Spills, sweat, and the occasional midnight mishap can happen, but they don’t have to shorten the lifespan of your mattress. A waterproof mattress protector acts as a sanitary knight in shining armor, defending your mattress against moisture and messes. However, with multiple knights out there, it can be tricky to separate the dependable defenders from the unreliable jesters.

That’s where this guide comes in.

Along with my fellow sleep product testers, I’ve put numerous waterproof mattress protectors through their paces to find the ones that stand out. The mattress protectors that made it onto this list offer reliable protection while being comfortable and breathable.

Over the past year, our team helped more than 15,000 people find the best mattresses and accessories to meet their needs. Since 2014, we’ve guided over 60,000 sleepers toward products that improve their rest. Collectively, our certified sleep science coaches have tested more than 300 mattresses and accessories in our studio, applying the same rigorous process to every protector featured here.

I also collaborated with our Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, to ensure our recommendations go beyond studio tests and reflect the latest medical insights. His expertise ensures that our methodology and final picks align with what sleep science says is best for your health.

Read on to see which waterproof mattress protectors made it to the top.

Our Top Pick

The Saatva Waterproof Mattress Protector is our top pick, thanks to its sturdy construction, snug fit, and exceptional water-repelling capabilities. Even after pouring a quarter of a coffee mug full of water onto it, the mattress underneath didn’t get wet at all. It is also machine-washable and easy to care for. Overall, the Saatva protector is a durable, well-made option that should be a solid fit for many sleepers.

What I Looked for in the Best Waterproof Mattress Protectors

Waterproof mattress protectors should repel water, fit snugly around your mattress, and be durable enough to handle regular use and multiple washes. My fellow product testers and I prioritized the following categories when evaluating these mattress protectors using our rigorous review methodology.

  • Materials: We rated each protector’s materials based on how well they protected against spills and how well-constructed they felt. The mattress protectors on this list effectively repelled water during testing and felt well-made and durable.
  • Care: Care refers to how easy it is to wash, maintain, and refresh these mattress protectors. If you anticipate a lot of spills and messes, it’s important to have something easy to clean. These picks are machine-washable and easy to care for.
  • Experience: We judge experience based on each waterproof mattress protector’s user-friendliness and how detectable it is beneath the sheets. A solid mattress protector should be easy to fit onto the mattress and shouldn’t be noisy or noticeable when sleeping and moving around on the bed.

The best waterproof mattress protector should provide a perfect fit for your mattress, protecting it from spills and messes. However, we also believe that the best waterproof mattress protector should seamlessly integrate with the rest of your bedding, so your fitted sheets don’t slip and slide. The Saatva Waterproof Mattress Protector delivers on every front, earning a 4.5 out of 5 or higher in the materials, experience, and care categories.

Our in-house product tester was immediately impressed by how well it fit on the queen-sized mattress in our Charlotte, NC, studio. She awarded it a perfect 5 out of 5 in the materials category because of how snugly it fit around the bed and how it went undetected beneath the fitted sheet while lying on it.

“It fits snugly on the mattress without stretching, tearing, or looking overly thin,” our tester said. “There is a nice rubber lining by the elastic that prevents it from slipping and bunching up under the sheets, which I appreciate.”

Most importantly, though, it did a great job of preventing the mattress from getting wet when she spilled water on it. She gave it a 4.5 out of 5 in the experience category because the mattress stayed completely dry after rolling off the Saatva protector.

“I was impressed that the mattress stayed completely dry even after I dumped a good bit of water on the protector,” she said. “However, I would take off half a point because it makes the bed feel a little firmer when it’s on. It’s not too noticeable, but you can feel a slight difference.”

Rounding out this impressive waterproof mattress protector is another perfect 5 out of 5 in the care category. The Saatva Waterproof Mattress Protector is washer and dryer-compatible, which is especially helpful if you have a child who frequently makes messes on their bed.

The only critique our product tester had for this mattress protector was its price, awarding it an average 3 out of 5 in this category. At $195, it’s not exactly a steal of a deal, but you get a high-quality and dependable product that’s hard to beat.

Adding a (literal) new layer to your mattress can feel daunting if you’re a hot sleeper. If you fall into this category, you have the unique challenge of finding a mattress protector that protects your bed without making it too stuffy for comfort. Fortunately, the Bear GlacioTex Protector features cool-to-the-touch fibers to protect your mattress and your sanity. Product tester Riley Otis gave this cooling mattress protector a perfect 5 out of 5 in the materials, experience, and care categories.

After unboxing the Bear GlacioTex Protector, Riley immediately enveloped a mattress in our Charlotte, NC, studio and evaluated its materials for fit, feel, and waterproofing. During testing, she was wowed by all three and awarded the GlacioTex Protector a perfect 5 out of 5 in materials and experience.

“This is definitely a deep-pocket waterproof protector,” Riley said. “I loved how it went on the mattress without hassle. If you have a tall mattress, this should offer more than enough coverage. It felt cool to the touch and repelled the water I spilled on it. Overall, this waterproof protector lived up to my expectations.”

Riley also gave it another perfect 5-star score in the care category. She appreciated that the care instructions were easy to follow and available online.

“According to the instructions on the Casper website, it can be machine-washed on cold or warm settings, and it can be dried in a dryer on low heat,” Riley said. “It doesn’t get much better than that if you anticipate a spill here and there.”

While the Bear GlacioTex Protector performed well across the board, Riley critiqued its price and trial. At $250 for a queen-sized protector before discounts, she felt that it might be out of budget for many shoppers. Additionally, she would have preferred to see a more extensive trial period than 30 days for the investment.

Leesa Waterproof Mattress Protector – Best Cheap Waterproof Mattress Protector

Leesa Waterproof Mattress Protector

Leesa Waterproof Mattress Protector

This affordable mattress protector is extremely durable and resistant to spills, with deep pockets that help it stretch onto the mattress for a snug fit.

If you’re looking for a cheap waterproof bed protector that can hold up to spills and mishaps, Leesa has got you covered. At only $89 before any discounts, the Leesa Waterproof Mattress Protector is the most affordable option on this list. However, that doesn’t mean it is low quality. During testing, our in-house team gave it a 5 out of 5 or higher in the value, materials, and care categories.

Right away, the price of the Leesa Waterproof Mattress Protector seems too good to be true. The Leesa mattress pad is a steal at only $89 without any markdowns and often goes on sale for under $70. Better yet, our testers found that it was comparable to many of the more expensive options on this list. Naturally, this earns the Leesa protector a 5 out of 5 in the value category.

During testing, our team gave the Leesa Waterproof Mattress Protector another 5-star rating in the materials category. They praised its durability, deep-pocket fit, and waterproof protection.

“This mattress is strong and offers plenty of coverage for tall mattresses,” one of our testers said. “I tugged on it as hard as I could to get it to rip or stretch, and it didn’t budge. The waterproof layer beneath the terry-cloth top prevented the water I spilled on the bed from getting to the mattress itself.”

Our tester also appreciated that the Leesa Waterproof Mattress Protector is easy to care for, awarding it another 5 out of 5 in the care category.

“I love that you can wash this protector with your sheets,” she said. “The instructions say to machine wash cold and tumble dry low.”

The only complaint our in-house tester had with this mattress protector was that it made a crinkling sound beneath the sheets when moving on the bed. While she could not feel it under her, she noted that the noise might bother some sleepers, especially on shorter mattresses where it fits more loosely.

Shopping for bedding and accessories that fit your tall mattress can be challenging. However, when shopping for a waterproof mattress protector, fit is something you do not want to compromise on. If your mattress protector doesn’t fit around your mattress, it could leave parts exposed to spills and other messes. Fortunately, the Bear Protector’s deep-pocket fit should be enough to protect even the tallest mattresses from mishaps. During testing, we awarded this waterproof mattress protector a 4 out of 5 or higher in materials and experience.

During testing, Riley appreciated the stretchy and lightweight materials of the Bear Protector. She had no trouble wrapping this waterproof barrier around the mattress in our studio and awarded it a strong 4 out of 5 in the materials category.

“The sides are thin, expansive, and easy to stretch over the entire mattress,” Riley said. “They are thin, but the protective layer that covers the surface is soft and cozy.”

Riley also gave the Bear Protector a 4 out of 5 in our overall experience category. While she could feel the protector slightly beneath the sheets, it wasn’t enough to be disruptive. She appreciated its snug fit around the tall mattress in the studio.

“I can feel the mattress protector a little bit underneath me, but it isn’t enough to be disruptive,” Riley said. “It is a bit crinkly, but only when you push down on it. I think this is a solid mattress protector if you have a really tall mattress.”

Overall, Riley thought this protector was a solid choice for sleepers with tall mattresses. However, she thought the elastic band could be a bit thicker and more durable. While it stretched out over the mattress without any issues, the band itself felt a bit flimsy compared to the rest of the mattress protector.

Casper Waterproof Mattress Protector – Best Soft Waterproof Mattress Protector

Casper Mattress Protector

Able to fit any mattress up to 16″ deep, the Casper Waterproof Mattress Protector has a quilted top layer for added comfort, in addition to being waterproof and hypoallergenic.

The last thing your waterproof mattress protector should do is make you aware that it’s under your sheets. Thanks to the Casper Waterproof Mattress Protector’s soft surface, it blends in with the rest of your bedding and protects without distracting. During testing, Riley Otis gave the Casper protector a perfect 5 out of 5 in the materials, care, and experience categories.

Riley was immediately impressed by the soft top layer of the Casper Waterproof Mattress Protector. While it wasn’t plush like a pillow-top comfort layer or mattress topper, its fabric top layer blended well with the rest of the bedding on our test mattress. Riley gave it a 5 out of 5 in the materials category overall.

“The top is really soft and isn’t super noticeable underneath the sheets,” Riley said. “Underneath the soft fabric is a rubbery undercoating that creates a solid barrier against water and spills.”

Its soft materials and solid construction also helped it earn another 5 out of 5 in the overall experience category. Riley had no trouble encasing the test mattress in the Casper Waterproof Protector and didn’t notice any noise when lying on the bed and moving around. She also praised it for having deep pockets and being a perfect fit for the queen-sized mattress in our studio.

“After adding the sheets, I can’t feel the topper at all,” Riley said. “When I move around, I don’t even notice it’s there. It doesn’t move or bunch up when you shift. There is also no crinkling sound with this protector.”

Another benefit of the Casper mattress protector is that it is machine-washable. If you lose the packaging or label, you can find the instructions on the Casper website. The company suggests washing it on cold and air-drying this protector to avoid shrinkage. These easy-to-follow instructions earned it another perfect 5-star score in the care category.

The only drawback to note about the Casper Waterproof Mattress Protector is that it has no elastic band to secure it to the bed. That said, its deep-pocket construction encased our tall test mattress and didn’t budge during testing, but it is still something to keep in mind, especially if you are a particularly restless sleeper.

Other Mattress Protectors I Considered

While I am confident that our main list has a mattress protector for everyone, there were a couple of options that were difficult to leave off. Learn more about them below.

Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Protector

If a luxurious sleeping experience is what you’re after, the Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Protector comes with all the bells and whistles you could want. This waterproof mattress cover by Brooklyn Bedding features special cooling fibers and durable, hypoallergenic materials. However, I felt the Bear GlacioTex Protector was the better option for hot sleepers, especially when it is on sale.

Helix Waterproof Mattress Protector

During testing, I found that the Helix Waterproof Mattress Protector was a solid option for sleepers seeking a straightforward mattress encasement to defend against spills and mishaps. While lying on it, I couldn’t feel it beneath the sheets, and it didn’t bunch up or crinkle. However, I left it off the list because it felt thin compared to the other protectors we tested. If you get this mattress protector, I recommend washing it by itself so its zipper doesn’t snag and tear the fabric.

How We Picked and Tested These Waterproof Mattress Protectors

The best waterproof mattress protectors should be, well, waterproof. My fellow mattress testers and I evaluated every option on this list to see if they could deflect spills and encase the entire mattress without hassle. We also prioritized options that were easy to throw into the wash with other bedding and laundry.

Spill tests are one of many tools we use to determine the strengths and weaknesses of a mattress protector.

Materials

While you don’t sleep directly on a mattress protector, materials still matter. Aside from pouring water on each of these protectors to confirm that they are waterproof, we thoroughly tested each protector to see if the fabric was sturdy, flexible, and able to maintain its quality with regular use. We also prioritized options that omitted potentially harmful phthalates or VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that pose health risks and contribute to indoor air pollution.

As Dr. Dasgupta advises, “When shopping for a mattress protector, look for hypoallergenic materials that fight common allergens like dust mites, mildew, and mold. Additionally, you should make sure that it’s easy to clean and has good ventilation to prevent the buildup of moisture.”

Most reputable brands list this information on their packaging or website. The best waterproof mattress protectors felt strong, well-constructed, and secure without feeling bulky or awkward on the bed.

Care

If you anticipate your water-resistant mattress protector seeing many messes and spills, then you want something easy to refresh. All the options on our list are machine-washable, meaning you can throw them into the laundry by themselves or with similar bedding. We also included brands that provided their care instructions on their website, so you can still ensure you’re washing them correctly, even if you cut off the tag or throw away the packaging.

Experience

My fellow product testers and I rated the experience based on numerous factors, including noise, fit, and comfort. The top-performing waterproof mattress protectors should be undetectable.

For this reason, the protectors on this list are ones that made little to no noise when lying on top of them with bed sheets on the mattress. They also fit around the entire mattress without scrunching up or slipping off as we tossed and turned on the bed.

If the brand advertised additional features, such as cooling, we also tested them to ensure that they delivered on those promises.

Poor fitment can contribute to scrunching and bunching while you sleep on a mattress protector.

What to Consider When Buying a Waterproof Mattress Protector

Beyond waterproofing, a few extra details can make the difference between a protector that quietly does its job and one that is a hassle to use. Here are some additional considerations to keep in mind when shopping for a mattress protector.

Your Mattress

The right fit for your mattress goes beyond matching the length and width; you also need to consider depth. Mattresses come in various thicknesses, from slim 8-inch models to extra-tall Euro-tops that exceed 15 inches. If your waterproof mattress protector does not stretch far enough, it may not stay in place and could bunch up during the night.

Fortunately, many brands offer deep-pocket options, often accommodating mattresses that are 18 inches or taller. The correct pocket depth will help ensure a snug fit, prevent slipping, and maintain the protective barrier.

Trial and Warranty

Even a basic mattress protector is worth testing at home. Trial periods allow you to check comfort, fit, and noise level without risk. An easy return window can save you from being stuck with something that doesn’t fit your needs.

A solid warranty is also reassuring because protectors serve as long-term barriers against spills and wear. Extensive warranties are a good sign because they often signal brand confidence in the durability and waterproof performance of the protector.

Customer Reviews

Customer reviews can help you uncover details that product descriptions don’t immediately reveal. When possible, read feedback on the brand’s website and on third-party marketplaces (like Amazon). Pay attention to recurring complaints or compliments regarding fit, noise, comfort, and waterproof reliability. If numerous reviewers mention the same flaw, like corners slipping off or a plasticky crinkling noise, that’s usually a red flag.

Waterproof Mattress Protector FAQs

Do waterproof mattress protectors work for bedwetting?

Yes. When they fit properly, waterproof mattress protectors form a reliable barrier that prevents urine from soaking into the mattress.

Can mattress protectors defend against bed bugs?

Mattress protectors can protect against bed bugs, but the effectiveness depends on the type you choose. For protection against bed bugs, look for fully zippered encasement protectors that specifically state bed bug protection in the product description.

Are waterproof mattress protectors absorbent?

No, waterproof mattress protectors are typically designed to repel liquids and stop them from reaching the mattress, not to soak them up.

Are all mattress protectors waterproof?

Not necessarily. Some are only water-resistant or focus on dust and allergen protection, so always check the product details.
