If you’re not already familiar, Tuft & Needle is a popular online mattress manufacturer. We’ve reviewed the brand’s three bed-in-a-box mattresses here on Sleepopolis (you can find links to those below) and have found them to be high-quality and budget friendly. But, Tuft & Needle doesn’t just make mattresses, the brand also produces a range of bedding products like sheets, pillows, bed frames, and of course, the mattress topper I’m reviewing here.
In this review, I’ll share my experience testing the Tuft & Needle topper. I’ll explain its materials, overall feel, and the brand’s policies. I’ll also share which sleepers I think it’s best for, which should help you decide if you should buy it.

Who is the Tuft & Needle Mattress Topper Best For?
Before buying a mattress topper, you’ll want to consider a few key factors. I’d typically keep in mind your body type, how hot (or cold) you sleep, your price range, whether you’re looking for softness or support, if you suffer from pain, and your body type.
It’s also important to consider what type of mattress you have. For example, if you have a very firm mattress, a small two inch topper isn’t going to make it a soft mattress. Keep in mind that toppers can enhance the feel of a bed, but they can’t radically change it.
Who I recommend the Tuft & Needle mattress topper for
- I think this topper is great for anyone looking to add a little softness and pressure relief to their mattress. This topper is one the thinner side, so it’s only going to slightly alter your mattress’s overall feel.
- Back and stomach sleepers looking to relieve pressure should like the feel of this topper’s soft responsive foam.
- Anyone worried about their topper sliding on their mattress will be happy to know this topper has a non-skid bottom, so it stays firmly in place and prevents bunching.
Who I don’t recommend the Tuft & Needle mattress topper for
- I would steer heavier sleepers to a thicker topper. I think heavy people would sink right through this topper.
- Anyone looking to really change the overall feel of their mattress will need to look for a thicker topper (or even a new mattress!)
- Sleepers looking for added support won’t get what they need here — this topper just adds some plush softness. Instead, I’d steer these sleepers to a latex mattress topper.
What is the Tuft & Needle Mattress Topper Made Of?
Your topper’s materials are going to be the key factor in determining how it feels. Unlike mattresses, which tend to be made with a number of different materials, toppers are usually made from one or two layers of foam or latex foam. The Tuft & Needle topper is made from hypoallergenic materials.
Cover – The Tuft & Needle topper’s cover is made from a smooth polyester blend. It has a nice breathable feel. The topper also has silicone beading on the bottom to prevent it from sliding around.
Fill – This topper’s fill is made from one solid block of responsive open-cell foam. This layer is 2 inches tall and it provides some nice cushioning, contouring, and pressure relief. Unlike a memory foam mattress topper, this topper has a quick response to pressure. This foam is also CertiPUR-US® certified, which means it’s free from harmful chemicals and pollutants.
How Does the Tuft & Needle Mattress Topper Feel
I tested the overall feel of this mattress topper by laying on it in different positions and on mattresses with different firmness levels. Keep in mind that feel is subjective and depends on factors like your weight and preferred sleeping position. Take a look below to see how it felt on three different mattresses.
Soft Mattress – This topper isn’t going to do much on a mattress that’s already soft. However, if you bought a soft mattress and suffer from hip pain or shoulder pain, you might want a topper like this one to offer even more relief at those pressure points.
Medium-Firm Mattress- I think this topper is a great addition to a medium-firm mattress. It could be an especially great choice for back sleepers who suffer from back pain and are looking for a little contouring at their lower back. I also think it could be a nice option for side sleepers looking to soften up their mattress a bit.
Firm Mattress – This topper isn’t going to make a firm mattress soft, but it will add a bit of cushioning. I’d recommend it to stomach sleepers who need a firm mattress, but want an added top layer with some gentle pressure relief.
Tuft & Needle Mattress Topper Sizes and Prices
You’ll likely want to know the price before purchasing this topper. This topper comes in all conventional sizes including twin XL and California king. Head to our Tuft & Needle coupon page or click one of the coupons in this article for the latest discounts.
Prices listed will be before discount or offer for each size.
|Twin||75" X 39" X 2"||$200|
|Twin XL||80" X 39" X 2"||$200|
|Full||75" X 54" X 2"||$250|
|Queen||80" X 60" X 2"||$250|
|King||80" X 76" X 2"||$300|
|California King||84" X 72" X 2"||$300|
Overall, I’d say this topper is great for anyone looking to add a bit of softness to their bed. This 2-inch topper will offer sleepers added pressure relief and contouring. However, this topper will not radically change your mattress’s feel — it isn’t like adding a pillow top. Sleepers looking for a real change in feel should look for a high-density foam topper or consider buying a new mattress. Lastly, I’d say that though this topper’s open-cell foam allows for some decent airflow, I’d steer hot sleepers to a gel-memory foam mattress topper or a foam topper with a graphite or cooling gel infusion. You can find lots of those in our best cooling mattress toppers roundup.

A mattress topper is meant to alter the overall feel of your mattress. A mattress protector is typically a thin piece of material made to protect your bed from spills or allergens. A mattress pad can add a bit of softness to the mattress, but not nearly as much as a topper would. However, all three can add durability to your mattress!
