Serta is probably one of the most well-known mattress brands in the United States. They’re known for making quality mattresses, so I’m really excited that I got to test out the Serta Arctic, a cooling mattress that Serta claims has 15 times better cooling powers, compared to their Serta Perfect Sleeper Luminous Sleep model.
The Serta Arctic is available in a Plush Foam model and a Medium Hybrid model, as well as two Arctic Premier models: Firm Foam and Plush Hybrid. But for this review, I tested out the Plush Foam model, which is an all-foam bed. I was particularly interested in trying this model, because foam is known for trapping body heat easily, so a cooling foam mattress is a great find!

Serta Arctic Mattress – Our Video Review
Is Serta Arctic a Good Mattress For You?
Before we dig into all the nitty gritty details of the Serta Arctic, here’s a quick overview of my recommendations of who the Serta Arctic is the best mattress for and who should consider a different bed.
Who I Recommend Serta Arctic Mattress For
- As a back sleeper myself, I found the Serta Arctic mattress to be super comfortable for back sleeping. It is a softer mattress, but the foam is super supportive. The contouring you’ll get as you slowly sink into the foam should offer good pressure relief on the hips and shoulders, as well.
- I think the Serta Arctic is also going to be a good choice for side sleepers. The cushioning top foam layers should be good for relieving pressure in the shoulders and hips, which is key for side sleepers.
- And of course, hot sleepers! I was really impressed with this mattress’s cooling technology, especially since it is all foam! Hybrid mattresses usually are much more cooling than foam ones, as the coils allow for airflow in the bed, but the cooling foams used in the Serta Arctic work well to draw heat away from the body.
Who I Don’t Recommend Serta Arctic Mattress For
- I would not recommend the Serta Arctic for stomach sleepers—at least, not the Plush Foam model. I haven’t tested the Medium Hybrid model yet, but that one may work better for stomach sleepers if you are really interested in the Serta Arctic, as the coils will offer more support and likely make the mattress a little firmer. Stomach sleepers need a firm mattress to ensure their hips don’t sink down out of alignment with their shoulders. To find more mattress options, check out our best mattresses for stomach sleepers roundup.
- I’d also warn combination sleepers that the Serta Arctic isn’t the easiest mattress to move around on. Once you sink into the foam a bit, you may feel a little stuck. I wouldn’t say it’s a deal breaker — I sleep on my back, but sometimes switch to my side, and it didn’t bother me tremendously — but if you have some mobility issues or prefer a really bouncy, easy-to-move-on mattress, the Serta Arctic might not work for you.
- Finally, I wouldn’t recommend the Serta Arctic to budget shoppers. Price-wise, this is definitely a luxury mattress, with the queen size priced over $3,000. It’s a high-quality bed, but if you’re looking for something a little more wallet-friendly, I’d recommend checking out our best affordable mattresses roundup.
How Firm Is the Serta Arctic Mattress?
Here at Sleepopolis, we rate firmness on a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. In order to determine the firmness, we test the mattress by lying on it in different sleeping positions and polling a few different people in the office for their firmness rating. We do this because everyone can have a slightly different experience of a mattress’s firmness based on their body type and size.
After testing it out, we decided that the Serta Arctic is 5.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for a medium-firm mattress is 6.5 out of 10, so that means that the Serta Arctic is a soft mattress. I thought this mattress had a slow-sinking feel that was reminiscent of a classic Tempur-Pedic feel.
I definitely felt the mattress molding and conforming around me the longer I laid on it, but I also didn’t feel completely enveloped into it, which can happen sometimes with memory foam mattresses. I still felt very supported on the mattress, even as it contoured around me.
I think the Serta Arctic accomplishes this supportive but soft feel thanks to its construction. The foam used in the top layers feel very soft and cushy, and have a very slow response to pressure. But then at the bottom, there’s a super supportive layer of core foam that keeps you from sinking down too deep.
This mix of softness and support is great for back and side sleepers, as it offers pressure relief and maintains spinal alignment.

Serta Arctic Mattress Performance
Now to understand this mattress beyond just the feel, I ran it through several different tests to get an idea of its performance for different sleeping positions, for pain relief, and for couples.
Testing the Serta Arctic Mattress In Different Sleeping Positions
I mentioned before that body type can alter how a mattress will feel to you. That’s because different weights need different levels of support and pressure relief. Compared to average weight sleepers, lighter sleepers will sink into their bed less and heavier sleepers will sink into their bed more.
It’s important to look at a mattress’s performance for both your body type and primary sleeping position, so in this section I’ll go over how I think the Serta Arctic will work for different sleepers based on my experience of testing. it.
Is the Serta Arctic a Good Mattress For Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
- Light Back Sleepers – The Serta Arctic should work great for light back sleepers. They should get great spinal alignment lying on their back and if they need any pressure relief on joints, the soft, cushioning feel should help there.
- Light Side Sleepers – Light side sleepers should also do well on the Serta Arctic. The cushioning foam should conform around your hips and shoulders to prevent any pressure buildup in those areas.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend the Serta Arctic for light stomach sleepers. Even though lighter people won’t sink into the bed as much as average or heavy people, it would still probably be better to pick a slightly firmer mattress.
Is the Serta Arctic a Good Mattress For Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – Like light back sleepers, I think average weight back sleepers will really enjoy the Serta Arctic. I’m an average weight back sleeper and I thought it was super comfy!
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – I also think average weight side sleepers will really like the Serta Arctic. The soft top foam layers will mold around the shoulders and hips nicely for pressure relief.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend that average weight stomach sleepers steer clear of the Serta Arctic Plush Foam model, as it is just going to be too soft to keep their hips aligned with their shoulders.
Is the Serta Arctic a Good Mattress For Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – Often we recommend that heavy sleepers opt for a mattress with coils to ensure they get necessary support, but I think that the Serta Arctic will actually work well for heavy back sleepers, as it is a very supportive foam mattress. It is molding and contouring, but I think it is durable and supportive enough to keep heavy back sleepers’ spine aligned.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – I think the Serta Arctic could also work well for heavy side sleepers. Again, this mattress combines sturdy support with soft, pressure-relieving top layers of foam, so I think it’s a good option for heavy side sleepers.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – For heavy stomach sleepers however, I’d definitely recommend something firmer and even more supportive. With a heavier bodyweight, you’ll definitely want to ensure your hips aren’t sinking into your mattress. Sinking hips can lead to lower back pain in the long run, so a firm mattress is the way to go here.
Serta Arctic Mattress Pain Relief Performance
When we assess pain relief in a mattress, it’s important to look at how a mattress can relieve pressure. Buildup of pressure while you are sleeping can worsen existing pain or even create pain over time! I think the best example of this is if you’ve ever tried sleeping on your side on a firm mattress — you probably had a pretty sore shoulder the next day. So it’s important to know where you may need pressure relief and whether or not a mattress can provide it.
To determine this, I used a pressure map on the Serta Arctic mattress. Essentially, it’s a sensor that I place on top of the mattress and lie on. The pressure map will detect where pressure is building up and indicates that in the reading by color. Blues and greens indicate little to no pressure, whereas yellows and reds indicate pressure building up.
Back Pain – Lying on my back, you can see there is essentially no pressure buildup in my back. The soft foam definitely offers nice pressure relief for my back while I’m lying on it. On my side, there is a small buildup of pressure, but this is within the normal range for side sleeping. And on my stomach, while there is no pressure buildup, I definitely felt my hips sinking into the mattress, which can easily lead to back pain, as it puts your spine out of alignment.
Shoulder Pain – On my back, again you can see here that there is practically no pressure buildup around my shoulders. On my side, there is a small buildup showing on the map and honestly, my shoulder was the only spot where I did feel a little buildup of pressure while testing. I think as the foam molds around you, that pressure starts to dissipate a bit, but if you have more sensitive shoulders, this is something just to be aware of. And on my stomach, there was no shoulder pressure buildup, but again, the Serta Arctic overall isn’t a good bed for stomach sleepers.
Hip Pain – Looking at my hips on the back pressure map, there is a very low buildup of pressure, but this is within the acceptable range for back sleepers and personally, I didn’t feel any pressure on my hips. On my side, there’s also that low level of pressure, but it’s in a good range and it is evenly distributed. On my stomach, there’s no pressure buildup, but that sinking with the hips can lead to pain over time.
Serta Arctic Mattress Performance for Couples
When it comes to sharing a bed with your partner, there are a few more things that I think are important to consider: motion transfer, sex, cooling, and edge support. In this section, I’ll go over how the Serta Arctic performed in these tests and determine if this is a good mattress for couples.
Motion Transfer
Ever shared a mattress that made every one of your partners’ movements feel like you’re bouncing on a trampoline? If you have, you know a bed that transfers a lot of motion is not conducive to good sleep. So for couples, it’s important to find a mattress that can isolate motion at the source and prevent it from transferring across the bed.
In order to test this, I used a seismograph to monitor motion transfer as I dropped a 10-pound ball onto the mattress from different heights. Each drop is meant to mimic a different movement you might experience in bed.
The Serta Arctic did really well on this test! I was impressed with its ability to stifle motion and prevent it from transferring across the mattress. Foam mattresses are often great at isolating motion, as the foam can absorb it really well, so this wasn’t a surprising result. If you share your bed, you shouldn’t experience much disturbance from your partner on the Serta Arctic.
Sex
Now odds are, if you share your bed with a partner for sleeping, you also probably use it for sex. A mattress that’s good for sex will be a mattress that is bouncy and responsive. Unfortunately, this is an area the Serta Arctic does not excel in. Because that top foam layer is so soft and conforming, it’s easy to feel a little stuck trying to move on this mattress. If this is a concern, you might want to check out our best mattresses for sex page.
Cooling
Another important consideration for couples is cooling. Two people will generate twice as much body heat as one person, so if you or your partner sleep hot, a cooling mattress can make a big difference in your sleep quality.
As the name implies, the Serta Arctic is a great cooling mattress. The Reactex System foam used in the top layer feels cool to the touch (I felt it when I cut open the mattress, but don’t try that at home —you’ll void your warranty.) And the cooling gel memory foams used in the third layer will also help to draw heat away from your body. Even just touching the surface of the bed, it feels cool.
Edge Support
The final consideration for couples is edge support. What is edge support? Essentially, it is how well the perimeter of the bed bears weight. A supportive edge can make your bed feel larger, as you can use the entire surface area without feeling like you might slip off the edge.
I thought the Serta Arctic had pretty decent edge support along the sides, but not very good edge support at the end of the bed. So for couples, I think it will be fine, as the side edges are a bigger concern for making the bed feel larger. But if you like to sit at the end of your bed to read or tie your shoes, the edge support isn’t too great there.
What Is the Serta Arctic Mattress Made Of?
Now let’s take a look inside the Serta Arctic. I cut open the cover and the fire barrier to get a look at what makes up this mattress. The Serta Arctic has an all-foam construction, using Serta’s Reactex System, CustomFit HD Memory foam, and gel foam to create a cooling but cozy sleep experience. All the foams used in the Serta Arctic are CertiPUR-US certified to be free from harmful chemicals and pollutants.
Cover – The cover of the Serta Arctic has a cool-to-the-touch feel, as it works in conjunction with the cooling foam below it to create a cool sleep surface. It also has a really pretty pattern that gives off those arctic and icy vibes!
Reactex System – The first foam comfort layer is the Reactex System foam, which is very soft and contouring. This foam is also what helps to cool the cover of the mattress. When I cut open the mattress, I could feel that this foam was cool just by touching it.
CustomFit HD Memory Foam – Below the Reactex foam is the CustomFit HD memory foam, which is also very contouring and has a slow response to pressure.
EverCool Fuze Gel Memory Foam – This transition layer between the slow-moving, contouring foams above and the sturdy support below is made with gel memory foam. This foam has a bit quicker response to pressure and the gel-infusions will help to draw heat away from the body as you sleep.
Serta Foam Core – At the bottom of the mattress, there is the foundational layer of Serta Foam Core. This foam is much denser and more supportive than the foams above it. It doesn’t really have any contouring or response to pressure, so it acts as a foundation for the upper layers.

My Final Thoughts About the Serta Arctic Mattress
Now that we’ve gone through all the details of the Serta Arctic mattress, here’s my final thoughts about its best and most lacking features.
My Favorite Things About the Serta Arctic Mattress
Probably the biggest draw to the Serta Arctic is its cooling capabilities. I was pleasantly surprised by how cool it felt, as the model I tested is entirely foam. I think hot sleepers will definitely find the Serta Arctic to be comfortable and it’s an especially great pick if you’re a hot sleeper who wants a memory foam bed.
Personally, my favorite aspect of the Serta Arctic was the feel. I really liked the slow-sinking, soft feel of the top foam layers. The foam cradles me just enough to provide pressure relief and be cozy, but not so much that I feel enveloped in the mattress. It reminded me a lot of the classic Tempur-Pedic feel, so if you like that type of memory foam, you’ll probably like this plush mattress!
I also think that overall, the Serta Arctic is going to be a great mattress for couples. It’s cooling, has stellar motion isolation, and pretty decent edge support. It won’t be the best mattress for sex, but it’s difficult to find a mattress that is both bouncy and isolates motion, so if motion transfer is a bigger concern for you than sex, the Serta Arctic is definitely a good pick.
My Serta Arctic Mattress Complaints
As I mentioned earlier, this mattress is not a good option for stomach sleepers. I’d recommend a hybrid mattress or innerspring mattress for most stomach sleepers, as an all-foam is often too soft to keep stomach sleepers’ hips elevated, especially for average to heavy stomach sleepers.
While I love the soft, contouring feel of the Serta Arctic, it isn’t the best for combination sleepers, because once you sink into the foam, it can be difficult to move around on the bed. Similarly, if you like the feeling of sleeping on top of your mattress more so than sinking in, you probably won’t like the Serta Arctic.
Finally, it is a pretty expensive mattress. If you’re on a tight budget, there are definitely some more affordable mattress options than the Serta Arctic.

Serta Arctic Mattress Vs
Now that we’ve got a solid grip on the Serta Arctic, let’s compare it to some of its cooling competitors on the market right now. You’ve got to explore all the options before buying a new mattress, right? In this section, I’ll be putting the Serta Arctic head to head with the GhostBed and the Bear Pro.
Serta Arctic Mattress vs GhostBed Mattress
- The GhostBed is an all-foam mattress that is known for its excellent cooling abilities. And I promise, the only spooky thing about it is how cool it really sleeps! It uses a combination of aerated latex foam and gel-infused memory foam for great breathability and temperature regulation.
- However, unlike the Serta Arctic, the GhostBed is very bouncy — thanks to that latex — so it’s a really great mattress for combination sleepers. It’ll be super easy to change between sleeping positions.
- But the bouncy feel of the GhostBed means that it also transfers motion easily, so if you are someone who shares your bed and is easily awoken by movement, I’d go with the Serta Arctic over the GhostBed.
- Read our full GhostBed mattress review to learn more.
We recommend this mattress for the following sleeper types: Financing options are available for this mattress. The GhostBed is a medium-firm bed that should suit a variety of sleepers. It uses a combination of latex and gel memory foam for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.

Other Models From Serta
Now let’s take a look at another Serta mattress to see how the Serta Arctic compares.
Serta Arctic Mattress vs Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress
- The Serta Perfect Sleeper line features six different beds, but we’ve reviewed the Renewed Night Pillow Top model. It’s a hybrid mattress with a cushioning pillow top, making it a great option for side sleepers and back sleepers who need some softness on pressure points.
- The Serta Perfect Sleeper is also a good mattress for heavy sleepers, because the innerspring coil support system will support heavier people’s weight well.
- It’s also a great bed for couples, thanks to great motion isolation, cooling properties, and strong edge support.
