Stearns & Foster vs Tempur-Pedic Mattress Comparison

Stearns & Foster and Tempur-Pedic are two well-known, classic mattress brands — especially compared to the many direct-to-consumer online brands around nowadays. Tempur-Pedic has been in the mattress game since 1992 and Stearns & Foster dates all the way back to 1846… now that’s a classic mattress brand! Funny enough though, these brands are now owned by the same parent company, Tempur-Sealy.

In this comparison, I’ll be putting these sister mattress brands head-to-head by comparing the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate hybrid mattress with the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze mattress. These are both luxury mattresses, but there are some key differences that may help you decide which is better for you.

Stearns & Foster vs Tempur-Pedic Video Review

Need a quick rundown of each mattress and who I recommend them for? Check out my Stearns & Foster vs Tempur-Pedic video review below.

Stearns & Foster vs Tempur-Pedic: Top Similarities

  • Price: These are both luxury mattresses that offer a high-quality feel. That means they are also both more expensive than the average mattress.
  • Construction: Both of these mattresses are hybrids, meaning they utilize both coils and foams in their construction — although there are also two all-foam versions of the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze, which are either Soft or Firm. However, in this comparison I’ll primarily be covering the Medium Hybrid version.
  • Sleep position: Both beds can work well for back and side sleepers.

Stearns & Foster vs Tempur-Pedic: Top Differences

  • Add-ons: The Stearns & Foster Lux Estate has the option of adding a pillow top, which the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze does not have.
  • Feel: While these mattresses have a similar firmness, the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze offers more contouring and sinkage.

Stearns & Foster vs Tempur-Pedic: Construction & Feel Differences

Now let’s dig into how both of these beds feel. In this section, I’ll evaluate various factors, including firmness, pressure relief, bounce, and sinkage. Remember, these factors are highly subjective and can vary significantly based on individual body size, shape, and weight.

What’s the Firmness Difference?

When it comes to mattresses, your size, weight, shape, and other factors all determine your ideal level of firmness. So your preferences might not be the same as mine. When testing a mattress for firmness, we try to capture the variance different people might feel. I test every bed with colleagues of various body shapes, types, and sizes, then average those responses to determine the final firmness score.

My colleagues and I gave both mattresses a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. We rate firmness on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. For reference, the industry standard for a medium-firm mattress is a 6.5 on the firmness scale.

What Does Each Mattress Feel Like?

The Stearns & Foster is a supportive and responsive hybrid mattress. During testing, I felt supported by this mattress, which isn’t surprising since the Lux Estate mattress features Stearns & Foster’s proprietary IntelliCoil innerspring system, which is designed to adapt and support sleepers of all body types.

Despite being super plush, the Stearns & Foster mattress is still quite sturdy and supportive. I think most sleepers will find that this mattress has a more “on top” of the bed feel. Again, there are softer and firmer versions available, as well.

The Tempur-Pedic LuxeBreeze is also a hybrid bed. Thanks to its plush memory foam, it has that classic, slow-moving feel that gets a little softer and conforms to your body as you lay on the bed. Although both mattresses are a 6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, I would say you get more sinkage out of the LuxeBreeze. In other words, if you prefer to feel cradled and sink inside your mattress, this might be the better pick of the two.

How Does The Construction Differ?

Stearns & Foster vs Tempur-Pedic Comparing Mattress Performance

Temperature

Several factors contribute to a mattress’s cooling ability. First and foremost, I consider its construction. Since both mattresses feature layers of pocketed coils, there’s plenty of room for air to flow through them and keep them cool.

After laying on each for a few minutes and measuring how much heat each one trapped, I found that both beds are great at regulating temperature. The Lux Estate features a ventilated coil layer, cool-to-the-touch cover, and air vents on the sides. In action, I found it very cool to sleep on, doing a fantastic job at dissipating heat.

I also found that the Tempur-Pedic had equally great cooling abilities, thanks to its SmartClimate Dual cover, Phase Change Material layer, and breathable comfort foam topper. When combined, these materials produce a supremely cooling structure that could be great for hot sleepers.

Motion Isolation

I’ve noticed a lot of mattresses with springs typically come with lots of bounce, and the Lux Estate and Tempur-Pedic are no exception. Both mattresses are highly responsive, meaning it’s simple to change sleeping positions and get in and out of bed. However, if you sleep with a restless partner or pet, you might feel some of their movements on your side of the bed.

To ensure that I’m not just speaking from my experience, I perform a few tests to determine if a bed is good at isolating motion. One of those tests consists of dropping a steel ball from various heights and measuring the disturbance it causes using a seismometer.

Overall, I think the Lux Estate did a better job of isolating motion than the Tempur-Pedic. Based on its test results, you might feel your partner get in and out of bed a little bit, but their movements shouldn’t impact your side of the mattress too much if they tend to move around at night.

Edge Support

When testing the edge support on both mattresses, I didn’t find much sinkage as I sat on the edge of these beds. During testing, I felt extremely supported, even when I moved toward the edge of the bed. However, when I sat near the edges and on the corners, I sank a little through the pillow top. It wasn’t enough to make me feel like I was falling off, but it still pales compared to other mattresses with stellar edge support.

Similarly, the LuxeBreeze’s layer of double-stacked innerspring coils kept me from falling off the bed when I rolled near the edge. I also felt like the LuxeBreeze did a better job supporting me when I sat on the edge and corners of the mattress. Overall, I would say the Tempur LuxeBreeze is a better option for seniors and folks with mobility issues who rely on sturdy edge support to help them get up in the morning.

Pressure Relief

The Stearns & Foster outperformed the Tempur-Pedic LuxeBreeze on our pressure map test, where we lay on a specialized mat to measure how much pressure the materials put on different body parts. The mat then creates a graphic or “map” of the body using color-coded imagery. Areas with minimal pressure buildup are blue and green, and areas with more buildup are yellow and red.

As you can see on the pressure map below, the Lux Estate mattress is a home run for back sleepers. There was only a tiny bit of green in my hips, meaning this bed is a strong choice for sleepers struggling with back pain. However, I saw a bit of yellow on my shoulders while on my side. Based on this, I wouldn’t recommend this mattress to strict side sleepers or side sleepers with sensitive joints.

Pain Relief

The results of the pressure relief test can indicate whether these mattresses aid in reducing pain in specific areas. I think the Stearns & Foster and Tempur-Pedic are good options for most back sleepers. However, side sleepers, especially those with shoulder pain, should go with one of our best mattresses for side sleepers.

Durability

I would say the Tempur-Pedic is neck and neck with the Lux Estate in terms of durability. Since both beds are constructed with coils, I think they are less likely to sag prematurely. They also feature high-quality Tempur-Pedic materials, such as TEMPUR-Indulge™ Memory Foam and SmartClimate Dual covers. These materials should hold up well for most sleepers, and I would have no problem recommending either mattress to heavier folks, as these individuals will be more prone to sagging over time.

Stearns & Foster Customer Service Rating

  • Great: I tested out Stearns & Foster’s customer service by utilizing the chat feature on their website. I was met with a chatbot who was able to provide some helpful answers, but not able to provide more customized answers to specific questions. I wasn’t given the option to speak to a live agent, so that was frustrating. However, I still think they have great customer service because Stearns & Foster offers the option for email and phone communication, as well.  Customer support is offered from 9:00am to 9:00pm Monday through Friday, and from 9:00am to 6:00pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Tempur-Pedic Customer Service Rating

  • Great: I was impressed with Tempur-Pedic’s customer service. The online chat feature does start out with automatic responses, but they’re quite detailed and capable of answering frequently asked questions. You can also easily switch the chat to a live agent if you require further information. They also have customer support and sleep experts available by phone, which is a plus.

Our Review Process

Our Sleepopolis reviewers personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress.
