Saatva vs Amerisleep Mattress: Similarities and Differences
Before we get too far into this article, I wanted to take a moment to discuss the main similarities and differences between these two mattresses. We’ll dig into all of this in more detail later, but I thought it might be useful to start things off with a bang!
Main Similarities
- Both the Saatva and Amerisleep mattresses come in multiple firmness options. The Saatva is available in three firmness levels (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm) and the Amerisleep is available in five (ranging from the ultra-firm AS1 to the cloudlike AS5). For the purpose of this comparison, we’re going to be looking at the “Luxury Firm” Saatva and the “AS2” Amerisleep mattress.
- I selected these two levels because they’re similarly supportive and firm. I should note, though, that they achieve this support in pretty distinct ways.
- And finally, I’d say that both of these mattresses are built with back sleepers in mind. So, if you’re someone who struggles with getting your hips aligned with your shoulders, either one of these beds should work for you.
Main Differences
- The most notable difference between these two mattresses is that the Amerisleep is built entirely of foam and the Saatva is built almost entirely of coils. As you could probably guess, these differing constructions produce unique feels, which we’ll explore in depth throughout this comparison.
- I’d also say that the Saatva is going to be a bouncier option than the Amerisleep. If you’re someone who likes to move around and change positions in the night, the Saatva could be a great option for you.
- It’s worth noting that the Amerisleep comes shipped in a box but the Saatva does not. This could be a dealbreaker depending on how you’d like to receive your mattress.
Which is Better for you?
This won’t be the last time that we address this question, but let’s go ahead and quickly go over a few recommendations based on some of the points outlined above.
- If you’re after an all-foam feel, the Amerisleep mattress is going to be the one for you! It’s built with memory foam, poly foam, and high-density poly foam for a pleasantly cozy balanced foam feel.
- If you sleep with a partner, you may want to consider the Saatva mattress. This bed is super durable and has some excellent edge support, which helps maximize the usable surface area of the structure. However, if you’re easily disturbed by your partner’s movements, you might prefer the Amerisleep, which has better motion isolation, meaning you’re less likely to feel movement from one side of the bed on the other.
- If you’re a combo sleeper who likes moving around at night, you should take a serious look at the Saatva. This innerspring mattress is bouncy and highly mobile!
- If you’re looking for a true bed-in-a-box mattress, you’ll need to go with the Amerisleep. Why? Well, the Saatva doesn’t ship in a box!
What Do These Mattresses Feel Like?
With all that sorted, it’s time to dig into my favorite subject of any mattress comparison — how these babies feel! To do this, I’m going to discuss a few different feel factors, including firmness options, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, sinkage, sleeping position, edge support, and more! That way, we’ll be able to paint a complete picture of these beds’ totally unique vibes.
I also want to acknowledge that feel is an inherently subjective measure and can change a lot depending on one’s body size, shape, and weight. Therefore, my read of these beds could very well differ from your own!
Saatva
After hopping aboard the Saatva, I decided to give it a 7/10 on the firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this is one firm mattress.
The Saatva got a 7/10 from me because its coil-on-coil construction produces a firm, supportive, and bouncy vibe. And this makes sense — I’d technically classify the Saatva as an innerspring mattress, meaning it’s got a taut, old-school feel. If you’re someone who enjoys something a little more traditional, the Saatva could be the one for you. Additionally, I think back and stomach sleepers could find a lot to enjoy in the bed’s immense support and firmness. As I mentioned earlier, combo sleepers may also like the buoyant lift and mobility of this mattress.
I do want to make it clear, though, that the Saatva isn’t hard as a rock or anything like that. It also has a gentle organic cotton cover and a quilted foam pillow top layer that provides some nice comfort as soon as you stretch out on the bed. However, the dominant feel is definitely one of being lifted “on top” of the bed as opposed to being drawn “into” it. This lift helps to set the spine in a nice even line all the way from the shoulders to the hips, which could be great for those who struggle with sensitive pressure points or lower back pain.
The Saatva also sleeps quite cool, thanks to the spaces between the steel coils in the bed’s core. As you move around the bed, you’ll likely notice some nice airflow throughout the mattress, which helps to keep those temps low while you snooze. But perhaps my favorite feature of the Saatva is its foam edge support, which wraps around the entire steel coil system. This makes it possible for folks to sleep on the way to the sides of the bed, marking the mattress as an excellent option for couples.
I should also mention that the Saatva comes in three different firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm (could also be considered a relaxed firm feel), and Firm. The Luxury Firm option is the one I tested for the purposes of this comparison.
The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It's a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs.
We recommend this mattress for the following sleeper types: Financing options are available for this mattress. We were skeptical of buying a mattress on line but it could not have gone any smoother. Anthony answered all of our questions during our many phone conversations. Delivery was prompt and went without a hitch. Best of all the mattress is so comfortable! Amerisleep
I also gave the Amerisleep mattress a 7/10 on the firmness scale. Again, when we compare this number to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this bed is on the firmer side of things.
Though I technically gave both the Saatva and Amerisleep the same firmness score, I don’t want you to think that they feel similar. In fact, they don’t really feel that similar at all. As I mentioned up top, the AS2 Amerisleep mattress is built entirely of foam, which gives it an immediately softer feel than that of the Saatva. However, I would note that this is one of the firmest all-foam mattresses I’ve ever tried out. Why? Well, the thin comfort layer of memory foam rests atop much firmer sections of poly foam and high-density poly foam. These layers cut down on the memory foam layer’s sinkage and body-contouring, establishing the firm and supportive vibe.
I think this feel could work for a wide range of sleepers, which is probably why the AS2 is the most popular Amerisleep mattress. The just above medium firmness of it makes it a great match for back, stomach, and combo sleepers. All of these dreamers will likely benefit from the bed’s balanced lift, which sets the hips in line with the shoulders for cozy sleeping all night long. And though there’s some memory foam at play here, there’s really not enough for side sleepers to feel comfortable. These folks typically need a deeper sink for pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
If you’ve been doing mattress research for long, you’ve likely noticed that memory foam mattresses typically run fairly hot. That’s because memory foam is an incredibly dense material, which means it traps and absorbs body heat. But what’s cool about the Amerisleep line is that they’re all built with a special plant-based Bio-Pur® material, which helps to dissipate some of this body heat. So, if you’ve avoided memory foam because of its reputation for being too hot, you may want to give Amerisleep a look!
And just to reiterate — I’ve solely been talking about the AS2 Amerisleep mattress in this comparison. It’s just one of five memory foam mattresses sold by Amerisleep. The others include the AS1 (the firmest option), the AS3 (medium firm), the AS4 (soft), and the AS5 (the softest). Though their designs differ, they’re all built with layers of memory foam over poly foam and high-density poly foam. They also all use the same Bio-Pur® technology to mitigate the overheating tendencies of memory foam.
Depending on your preferred sleeping position, you may enjoy some Amerisleep mattresses more than others. If you’re a stomach sleeper, I’d recommend going with either the AS1 or AS2. If you sleep on your back, I think you’d do best with the AS3. And if you sleep primarily on your side, I’d point you toward the soft AS4 and AS5 mattresses. Combination sleepers will likely want to stick with either the AS2 or AS3 models.
The second firmest of the Amerisleep line, the AS2 uses open cell memory foam in its comfort layer. The AS2 has a 3-inch transition layer of poly foam that provides bounce to allow sleepers to sink in without worrying about feeling stuck in the mattress.

What Are These Mattresses Made Of?
Now that we’ve gone over how these mattresses feel, let’s dig into their respective constructions. Below, I’m going to go over each design, but would also encourage you to check out my full reviews of the Saatva and Amerisleep mattresses.
Saatva
Cover – The Saatva cover is made from 100% organic cotton. This material is soft to the touch and super breathable, so should provide you with some nice comfort as soon as you hop aboard. I should also mention that the cover is quilted with a bit of foam, which ups the comfort game even more!
Comfort Layer – The top layer is made from a 3-inch Euro pillow top. This layer offers some nice cushioning and pressure relief.
Support Layer – A layer of individually wrapped pocketed coils contour to your body’s movement and add some nice bounce, airflow, and support.
Zoned Support Layer- There is a layer of memory foam in the center of the Saatva that offers some pressure relief in the middle of the mattress, where sleepers need it most at the hips and lower back.
Support Layer – The next and final layer is where you’ll find the main support system of the mattress. This section is built with steel coils wrapped in foam edge support, which brings an immense amount of firmness, bounce, and durability to the structure. As I mentioned in the feel section earlier, the coil-on-coil construction of this bed produces an innerspring vibe that could work wonders for those after more of a “traditional” feel. And again, I’d note that the addition here of foam edge support does a lot to maximize the usable surface area of the mattress, which could be a big plus for couples!
Amerisleep
Cover – The Amerisleep cover is made from a polyester and celliant blend. Celiant is an eco-friendly fiber that has been shown to dissipate body heat, which helps to keep temps low right off the bat.
Comfort Layer – Things kick off with a 2″ Bio-Pur® Comfort Layer. As we discussed earlier, this material has a similar feel to memory foam in that it has a slow response to pressure, allowing it to contour to the curves of the body. This provides some nice relief to pressure points across the body, especially at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. However, this section isn’t so thick that you should feel “swallowed” up by your bed at all. In fact, you should still feel lifted very much “on top” of the structure. I’ll note, again, that Bio-Pur® is a high-quality, eco-friendly, plant-based material that is naturally cooling.
Transition Layer – Up next, you’ll land on a transitional layer of affinity foam. This material has a much quicker response to pressure than the memory foam above it, working to curb the sinkage and body-contouring of this first layer. It also helps to ease the sleeper into the firmer base below.
Base Layer – And finally, we arrive at a thick section of high-density poly foam. This material brings some shape and stability to the structure, working to support the softer layers above it. The combination of memory foam with poly foam and high-density poly foam establishes a balanced feel that could work for a wide range of sleepers, particularly those who snooze on their backs.
Saatva vs Amerisleep: Best Mattress Qualities
Well folks, we’ve arrived at the end of this comparison. After sizing up these mattresses against one another, it’s time to button things up with a few expert recommendations. Below, I’m going to chat about who I think might like each of these beds.
Firstly, I think the Saatva is going to work best for those who want a firm, supportive, and bouncy feel. Again, this is an innerspring mattress, which means it’s designed with a buoyant lift meant to position the sleeper more “on top” of the structure than “in” it. If you like more of a traditional vibe or are buying for someone after a little old-school durability, I think this could be an excellent option for you. I’d also say that couples may really enjoy this mattress! Why? Well, there’s a layer of high-density poly foam edge support wrapped around the interior coil system, which works to expand the usable surface area of the mattress. This means you and your bed mate can sleep all the way to the sides of your bed… you know, in case you need a break from cuddling or need to change up your sleeping position!
And when it comes to the Amerisleep mattress, I think it will probably work best for back sleepers in search of an all-foam feel. It’s firm and supportive like the Saatva, but achieves this firmness in a more balanced and subtle way. You’ll get some nice cushioning here from the top layer of memory foam, but should never feel too overwhelmed by the soft material. Plus, the Amerisleep mattress comes shipped in a box, which can make for a more convenient sleeping solution depending on your preferences. I’d also remind you that the AS2 mattress is just one of five options from Amerisleep. So, if you need something firmer or softer, you’ll be able to find it from the brand!
Saatva Best Features
- Back sleepers could find a lot to love in the firm support of the Saatva innerspring mattress.
- Combination sleepers may also benefit from the coil-on-coil design, which makes it super easy to jump around and change positions.
- And lastly, I’d tell couples to give this mattress a look. The sturdy foam edge support is a real winner for all different sorts of bed mates!

Amerisleep Best Features
- This bed was built for back sleepers in need of both pressure relief and support at the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
- The Amerisleep line of mattresses is an excellent example of how to pull off a memory foam mattress that doesn’t sleep hot. So, if you’ve avoided the material because of its heat-retaining reputation, you may want to consider Amerisleep.
- You can pick and choose from a wide range of firmness options with the Amerisleep brand, which should appeal to a lot of different sleepers. Again, they range from the ultra-firm AS1 mattress to the cuddly soft AS5. The real difference between these beds lies in the amount of memory foam used in the top comfort layer.
The second firmest of the Amerisleep line, the AS2 uses open cell memory foam in its comfort layer. The AS2 has a 3-inch transition layer of poly foam that provides bounce to allow sleepers to sink in without worrying about feeling stuck in the mattress.

Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating
At Sleepopolis, we rank a brand’s customer service rating based on our personal interactions with the brand’s customer service team. A brand can either be ranked as Stellar, Great, Satisfactory, or Poor.
Saatva Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating
Satisfactory: There are a lot of options to get help, from immediate online chat to email and phone assistance. However, these functions are buried at the bottom of the site, so they’re not as immediately accessible as other brands. However, I found the people I spoke with to be personable and helpful, even though it did take them a little while to respond.
Amerisleep Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating
Great: It’s incredibly easy to reach customer support at Amerisleep. You can call or access a chat box that opens up as soon as you visit the site. I found my customer support rep to be helpful and very knowledgeable on a wide range of questions.
More from Saatva and Amerisleep
As I’ve mentioned a few times throughout this comparison, both Saatva and Amerisleep sell a lot of different mattresses. So, let’s meet a few of them below!
Zenhaven
- The Zenhaven is an all-latex mattress from Saatva. Latex is a super bouncy material that also happens to sleep quite cool.
- An interesting thing about this mattress is that it’s flippable, so you can switch between two totally different firmness levels. I would say, however, that latex can be quite heavy, so you may not want to flip it all that often.
- Overall, I think this bed could work best for combo sleepers or those who tend to overheat at night.
- In terms of cost, it’s the most expensive Saatva mattress.
- Read my full Zenhaven mattress review.
The Zenhaven is extremely durable, so you know you are investing in a mattress that will last a while. Another great perk of this latex bed is that it’s naturally cooling, which hot sleepers should appreciate. You also get two firmness levels in one with this bed since it is flippable.

Saatva Solaire
- The Solaire is an air mattress that can be adjusted to have 50 different firmness options. In terms of adjustability, this is the most customizable mattress from Saatva.
- I’d also say that this air mattress isolates motion well, marking it as a solid choice for couples.
- As with any airbed, the Solaire may lose a bit of air overnight, which could be an issue for sleepers after more of a consistent feel.
- Check out my full Saatva Solaire review to learn more.

Loom & Leaf
- The Loom & Leaf is a memory foam mattress from Saatva. It’s soft, gentle, and deeply pressure-relieving at the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
- Side sleepers will likely enjoy the contouring relief of this cozy memory foam model.
- In terms of cost, it’s a little more expensive than the Saatva, but less expensive than the Zenhaven.
- For more, check out my full Loom & Leaf review.
The Loom & Leaf is a pressure-relieving memory foam mattress. It offers deep sinkage and contouring, and its foam layers absorb almost all movement, making it a great option for couples.

Amerisleep Hybrid
- All five of the Amerisleep memory foam mattresses come in hybrid versions. A hybrid mattress is one that combines foam top layers with interior sections of either pocketed coils or springs to bring a little extra bounce to the structure.
- The Amerisleep hybrid mattresses are just like their all-foam counterparts, except they swap out the foundational layer of high-density poly foam for one of pocketed coils. This makes them bouncier, firmer, and more supportive.
- If you like the idea of a memory foam mattress, but need a little more durability, an Amerisleep hybrid mattress could be the one for you!
- As with the all-foam models, the AS1 hybrid mattress is going to be much, much firmer than the AS5 hybrid mattress.
The AS3 is in the middle of firmness options for Amerisleep, combining supportive design with pressure relief. The AS3 is 12” deep and consists of three layers. The comfort layer is 3” of open cell memory, providing pressure relief.
