Is the TEMPUR-Neck a Good Pillow for You?
Depending how you sleep, you’ll have different wants and needs from your pillow. So let’s go over who I recommend the TEMPUR-Neck pillow for.
Who should try the TEMPUR-Neck pillow
- Back sleepers should find the TEMPUR-Neck to provide comfortable neck support without causing any craning.
- Side sleepers will also likely appreciate the firm support the TEMPUR-Neck provides, which will help to keep their necks in line with their spines.
- If you like the slow-sinking-in a memory foam pillow offers, but also prefer a firm feel from your pillow, you’ll probably like the TEMPUR-Neck.
Who should not try the TEMPUR-Neck pillow
- Hot sleepers might not like the TEMPUR-Neck, as the memory foam traps heat very easily.
- Stomach sleepers definitely should not go for the TEMPUR-Neck pillow, as it will only cause their necks to crane upward.
- If you want a moldable, soft pillow, the TEMPUR-Neck isn’t a great option for you.
What Does the TEMPUR-Neck Pillow Feel Like?
I tested the TEMPUR-Neck pillow out by actually sleeping on it, so here are my takeaways on how it feels. But keep in mind that feel is subjective, so you might have a different experience than me.
TEMPUR-Neck Pillow Firmness
Every sleeping position generally will be most comfortable with a different pillow firmness: a firm feel for side sleepers, a soft feel for stomach sleepers, and a medium feel for back sleepers.
Overall, I thought the TEMPUR-Neck was pretty firm. That makes sense, as Tempur-Pedic markets it as “extra-firm.” However, despite being firmer than other Tempur-Pedic pillows I’ve tested, the TEMPUR material foam still allows you to sink into the pillow for some cozy contouring.
TEMPUR-Neck Pillow Loft
Just like firmness, each sleeping position is generally best suited to a different pillow loft, or height.
The TEMPUR-Neck comes in three different sizes — small, medium, and large — which vary in loft. However, it’s important to note that the lofts of the TEMPUR-Neck pillow refer to the highest point of the pillow, since it has a curved shape. The high point is where your neck is intended to rest, so the loft will be lower where your head rests.
The small size has a loft of 3.5 inches, the medium size has a loft of 4 inches, and the large size has a loft of 4.75 inches at the highest point.
Tempur-Pedic has a size chart based on the distance between your neck and shoulder to help you determine which size you should get. All you have to do is grab a tape measure and measure from the edge of your neck to your shoulder.
If the distance is 4” or less, they recommend the small size. If the distance is between 4-6”, they recommend the medium size for side sleepers and small size for back sleepers. If it’s 6-10”, they recommend the large size for side sleepers and the medium size for back sleepers. And if it’s over 10”, they recommend the large size. I measured myself and the distance between my neck and shoulder is about 5.5”, so I would want the small size, since I am a back sleeper.
Side — I found the TEMPUR-Neck to be quite comfortable for side sleeping. I usually recommend a high loft and a firm feel for side sleepers, and the TEMPUR-Neck provides just that. The height of the neck support side will help to keep side sleepers’ necks in line and supported. The firm foam also is great for offering additional support.
Back — I also thought the TEMPUR-Neck worked well for back sleeping. The molded shape was effective for keeping my neck supported, while not elevating my head too much. Normally I recommend a medium loft and medium firmness for back sleepers, so the TEMPUR-Neck is a bit firmer than I usually recommend, but I think the ergonomic shape is effective at following the natural curve of your body, so the firmness doesn’t make a big difference. I would definitely make sure to follow the sizing guidelines though, so you don’t choose a pillow that will cause your neck to crane upwards while lying on your back.
Stomach — For stomach sleepers, I generally recommend choosing a pillow with a soft feel and low loft to prevent neck pain and that’s basically the opposite of the TEMPUR-Neck, which is why neither I nor Tempur-Pedic recommend this pillow for stomach sleepers.
Under the Arm — I don’t think the TEMPUR-Neck is the best for sleeping with it under your arm, as the shape is uneven and it’s quite firm, so it’s not very huggable.
Between the Legs — I also don’t think it’s the best pillow for putting between your legs, again, because it is a contour pillow with an uneven shape.

The TEMPUR-Neck pillow has just two main components: the cover and core. Let’s go over what they’re each made of.
Cover: The TEMPUR-Neck has a polyester knit cover. It’s hypoallergenic, removable, and machine washable. It has a zipper along the edge that allows you to take it off the foam core.
Core: The pillow’s core is a piece of TEMPUR material foam, which is Tempur-Pedic’s proprietary memory foam. Its molded into a wavy shape, which is meant to support the natural curvature of the body. The foam core is covered in polyester netting.
Is the TEMPUR-Neck Pillow Good for Hot Sleepers?
Memory foam is known for trapping heat easily because it molds around you by absorbing your body heat. Because of that natural heat-trapping, the TEMPUR-Neck isn’t the best option for hot sleepers. When I was testing the TEMPUR-Neck, I didn’t notice it being overly hot, but it definitely didn’t feel particularly cool. However, I did feel the foam contouring and molding around me, so I can tell it was soaking up some heat.

If a supportive pillow is what you’re after, the TEMPUR-Neck is a great, high-quality pillow option. It’s a firm pillow, but it still allows for some pressure relief by sinking into the memory foam. And the molded shape is effective at providing neck support for back and side sleepers. I especially appreciate that Tempur-Pedic offers the pillow in multiple sizes to ensure that the ergonomic design works for people of different sizes and body types.
I also like that the TEMPUR-Neck has a washable cover, as that’ll help you keep your pillow nice and clean.
However, this pillow probably isn’t a great choice for hot sleepers, as the memory foam does trap heat. It’s also not a good option for stomach sleepers, as the rounded shape will only cause their necks to crane upwards. Additionally, if you like an extra-soft pillow that you can really cozy into and mold around you, the TEMPUR-Neck’s firm, ergonomic form isn’t probably the best fit for you.

TEMPUR-Neck Pillow Vs
Now let’s compare the TEMPUR-Neck pillow to another Tempur-Pedic pillow: the TEMPUR-Cloud.
TEMPUR-Neck Pillow vs TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow
- The TEMPUR-Cloud pillow is another Tempur-Pedic pillow and is actually the brand’s most popular model. I thought the TEMPUR-Cloud had a medium firmness and that the foam really allowed you to sink in deeply for some cozy contouring.
- I found it to be a comfortable pillow in every sleeping position, making it a versatile pillow and a great option for combination sleepers.
- However, like the TEMPUR-Neck, it’s not the best pillow option for hot sleepers, as it does tend to trap heat.
