SpineAlign Luxury Hybrid Mattress Review

If nothing else, today’s bed certainly has a straightforward name. Dr. Jason Loth got straight to the point with the SpineAlign Luxury Hybrid, a mattress that promotes, well, spinal alignment!

The fact that Dr. Jason Loth is a sports chiropractor does lend some weight to the concept of the Luxury Hybrid as a helpful sleep tool, but does the mattress actually live up to all of this hype? Let’s take the plunge and see.

Keep reading for my complete review of the SpineAlign Luxury Hybrid. I also have a summary right here for those of you who may not have time to read the whole thing!

The SpineAlign Brand Snapshot

Dr. Jason Loth branded the SpineAlign Luxury Hybrid mattress as the centerpiece in a full suite of sleep products including pillows, essential oils, and supplements. The mattress comes in two sizes: the 11” Rest and Renew, the 13.5” Luxury Hybrid. This review will focus on the 13.5” Luxury Hybrid.

The price point of the Luxury Hybrid places it in competition with higher performance luxury bedding. In this league, sleepers should not have to trade cooling for comfort or support. I hope to find a high standard of performance overall even if the Luxury Hybrid is targeting people with back problems.

What Exactly is Aligning Your Spine in this Bed?

There are five layers in the SpineAlign Luxury Hybrid, each playing a vital role in the overall feel of this bed. The interesting stuff is the unique mix of latex alternatives and the variety of foams used. SpineAlign will need to get creative to provide a mattress that solves back problems. Let’s take a look at each layer one by one.

Cover – The phase change material in the cover of the Luxury Hybrid helps to cool the sleeper. It also has a slick feel to it that can be a little uncomfortable, because sheets may slide around it instead of “sticking” in a comfortable position.

Comfort – Energex is a latex foam alternative that has a quick response to pressure and is known for heat dissipation. It is a breathable material, so works with the cover to help the mattress sleep cool.

Transition – The SpineAlign Luxury Hybrid uses “ArctiPHASE” foam, which is 2” of gel foam. The gel is meant to cool the sleeper while the hyperelasticity provides some gentle contouring to the body.

Contour – Memory foam serves as a buffer between the soft foam top layers and the pocketed coils that give the Luxury Hybrid its bounce. Although memory foam is known for its contouring ability, it can’t really be felt this far down in the bed. It’s mostly just here to dull the springs slightly and provide a subtle amount of pressure relief for heavier sleepers.

Support – The Luxury Hybrid’s main support comes from the pocketed coil layers that start from the base of the bed.. They also make the mattress bouncy, which the memory foam above evens out slightly. The coils also help to shape the bed while aligning the spine, which is what the Luxury Hybrid is all about!

Thoughts: The SpineAlign Luxury Hybrid is a true hybrid of foam and springs that gives a good balance between mobility and comfort. These are two features that are sometimes difficult to combine. Heavier sleepers may sink into the mattress a bit too much. However, the mattress retains its mobility when changing positions. Strict side sleepers and combo sleepers should find the mobility and pressure relief comfortable.

What Does the SpineAlign Luxury Hybrid Feel Like?

Body shape, size, and weight all make a huge difference in how a mattress feels. When I tested the mattress, I did so with a few of my colleagues, all of whom have different body compositions. The score below, then, is the average of our own personal firmness ratings.

SpineAlign Hybrid Firmness
Firmness level of the SpineAlign Luxury Hybrid mattress

We tested for firmness first in the SpineAlign Luxury Hybrid mattress. We use a firmness scale from 1 to 10 with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. 6.5, not 5, is the median and the industry standard for medium firmness. The Luxury Hybrid was just a little bit softer than this median, so it received a 6/10.

Before going any further I should note that this mattress comes in three firmness levels (soft, medium, firm) and I tested out the medium version. Which is about where I would rate it in terms of its balance of support and pressure relief. Those of you looking to sink in a bit more may want the softer version, while heavier folks may find the firm version more supportive.

I sank into the mattress immediately when lying on my back, but not too much. There is a quick response to pressure from the top layers of foam and the springs underneath. Changing positions was relatively easy. The Luxury Hybrid should provide most sleepers with a good degree of mobility because of the pressure response and bounciness of the mattress.

Testing out the SpineAlign Luxury Hybrid

Sinking into the mattress slightly is a positive for side sleepers, because most side sleepers need a bit of pressure relief in the shoulders and hips. The SpineAlign Luxury Hybrid gave me both with a comfortable body contour that really showed off its balance of lift and give. On my stomach, however, I felt my hips sink a bit too much into the mattress. When this happens, it can lead to uncomfortable back bowing that turns up as aches and pains in the morning. Heavier sleepers will probably push even further into the mattress than I did (at 190 lbs).

Overall, the Luxury Hybrid should be a good fit for strict side sleepers and combo sleepers because of its pressure relief and mobility.

Testing Out the SpineAlign Luxury Hybrid

Bounce, Pressure, and Motion Transfer are three very important ways to measure the performance of a mattress. We tested the Luxury Hybrid for all three and here’s what we found.

Pressure

We put a pressure map on top of the Luxury Hybrid to record pressure in real time. The map is color coded from blue (low/no pressure) to red (high/uncomfortable pressure). We slept in different positions to see how the mattress felt for different kinds of sleepers.

SpineAlign Hybrid Pressure

Back – The weight of the body is fairly even when lying on one’s back, so getting all blue here is a good sign. There are no sinkpoints at the hips or in the shoulders, which would definitely cause the back to lose alignment.

Side – Side sleeping on the SpineAlign Luxury Hybrid should be comfortable based on the pressure map we saw. There were only a few small areas of green in sensitive areas like the shoulders and hips. This speaks to the pressure relief that the Energex comfort layer provides.

I think the side sleepers out there will like the SpineAlign Luxury Hybrid

Stomach – On the stomach, the weight of the body is pretty evenly distributed (just like the back). The pressure map showed all blue. However, the hips lie in a vulnerable position when sleeping on the stomach, and it’s important to check for areas with too much give. I found that my hips sank into the Luxury Hybrid a bit too much to be comfortable when lying on my stomach. When the hips sink, it can cause the back to bend over time. Some sleepers may wake up with aches and pains in the lower back here, so strict stomach sleepers might need more support. While we know there are a good number of stomach sleepers out there, in his professional opinion Dr. Loth finds it to be an unhealthy sleeping position and only recommends side and back sleeping because of the stress that he says stomach sleeping can put on your back.

Bounce

I expected the pocketed coils in the Luxury Hybrid to give the bed a buoyant lift. I dropped a 10 lbs. ball onto the mattress to emulate the bounce when a sleeper gets out of bed or changes positions. The bounceback tells us if a sleeper will feel stuck in the mattress when moving around. We were happy to find that the Luxury Hybrid gave our ball (and thus our sleeper) a great deal of mobility.

Motion Transfer

Our Motion Transfer test uses the same 10 lbs. ball. We bounce the ball on one side from 4”, 8”, and 12”. We put a seismometer on the other side of the bed and measure the motion. The placement of the seismometer emulates what your partner would feel if you were jumping in or out of bed or changing positions.

I was impressed with the Luxury Hybrid’s motion isolation. You might think that a bouncy mattress would transfer a lot of unwanted motion, but the opposite is true here. The soft top layers do more than provide comfort — they also dull motion from side to side, which is great if you’re sleeping with a partner.

Luxury Hybrid Recommendations

  • The SpineAlign Luxury Hybrid sleeps cool. The cover’s phase change material in the cover and the Energex in the second layer work well to draw heat away from the sleeper.
  • Combo sleepers will probably love the mobility the Luxury Hybrid gives. It’s easy to switch positions, and the bed doesn’t have any hugely uncomfortable pressure points in any position.
  • Couples should find the motion isolation in the Luxury Hybrid quite helpful to a good night’s sleep.

Luxury Hybrid Complaints

  • If you are a heavier sleeper (above 250 lbs.), you may need a bit more support. This is especially true if you’re a strict stomach sleeper.
  • The slick nature of the cover may be cause some complaints as you may experience some unwanted sliding around!
