Often on social media, it can feel like people are constantly singing the praises of the Oura Ring. One influencer recently told viewers that the wearable tracker saved her life after helping her get diagnosed with sleep apnea.

Wearable fitness and sleep trackers, specifically wearable fitness and sleep trackers that double as rings, have exploded in popularity over the past few years. While the Oura Ring is perhaps the most famous example of these subtle, luxury fitness and sleep trackers, there are some other notable examples out on the market. For example, tech giant Samsung tried its hand at creating a smart ring with its aptly named Galaxy Ring

Recently, another Oura Ring competitor has caught some additional attention after an influencer named Oriana (@orianasiphanoum) made a series of videos detailing why she’s ditching her Oura Ring in favor of the Ultrahuman Ring. (1) She does note that while the videos that she’s making are not ads, she does have a discount code with the company. (2)

If you’re curious about why Oriana ended up opting for the Ultrahuman Ring after already purchasing an Oura Ring, read on.

Why Did Oriana Opt For The Ultrahuman Ring Instead Of The Oura Ring?

In the video where Oriana reveals that she returned her Oura Ring for the Ultrahuman Ring, she shares that “[she] wanted to switch the Ultrahuman Ring from the Oura Ring for a few reasons, but mainly because of the subscription.”  (1

If you’re unfamiliar, the Oura Ring does utilize a subscription-based program to unlock all of the features that the ring offers on top of the cost of the ring itself. The subscription will set you back about $5.99 a month, or $69.99 a year. However, according to Oura you will still have access to your sleep, readiness and activity scores if you decide to forego the subscription fee. The Ultrahuman Ring does not have a subscription-based program that unlocks its features. (3)

Additionally, Oriana says that she found the Ultrahuman Ring both lighter and thinner than the Oura Ring. Oriana goes on to say that she didn’t make the switch because she hated her Oura Ring, she just “didn’t like that [she] had to pay for subscriptions after the product itself is so expensive.” (1

How Does The Ultrahuman Ring Track Sleep Differently From The Oura Ring?

Oriana made a video breaking down the difference between the Oura Ring’s sleep tracking capabilities and the Ultrahuman Ring’s sleep tracking capabilities. One of the first features that Oriana highlights is that Ultrahuman Ring has a specific mode to accommodate alternative sleep schedules that might occur if you are someone who does shift work. (2) While Oura doesn’t have a feature that specifically accommodates the sleep schedule of shift workers it does have a nap detection mode which the company claims can “support diverse sleeping patterns.” (4)

Both rings use sleep scores to give you an idea of the quality of your sleep, and both apps show you when you went to sleep and when you woke up. One difference that Oriana points out is that Oura gives you insight into your heart rate while you sleep while Ultrahuman shows you how many sleep cycles you went through while you slept.

Oriana notes that there are some sleep tracking features on the Ultrahuman ring that she does not remember having on her Oura Ring, these features include: morning alertness, total tosses and turns, temperature, the ability to check on your sleep debt. (2

Another Ultrahuman Ring feature that Oriana shouts out is the caffeine window feature. She remarks that “It’ll show you the best window to have caffeine throughout your day, and it even gives a list of beverages and their respective bedtime caffeine thresholds.” (2)

Should I Buy The Ultrahuman Ring or the Oura Ring?

Ultimately the decision about whether or not you should purchase the Oura Ring or the Ultrahuman Ring comes down to what you want your wearable fitness and sleep tracker to do for you and your budget.

One thing to keep in mind if you’re choosing to use a fitness and sleep tracker is to make sure that your relationship with the tracker stays in a healthy place. Some people who use sleep and fitness trackers can experience something called orthosomnia, or an obsession with obtaining perfect sleep based on data from sleep trackers.

If you think your relationship with your sleep tracker has become unhealthy, then you should talk to your doctor or mental health provider.
