If you like your mattress firm (and I mean really firm), the Plank Firm Luxe might catch your attention. This flippable hybrid from Brooklyn Bedding promises a sturdier sleep surface than most beds on the market, with two firmness options in one mattress.
At Sleepopolis, we have tested our fair share of extra-firm mattresses, so we had to put these bold claims to the test.
We’ve tested over 330 mattresses and sleep products and helped more than 60,000 sleepers find a bed that suits their needs, preferences, and budget. For this review, we also brought in insights from our chief medical product tester, Dr. Joe Tedesco, who evaluated the mattress from a physical therapist’s perspective. Our chief medical advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, also contributed expert commentary on sleep health and performance.
Using a series of in-house tests, we measured the firmness, pressure relief, motion isolation, responsiveness, cooling, and edge support of the Plank Firm Luxe. After evaluating the results, we found this mattress shines most for back sleepers, fans of a very firm feel, and those who want strong spinal support.
Read on to see how it performed on each test.
Our Plank Firm Luxe Review, Summarized
The Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm Luxe is a flippable mattress designed for sleepers who prefer a “floor-like” feel, with a firm side rated 7/10 and an extra-firm side rated 7.5/10 on our firmness scale. Both ratings are above the industry-wide average of 6.5 (or medium-firm). During testing, it provided strong support and excellent spinal alignment, especially for back sleepers, who benefited from the lifted hips and stable surface. However, its firmness created noticeable pressure at the shoulders and hips for lightweight and average-weight side sleepers.
The Plank Firm Luxe is an upgraded model of Brooklyn Bedding’s original Plank Firm. Like the OG, the Luxe is a flippable mattress with both a firm and extra-firm side. However, this bed is a hybrid, meaning it has coils at the center. This gives it a leg up for bounce and support. It should work wonderfully for back sleepers, including those weighing more than 230 pounds.
What our tester says:
“I love this on my back. It’s firm enough to keep the spine completely straight, but it’s not too firm. I’m still getting comfort from the foam layers filling in my lower back, and there’s enough cushioning at my shoulder blades as well.” – Riley Otis, staff writer and certified sleep science coach
Our Review Process
At Sleepopolis, our team of certified sleep science coaches personally tests each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how easy (or difficult) it is to move it from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time lying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on each mattress.

Plank Firm Luxe Overview

The Plank Firm Luxe is an upgrade from the all-foam Plank Firm model. Unlike the Plank Firm, the Luxe version is a hybrid model featuring pocketed coils for added support. The Plank Firm Luxe is flippable, featuring a firm and an extra-firm side. The flippable design provides sleepers a choice between two different feels. The firm side features an additional plush cover layer for pressure-relieving comfort, while the extra-firm side has firm support for ultimate spinal alignment.
Who I Recommend the Plank Firm Luxe For
- Combination sleepers should fare well on either side of this flippable mattress, thanks to its responsive pocketed coils that make the surface easy to move around on.
- Sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or more will benefit from the robust support of this firm mattress. Sleepers in this category should experience proper spinal alignment.
- Couples who prefer a firm bed will benefit from above-average motion isolation. Sleepers sensitive to movement will not have to worry about a restless bedmate disrupting their sleep.

Who I Don’t Recommend the Plank Firm Luxe For
- Side sleepers will likely fail to get the cushioning and contouring they need from this mattress.
- Individuals with joint pain will need a softer mattress than the Plank Firm Luxe. These sleepers need a plush surface to cradle high-pressure areas.
- The Plank Firm Luxe only earned an average score in the cooling category. Hot sleepers will fare better on a mattress with additional cooling features.

Plank Firm Luxe Value
The Plank Firm Luxe is $1,598 for a queen-sized mattress before any discounts. It is also often discounted for just under $1,200. At either price, the Plank Firm Luxe is a great value, given that you get a flippable model with two firmness levels, innerspring coils, and dense, durable memory foam.
I think sleepers will be able to squeeze a lot of use out of the Plank Firm Luxe for many years with proper use. For added longevity, I recommend rotating the mattress every 3 to 6 months to ensure even wear.
What Is the Plank Firm Luxe Made Of?

Despite technically being two mattresses in one, the Plank Firm Luxe is a reasonable 13 inches tall. Learn more about each of its layers below.
Quilted Top (Extra Firm Side) – The first layer on the extra-firm side is a .75-inch quilted top. This thin layer minimizes loft to maintain a firm, consistent sleep surface. For an additional cost, you can also add on the GlacioTex Cooling Cover for improved temperature regulation.
High-Density Support Foam – Two inches of firm support foam to prevent sleepers from sinking too far into the mattress and hitting the coils beneath.
Individually Encased Innerspring Coils – The centerpiece of the Plank Firm Luxe is a layer of up to 961 pocketed coils. Since it is between the mattress’s memory foam layers, sleepers will still be able to enjoy solid motion isolation alongside the firm support.
High-Density Support Foam – This layer consists of an additional 2 inches of firm, supportive memory foam. On the firm side of the mattress, this prevents sleepers from sinking into the bed and feeling the pocketed springs in the center.
Comfort Foam – This foam layer acts as the comfort layer of the firm side of the mattress. This layer makes this side of the bed softer than the extra-firm side while providing additional contouring and cushioning.
Quilted Bottom (or Firm Side Top Layer) – The bottom layer is also the first layer of the firm side. It consists of a 1.5-inch quilted layer that provides a subtle loft.
Plank Firm Luxe Mattress Firmness
At best, the mattress firmness rating is a general guideline, as factors that vary from person to person, including body weight and preferred sleeping position, significantly impact how a mattress feels.
Mattress tester Riley Otis gave the firm side of the Plank Firm Luxe a firmness rating of 7 out of 10 and the extra-firm side a rating of 7.5 out of 10. Both of these ratings are firmer than the industry average of 6.5 out of 10 (medium-firm).

On both sides, Riley experienced minimal sinkage on her back, stomach, and side. She noted that her spine felt completely straight across every sleeping position on both sides of the mattress. That said, the quilted top and additional comfort layer on the firm side helped fill in the space at her lower back.
“On my side, I feel like this mattress is too firm for my body weight,” Riley said. “While the top few layers provide a bit of sinkage on the Firm side of the mattress, I can still feel pressure at my shoulders and hips. However, sleepers with larger bodies may sink more into this side of the mattress and experience more cushioning and contouring.”
Plank Firm Luxe Mattress Performance
Mattress feel is somewhat subjective, but that doesn’t stop us from testing every model to see how it performs in categories that matter most to sleepers. These tests help us identify which sleepers a mattress is best suited for. Read on to see how both sides of the Plank Firm Luxe performed on our tests.
Pressure Relief
Testing pressure relief helps our certified sleep science coaches determine how effectively a mattress can relieve pain and ease tension in areas like the hips, shoulders, and back.
If you are someone experiencing aches and pains in these areas, a mattress with good contouring and pressure relief may help alleviate some of those symptoms.
As Dr. Raj Dasgupta explains, “Inadequate pressure relief often yields increased pain and disrupted sleep.”
To test pressure relief, we use a specialized mat that we roll onto the mattress surface and then lie on in the side and back-sleeping positions. Using thermal imaging, this mat identifies areas of pressure buildup in the body and translates those results into a color-coded graphic. Areas of low pressure show up as blue and green. Areas of pressure buildup appear yellow and red.
We also collect data from testers in different body weight categories. For the Plank Firm Luxe, Riley was the lightweight tester (130 pounds or lighter). During this process, she also invited a heavyweight tester (over 230 pounds) to provide feedback. Additionally, Dr. Joe Tedesco, our chief medical product tester and licensed physical therapist, provided feedback from the perspective of an average-weight sleeper (130-230 pounds).
Pressure Relief (Firm Side)
During testing, Riley and her fellow mattress testers found that the firm side of the Plank Firm Luxe was most beneficial for back sleepers, thanks to its robust support that helped elevate the lower body and kept the spine in a neutral position. She gave it a perfect 5 out of 5 for back-sleeping pressure relief.

“I’m getting lots of lift at my hips to prop my spine into a neutral position,” Riley said, “I’m also loving the amount of cushioning I’m receiving at my lumbar region and upper back on this side of the Plank.”

Our heavyweight tester agreed that this side of the mattress was most comfortable on his back. “I’m sinking in more than Riley did, but I still feel supported,” he said. “I’m getting more contouring across my lower back, so this feels pretty good.”
That said, everyone agreed that side sleepers would be uncomfortable on the Plank Firm Luxe. Riley gave this side of the mattress a 3.8 out of 5 for side sleeping because it didn’t provide enough cushioning for her or Dr. Tedesco (who falls into the average-weight category) during testing.
“I really wasn’t a fan of this on my side,” Riley said. “While the foam does a little bit to cushion the joints, I think it leaves something to be desired.”

Dr. Tedesco agreed that the firm side of this mattress was too firm to benefit side sleepers in the average-weight category. “I have a lot of pressure buildup in my knees and hips when I’m on my side,” he said. “I don’t think this is a great mattress for side sleepers.”
Pressure Relief (Extra Firm Side)
Similarly, the extra-firm side of the Plank Firm Luxe performed better for back sleeping than it did for side sleeping, earning a 4.1 and 3.4 in both categories, respectively. The extra-firm side of the mattress lacks the additional layer of foam that the firm side does, making it less than ideal for anyone seeking any level of contouring from their bed.
Our in-house heavyweight tester was the only one to experience pressure relief in either position. That said, he preferred it for back sleeping over side sleeping.

“I feel great on my back on this side of the mattress,” he said, “I’m not sinking in too much anywhere. I feel like I’m getting enough contouring at my hips to make my spine feel even. However, I feel minor pressure in the upper shoulders and lower neck.”

Dr. Tedesco also felt more comfortable on his back on the extra-firm side of this mattress. However, he noted that it was less than ideal for lightweight and average sleepers.
“I immediately notice that I don’t feel any contouring in my lumbar spine,” said Dr. Tedesco. “However, I still feel supported and don’t have much pressure buildup in my pelvis. Overall, I think this mattress is a better fit for heavier sleepers. Other sleepers likely won’t get enough contouring to stay comfortable long-term on this mattress.”
Motion Isolation
People who share a bed with a restless partner or pet need a mattress that effectively dampens motion and isolates it to one side of the mattress. Strong motion isolation prevents movement from rippling to your side of the bed and disturbing your slumber.
“Prioritizing motion isolation will help couples sleep comfortably and undisturbed through the night,” explains Dr. Dasgupta.
Both sides of the Plank Firm Luxe perform surprisingly well in this category because its responsive innerspring coils are sandwiched between two layers of high-density foam. During testing, the Plank Luxe Firm motion isolation scores of 4.7 and 5 out of 5 for its extra-firm and firm sides, respectively.
Ripple test: During this test, Riley placed a large container of water on the bed on one side. Next, she got into bed on the other side and moved around to see how much the water would slosh around. She noted minimal movement on both sides of the mattress.

“On both sides of the mattress, the water barely moved when I climbed in and out of bed,” Riley said. “There was more rippling when I switched between sleeping positions, but the two layers of foam did a nice job muffling the motion on impact.”
Motion transfer test: Next, Riley invited one of her colleagues to move around on one side of the mattress while she lay still and blindfolded on the opposite side. During this test, Riley barely noticed any movement rippling across the surface of the mattress.

“Again, both sides of the mattress performed really well here,” she said. “I could feel the pressure changing as the bed adjusted to the weight of another person, but I didn’t feel like my partner’s movement was affecting my actual body. I would have no trouble sleeping through the night on this.”
Responsiveness
Responsiveness measures how fast a mattress returns to its original shape after applying weight and pressure. If you are a combination sleeper, or someone who frequently changes sleeping positions to get comfortable, you will want something with a snappy, responsive surface. A responsive surface makes it easier to move around on the bed.
Both sides of the Plank Firm Luxe performed well in this category, thanks to its robust layer of innerspring coils. The extra-firm side of this mattress earned a perfect 5-star score in this category, while the firm side earned a strong 4.5 out of 5.
Switch test: Our switch test involves moving between different positions on the mattress surface and assessing how difficult it is to do so. On either side of this mattress, Riley could quickly change between sleeping positions.
“I thought moving from one position to the next was very easy on both sides of this mattress,” Riley said. “The foam wasn’t inhibiting my movement, and it certainly wasn’t trapping my body. I had to push just a tiny bit into the foam to get myself going, but it’s one of the easier beds to move around on.”

Sinkage test: Next, Riley placed a 53-pound kettlebell on both sides of the Plank and used a ruler to measure how deeply the layers sank. Unsurprisingly, the kettlebell did not sink much on either side of this firm mattress. On the firm side, Riley recorded a sinkage depth of 3.25 inches. Meanwhile, it only sank 2.6 inches on the extra-firm side. For reference, the average sinkage is 3.7 inches on most mattresses.
Bounce test: Our final responsiveness test consists of dropping a 25-pound ball from 6 feet above the mattress. We use a yardstick on the wall to measure how high the ball bounces off the bed. The ball jumped an impressive 30 inches after being dropped onto both sides of the Plank. This number is well above the 16.3-inch average. In other words, on either side of this bed, you are bound to enjoy a responsive sleep surface thanks to its pocketed coil layer.

Cooling
We assess a mattress’s construction first when testing temperature regulation. While the Plank Firm Luxe does not come with any special cooling features, its innerspring coils provide a natural source of ventilation. Brooklyn Bedding also offers a cooling cover add-on for about $200 more before any promotions.
Riley was not particularly blown away by the cooling abilities of the Plank Firm Luxe, awarding its extra-firm side a score of 3 out of 5 and its firm side a 3.5 out of 5.
Thermal Gun test: Riley used a thermal gun to record the surface temperature of the Plank Firm Luxe before lying on it for five minutes. She conducted this test twice to assess how the firm and extra-firm sides would perform. After five minutes on each side, she recorded an 11.7-degree increase on the extra-firm side and a 9.7-degree increase on the firm side.

For context, a temperature increase of less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling. An increase of 5 to 10 degrees signifies good cooling, 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, and more than 15 degrees indicates poor cooling.
Cover test: Before lying down on either side of the Plank, Riley felt both quilted mattress toppers to see if they felt cool to the touch. She noted that before lying down on it, both covers felt silky smooth and cool against her hand. However, she also noted that this could have been because the room was cooler.
Feel test: For this test, Riley felt the surface of the mattress to determine if it felt cool to the touch while pressing into it and lying down.
“Both sides of the mattress felt cool to the touch initially, which is why I was surprised to see the temperature increase that much,” Riley said. “Based on my observations, I’m not sure that I would recommend the Plank to particularly hot sleepers, because it seems to absorb heat. That said, I think this bed should still be comfortable for most people.”
Edge Support
We assess the edge support on every mattress to determine how its perimeter holds up under weight. A secure mattress border allows you to lie and sit on the edges and corners of your mattress without it collapsing beneath you.
Robust edge support is a must-have for couples, sleepers with larger bodies, and individuals who use the entire surface of the bed. Edge support is also an effective measure of durability, as a bed with reinforced edges is less likely to sag over time.
“Durable mattresses usually always have a strong support core and good edge support,” explains Dr. Dasgupta. “A high-quality mattress should provide long-lasting, consistent support and maintain its structural integrity over time.”
During testing, Riley gave the firm side of the Plank an edge support score of 3.5 out of 5 and the extra-firm side a score of 3.2 out of 5. In other words, the Plank Firm Luxe’s edge support is slightly above-average; however, people who bear down on the perimeter to stand up in the morning will likely need something more supportive.
Tape Measure test: To simulate how much the perimeter of a mattress might sink when sleepers in different weight categories sit or lie on the edge, we stack weights on top of each other directly on the sides of the bed.
On the Plank Firm Luxe, Riley and her colleagues repeated this process three times using three weight stacks: a 99-pound stack, a 154-pound stack, and a 198-pound stack. Next, she used a tape measure to measure the sinkage.
On the firm side, Riley and her fellow mattress testers found that the results ranged from 4.75 inches for the lightest stack (representing lighter sleepers) to 5.5 inches for the average-weight stack and up to 6 inches for the heaviest stack. Meanwhile, on the extra-firm side, those measurements were 4 inches, 5.5 inches, and 6.5 inches, respectively.
Based on these results, sleepers across all weight categories will likely notice the mattress collapse beneath them, particularly while sitting down on the perimeter. The quilted cover and foam layers collapse significantly before reaching the coil layer beneath it.
For most sleepers, this shouldn’t present a problem; however, sleepers weighing over 230 pounds and people with mobility concerns will likely need something with better structural integrity along the edges.

Seated test: Riley evaluated the seated edge support of the Plank Firm Luxe by sitting on its sides and corners. She repeated this process for both the firm and extra-firm sides of the Plank. During this test, she noted that the slippery quilted covers on either side made it difficult for her to feel secure while sitting on the sides of the Plank.
Full body test: Next, Riley lay down on the far reaches of the Plank Firm Luxe to see if sleepers could gravitate toward the edges of the mattress without fear of falling off or feeling unsteady. During this test, Riley found that the firm side of the mattress provided much more stability than the extra-firm side.
“I actually feel really supported and secure when lying near the edge on the firm side,” Riley said. “Regardless of my sleeping position, I don’t feel like one side of my body is tilting towards the edge. I’m really surprised by how supported I feel, especially considering this is the softer side.”

Plank Firm Luxe Mattress Performance for Couples
Based on Riley’s experience, I believe the Plank Firm Luxe could be a suitable option for couples who prioritize motion isolation and mobility. That said, its less-than-stellar edge support makes it a hard sell for couples who enjoy sprawling out across the entire surface of the bed.
If you and your partner fall into the latter category, I suggest consulting our list of the best mattresses for couples instead.
Other Performance Factors to Consider
Riley covered a lot of ground with her tests; however, there are still a few more considerations to keep in mind before you decide to purchase the Plank Firm Luxe.
Sex
The best mattresses for sex score high in the responsiveness, edge support, and noise categories. Based on those criteria, both sides of the flippable Plank Firm Luxe are mostly ideal for sex, with edge support being the only thing holding them back. The firm side of the Plank earned a sex score of 4.3 out of 5, while the extra firm side earned a score of 4.4.
Noise
Both sides of the Plank Firm Luxe were whisper-quiet during testing. Riley was able to toss, turn, and get in and out of bed without hearing a creak, squeak, or sigh coming from the mattress.
Base Compatibility
The firm and extra-firm sides of the Plank Firm Luxe earned a score of 3 out of 5 in this category. According to Riley, the mattress mostly followed the shape of the adjustable base, but didn’t perfectly conform to every position. There was a noticeable gap where the frame and the mattress don’t fully connect, so it doesn’t sit completely flush.
Durability
When calculating our durability score, our testers consider materials, edge support, tester feedback, and the warranty.
Despite its somewhat average edge support, we anticipate that the Plank Firm Luxe will last 7 to 10 years with proper use and care. Its high-quality memory foam and dense layer of innerspring coils shouldn’t deteriorate quickly.
Brooklyn Bedding also offers a limited lifetime warranty and a 120-night sleep trial for added peace of mind.

Plank Firm Luxe Sleeping Position and Body Weight
Your preferred sleeping position and body weight significantly change how a bed feels. Lighter sleepers (under 130 pounds) lack the weight to sink into a bed, which makes it feel firmer. Heavier sleepers (over 230 pounds) tend to sink in more, which is why they often prefer beds that feel softer than advertised.
Before we dive into our recommendations, though, we want to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 230 pounds).
As a general takeaway, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average-weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average-weight sleepers and sink into the mattress more. As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers likely need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.
Is the Plank Firm Luxe a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – Back sleepers in this category who prefer a firmer surface for perfect spinal alignment might appreciate the firm side of the Plank Firm Luxe. That said, it is unlikely that they will get any contouring around their lower lumbar region on this bed.
- Light Side Sleepers – Both sides of the Plank Firm Luxe are too rigid for lightweight side sleepers.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – Stomach sleepers in this category who prefer a firm sleep surface might like the Plank Firm Luxe. Both sides of this mattress will elevate their hips and place their spines in a neutral position.
Is the Plank Firm Luxe a Good Mattress for Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 pounds)?
- Average-Weight Back Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers should feel comfortable on either side of the Plank Firm Luxe.
- Average-Weight Side Sleepers – Both sides of the Plank Firm Luxe might feel too rigid for side sleepers in this weight category, especially those with sensitive joints. However, side sleepers who prefer a firmer sleep surface might enjoy the firm side of this bed.
- Average-Weight Stomach Sleepers – Similar to back sleepers in this category, average-weight stomach sleepers should fare well on either side of the Plank Firm Luxe.
Is the Plank Firm Luxe a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 230 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – Heavy back sleepers should fare well on either side of the Plank Firm Luxe.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – Side sleepers in this weight category will sink further into the mattress layers and experience some nice contouring from the Plank Firm Luxe. Both sides of this mattress should work well for these sleepers.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – The extra-firm side of this mattress is ideal for stomach sleepers in this weight category, as it should provide them with enough support around their hips for spinal alignment.

- Cooling: The Signature Hybrid earned a much higher cooling score (4.5 out of 5) than the Plank Firm Luxe.
- Body weight: The Plank Firm Luxe offers heavier sleepers some much-needed support. Lightweight sleepers should appreciate the softer firmness of the Signature Hybrid.

Plank Firm Luxe vs Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling
The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling is one of the brand’s more luxurious options. We found that the Aurora Luxe performed well in nearly every testing category, including cooling, responsiveness, and motion isolation. Like the Plank Firm Luxe, it is also on the firmer side at 7.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale.
- Price: The Aurora Luxe Cooling is pricier than the Plank Firm Luxe, costing nearly $2,300 before any discounts for a queen-sized mattress.
- Sleeping position: Neither mattress is ideal for side sleepers, especially those with sensitive joints. Stomach and back sleepers should benefit from the firm support of either model.
- Cooling: The Aurora Luxe Cooling earned a perfect 5 out of 5 in our cooling category, making it the clear winner for hot sleepers.
- Body weight: Sleepers with bigger bodies should find either model comfortable, thanks to their firm and supportive construction. The Aurora Luxe has a soft cooling cover, giving it an edge for lightweight sleepers.

Plank Firm Luxe FAQs
What is the difference between Plank Firm and Plank Firm Luxe?
The Plank Firm Luxe is a hybrid mattress, meaning it has innerspring coils in its construction, while the Plank Firm is an all-foam mattress. The Plank Firm Luxe also has additional foam layers for added comfort.
What firmness level is a Plank mattress?
The firm side of the Plank Firm Luxe is a 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale, and the extra-firm side is a 7.5 out of 10. Both firmness ratings feel significantly firmer than the industry average, which is typically 6.5 out of 10 (or medium firm).
How frequently should I rotate my flippable mattress?
Brooklyn Bedding recommends rotating your Plank 180 degrees every six to eight months.
How is the Plank Firm Luxe shipped?
The Plank Firm Luxe mattress is a bed-in-a-box and will be shipped to you free and will arrive compressed. I suggest that you should allow 24 to 48 hours for off-gassing once you unwrap your new mattress and so that the mattress has time to fully inflate. This bed is also rather hefty so I recommend you get a friend or family member to help you unbox it.
Does the Plank Firm Luxe come with a sleep trial?
Yes, Brooklyn Bedding has a 120-night sleep trial for mattresses only.
Does the Plank Firm Luxe come with a warranty?
Yes, Brooklyn Bedding offers a limited lifetime warranty on all of their mattresses.
