If youโre shopping for a high-end hybrid mattress that keeps you cool at night, the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid may leave a refreshing impression. True to its name, this bedโs impressive cooling performance delivers a minty-fresh sleeping experience, making it a strong contender for hot sleepers.
But cooling is only part of the story; we also wanted to find out whether its pressure relief, support, and overall comfort were just as refreshing.
To get the full picture, my fellow testers and I evaluated the Mint Hybrid mattress firsthand in our Charlotte, NC, testing studio, putting it through a series of tests and resting on it ourselves to see how it would perform in your home.
At Sleepopolis, weโve spent more than a decade evaluating mattresses and sleep products, using a data-driven testing process that we have applied to hundreds of beds (over 500 mattresses, to be more precise).
We combine hands-on testing with objective performance measurements to help shoppers make informed decisions. We also consulted Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, to provide additional sleep-health expertise and ensure our analysis reflects current sleep science research.
Read on to see how the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid performed overall and to determine if itโs the right fit for your sleep setup.
Our Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Review, Summarized
The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid is a premium offering from the brand that couples soft layers of memory foam with durable innerspring coils. It earned exceptional scores in motion isolation and cooling, making it a good option for couples and hot sleepers. However, its soft foams made it difficult to change positions on and caused the perimeter to sink more, meaning it isnโt the best choice for combination sleepers or those who rely on stable sides to stand up in the morning.
The Mint Hybrid is the Tuft & Needleโs higher-end hybrid model. The Mint Hybrid contains layers of thick memory foam followed by a foam-encased layer of supportive coils. We found that it works best for couples, side sleepers, and hot sleepers.
What our tester says:
โThe coils in the Mint Hybrid give the mattress its shape and should help it maintain its structural integrity over time. The dense foam layer the coils are encased in should also contribute to its overall durability.โ -Kenny Timper, Staff Writer and Certified Sleep Science CoachOur Review Process
At Sleepopolis, our team of certified sleep science coaches personally tests each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time lying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our back, stomach, and side. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on each mattress.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Mattress Overview

The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid is the brandโs luxurious hybrid model. It has layers of thick memory foam followed by a foam-encased layer of supportive innerspring coils. During my testing, I found it to be an ultra-soft model that works best for couples, side sleepers, and those who run hot.
Unfortunately, its lack of responsiveness and edge support makes it incompatible with combination sleeping and those who lie near the perimeter of the mattress.
Who I Recommend the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid For
- Couples and those who share their bed with a pet should appreciate the Tuft & Needleโs exceptional motion isolation.
- Hot sleepers will benefit from the Mint Hybridโs 5-star cooling.
- Side sleepers with sensitive joints should get the cushioning and contouring they need from this mattress.

Who I Donโt Recommend the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid For
- Sleepers with mobility concerns should opt for a mattress with stronger edge support.
- Combination sleepers will probably feel trapped in the Mint Hybridโs plush foam layers.
- Apart from some side sleepers who prefer a softer surface, sleepers with bigger bodies will not get enough support from this mattress.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Value
At $1,995 for a queen-size mattress, the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid might not be the most budget-friendly bed, but its innerspring coils and dense layers of memory foam should help maintain its structural integrity for 10 years or longer. It is also GREENGUARD Gold Certified, meaning it does not contain any of the over 10,000 harmful chemicals and VOCs that contribute to poor indoor air quality. For couples and hot sleepers looking for a long-term mattress, this could be a worthwhile investment, thanks to its durable build and additional third-party certification.
What Is the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Made Of?

The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid is the brandโs more upscale hybrid mattress. The Mint Hybrid is 14 inches tall and contains three layers of memory foam and one layer of individually wrapped coils for a balance of pressure relief and support.
Cover โ The Mint Hybridโs cover layer contains cooling technology to help keep the mattress crisp and comfortable through the night. During testing, it didnโt feel particularly cool to the touch while lying on it initially, but it performed well on our thermal gun test, which Iโll explain in more detail later in this review.
Comfort Layers โ The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid contains three layers of memory foam with varying firmness levels for pressure relief and support. The top layer feels firmer at first, but it settles in. The two layers of memory foam beneath it enhance pressure relief and conform to your joints as you sink further into the mattress. While testing this mattress, I definitely felt like it had more of an โon topโ of the bed feel initially until I had lain in one position for an extended time.
Support Layer โ The support layer of the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid consists of individually wrapped coils and micro coils. These coils give the mattress its shape and help it maintain its structural integrity over time. The dense foam layer the coils are encased in should also contribute to its overall durability.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Mattress Firmness
Finding a mattress with the right firmness for you is very important. If a mattress is too firm, it can cause pain buildup, and if it is too soft, you wonโt get the support you need to keep your spine in healthy alignment.
โA mattress might be too firm if you experience pressure points, discomfort, lack of spinal alignment, or discomfort in certain sleeping positions,โ explains Dr. Raj Dasgupta, one of our medical advisors. โPersonal preference also matters, so simply adjusting with a topper or softer comfort layer can help. If discomfort continues, consider a slightly softer mattress with proper support.โ
The firmness and overall feel of a mattress also depend on personal attributes (mainly body weight and sleeping position). For this reason, our panel of in-house mattress experts with various body types and sleep preferences lie on the Mint Hybrid on their backs, sides, and stomachs to assess its firmness.
Every tester rated the firmness level according to our mattress firmness guide, and we averaged their individual scores to determine an overall firmness rating.

We gave the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid a firmness rating of 5.5 out of 10. My fellow mattress testers and I thought that it was much softer than the industry standard of medium-firm, or 6.5 out of 10.
It felt particularly soft on my side. While lying in this position, I could feel it cradling my hips and shoulders. Iโm around 160 pounds, so I didnโt sink in too far to cause misalignment. That said, this mattress will likely feel a bit firmer to sleepers lighter than me and softer to those who are heavier.
Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Mattress Performance
When my fellow mattress testers and I are in the lab getting hands-on with every new bed that comes our way, we rely on a consistent review methodology to rate its performance in key areas that matter most to shoppers. See how the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid performed in cooling, edge support, pressure relief, and more below.
Pressure Relief Performance
Your mattress should support and cushion your joints enough to prevent pressure buildup and pain in sensitive areas, including the lower back, hips, and shoulders. If your mattress isnโt delivering the pressure relief you need, you could wake up feeling stiff and sore.
We test every mattress using a tactile surface mat, called a pressure map, to measure how the mattress distributes weight in both the back- and side-sleeping positions. The pressure map generates a color-coded image (or map). Blue and green zones indicate minimal pressure, while yellow and red ones show high-pressure buildup. This visual aid helps us determine how well a mattress relieves tension for different body types and sleep positions.
The pressure map also shows us the average PSI (pressure per square inch) in both positions. The average PSI measurements for side sleeping and back sleeping are 14.58 and 12.43, respectively. Any number lower than those generally points to solid pressure relief.

During testing, the mat calculated an average PSI of 11.19 for side-sleeping and 8.59 for back-sleeping for our average-weight tester. Our lightweight tester saw equally impressive results, with a PSI of 10.67 for side-sleeping and 8.91 for back-sleeping. These are notable because lightweight sleepers typically experience more pressure buildup than other weight categories, as they typically donโt sink as far into the mattress.

However, the Mint Hybrid may not be the best fit for back and stomach-sleepers with larger bodies. While lying on the Mint Hybrid myself, I noticed more sinkage in my lower body over time. My concern is that these sleepers may not get the lift they need around their hips, which could cause pressure buildup over time.
Motion Isolation
When we talk about motion isolation, we are referring to how well a mattress dampens movement on one side of the bed and prevents it from traveling to the other side. If you share your bed with a restless partner or pet, you probably want a mattress with minimal motion transfer. My fellow mattress testers and I gave the Mint Hybrid a strong 4.3 out of 5 in this category.
Ripple test: For this test, one of our testers lies next to a bin full of water on the mattress. Next, they move around and change sleeping positions next to the bin of water to see if the liquid ripples, splashes, or spills onto the mattress.
During this test, I had to put in a lot of effort to get the water in the container to move around. When I got in and out of bed normally, it barely moved. There was barely a ripple when tossing and turning on the bed. Based on the ripple test results, the motion isolation seemed very promising.

Motion transfer test: The partner motion transfer test helps us determine how a mattress would perform for couples. During this test, two testers lie on the mattress. One tester wears a blindfold and lies still on their side of the bed while the other tester rolls around and gets in and out of bed on the opposite side. The blindfolded tester raises their hand or gives a thumbs up whenever they detect movement on their side of the bed.
When my fellow mattress tester, Sosha Lewis, was getting in and out of bed, I couldnโt tell what she was doing. I didnโt really feel her get into bed at all. However, it was more disturbing and noticeable when she was changing sleeping positions next to me because she had to put in a lot of effort into moving around, since this mattress isnโt responsive at all. Ironically, if it were just a little springier, it would have better motion isolation.
Responsiveness
Responsiveness refers to how quickly a mattress returns to its original form after adding and removing weight or changing positions on it. Responsiveness is essential for ease of movement for combination sleepers (sleepers who frequently change sleeping positions to get comfortable).
As a general rule of thumb, hybrid mattresses are more responsive than memory foam mattresses, thanks to the bouncy innerspring coils in their construction. However, I found that Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid was on the weaker side in this category, earning only a 2 out of 5 during my testing.
Switch test: During the switch test, we note how difficult it is to change sleeping positions on the bed. In my testing, I found that the Mint Hybrid was shockingly challenging to move around on.
The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid is a super soft mattress, and the foam layers on top sink in quite a bit as you lie on it. You get some bounce from the springs, but the foam is almost too thick and soft for it to really be meaningful. For this reason, I do not recommend this mattress for average-weight and heavier combination sleepers.
Sinkage test: Next, we place a 53-pound kettlebell on the mattress. Next, we use a ruler to measure the sinkage. During this test, I measured 8 inches of sinkage on the Tuft & Needle mattress, which placed it in the deep sinkage category. For reference, light sinkage is up to 2.5 inches, moderate sinkage ranges from 2.6 to 4 inches, and deep sinkage is 4.1 inches or more.

I think lightweight and average-weight sleepers will get decent cushioning around pressure-prone zones like their shoulders, hips, and lower backs. While some heavier side sleepers who prefer an ultra-soft surface may enjoy the sinkage around their hips and shoulders, most sleepers with larger bodies will not have enough support for spinal alignment.
Bounce test: Finally, a courageous mattress tester who isnโt afraid of heights (not me) climbs 6 feet on a ladder above the mattress and drops a 25-pound steel ball. A yardstick on the wall helps us measure how high the ball bounces and determine how responsive the mattress is.
To my surprise, the ball bounced 24 inches on the Mint Hybrid, placing it in our high bounce category. The Tuft & Needle bounce beat our average of 15.8 inches by nearly 10 inches. For reference, low bounce is anything under 8 inches, moderate bounce ranges from 8 to 12 inches, and high bounce is above 12 inches.
These results do not coincide with what I found during the switch test on the Mint Hybrid mattress. While the springs did a lot to bounce the ball up in the air, they were not effective in helping me and other mattress testers move around on the bed in actuality.
Cooling
What the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid lacks in responsiveness, it more than makes up for in cooling. I gave it a perfect 5-star score in this category for its exceptional performance on our thermal gun test.
If youโre a hot sleeper, cooling features (like graphite, cooling gels, and phase change material) help elevate your sleep experience. Hybrid models generally perform better in this category, as their innerspring coils naturally make them more breathable.
Thermal gun test: I used a thermal gun to measure the surface temperature of the Mint Hybrid mattress before and after lying on it for five minutes. While taking its temperature after getting out of bed, I saw that it had increased by 2.5 degrees, placing it among some of our best cooling mattresses.

Feel test: The feel test is exactly what it sounds like. I feel the mattress before and after lying on it to see if itโs cool to the touch and if thereโs any heat retention.
Initially, it didnโt feel cool to the touch, but I couldnโt feel it overheating or anything beneath me. I was surprised at the thermal gun results. In most cases, I think this bed would be an excellent option for hot sleepers. However, if you sleep in a particularly hot environment, you might notice that the foam layers trap more heat.
Edge Support
We test edge support to see how well the mattressโs perimeter maintains its structure when someone is sitting or lying down on it. Couples, heavy people, and individuals with mobility concerns all benefit from a mattress with solid edge support.
With strong edge support, you can sit or lie on the far reaches without feeling unsteady. It provides an unyielding surface to push down on when getting up in the morning, which is particularly important for those with mobility issues.
Dr. Dasgupta also says itโs a great indicator of long-term durability: โEdge support will help you determine if a mattress will maintain its shape and quality over time, as reinforced edges are less prone to sagging over time.โ
I gave the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid a 2.6 out of 5 in the edge support category. While its durable coils and micro coils should help the bed maintain its shape over time, the top layers of soft foam compressed a lot under my body weight and the weights we use during some of our tests.
Tape measure test: During the tape measure test, our team stacks weights directly onto the edge of the mattress and measures how much the bed sinks under each load. We repeat this process three times with increasing weight loads: 99 pounds, 154 pounds, and 198 pounds. The testers then record the level of sinkage under each stack of weight using a tape measure.

This test evaluates how well the mattress supports weight along its perimeter. The 99-pound stack represents lightweight sleepers, the 154-pound stack represents average-weight sleepers, and the 198-pound stack represents heavyweight sleepers. The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid sank 4 inches, 5.5 inches, and 7.5 inches, in each of these categories, respectively.
Based on these results, lightweight and average-weight sleepers will probably get the best mix of support and cushioning from this mattress. Side sleepers with larger bodies might find this mattress more comfortable in the center (the most supportive part) of the bed.
Seated test: For the seated test, I sat down and stood up multiple times to evaluate how easy it was to get in and out of bed. I also paid attention to how secure I felt while sitting on the bed.
While I didnโt bottom out on the perimeter of the bed, I sank in a lot while sitting on the edges and corners. When I pushed into the sides of the mattress with my hands, I had to put in a lot of effort to finally push through the ultra-soft foam and reach the supportive spring layer. This mattress is certainly not a good fit for anyone who sits on the side of the bed to tie their shoes or those with mobility concerns.

Full body test: Next, I lay along the perimeter of the Mint Hybrid to see if I could comfortably sleep on the edge of the bed without fear of falling off. My experience lying down on the edge of the mattress was only slightly better than sitting down on it. When lying in one position, I didnโt feel like I was going to fall off immediately, but I could feel it collapse a bunch beneath me. When I attempted to change positions, I almost fell off.

Mattress Performance for Couples
The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid mattress could work for some couples, especially those who sleep hot or are easily disturbed by movement. Its above-average motion isolation should make it a good option for most couples. That said, if you have a particularly restless partner, the lack of responsiveness might make it difficult for them to adjust themselves at night. The slow-moving memory foam might also make it difficult for sexually active couples to maneuver during intimate moments.
Other Performance Factors to Consider About the Mint Hybrid
Before you decide to haul your old bed to the dump and replace it with the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid, there are a few other factors beyond our core testing you should consider. Read more about them below.
Sex
Mattresses for sex are responsive, keep things cool, and provide robust edge support. The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid lacks in the responsiveness and edge support categories, meaning it probably isnโt the best fit for sexually active couples. We gave it an overall sex score of 3.2 out of 5.
Noise
The coils are wrapped up in a layer of dense memory foam, so you could jump on this mattress without worrying about it making a sound.
Durability
Although edge support is a great indicator of durability, itโs not the only indicator. Despite the Mint Hybrid having weaker edge support than most other hybrid mattresses, I still think this bed is a good long-term option for sleepers with specific needs.
The memory foam layers in this mattress are dense enough to resist sagging over time, and its tall layer of innerspring coils should help the bed keep its shape for many years.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Sleeping Position and Body Weight
Body weight significantly impacts how a mattress feels, which is why our in-house team gets feedback from mattress testers across a range of body types.
โSleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds are likely to find a mattress more firm because they will not get as much contouring,โ explains Dr. Dasgupta. โLikewise, a firmer mattress might sink deeper for those who weigh 230 pounds or more, which would make it feel softer.โ
Before we dive into our recommendations, though, we want to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call โaverageโ (130 to 230 pounds).
As a general takeaway, lighter sleepers donโt require as much support as average-weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average-weight sleepers and sink into the mattress more. As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers likely need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.
Is the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers โ Light back sleepers should find the Mint Hybrid very comfortable. These sleepers will sink in less than average-weight and heavy sleepers, so they should get some nice contouring in their lower lumbar area, while still getting enough support for proper spinal alignment.
- Light Side Sleepers โ Side sleepers in this weight category will probably think this mattress feels a touch firmer, especially if they have sensitive shoulders or hips. That said, they should still sink far enough into the soft foams of the Mint Hybrid to receive its full pressure-relieving benefits.
- Light Stomach Sleepers โ Similar to back sleepers in this weight category, stomach sleepers should get enough lift around their hips to keep their spines in a healthy, neutral position through the night.
Is the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid a Good Mattress for Average-Weight Sleepers (130โ230 pounds)?
- Average-Weight Back Sleepers โ Average-weight sleepers who sleep primarily on their backs should enjoy sleeping on the Mint Hybrid. These sleepers should get an optimal balance of support and pressure relief.
- Average-Weight Side Sleepers โ Side sleepers will appreciate the extra cushioning on this mattress. These sleepers should expect this mattress to cradle their shoulders and hips.
- Average-Weight Stomach Sleepers โ This mattress should generally work for average-weight stomach sleepers. That said, some of them might find that they sink too far into the soft foams for their liking.
Is the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 230 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers โ The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid is probably not the best fit for sleepers in this category. These sleepers need more lower-back support to keep their spines in healthy, neutral alignment.
- Heavy Side Sleepers โ Sleepers in this weight category might appreciate the extra cushioning in this position. These sleepers will get the most contouring in pressure-prone areas, like their shoulders and hips.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers โ Stomach sleepers in this weight category should avoid the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid. These sleepers will not get enough support around their hips and lower bodies to maintain a healthy spinal positioning.

Itโs always a good idea to compare your options before committing to one mattress. Hereโs how the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid stacks up against some of the competition.
Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid vs Nectar Premier Hybrid
The Nectar Premier Hybrid is similar to the Tuft & Needle Mint mattress because it couples soft memory foam with innerspring coils. During testing, we found that the Nectar Premier Hybrid was a bit firmer than the Mint Hybrid at 6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, or medium-firm.
- Price: At full price, the Nectar Premier Hybrid is more expensive than the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid. A queen-sized Nectar Premier Hybrid will cost you $2,316 before any discounts. That said, it often goes on sale for just under $1,000, which is significantly cheaper than the Mint Hybrid.
- Sleeping position: The soft memory foam of the Mint Hybrid makes it a better choice for side-sleeping, especially if you have sensitive joints. However, the medium-firm feel of the Nectar makes it a better fit for back and stomach sleeping.
- Cooling: The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid is the clear winner here, earning a perfect 5-star score in this category. The Nectar Premier Hybrid only earned a 3.5 out of 5.
- Body weight: The Nectar Premier Hybrid is a better fit for average-weight and heavier sleepers, thanks to its stronger support and firmer feel. Lightweight sleepers may prefer the soft feel of the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid vs Saatva Classic
The Saatva Classic is the firmer, innerspring-loaded answer to the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid. The Saatva is another, more luxurious option, featuring a Euro-top cover layer and two layers of individually wrapped coils. The Luxury Firm version of the Saatva feels like a traditional innerspring mattress and earned a firmness rating of 7.5 out of 10 during our testing.
- Price: The Saatva Classic is close to the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid in price at $2,179 (or just below $1,900 after discounts).
- Sleeping position: The Saatva Classic is far from side-sleeper friendly because of its firmness level. It is, however, a better option for back and stomach sleeping.
- Cooling: Both mattresses are strong contenders in this category, but the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid has the edge here again.
- Body weight: The Saatva Classic is the clear winner for heavier sleepers. The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid is a better option for lightweight sleepers and average-weight sleepers who prefer a softer sleep surface.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid vs. Other Tuft & Needle Models
The Mint Hybrid also faces some strong competition from other models in the Tuft & Needle camp. See how it compares to the popular Tuft & Needle Original mattress below.
Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid vs Tuft & Needle Original
The Tuft & Needle Original mattress is a bare-bones, all-foam mattress. It scored surprisingly well across the board, and earned a firmness rating of 6 out of 10.
- Price: Unsurprisingly, the Tuft & Needle Original is much cheaper than the Mint Hybrid at $895 for a queen-sized bed.
- Sleeping position: The Tuft & Needle Original is a solid fit for all sleep positions (depending on weight). However, the Mint Hybrid stands as a better option for strict side-sleepers and side-sleepers with shoulder and hip pain.
- Cooling: The Tuft & Needle Original had lackluster cooling results, earning a 3 out of 5 in the category. Sleepers who wake up covered in sweat should opt for the Mint Hybrid between the two options.
- Body weight: The Tuft & Needle Original and Mint Hybrid work best for lightweight and average-weight sleepers. Neither option is a great fit for heavy sleepers. However, some side sleepers with larger bodies may enjoy the thick, soft layers of the Mint Hybrid.
