Is the Eli & Elm Side Sleeper Pillow a Good Pillow for You?

The Eli & Elm pillow is a neck pillow designed specifically for side sleeping. That means it’s going to be a good fit for some sleepers and a bad fit for others. Read on below to learn who should (and should not) consider buying this pillow.

Who should try the Eli & Elm Side Sleeper pillow

  • Side sleepers should really like this pillow! It offers great neck support and feels super comfortable in this position.
  • Back sleepers might also like the Eli & Elm pillow, especially if they struggle with neck pain.
  • Sleepers looking for a hypoallergenic pillow will be happy to hear that this pillow is antimicrobial, mildew-proof, and dust mite-resistant.

Who should not try the Eli & Elm Side Sleeper pillow

  • Stomach sleepers need a softer, flatter pillow to feel comfortable. I’d recommend they check out some of our best down pillows instead.
  • If you’re looking for a traditionally shaped pillow that fits into a standard pillowcase, this is not the pillow for you.
  • If you want a completely machine-washable pillow you won’t like the Eli & Elm. Its outer cover is machine-washable, but the inner pillow is not.

What Does the Eli & Elm Side Sleeper Pillow Feel Like?

Now that you know the basics, let’s get into detail about how this pillow feels. Below, I’ll break down the Eli & Elm’s firmness and loft.

Eli & Elm Side Sleeper Pillow Firmness

This pillow has a nice medium-firm feel. It’s thinner in the center than on the sides, so it puffs up nicely to support your head, especially when you’re lying on your side. It offered me a nice balance of springiness and support, but I felt generally “on top of” this pillow.

This pillow’s fill is adjustable, so if you don’t like that the side of the pillow is thicker than the center, you can reach in and adjust the filling to your liking. All in all, if you’re looking for a supportive, springy feel, you’ll probably like the feel of this pillow.

Eli & Elm Side Sleeper Pillow Loft

Firmness and loft are very closely related. A firmer pillow won’t compress as far under your weight, which means it will maintain its loft (aka its height) better overnight. The Eli & Elm pillow has a high loft of 5 inches at the sides, though it’s less lofty in the U-bend center. Its medium-firm feel means that it maintains its loft under your weight.

A medium-firm pillow with a high loft will work well for some sleepers and poorly for others. Take a look below to see how I felt on this pillow in a few different sleeping positions.

Side — This pillow felt great when I was on my side! It did a great job promoting a straight spinal alignment by keeping my head and neck in a neutral position. It also took some pressure off my shoulders, which is great for any side sleepers who struggle with shoulder pain.

Back — This pillow also felt supportive and comfortable when I was on my back. Its ergonomic shape could also help with neck pain in this position, so I’d recommend it to back sleepers as well.

Stomach — This is definitely not the pillow for stomach sleepers. Its firm, lofty feel meant my neck was craned up and thrown out of alignment with my spine in this position. I’d steer stomach sleepers to one of our best pillows for stomach sleepers instead.

Under the Arm — This pillow is not super moldable or fluffy, so I personally didn’t find it very comfortable for hugging between my arms. I’d recommend a body pillow, like the Coop Home Goods body pillow, if you’re looking for something fluffy and huggable.

Between the Legs — Personally, I found this pillow’s unique shape and less lofty center made it feel uncomfortable between my knees. It’s not one I’d recommend to sleepers who enjoy placing a pillow between their legs to reduce knee rub or help with hip alignment.

What is the Eli & Elm Side Sleeper Pillow Made Of?

Below, I’ll describe what this pillow is made of! It has three layers (all of which are antimicrobial, mildew proof, and dust mite resistant). I’ll go into depth about each below.

Cover — The Eli & Elm’s cover is made of a cotton, polyester, and spandex blend. This cover is removable and machine washable. It can be machine dried on low heat.

Interior Liner — Below that is a polyester blend interior liner. This liner features a zipper that opens about a third of the way across the pillow. It allows you to reach in and manipulate this pillow’s adjustable fill. Personally, I wished this zipper extended all the way across the width of the pillow, I found it hard to adjust the fill and loft as preferred when I could only reach in from one corner.

Fill — This pillow’s filling is made from natural latex noodles and polyester fiber. You can remove or add filling as preferred, which makes this an adjustable loft pillow. That’s a great perk for anyone who’s very particular about their preferred pillow loft and firmness. If you enjoy the feel of a latex pillow, check out our best latex pillows roundup.

Is the Eli & Elm Side Sleeper Pillow Good for Hot Sleepers?

So, are those materials cooling? In my opinion, yes! The latex filling in this pillow is very breathable, and the cotton cover also promotes some nice airflow. But if you’re looking to maximize breathability with some special cooling technology, I’d recommend checking out our best cooling pillows or best cooling sheets.
