Similarities
Before we dive into the differences between these two mattresses, let’s first chat about their similarities. That way, their unique features will really stand out once we get to them!
- All-Foam Constructions – Both the LuxeAdapt and Tuft & Needle mattresses are built entirely of foam. Though the way they use foam leads to two totally distinct feels (which we’ll explore more below), neither of these models employ springs or pocketed coils.
- Pressure Relief – In that vein, these mattresses are also designed with pressure relief in mind, so could provide some nice support to those in need of a little cushiony comfort at the shoulders, hips, or lower back.
What are These Mattresses Made of?
Now that we’ve got the similarities all good and sorted, let’s get into the characteristics that set these beds apart! Below, I’m going to walk through each bed’s construction, but I’d also encourage you to check out my full reviews of the Tempur-Pedic LuxeAdapt and Tuft & Needle mattresses to get an even deeper understanding of their respective designs.
Tempur-Pedic LuxeAdapt
Cover – Composed of a Phase Change Material, the cover of the Tempur-Pedic LuxeAdapt is literally cool to the touch. This helps to regulate temperatures throughout the night (and could help mitigate some of the overheating properties of the memory foam layers below).
Comfort – The comfort layer features the brand’s special Tempur-ES foam, which has an incredibly slow response to pressure. This material is a type of memory foam, meaning it’s super gentle and will to contour to the curves of your body, resulting in some deep pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. This could be an especially great feel for side sleepers, who need a bit of sink as they dig into the mattress.
Contour – Directly below the comfort layer, you’ll find a contour layer comprised of the brand’s Tempur-APR+ foam, another TempurPedic memory foam. This material has a slightly tighter cell structure than the ES foam above, but still provides plenty of pressure-relieving body contouring.
Support – To bolster the gentle memory foam layers up top, Tempur-Pedic has slipped in a support section of high-density poly foam. The layer gives the bed some shape and helps with its overall durability.
Thoughts – The combination of foam layers here makes me think this is going to be a super gentle structure, which could be a fantastic feel for side sleepers looking for deep pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Tuft & Needle
Cover – The cover of the T&N is made of polyester, a thin material that’s great for breathability and temperature regulation.
Comfort – The comfort layer is comprised of 3” of the brand’s proprietary poly foam, which has a quick response to pressure for excellent mobility and bounce. Kicking things off with such a lively layer will ensure that you stay more “on top” of the bed than in it. I should also add that there’s a bit of cooling gel inside this section to prevent overheating.
Support – Rounding things out is a 7” base layer of high-density poly foam. This section is meant to give the mattress its shape and to help keep the sleeper positioned on top of the structure. A major difference between the T&N and LuxeAdapt mattresses is the absence of a transition layer in the former, so heavier folks might be susceptible to sinking straight through its comfort layer and into this super firm base.
Thoughts – The T&N mattress has a much simpler (and livelier) construction than the LuxeAdapt, so may lend itself better to strict back or combo sleepers.
Tempur-Pedic LuxeAdapt vs. Tuft & Needle
Though it’s easy (read: convenient) to group all-foam mattresses together, I’m pretty struck by just how dissimilar these two foamy beds are. Yes, both models are concerned with comfort and pressure relief, but the ways in which they get there truly couldn’t be more different.
First and foremost, the most intriguing split to me is over the complexities of their respective designs. The LuxeAdapt goes for a diverse, balanced approach that incorporates an array of different materials into its construction while the T&N goes for something much, much simpler. Therefore, the former has a much gentler vibe than the latter, endearing it more to side sleepers or those after deep pressure relief.
Though its design may not make for the softest structure in the world, the T&N does benefit from a lively comfort layer that could make it a great fit for combo sleepers. This mobility could be crucial for folks who move around a lot at night, or simply need to shift positions in search of comfort. The cooling gel in this top layer is a nice addition as well, and is certainly a bonus over the LuxeAdapt.
And while we’ll go over a full cost breakdown at the end of this comparison, I do think it’s worth noting that there’s a pretty significant price gap between the mattresses, which really comes down to the stuff going on in their constructions. For reference, the LuxeAdapt starts at $3,199 and the T&N starts at $350, which could spell a huge difference for value shoppers.

What do These Mattresses Feel Like?
After peeking underneath the covers of these mattresses, it’s time to see how their designs impact their respective feels. Since feel is such a subjective matter, I’m going to do my best to explore it with a combination of personal experience, outside input, and some good ol’ fashioned objective testing!
Every sleeper is going to experience feel factors like pressure relief and firmness a little differently (depending on body shape, size, and weight), so I always invite a few coworkers to test out the beds with me. Once we’ve all stretched out on the mattresses, we share our thoughts, and then average together any rankings or ratings we came up with.
Tempur-Pedic LuxeAdapt
We were a bit all over the place with this one, but we all landed within the 4-6 range, which tells me this bed is pretty darn soft (especially when compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness).
I personally gave the bed a 5 as I found its combination of gentle foams to make for an incredibly plush structure. The thick top layers of memory foam are especially soft and made me feel as though I was sinking deeply into the bed as soon as I laid down. This intense body-contouring brought some excellent pressure relief to my shoulders and hips, so I think strict side sleepers could find a lot to love on the LuxeAdapt. On the flip side, back and stomach sleepers may find the softness to be detrimental to their spinal alignment.
In general, you’re likely to feel more “in” this bed than “on top” of it, with very little bounce and mobility. Strict position sleepers may not be bothered by this, but combo sleepers who need to move around and change positions could find this to be a big problem.
Tuft & Needle
In general, we found the Tuft & Needle to be much firmer than the LuxeAdapt, with our average rating rounding out to 7.5/10. This is definitely on the firm side of things, and marks a significant difference between the beds.
The T&N got a 7.5 from me as I found its two-layer design of bouncy, supportive foams made for a super firm vibe. Since you’re likely to sink quickly through the comfort layer, you’ll mostly be interacting with the foundation, which is pretty sturdy in my opinion. Given this feel, I think the Tuft & Needle would probably work best for back or stomach sleepers who need firm support at the lumbar region for healthy spinal alignment. The bed’s buoyant lift could also make it a good pick for combo sleepers.
Though I experienced some nice comfort and relief on my back and stomach, I can’t really say that translated to my side. In the lateral position, I could feel my shoulders and hips digging into the mattress, which made for some tension at these spots.
Other Models
So, we’ve got a solid grasp on what’s going on with the Tempur-Pedic LuxeAdapt and Tuft & Needle mattresses… but what about the other beds in their respective brands’ product lines? To find out, I’m going to compare and contrast them to a few of their mattress siblings.
Tuft & Needle Mint
- The Mint is essentially a souped-up version of the original T&N, complete with an added transition layer for a bit more plushness.
- That being said, the bed is much softer than the original T&N, landing at about a 6/10 on the firmness scale.
- For this reason, I’d recommend it for any sleepers who doze on their side at night.
- Pricewise, it’s more expensive than the T&N, coming it at $895 for a Queen.

Which is Better Tempur-Pedic or Tuft & Needle
Well folks, we’ve reached the end of this comparison! We’ve gone over each bed’s design and talked about their respective feels, all the while comparing and contrasting the characteristics that make them unique. Now, it’s time to wrap things up with a few final thoughts.

Tuft & Needle vs Tempur-Pedic
Sizing up the Tempur-Pedic LuxeAdapt and Tuft & Needle models was actually super easy because they’re so different. Like, sooo different. Yes, they’re both made entirely of foam, but their constructions lend themselves to two totally distinct feels, with the LuxeAdapt being ultra plush and the T&N being ultra firm.
The LuxeAdapt is a luxurious model, built as it is with thick top layers of memory foam. Side sleepers will likely enjoy this vibe the most, as they’ll sink in for some fantastic pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. It’s an expensive bed (starting at $3,199), but the price could be worth it for folks looking to seriously upgrade their sleep game. Drawbacks here are that there’s no bounce and very little mobility, so combo sleepers who need to move around at night will fare better on the T&N.
Speaking of the Tuft & Needle, it’s got a much more straightforward design, with just two layers of bouncy, supportive foam. It’s simple, but this construction could do a lot for back and stomach sleepers, who will get enough pressure relief from the comfort layer, but not so much that it’ll throw their spines out of alignment. Side sleepers, on the other hand, may find the structure to be too firm for their tastes. Perhaps one of the biggest pluses for the T&N is its pricepoint — at a starting cost of $350, this is definitely the value buy, here.

Tuft & Needle
- Considering how firm and supportive it is, I think the Tuft & Needle could be great for back and stomach sleepers.
- It’s also much less expensive than the LuxeAdapt, so could work for those on a tighter budget.
