Maintaining a comfortable body temperature throughout the night improves sleep quality and duration. It also leaves you feeling refreshed and restored in the morning, rather than being kept awake by night sweats.

Our Chilipad 2.0 Review, Summarized
We found that the Chilipad drastically changes your mattress temperature without compromising its feel. Though it has a lengthy setup process, once we had it on the mattress and understood how it works, it was smooth sailing. Using both the app and the provided remote to test out each end of the temperature spectrum, we felt both super-cool and cozily warm. At over $1,000, itโs certainly an investment, but if you have the cash to spare and want truly customizable temperature regulation, youโll be more than satisfied.

Our Review Process
At Sleepopolis, our team of certified sleep science coaches and product experts personally tests each smart mattress topper. We assess how easy (or difficult) it is to get the smart mattress topper from the box to our bed. Given that smart toppers typically have a technological component, we also consider ease of use. Then, we evaluate the productโs materials for quality, fit, and feel. If the smart topper has a heating or cooling component, we also assess how well it regulates temperature. Finally, we have our tester spend time on the mattress topper to provide feedback on its feel and if it enhances their sleeping experience.

Chilipad 2.0 Smart Topper Overview

The Chilipadโs magic starts in its Hydrolayer: a thin, water-filled chamber. This chamber is supplied by the Dock, a fancy cube that heats or cools the water, depending on your needs and desires. After filling it, you can slide it under or behind your bed frame, out of sight.
The most notable addition to this model is the wireless remote. It rests on your nightstand and displays the temperature, ranging from 55 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit, like a miniature thermostat. With touchscreen controls, you can change the temperature of each side of your Chilipad when you donโt want to open your phone to use the app.
However, the free app (big bonus for no subscription fees) has a few more bells and whistles that we enjoyed. In addition to heating and cooling adjustments, you can also use it for partner-side control and an alarm that gradually warms the Chilipad as it approaches your wake-up time, gently coaxing you awake.
There are a few upgrades to the Chilipad 2.0โs design, too. For one, the topper now features all-around elastic for a better fit, allowing it to act as a mattress protector as well. The aforementioned Hydrolayer slides in and out more easily for quicker set-up and more hassle-free cleaning. On top of that, the 2.0 is available in more sizes, including twin XL and full.
The 2.0โs Dock was reconsidered and is almost completely silent. It now comes with a digital display, and it is easier to refill (and it needs to be refilled less frequently). Our in-house tester also noted that they appreciated that there was no on-dock onboarding and that they didnโt have to use the app to get the dock started.

Chilipad 2.0 In-Depth Test Results
Now that you have an idea of how the Chilipad works and what it can do for you, letโs go over how it performed in our tests. We evaluated everything from its construction to the company policies.
Value
A queen-size, dual-sided Chilipad will run you about $3,000. โThe Chilipad 2.0 is certainly an investment, but I feel the price is largely justified,โ said one of our lead reviewers, Kendall Spell. โSmart mattress toppers inherently command a premium over standard toppers, given the advanced materials and technology packed into them, and the ChiliPad 2.0 is no exception.โ
After considering her experience with this topper, Kendall ultimately awarded the Chillpad a 4-out-of-5 rating for value. โThe one reason Iโm holding back from a 5 is purely the price point,โ she explained. โThousands of dollars for a mattress topper is a hard pill to swallow for most people, and it does limit accessibility. But dollar for dollar, I feel like Iโm getting what I paid for, which is more than I can say for a lot of premium products at this price range.โ

Materials
Kendall noted that the Chilipad 2.0 has โa really premium feel to it.โ She said, โThe materials seem genuinely high quality and built to last; thereโs no sense that anything is going to fray, crack, or degrade quickly with regular use.โ She added that the tech makes it feel like a โstep upโ from your traditional mattress topper, which lends the materials a more luxurious feel.
Even with the various components of this smart topper, Kendall couldnโt feel any poking or prodding as she lay on the surface. โIt sits under a fitted sheet naturally and doesnโt bunch, shift, or create any weird texture that youโd feel through your bedding,โ she said. โThere were no odd ridges from the silicone tubing, which was a concern for me going in.โ

She also appreciated that it was machine-washable. This should reduce the risk of any mildew or buildup between water changes.
Kendall also looked at the quality of the accessories that came with it. The Dock, which acts as the water tank for the pad, felt โstudy and purposefully designed, rather than an afterthought,โ per Kendall. โThe build quality is solid. Nothing feels cheap or plasticky in a way that undercuts the premium price.โ
Based on her findings, she awarded the Chilipad 2.0 an impressive 4.5 out of 5 for its materials. Although everything is well-made, the complex setup and bulky dock could be an issue for folks who want something simple and sleek.
User Experience
While typical mattress toppers are pretty plug-and-play, minus the plug, the Chilipad 2.0 requires some time to get used to. Kendall said that using this system was a โlargely seamless experience overall,โ but noted that the physical setup process was a bit of a learning curve. As a result, she ultimately rated her user experience 4 out of 5.
Getting the Chilipad on the mattress was the most โinvolvedโ part of the experience. โThe topper is bulkier than a standard mattress topper, and getting it properly positioned and set up took more time and effort than expected,โ she explained. โItโs potentially worth having an extra set of hands for. While not a dealbreaker, itโs something to be aware of.โ

Youโll also have to set up the Dock, a cube-shaped tank that supplies heated or cooled water to the surface via a hose. You can easily follow the instructions that come with the Dock to fill the reservoir. It features a digital screen so you can see the temperature and when itโs time to refill. In operation, our testers could hear what sounded like a fan, but likened it to subtle white noise.
After Kendall had the Chilipad set up on the mattress, she found the experience much more straightforward. โI downloaded the Sleepme app easily, and onboarding was simple,โ she said. โThere were no glitches encountered during use, and I never had to delete and re-download it to get things working.โ
Kendall found that adjusting temperature and creating sleep schedules was โquick and intuitive.โ You can set your preferred temperatures at specific times of the night, including a wake-up function that gradually warms the bed when itโs time to rise. โEverything is logically laid out without having to dig through menus,โ Kendall added. The app also works with or without Wi-Fi, though Kendall noted a quicker response from the Chilipad when connected.

Unlike many other smart mattress systems, the Chilipad doesnโt require an app to function. It also comes with a separate remote. โThe remote is great for quick in-the-moment adjustments without reaching for your phone,โ Kendall said. โWhile both work well, the app edges out the remote for full functionality, offering more granular control and in-depth scheduling features.โ
Cooling/Heating
Kendall was impressed by how distinct both the cooling and heating features felt. โI expected everything to work, but I didnโt expect such a drastic and noticeable difference between the cool and hot sides of this topper,โ she explained. โNeither side bleeds into the other, and both hold steady throughout the night, never wavering in their temperature.โ Even the fitted sheet over the topper did little to hinder the effects.
She also liked the โwarm wake-upโ setting, which gradually increases the temperature as you approach your wake-up time. โItโs way better than a blaring alarm,โ she said. โYou donโt realize youโve been missing it until you have it, and then you donโt want to live without itโ

After initial testing, Kendall began to use the Chilipad nightly at home. โIt became a part of my routine quickly โ which I believe is the intention. It helps me sleep better and deeper.โ Based on her exceptional experience, she rated the Chilipadโs temperature regulation at a perfect 5 out of 5.
Comfort
In terms of how the Chilipad feels, it essentially blends into the surface of your mattress. โThe new model is soft and comfortable right out of the box, without feeling stiff or overly technical,โ Kendall said. โIt doesnโt feel like youโre sleeping on a piece of equipment, which was what I hoped for at this price point, but admittedly, it was still a pleasant surprise.โ Combined with the Chilipadโs cooling and heating features, comfort should be a breeze. Kendall ended up awarding it at a 5 out of 5.
If youโre after a mattress topper that significantly changes the firmness of your mattress, you wonโt get that from the Chilipad. There arenโt any dense foams or miniature coils to bolster the sleep surface, just effective temperature control. But if youโre not satisfied with your current bedโs feel, check out some of our favorite soft or firm mattress toppers.
Company Policies
Shopping online can be finicky, especially if youโre worried about trusting a product you canโt see or touch. The good news is that the Chilipad comes with some pretty generous company policies that make it easy to try out before you commit to purchasing.

The Chilipad 2.0 comes with a 2-year limited warranty (extended an extra year compared to the previous model) and a 30-night sleep trial. As long as you initiate a return within the 30-day period, youโll receive a full refund. Kendall thought both were โfair,โ rating the warranty at 4.5 out of 5 and the sleep trial at a perfect 5 out of 5.
Sleepme also offers free shipping to the contiguous United States. Standard shipping fees apply to Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. territories. This earned it another perfect score, contributing to the Chilipadโs final company policy rating of 4.8.
Unlike many other smart sleep systems, the Chilipad doesnโt require any subscription, nor is one offered. You get all the premium features upfront.
On the Sleepme website, thereโs a customer support hub with in-depth manuals, guides for troubleshooting, repairs, and FAQs. For detailed inquiries, you can contact support directly via email or phone (the latter is available from 9 AM to 9 PM EST on weekdays). Should you need to initiate a return, you can do so easily through the customer service portal.
Who Should Buy the Chilipad 2.0 and Who Shouldnโt
Youโve got a sense of how the Chilipad looks, feels, and performs, but maybe youโre still unsure whether itโs the right solution for better sleep. Hereโs who I recommend the Chilipad for, and who I think should stay away.
Buy It
- Hot sleepers dissatisfied with their current mattress will love the icy-cold feel of the Chilipadโs water-cooling system.
- Conversely, sleepers who run cool should also be able to make use of the bedโs heating function.
- If you share a bed with your partner and have different temperature preferences, you donโt have to compromise with the Chilipad. You can each have different temperatures on either side of the bed โ or if only one of you needs an adjustment, opt for the half-queen or half-king sizes.
Skip It
- Shoppers on a budget may balk at the Chilipadโs high price point, which starts out at over $1,000.
- If youโre looking to change the feel of your existing mattress, the Chilipad wonโt provide extra softness or support. Youโll still be able to feel your current mattress beneath it.

Smart Mattress Topper vs. Regular Mattress Topper
Some smart mattress toppers, like the Chilipad system, deviate so far from the norm that they can create a whole new sleep experience. Depending on your needs, you might fare better on a typical mattress topper, or you might benefit from this upgrade.
โRegular mattress toppers are typically used to revitalize saggy, old, or otherwise ill-suited mattresses,โ explains Dr. Raj Dasgupta, sleep science specialist. โThese are often beds that have gotten too soft to properly support you or perhaps too firm for your changing preferences.โ
Memory foam mattress toppers, for instance, tend to provide extra softness and pressure relief. Toppers with microcoils or latex can firm up a sleep surface to enhance support and spinal alignment.
โCooling toppers might be infused with cooling gel, copper, graphite, or specialized covers to wick away excess heat,โ adds Dr. Dasgupta. But these traditional toppers donโt feature any specialized, high-tech cooling. They also donโt track sleep metrics or automatically adjust the temperature based on your personal programming.
Aside from the fancy features like apps or remote controls, smart mattress toppers are going to cost a lot more than your standard topper. For some, the extra cash is worth it for the enhanced experience. Others may do well with a cheap mattress topper or one from Amazon that simply gets the job done.
Other Mattress Toppers to Consider
As I mentioned, weโve reviewed dozens of mattress toppers over the years. While the Chilipad certainly strives for innovation, there are some other great toppers we recommend that could fit the bill. Still unsure if itโs the one for you? Check out these other top picks:
Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Mattress Topper
This luxury topper offers a soft-but-supportive feel, thanks to its dense, cushy construction. Itโs infused with graphite to counteract the naturally heat-trapping nature of foam. Unlike the Chilipad, this topper should significantly affect how your mattress feels; it adds more contouring to your sleep surface while continuing to support the spine. This makes it one of our favorite mattress toppers for back pain. Though on the expensive side for a traditional topper, at around $300 for a queen, itโs still more affordable than the Chilipad.
Cozy Earth Bamboo Mattress Pad
Looking for cooler sleep without the fancy add-ons? Try out the Cozy Earth Bamboo Mattress Pad. This topper is made of 100-percent bamboo for a cool-to-the-touch feel and excellent moisture-wicking. As a cooling mattress pad, it wonโt offer any added support or softness to your current bed, but it will make things extra cool and soft at the surface. At under $200 for a queen-size, itโs also significantly cheaper than the Chilipad. Still, folks who run cold may find this a bit too chilly for their liking.
Orion Sleep System
Like the Chilipad, the Orion Sleep System uses water-based cooling technology to regulate temperature on either side of the mattress. But unlike the Chilipad, our testers found that it had a firmer feel that provided extra support on top of the mattress. The Orion Sleep System also offers AI-powered sleep tracking and improvement insights, but youโll have to pay for the subscription. They also donโt offer iterations that cover only half a mattress, or those that accommodate twin-XL and full-size mattresses.
