Luxome LAYR Pillow Review (2026)

Pillows are rarely one-size-fits-all, but that’s the idea behind the Luxome LAYR. It’s designed for full customization, allowing sleepers to adjust firmness and height. But does that really mean the LAYR can accommodate sleepers of all shapes, sizes, and preferences? We put this pillow to the test, assessing its materials, price tag, ease of care, and the overall sleeping experience it delivered.

The Sleepopolis team has been evaluating mattresses and sleep products, including pillows, since 2014. We’ve used our medically informed review methodology to personally test over 300 mattresses and just as many sleep accessories, which has helped thousands of people find sleep staples that really meet their needs. Our reviews are also guided by the insights of our chief medical advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM.

After putting the Luxome LAYR through its paces, we found it really is highly customizable. That makes it a great fit for different sleep styles — and that’s hard for a single pillow to do. We were also impressed with its removable, washable cover and overall value. Keep reading for the ins and outs of the Luxome LAYR and our thoughts on why it’s a good choice for most sleepers.

Luxome LAYR Pillow Overview

The clue is in the name — the Luxome LAYR Customizable Pillow is made with three separate layers (or inserts) that can be rearranged or even removed to adjust the pillow’s firmness and height. Instead of choosing between different firmness levels and settling on a single option at checkout, you get to play around with soft, medium, and firm to see what works best.

The pillow comes preconfigured in what Luxome calls its most popular combination: the softest insert on one side, the medium insert on the other, with the firm insert sandwiched in the middle.

But customization is the name of the game, so you’re free to switch things around as it suits you. You can even fine-tune the adjustable fill to your liking. All the memory foam in the LAYR Pillow is infused with gel to combat heat retention, and it’s also certified by CertiPUR-US for added peace of mind. The cover is made of natural viscose from bamboo, which adds to the pillow’s cooling power. Plus, it’s machine washable.

The LAYR Pillow is really like several pillows in one, so the $150 price tag for a standard size ($180 for a king) offers good value. On the downside, there is no warranty for the LAYR, and it offers only a 30-day trial. If you find adjusting to new sleep products takes time, it’s worth knowing you only have a month to make up your mind about this pillow.

After completing a series of tests based on our review methodology and spending several nights using it, our in-house tester gave the Luxome LAYR Pillow a 5 out of 5 for the overall experience. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Luxome LAYR Pillow Materials

It’s clear that the pillow is made with high-quality materials. While it’s not technically a cooling pillow, the viscose cover is soft, cool to the touch, and temperature-regulating. Our tester spoke approvingly of the striking, contrasting gray weave around the perimeter. Viscose from bamboo helps reduce heat retention, which, like a cooling bed, is beneficial for those who sleep warm.

Inside, the adjustable inserts are snugly encased in their own removable covers. “Even when I was trying to figure out the configuration that I liked, which meant I was handling everything a lot, everything seemed no worse for the wear,” reported our tester. Overall, the pillow earned a 5-star material score.

Luxome LAYR Pillow Care

The washability of both the pillow cover and insert covers means it’s easy to keep the LAYR Pillow fresh and clean. Just keep in mind that the fill materials themselves aren’t washable, which is standard, especially for materials like memory foam and polyester.

Fortunately, our tester found that Luxome makes this very clear both on their website and in the packaging. The brand even provides spare covers for storing filling in the interim.

The covers can be machine-washed on a gentle cycle with like colors and tumbled dry on low or no heat.

Luxome LAYR Pillow care instructions can easily be found on the tags.

Another plus: “The brand provides another case with a zipper to store the extra inserts/stuffing, which was a nice touch,” noted our tester. They gave the Luxome 5 out of 5 for care.

Luxome LAYR Pillow Value

At first glance, the price seems high. A single standard pillow is $150 ($180 for a king-size), while a standard set is $225 ($270 for two kings). But as our tester notes, the LAYR really is an excellent pillow, falling well within the luxury category based on its materials, washability, and customization.

We gave the pillow 4.5 out of 5 in our value category because we think it delivers in all the ways that matter. We docked half a point to recognize the short sleep trial and lack of warranty.

How the Luxome LAYR Pillow Feels in Every Sleep Position

Our tester approached the LAYR Pillow as intended—by rearranging the layers to see what worked. Since it’s designed to be customized to suit individual needs, which means switching inserts around or removing them completely, it’s a little hard to rate performance and even the pillow in general.

Depending on how you configure it, the LAYR can be a firm pillow or a soft pillow. Still, our tester has thoughts on how the LAYR Pillow felt in all three sleeping positions.

Luxome LAYR Performance for Side Sleepers

“Side sleeping with this pillow is good, but not incredible,” reported our tester. However, he added that it could be a personal issue because of how their head was positioned (closer to the edge of the pillow than the center).

In any configuration, the LAYR pillow felt a little firmer than expected. “I think there is bunchier material from the ridges surrounding the stretchy ‘adjustable’ part of the cover and the zipper, and that’s the cause for this experience,” added our tester. “But it’s not a big detractor.”

Side sleepers who stick to the center of the pillow may find it works beautifully. That could also be the case, depending on how you stack the inserts.

Luxome LAYR Performance for Back Sleepers

Our tester must have found the ideal back-sleeping configuration, which they described as divine.  “My head feels cradled, supported, loved, even,” they raved. Speaking to its versatility and adjustability, they said it was like a Sleep Number mattress, but just for their head.

“It was cocooning my noggin, and if I could give it more than five stars for back sleeping, I would,” they said. Needless to say, we highly recommend this pillow for back sleepers.

Luxome LAYR Performance for Stomach Sleepers

Finding a comfortable pillow as a stomach sleeper can be difficult. This is because keeping the spine aligned requires a low-loft pillow, and this may not be the most appealing choice. However, the LAYR features high-quality materials and unique customization options.

“I appreciate the ability to adjust the loft of the pillow and think that will be great for stomach sleepers,” noted our tester. They stated that they prefer a pillow with a higher loft, but noted that they aren’t a stomach sleeper. “I prefer pillows with more height, but that can cause too much neck strain if you sleep on your belly.”

Fortunately, with the Luxome LAYR, stomach sleepers can adjust it to strike a balance between comfort and alignment.

My Final Thoughts About the Luxome LAYR

While the Luxome LAYR delivers on adjustability and versatility, it may still not be the perfect pillow for everyone. Here’s who’s likely to love this pillow, and who might want to keep shopping. (In that case, we recommend starting with our picks of the best pillows.)

Who I Recommend the Luxome LAYR  For

  • People who are willing to play around with the inserts to dial in firmness and height.
  • Hot sleepers who will benefit from the cooling cover material and gel-infused foam.

Who I Don’t Recommend the Luxome LAYR  For

  • Combination sleepers. Customizing this pillow to a specific sleep style, like your side,, means it’s likely to underperform if you end up on your stomach at some point in the night,
  • Budget shoppers. While we think the value is definitely there, the price tag may put this pillow out of reach for some people.

Luxome LAYR vs. Competitors

When shopping for a new pillow, it can be helpful to weigh the pros and cons of one contender against competitors. Let’s see how the LAYR stacks up to other popular pillows on the market.

Luxome LAYR vs. Pillow Cube Side Cube

The Pillow Cube Side Cube is a side-sleeper pillow, but our tester found it surprisingly comfortable for back sleeping as well. The cube-shaped pillow is tall and squishy — a literal cube of solid memory foam with impressive pressure relief for neck pain, and it also managed to stay fairly temperature-neutral. We think it’s a good option for combination sleepers as well, as long as they don’t end up on their stomach.

  • Sleeping position: While back and side sleepers should both be comfortable, stomach sleepers will fare far better with the adjustable LAYR.
  • Care: The covers on both pillows can be machine-washed for easy care.
  • Price: The Cube is significantly less expensive at $69.99 and offers a longer return window of 60 days.

Pillow Cube Side Cube

The Pillow Cube Side Sleeper Pro a great pillow for side sleepers. We tested the 5-inch loft version, but I’d say the 4-inch is best for those with narrow shoulders, while those with broad shoulders will want to go for the 6-inch version.

Luxome LAYR vs TEMPUR-Neck Pillow

The TEMPUR-Neck Pillow, like the Pillow Cube, has a non-traditional shape, with a contoured bump for neck support. It’s an ergonomic molded memory foam pillow with a little extra lift that accommodates side sleepers nicely. Fans of a traditional pillow that they can adjust to their preferences will prefer the LAYR, but dedicated side sleepers who don’t want to fiddle with inserts may want to go with the TEMPUR.

  • Sleeping position: Both pillows work for side and back sleepers, though the TEMPUR-Neck Pillow is probably more comfortable for side sleeping. Stomach sleepers should opt for the LAYR to ensure an appropriate height.
  • Care: Both pillows have removable and washable covers, making care straightforward.
  • Price: The Tempur is $99 for a small, $109 for a medium, and $129 for a large, so it’s the cheaper option. It also comes with a 5-year warranty but cannot be returned.

Other Models from Luxome

If you aren’t interested in an adjustable pillow, Luxome has two other pillows in its line-up. Here’s how they compare to the LAYR.

Luxome LAYR vs Luxome Dual Chamber

Luxome’s Dual Chamber pillow combines two separate fills for a comfy, balanced feel. The outer chamber is made with a down alternative for softness, while the inner chamber has a blend of latex “noodles” and down alternative to deliver more support.

  • Sleeping position: The Dual Chamber isn’t adjustable, so it’s not as versatile for different sleepers. Given its materials and construction, it’s likely a better choice for back and side sleepers than those who sleep on their stomachs.
  • Care: Like the LAYR, the outer cover of the Dual Chamber pillow can be machine-washed. The polyester insert is spot clean only and should be removed before the cover is washed.
  • Price: The Dual Chamber is $80 for a standard and $95 for a king, making it the more affordable buy. Both pillows are sold individually or in packs of two.

Luxome LAYR vs Luxome Faux Fur Pillow

The Luxome Faux Fur Pillow is less of a sleeping pillow and more of a decorative piece. The brand recommends it for use on beds, sofas, and lounging areas. It comes with a decorative pillow insert or as the cover alone.

  • Sleeping position: The Faux Fur Pillow is sold in three sizes (13” x 21”, 20” x 20”, and 24” x 24”) that are better for lounging than actually sleeping. The LAYR is the better choice for side, back, and stomach sleeping.
  • Care: The Faux Fur Pillow cover is spot- or dry-clean only. The option insert can be machine-washed on cold and tumbled dry on medium heat.
  • Price: The Faux Fur Pillow cover and insert are priced at $105, $145, and $175, depending on size. The cover alone is $65, $80, or $95. There are three colors available as well.

Our Review Process

At Sleepopolis, our team of certified sleep science coaches of different body types and sleep preferences personally test each mattress and accessory. We start by unboxing the product to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, pressure relief, and more. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress or accessory.
