Responsiveness
Responsiveness refers to how quickly a mattress reverts to its original shape after applying pressure. Memory foam usually has a low response to pressure, while hybrid mattresses with coils tend to have a high response to pressure. Combination sleepers who frequently change positions in the middle of the night often prefer a responsive bed because it allows them to move around without much effort.
What the Sleepy’s Hybrid lacks in motion isolation, it more than makes up for in responsiveness. When trying out this bed for myself, I never felt “stuck” and had no trouble rolling around. In other words, this bed is a slam dunk for combination sleepers. Combination sleepers should have no issues changing between different sleeping positions throughout the night.
Cooling
Many factors determine how cool a mattress stays when you sleep on it. The materials inside the mattress largely contribute to whether it traps heat or releases it. Most memory foam beds are notorious for trapping heat. However, the Sleepy’s Hybrid’s gel infusions and pocketed coils help it stay breathable and airy.
I tested the Sleepy’s Hybrid with a thermal gun, a device that uses color-coded imaging to measure how much and how quickly a mattress heats up when someone lies down on it.
If it heats more than 15 degrees Fahrenheit, I consider it to have poor cooling capabilities. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling.
After taking turns laying on the Sleepy’s Hybrid with my colleague, I saw the temperature only go up about 7 degrees, meaning it should keep most sleepers cool at night.
Edge Support
I also tested the edge support on the Sleepy’s Hybrid. Edge support determines if you can sleep on the edge of the bed without feeling the side of the mattress collapsing under your weight. It can also help you assess its durability and whether it may sag over time.
I noticed the most sinkage on the Sleepy’s Hybrid while sitting on the corners of the bed. However, it was a very small amount. The edge was even better; I didn’t notice much sinkage and felt supported and comfortable the entire time I was sitting and laying on it.
When I measured the sinkage with a yardstick, the layers sank only 3 inches when applying weight to the edge.
The Sleepy’s Hybrid’s edge support is near perfect. I would recommend this bed to couples who use the entire surface area of the mattress and sleepers with mobility issues that need help getting in and out of bed.
Sleepy’s Hybrid Mattress Performance For Couples
I think the Sleepy’s Hybrid is a great option for couples. This bed’s gel-infused foams and pocketed coils should keep most couples from overheating at night. This mattress is also responsive enough for combination sleepers or couples who move around frequently at night.
The only area the Sleepy’s Hybrid falters in for couples is motion isolation. Folks with partners who wake up easily will want to steer clear of this mattress and go for one of our best memory foam mattresses.

Like the Sleepy’s Hybrid, the Saatva is a responsive mattress with great edge support. However, the Saatva is a true innerspring bed with two layers of premium coils. Both models are a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
- Price: Generally speaking, the Saatva is a pricier bed at $1,795 for a queen-sized mattress. The pricing on the Sleepy’s Hybrid will depend on what retailer you go to.

The DreamCloud is a luxury hybrid mattress that balances pressure relief and support. This mattress is significantly firmer than the Sleepy’s Hybrid, coming in at a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
- Price: A queen-sized DreamCloud mattress starts at $1,332. The pricing on the Sleepy’s Hybrid will depend on what Mattress Firm you go to.
- Sleeping position: Both mattresses should offer plenty of support and pressure relief to back sleepers. Stomach sleepers should enjoy both mattresses, as both beds offer enough support to keep their hips lifted and spines in alignment. I would not recommend either bed to strict side sleepers or folks with sensitive joints.
- Cooling: Both mattresses performed similarly for cooling, likely because they have gel-infused memory foam and a support layer with pocketed coils.
- Body weight: Most average-weight and light sleepers should have no trouble sleeping on either mattress. Heavier sleepers, on the other hand, might prefer the DreamCloud, as it is a little firmer than the Sleepy’s Hybrid.

- Price: A queen-sized Helix Midnight mattress starts at $1,373.80. The pricing on the Sleepy’s Hybrid will depend on what Mattress Firm you go to.
- Sleeping position: Both mattresses are great options for back sleepers and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers might prefer the Helix Midnight as it did better on the pressure map test than the Sleepy’s mattress. However, I still wouldn’t recommend either mattress to those with sensitive joints.
- Cooling: The Helix Midnight outperformed the Sleepy’s Hybrid in cooling. The Helix Midnight’s temperature only increased about 5 degrees. You can also get a GlacioTex cooling cover with the Helix mattress at an additional cost if you sleep extra hot.
- Body weight: Although neither bed is the best choice for heavy sleepers, heavy back sleepers might be comfortable on the Sleepy’s Hybrid mattress.

At Sleepopolis, our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches personally test each mattress.
