New 24 Hour Nap Cafe Opens in New York City

New York may be the “city that never sleeps,” but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t nap. Nap Yorkjust opened up in Manhattan, a new wellness oasis that provides a handful of 24-7 services, including nap pods where people can pay $10 to catch a 30 minute snooze. These pods are fittingly found on Nap York’s “recharge floor.”

These pods are designed to promote ultimate relaxation, privacy, and safety. Each guest relaxes on an Airweave mattress, which is 100% coil and foam free, made instead with innovative “Airfiber” technology. (And fear not, New Yorkers! Each mattress comes with a bed bug cover.) The ceiling is dotted with gently twinkling stars, there is apt storage for shoes and personal belongings, and each pod includes a Nest Protect, one of the top smoke and CO alarms on the market.

According to one reporterwho experienced the pod herself, the space also comes equipped with live plants, soundproof curtains, essential oil diffusers, noise-canceling headphones, and lamps for reading.

Currently, there are seven pods available to rent, but Nap York plans to expand that number to 30 pods by April, and also has plans to open up a rooftop smoothie and juice bar.

Nap York’s mission goes beyond simply creating a space for napping. Instead, they state: “ Our mission at Nap York is to provide an oasis for New Yorkers to focus on cultivating wellness in body and mind; a quiet place to concentrate deliberately on yourself.” In additional to the nap pods, Nap York also offers yoga classes (including vinyasa, yin, and meditation sessions), a lounge with cozy egg chairs for reading or meditation, and a healthy cafe.

For all the hustle and bustle of New York, Nap York could very well start a new trend for relax and recharge spaces. Studies are continuing to pop up that discuss how a lack of sleep could hinder work productivity, and how napping is becoming more and more encouraged in the workplace. Sleep expert and psychologist Dr Nerina Ramlakhan writes, “Just a twenty minute power nap can make a huge difference. Naps have been scientifically proven to boost creativity and problem solving ability, and they can even re- balance the immune system, meaning staff are less likely to take sick days.”

Let us not forget that a study came out earlier this year that said more sleep for students could boost the economy by $83 billion.

So whether you’re a psychology major or work on Wall Street, it’s important to get a good night’s rest, and make sure you listen to your body if you need a pick-me-up in the middle of the day. If so, a trip to Nap York could be the best thing you can do for your body and mind.
