Casper is one of the most recognizable names in the bed-in-a-box industry, and with The One, the brand has reimagined its flagship foam mattress. But how do you know it’s a good fit for you, based on specifics like your body type and preferred sleep style? The expert team here at Sleepopolis set out to answer that very question.

Our experienced mattress testers have reviewed more than 330 mattresses and helped over 15,600 people find the new mattress of their dreams, so we know a thing or two about recommending beds for specific sleep preferences. To pinpoint who exactly might benefit from Casper The One, we evaluated it based on our medically approved testing methodology at the Sleepopolis studio in Charlotte, NC. We also checked in with our chief medical advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, who helped ensure this Casper mattress review is in line with the latest in sleep science.

Based on The One’s performance, we think this slightly-firmer-than-average foam mattress is a great fit for back and side sleepers in light and average-weight classes. It also earned high marks for edge support and motion isolation, making it a good fit for couples. Read on to see if it’s the right new mattress for you.

The Casper Original is an all-foam mattress that is a great option for back sleepers who want a balance of support and pressure relief. Combination sleepers will appreciate this mattress’s responsiveness, which makes it easy to change positions throughout the night. This mattress is also a good choice for couples due to its responsiveness and ability to isolate motion. Learn more in our video review.

What our tester says:

“It’s worth mentioning the Casper is zoned for support. So, it uses firmer foams at the lower back for extra lift, and softer foams at the shoulders for extra cushion around pressure points. This combo is nice for sleepers suffering from lower back or shoulder pain, since it helps keep the spine in a healthy alignment without creating stiffness in the shoulder area.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

Casper The One Mattress Overview

Casper The One Mattress is an 11-inch foam mattress with a simple construction. Three foam layers combine to give The One a slightly firmer feel, with continuous, responsive support. While the lack of coils means it’s not particularly springy, our testers nevertheless found it relatively easy to move around. The One may be made entirely of polyurethane and memory foam layers, but it delivers a lot of lift that gives it more of an “on top” sensation.

During our rigorous testing methodology, the mattress did a great job of supporting our testers in the back- and side-sleeping positions, and it was a good fit for lightweight stomach sleepers as well. But we’d caution average and heavyweight stomach sleepers to look elsewhere since The One lacks the support necessary for proper hip elevation and back pain prevention if you weigh more than 130 pounds. Heavyweight sleepers in general will be better off with a mattress specifically designed to accommodate more weight.

Casper The One Value

Value isn’t limited to the cost of a mattress alone. It considers the bigger picture, from the material quality to the overall performance to the expected lifespan. That gives you a better sense of what your money really gets you. The One is priced on the affordable end of the price spectrum, with a queen size retailing for $999 before any discounts. Casper offers regular sales throughout the year, and at the time of writing, The One in a queen size was $799. Even the largest size, a California king, was affordably priced at $1,119. If you’re a light or medium-weight back or side sleeper shopping on a budget, this is a good buy.

Casper offers a 100-night sleep trial and backs The One with a 10-year limited warranty. That’s pretty typical in the industry, and it should give you enough time to test the mattress from the comfort of your own home. All-foam mattresses don’t usually offer the longevity of their hybrid counterparts, simply because they lack the durability of coils or innersprings. Based on its materials and construction, we anticipate The One to last at least seven to 10 years. Given the price point, that’s reasonable.

What Is the Casper The One Made Of?

For a better understanding of a mattress’s construction, our sleep experts cut into the side. That lets us see the layers for ourselves. On top, the 11-inch Casper The One has a layer of blue foam that feels soft and fluffy, with a quick response to pressure. Below is a dense, spongy layer of light yellow foam that responds much more slowly to pressure. The third and thickest layer is high-density polyfoam.

While Casper notes that most of its foams are CertiPur-US certified, it doesn’t specify that for The One. If you’re interested in a comparable mattress made with foams that do not contain ozone depleters, PBDE flame retardants, heavy metals, formaldehyde, or phthalates, as well as those that have low VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions, Nectar and DreamCloud have models worth considering.

Cover – The One has a soft knit cover that feels temperature neutral.

Comfort Layer This layer of open-cell polyurethane foam is designed to minimize heat retention.

Comfort LayerThe memory foam layer is designed for contouring and pressure relief.

Support Layer – This layer of high-density polyurethane foam gives the mattress its support.

Casper The One Mattress Firmness

Mattress firmness level is always personal. What feels soft or firm to you might feel completely different to someone else, and that’s because body types and preferred sleep positions vary. Mattress brands often offer a general idea of firmness with firmness scales, which rank mattresses from 1 to 10 (one is the softest, 10 is the firmest). A mattress with a rating of 6.5 is considered a true medium firm.

Casper 2020 Firmness

Our tester, Riley Otis, rated the Casper The One a 7 on the firmness scale. She found it slightly firmer than medium-firm, with a very balanced feel that worked well for back, side, and stomach sleeping. Riley weighs less than 130 pounds, and mattresses tend to feel firmer for her. Average-weight sleepers will likely find The One leans a little firm as well, and they can expect comfortable contouring in the side and back sleep positions. But stomach sleepers in this weight class, along with heavyweight sleepers in any position, will likely find they sink too far into The One to maintain proper spinal alignment.

Casper The One Mattress Performance

While construction and firmness are one piece of the puzzle, it’s important to consider other factors for a well-rounded sense of how an online mattress might perform. Our tester Riley put The One through a series of tests to assess its pressure relief, motion isolation, responsiveness, cooling, and edge support. Overall, the mattress did quite well, with high marks across the board.

Casper The One Pressure Relief Performance

Memory foam is one of the best materials for contouring pressure points and relieving tension, according to Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta. Since The One’s second layer is made with memory foam, we anticipated a high score here.

Riley spent several minutes resting on both her back and her side, paying close attention to areas in which the mattress relieved or built pressure. Again, as a lightweight sleeper, Riley perceives most mattresses to be firmer and generally experiences much less sinkage. She scored The One an average score of 4.5 for its pressure relief overall. On her side, she gave the mattress 4 stars. While she says she was quite comfortable, with an aligned spine and excellent cushioning at her hip, she didn’t notice much pressure relief at her shoulder. “I could see side sleepers with sensitive joints needing more contouring,” she said. Average-weight side sleepers should sink in a little more and find The One soft enough to contour a little better.

The situation improved when Riley moved to her back. “It provides the perfect combination of pressure relief and support,” she said. She noted a bit of sinkage in the lower body, but she said it was very subtle and struck a great balance between cushioning and lift. “My spine felt super straight, yet I can still snuggle into the cozy layers,” she added. Riley gave The One 5 stars for pressure relief in this position. Back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds will likely find the mattress is just as comfortable, but folks over 230 pounds will do better on a mattress for heavy sleepers.

Casper The One Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is a really important feature in a mattress for those who share the bed with a partner. It references how well the materials absorb movement on impact, which is what prevents sleep disturbances on one side of the bed when a bed partner tosses and turns on the other. Dr. Raj Dasgupta notes that high motion isolation can also indicate better material quality and a sturdy construction. The One excelled in this category, with an overall score of 5 stars out of 5.

A woman looking at a bin full of water on top of a Casper The One mattress.

During the first test, we placed a basin of water on one side of the bed. Then, our tester climbed into bed and switched between sleeping positions on the other side. We observed how this movement affected the water. Since memory foam generally does a good job of isolating motion, we weren’t surprised when the water movement was limited to gently swaying when Riley got into bed. The surface of the water rippled slightly when she alternated between sleep positions, but there was no splashing at all. That earned The One a full 5 stars.

During the second test, we replaced the basin with a human. Riley lay on the other side of the mattress with her eyes closed and assessed how much movement she could feel as her partner got on and off the bed and generally moved around. “As my testing partner moved next to me, I didn’t feel their motion at all,” she said. “I could feel a slight adjustment in pressure when she got on and off the bed, but I don’t think it would wake anyone up.” Riley said she would definitely recommend this bed to couples worrying about motion transfer. She gave the mattress 5 stars again.

Casper The One Responsiveness

If you’re the type of sleeper who starts on their side only to wake up on their back or stomach, a mattress with quick response is a priority. It means the materials in the bed return to their original shape quickly once pressure is removed — like when you roll over. Soft foams, and memory foams especially, tend to mold closely to the body. It’s a sensation that appeals to some people, but it can take time for these materials to return to their original state. If you move a lot in the night, a mattress with slow response time can hinder your ability to move comfortably and affect your sleep quality. While The One has no springs in its all-foam construction, it performed better than expected in this category. It averaged 4 stars.

Riley tested the mattress by moving from her back to her side to her stomach and assessing how much effort it required. She paid attention to any bounce and whether or not the layers in The One impeded her ability to switch positions. “Since this bed leans slightly firmer, it’s relatively easy to move from one position to the next,” she said. But the lack of coils and overall lack of buoyancy in the comfort layers mean the bed itself doesn’t assist you when you move. Riley gave the mattress 4 stars for this test.

Test two involved putting a 53-pound kettlebell in the center of the mattress for seven seconds and then lifting it up. Riley used a stopwatch to time how long it took the layers to bounce back into shape. It took The One 1.1 seconds, which is on the slower side and worthy of 3 stars.

In the third test, Riley placed the same kettlebell in the center of the mattress again. This time, she used a ruler to measure how far it sank. At 3.5 inches, The One falls into the “moderate sinkage” category. That means most sleepers can expect moderate cushioning without deep contouring.

For our last test in this category, Riley dropped a 25-pound steel ball from a 6-foot height onto the mattress. She used a yardstick on the wall to measure the height of its bounce, which was a mere 6 inches. That means The One has low bounce.

A kettlebell resting on top of a Casper The One mattress.

Casper The One Cooling

It’s normal for body temperature to fluctuate at night, but certain mattress materials can make this worse. Dr. Raj Dasgupta says that hybrid mattresses tend to offer a cooler sleep experience because their coil systems allow for more airflow. But despite The One’s all-foam construction, it earned a respectable 4 stars out of 5 for this category.

Our tester Riley used a thermal gun to take the surface temperature of the mattress before and after she lay on it for five minutes. The initial reading was 69.3 degrees. The second reading was 75.4. This is a 6.1-degree increase, which we consider good cooling. An increase of less than 5 degrees is a sign of excellent cooling, while 10 to 15 degrees is decent. Above 15 degrees is considered poor.

When Riley lay on the mattress for five minutes, she didn’t notice it heating up in any significant way. She said she didn’t feel cooled by The One, but it didn’t contribute to overheating, either.

Before she started the thermal gun test, Riley also assessed The One’s temperature by touch. She said that the soft knit cover didn’t feel cool to the touch, but neither did it feel warm.

Casper The One Edge Support

Edge support is another feature that’s important for people who share the bed. When a mattress has strong edge support, it means the perimeter is just as stable and supportive as the center. For couples looking to maximize their sleep space or anyone with mobility issues that make getting in and out of bed challenging, it’s important that a mattress has strong edges. All-foam mattresses aren’t generally known for this feature, but The One surprised us again. It earned an overall score of 4.4 stars out of 5.

We performed an objective test using three stacks of weighted plates: a 99-pound stack, a 154-pound stack, and a 198-pound stack. Our testers placed these stacks right on the edge of the bed and used a ruler to measure how far the layers collapsed. From lightest to heaviest, The One sank 3 inches, 4 inches, and 6 inches. We gave the mattress an average rating of 4 stars for this test.

In the second test, Riley sat on the side of The One with her feet on the floor. She moved from a seated position to standing and back to sitting again, paying attention to how supported she felt and whether it was necessary to use her hands for assistance. Riley was impressed — she said she was able to sit directly on the edge and still felt lifted and supported. “There was some sinkage from the top layers, which I expected, but the base layer kept me secure.” She gave the mattress 5 stars.

Next, Riley lay along the edge of the mattress to assess its stability. “Regardless of which position I was in, the edge felt just as supportive as the center,” she said. She didn’t get the sensation that she was going to roll off, and she adds that she’d feel comfortable sleeping near the edge all night. Riley gave the mattress another 5 stars for this test.

Casper The One Mattress Performance for Couples

Couples usually benefit from a mattress that responds quickly, prevents overheating, isolates motion, and has strong edge support. The Casper The One mattress earned an average of 4.3 stars in these categories, so it’s a pretty solid contender for couples who like a slightly firmer all-foam bed. The 5-star motion isolation alone suggests this is a good bed for co-sleepers worried about waking each other up. Again, we’d recommend it for couples in light and medium-weight categories.

Other Performance Factors to Consider

The Sleepopolis team assessed The One in a few additional categories for the most well-rounded picture of its performance.

Sex

The best mattress for sex tends to earn high marks for responsiveness, cooling, and edge support. A fast response time keeps couples from feeling stuck in the bed, which can take them out of the moment. Breathability helps minimize heat retention to keep things steamy in the right way, while strong edges keep couples secure no matter where they roam on the bed.

The Casper The One mattress earned 4 stars for responsiveness, 4 stars for cooling, and 4.4 stars for edge support, giving it an average of 4.1 stars in this category. That makes it a pretty solid choice for sexually active couples.

Noise

While coils and innersprings can be prone to squeaking and creaking, even all-foam beds can be surprisingly noisy. Often, it’s the sound of foam hissing as air is released when the material is under pressure. Riley tested noise on The One by jumping up and down, rolling around, and pressing firmly on the surface at different points. No matter what she did, the mattress stayed silent, so she gave it 5 stars. If you’re a light sleeper, you shouldn’t be disturbed on The One, even if you move around.

Adjustable Base Compatibility

Since adjustable bases are pretty popular, we always assess a mattress’s compatibility with them. Riley elevated the head and foot of The One and placed the mattress in the zero-gravity preset to evaluate how well it moved. This is actually where The One didn’t impress. While it conforms reasonably well with someone on the bed, the foot of the bed lifts off the bed frame when the bed is empty. Riley gave the mattress 3 stars for this test. If you’re looking for a mattress that works well with an adjustable base, be mindful that some gapping between the mattress and the frame could be an issue with The One.

Durability

While we don’t have a crystal ball that tells us precisely how long a new mattress might last, we can make an educated guess based on material quality, the support layer, edge support, and the warranty. High-quality materials always outperform low-quality materials because they’re less likely to deteriorate over time. A mattress with strong support throughout and around the edge resists premature sagging. And the warranty is an indication of how long a company expects its product to perform.

Hybrid mattresses are usually more durable than all-foam mattresses because of their innerspring coil systems, but the Casper impressed us with its edge support and high-density support layer. It’s reasonable to expect it to last between 7 and 10 years, which aligns with the company’s 10-year limited warranty.

Casper The One Sleeping Position and Body Weight

Both your body type and sleeping position impact how a mattress will feel and perform. That’s why lightweight stomach sleepers have very different mattress needs than heavyweight side sleepers. It all comes down to how much weight is being placed on different parts of the body.

Based on The One’s firmness and components, here’s how we expect the mattress to perform for sleepers in different weight classes on their back, side, and stomach.

Before we dive into our recommendations, though, we want to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 230 pounds).

As a general takeaway, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average-weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average-weight sleepers and sink into the mattress more. As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers likely need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.

Is the Casper The One a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?

  • Light Back Sleepers – The One should accommodate these sleepers well. It has a very balanced feel that delivers support and cushioning in the lower back and neck.
  • Light Side Sleepers – This group of sleepers should feel lifted and gently cradled, as long as they don’t have sensitive shoulders.
  • Light Stomach Sleepers The One has enough support and lift to maintain a neutral spine for these sleepers.

Is the Casper The One a Good Mattress for Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 pounds)?

  • Average-Weight Back Sleepers – This group might sink in a little more, but should get plenty of spinal alignment and contouring in the low back.
  • Average-Weight Side Sleepers – The One should be comfortable for these sleepers, who will sink in a touch more for cushioning around the hips and shoulders without compromising a straight spine.
  • Average-Weight Stomach Sleepers – This group will likely experience hip sinkage that pulls the spine out of alignment, so we wouldn’t recommend it.

Is the Casper The One a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 230 pounds)?

  • Heavy Back Sleepers – Given the height and all-foam construction, we don’t recommend The One for heavyweight sleepers in any sleeping position. The best mattresses for heavy sleepers are specifically designed with more resilience and support to accommodate more weight.
  • Heavy Side Sleepers – See above.
  • Heavy Stomach Sleepers – See above.

My Final Thoughts About the Casper The One Mattress

Still wondering whether The One is a good fit for you? Here’s who we think the mattress is best for — and who should steer clear.

Who I Recommend the Casper The One Mattress For

  • Lightweight sleepers in any position should find this slightly firmer mattress keeps them comfortably supported.
  • Couples in light and average-weight classes looking for excellent motion isolation, responsiveness, edge support, and cooling should fare well.
  • Budget shoppers who are shopping on a tight budget can expect good value with The One.
  • Light and average-weight combination sleepers should find this mattress easy to switch positions without feeling stuck.

Who I Don’t Recommend the Casper The One Mattress For

  • Heavyweight sleepers just won’t get the support they need to keep a straight spine and will likely bottom out.
  • Very hot sleepers who benefit from active cooling technology could find they get too warm on this bed.

Casper The One vs. DreamCloud

The One isn’t the only affordable foam mattress on the market. Here’s how it compares to the flagship DreamCloud, a popular memory foam model.

Casper The One vs DreamCloud Classic

The DreamCloud is a 12-inch memory foam mattress with strong support for back and stomach sleepers. It has a firmer feel than The One, so we don’t think it’s good for side sleepers, even in the lightweight category. The DreamCloud performed well for motion isolation, responsiveness, edge support, and cooling, making it a great option for couples.

  • Price: Both mattresses are affordably priced, but the DreamCloud is slightly less expensive. A queen size is $649, saving you $150.
  • Sleeping position: The DreamCloud is slightly firmer than The One — 7.5 compared to 7 on the firmness scale — and we think it’s a great fit for average-weight back and stomach sleepers. The One is a better option for lightweight sleepers.
  • Cooling: Both mattresses performed better than expected for their cooling ability, with The One measuring a slightly lower temperature increase during our test.
  • Body weight: Both mattresses have a three-layer foam construction, but the 12-inch DreamCloud is a little better for heavy sleepers. Still, we wouldn’t recommend it for side or stomach sleepers in this weight category.

I have purchased 5 different Dreamcloud mattresses over the years and never once disappointed. Always fast shipping. Fantastic pricing. But by far the best feature is the quality of the Dreamcloud mattress. Also very impressed with the free bedding (sheets) that came with my recent two purchases. Don’t change what you are doing/offering. It’s perfect in every way.

Other Models From Casper

The One isn’t the only mattress Casper offers. The Snow is the brand’s cooling hybrid. Let’s compare both models.

Casper The One vs Casper Snow Hybrid

There are a lot of differences between The One and the Casper Snow Hybrid. The latter is a 12-inch mattress with five layers, and it’s specifically designed with active cooling technology. That includes the brand’s HeatDelete Bands, which function as thermal channels to eliminate excess heat. The Snow also has zoned support for more firmness in the center of the bed. It has a softer feel that works well for side sleepers, but the zoned support should also accommodate most back sleepers.

  • Price: The Snow has more upgrades, but they come at a cost. A queen-size Snow is $2,595 before discounts, compared to $999 for The One.
  • Sleeping position: We think the softer feel of the Snow accommodates side sleepers well. But light and average-weight back sleepers should get the support they need for a straight spine.
  • Cooling: As you’ve likely guessed, the Snow mattress outperforms The One in this category. Between its hybrid construction, upgraded cooling cover, and phase change materials, hot sleepers will definitely sleep cooler on the Snow.
  • Body weight: Heavier sleepers will do better on the Snow than the One. Not only does it offer zoned support, it has coils that should handle more weight. Still, we’d advise heavyweight sleepers over 230 pounds to find a mattress designed for their body type specifically.

Our Review Process

At Sleepopolis, our team of certified sleep science coaches personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time lying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress.
