Looking for a more luxurious place to rest your head at night? You might be able to find one without booking a 5-star hotel. The right silk pillowcase can effectively transform your bed into a personal retreat by offering smooth, crisp comfort and benefits for your skin and haircare routine.

As our chief medical advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, explains, “Silk is a breathable and moisture-wicking material. Its smoothness causes less friction than other materials, which can prevent hair breakage and enhance skin hydration. It’s also a very durable material.”

Our product testers got hands-on with the most popular best sellers to determine which ones were worth the money. We used each one for several nights and washed them according to the instructions to assess their performance over time.

Since 2014, we have helped over 60,000 readers and sleepers find the best beds and accessories for their needs. We have tested more than 330 beds and sleep products in our Charlotte, NC, studio using our rigorous review methodology, including the pillowcases on this list.

Read on to see the real silk pillowcases that impressed us most during testing.

What I Looked For in Silk Pillowcases

Our team used a consistent review methodology to assess how each pillowcase performs in real-world conditions. For this list, we highlighted durability, fit, and feel to ensure readers are getting the most well-rounded and comfortable options.

  • Durability: We closely examined the materials of every pillowcase to determine if they would hold up over time. Our product testers closely analyzed the quality of its stitching and fabric to ensure buyers get a product that resists fraying, tearing, and wear after repeated use and washing.
  • Fit: Fit describes how well the pillowcase conforms to the pillow. If the pillowcase is designed for a standard queen-sized pillow, it should fit that size without being too loose or too tight. A poor fit can lead to bunching or sagging at night, which can be distracting when trying to fall asleep.
  • Feel: Feel refers to the overall comfort and texture of the pillowcase against your skin and hair. Our testers used this as an opportunity to see if each pillowcase matched the manufacturer’s claims. For instance, pillowcases advertised as breathable and cooling shouldn’t make our testers overheat.

Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Pillowcase – Best Silk Pillowcase Overall

The Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Pillowcase is our top pick for the best silk pillowcase because it elevates every pillow it touches at a reasonable price. Product tester Nicole Davis praised its soft yet durable feel and the positive effects it had on her hair after spending several nights with it. She gave it a 4 out of 5 or higher in our durability, fit, and feel categories.

At $69, this Brooklinen pillowcase is surprisingly affordable compared to other options that use Mulberry silk in their construction. Despite its affordability, it doesn’t skimp out on quality. During testing, Nicole gave its durability a 4 out of 5 for its high-quality stitching and luxurious, cool-to-the-touch feel.

“This pillowcase has held up well so far,” Nicole said. “I’ve hand-washed it three times so far, and it looks as good as new! The reviews are also overwhelmingly positive about the quality of this pillowcase, which is a good sign.”

Nicole was also pleased with its fit on her standard queen-sized pillow, awarding it a perfect 5 out of 5 in this category. She noted that it was able to wrap around her pillow just fine with no excess fabric that bunched up beneath her as she slept.

“This fits perfectly and there’s a lip on one side where you can tuck the fabric over so your pillow isn’t exposed,” Nicole said. “It fits very snugly, so there’s no weird tail or extra floppy fabric you can sometimes get. Very high end.”

Most importantly, though, Nicole gave the Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Pillowcase a perfect 5 out of 5 in our overall feel category. In her own words, this pillow was nothing short of life-changing.

“My life has changed after trying this pillowcase,” Nicole said. “Okay, that’s dramatic, but I really enjoy it. It truly feels luxurious, and my hair looks shinier when I wake up in the morning. I was initially concerned about the care instructions, but hand washing this pillowcase with cold water is super easy, and you hang it to air dry. This pillowcase is a nice and affordable luxury upgrade for your bedding.”

Despite the Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Pillowcase excelling across the board for Nicole, it might not be the best fit for everyone. Unfortunately, if you happen to fall into this category, you’re subject to paying a $9.95 restocking fee upon returning this pillowcase.

Quince Mulberry Silk Pillowcase – Best Mulberry Silk Pillowcase

Mulberry silk is often considered the highest quality silk because of its exceptional durability and smoothness. If you’re looking for ways to add hotel-like luxury to your bedroom, you’re likely going to want to invest in Mulberry silk. The Quince Mulberry Silk Pillowcase is our favorite pillowcase in this category because it’s comfortable, cooling, and long-lasting. Most importantly, it is a one-hundred-percent pure Mulberry silk pillowcase. Product tester Cait Giddings gave this pillowcase a 4 out of 5 or higher in our feel, fit, and durability categories.

A real Mulberry silk pillowcase should be able to pass the feel test. This type of pillowcase should not feel cheap, scratchy, or uncomfortable. Fortunately, the Quince is the real deal, so it was comfy and buttery smooth from the beginning. During testing, Cait gave it a near-perfect 4.5 out of 5 in the feel category.

“This pillowcase feels soft, smooth, and glossy to the touch,” Cait said. “It’s everything a silk pillowcase should be. However, the slickness of the material, combined with the buoyant loft of my latex pillow, made it challenging for me to rest on top of it without sliding off.”

Despite Cait being unable to keep her head on straight atop this pillowcase, it did not stop her from giving it a 4 out of 5 in the fit category. She liked that it was able to fit around her bouncy latex pillow without falling off or ejecting the pillow onto the floor in the middle of the night.

“I have a queen-sized pillow, and the pillowcase fits loosely but well,” Cait said. “I like that the pillowcase has a zipper to fully seal in the pillow so that it doesn’t slide off the case.”

The Quince Mulberry Silk Pillow’s strongest suit, however, is its durability, which earned a perfect 5 out of 5. According to Cait, the material and zipper on this pillow feel very durable and unlikely to tear. She also appreciated that it has a STANDARD 100 OEKO-TEX certification, meaning it is made without the use of harmful chemicals or pesticides.

The only real drawbacks this pillowcase has are that it tends to be doubly slippery with certain types of pillows (like Cait’s latex model). Cait also noted that it didn’t do anything to help her frizzy hair and bedhead in the morning. Aside from those two shortcomings, she highly recommended it to folks looking for a cool, comfortable, and smooth surface to sleep on.

Casaluna Standard Silk Pillowcase – Best Affordable Silk Pillowcase

Casaluna Standard Silk Pillowcase

Casaluna Standard Silk Pillowcase

The silk feel of this elegant pillowcase not only feels great — it can offer basic hair and skin protection.

If you’re like me and you’re always on the hunt for the best deal (even when shopping for luxury items), then the Casaluna Standard Silk Pillowcase is the best silk pillowcase you’ll find for under $50. After spending several nights with this pillowcase and breaking it in, I found that it is a smooth and durable option for those looking to level up their bedroom without taking out a loan. I gave this pillowcase a 4 out of 5 or higher in feel, durability, and fit.

I was initially skeptical about its $30 price tag; however, the Casaluna Standard Silk Pillowcase exceeded my expectations. After hand washing it and using it for a few nights, it softened up and felt smooth to lie on. I gave it a 4 out of 5 for feel, knocking off a point because it took a little time to break in, and it didn’t feel as cool as some of the other options on this list.

Another thing I want to highlight about this pillowcase is its durability, which I gave a perfect 5 out of 5. For something that you can find at your local Target, this thing feels built like a tank. Despite being breathable, the silk feels quite thick, and the stitching appears to be of good quality. I didn’t see a thread out of place, even after a few washes and frequent use.

However, the fit of this pillowcase gave me mixed thoughts, ultimately earning a 4 out of 5 in this category. While I appreciate that you get a lot of pillowcases for the money, I knocked a point because my standard queen-sized pillow looked like it was wearing a dress with all the excess fabric that was dangling off of it. I had to find a way to fold it so that it didn’t look like a sack of potatoes. However, if you have a longer pillow with a lot of stuffing you should have no trouble enveloping it.

Overall, this was $30 well spent. It doesn’t feel quite as buttery smooth or cool as some of the other options on this list that use Mulberry silk, but it’s a noticeable step up from your average cotton pillowcase.

Cozy Earth Silk Pillowcase – Best Cooling Silk Pillowcase

Cozy Earth Silk Pillowcase

Cozy Earth Silk Pillowcase

Constructed with silk and bamboo-derived viscose and silk, this pillowcase helps you stay cool and dry with its natural materials.

If you’re a hot sleeper who associates silk with a cool, crisp feel, then the Cozy Earth Silk Pillowcase is the option you have been dreaming of. Product tester Melanie Kassel praised its lightweight yet luxurious feel that allowed her to wake up refreshed and sweat-free. She gave this pillowcase a 4 out of 5 or higher in our feel, durability, and fit categories.

Right off the bat, Melanie could tell that the Cozy Earth Silk Pillowcase was different from many of its competitors. She gave it a perfect 5 out of 5 rating in our feel category, praising its lightweight and breathable feel that endured after spending several nights with it on her pillowcase.

“The silk is much smoother and lighter than other silk pillowcases,” Melanie said. “If you’re not fond of how slippery silk can feel, you might not like it, but it certainly feels luxurious. It also retains a feeling of freshness and cleanliness, even after several days of use.”

Despite it being on the thinner side to cool things down, the Cozy Earth Silk Pillowcase doesn’t cut corners when it comes to materials. Melanie gave this pillowcase another 5 out of 5 in our durability category because of how well it has held up for her so far after numerous washes and repeated use.

“The pillowcase seems quite durable, even though silk is a thinner fabric,” Melanie said. “My impression is that this is a high-quality pillowcase that should last for years. It hasn’t developed any stains or even the faintest signs of wear and tear after nightly use for almost two months.”

Last but not least, Melanie gave the Cozy Earth Silk Pillowcase a strong 4 out of 5 for its fit. She noted that while the standard size was a little big on her pillow, it was only a minor inconvenience. After a few easy tweaks, she was able to make sure that her pillow was snugly inside without peeking out.

Aside from a slightly larger-than-average fit, the only drawback to consider before purchasing this silk pillowcase is its premium price tag. At $100 for a standard pillowcase, it might be steep for budget shoppers. However, if you’re looking for a luxurious and temperature-regulating pillowcase that will endure regular use, it is well worth the investment.

Other Silk Pillowcases I Considered

The following silk fabric pillowcases came close to earning a spot on my main list; however, they barely lost to a couple of my top picks. While they didn’t quite earn a spot on our list, they’re still worthy options that could be a good fit for certain sleepers.

Coop Sleep Goods Silk Pillowcase

Our product tester enjoyed using the Coop Sleep Goods Silk Pillowcase because of its luxurious feel and impressive ability to help tame frizz and keep skin soft. Its lightweight 16.5 momme silk also makes it breathable, which is a plus for hot sleepers. However, it didn’t make our main list because it was a tight fit on their pillow, and we would rather a pillowcase be a little too large than a little too small.

MYK Silk Cotton Pillowcase

The MYK Silk Cotton Pillowcase’s clever design made it a joy for our testers to use. It’s also available on Amazon at a fraction of the cost of a full-silk option, plus a wide range of fun color choices. This silk and cotton hybrid is a solid pick for budget-conscious shoppers who still want to reap the beauty and hair benefits of silk. However, we left it off our main list because the underside is cotton, which isn’t quite as luxurious as a pure silk pillowcase.

How We Picked and Tested These Silk Pillowcases

As you might guess, when testing each silk pillowcase, we pay attention to how they look, feel, and withstand daily use. Our product testers used and washed every pillowcase according to its manufacturer’s guidelines, and ranked them based on three crucial factors: durability, fit, and feel.

Durability

Our testers based their durability scores on how well the pillowcase held up after regular use and numerous cleanings. They examined the fabric’s construction, stitching, and overall resilience. Aside from sleeping with each pillowcase every night, some of these tests included pulling and stretching the pillowcase around a pillow to find weak points and signs of fraying, pilling, or seam separation.

Pillowcases that felt flimsy or quickly showed wear and tear were not included on this list. Meanwhile, we considered pillowcases that felt sturdy, well-made, and capable of lasting for years. We also noted any certifications for safety or sustainability when present.

Fit

The ideal pillowcase should fit snugly without scrunching up your pillow into weird shapes. When testing these silk pillowcases, we paid attention to how well our pillows fit into the pillowcase, noting how easily they slipped on and whether the fabric stayed smooth or bunched up.

The silk pillowcases that secured the pillow and stayed in place throughout the night excelled in this category. Meanwhile, we disqualified those that were too loose, too tight, or required frequent adjustments.

Feel

Although comfort is highly subjective, we still compared the product descriptions of each pillow (whether it was cooling, breathable, or cozy) to our actual testing experience. We also noted what type of sleepers might enjoy it most.

Generally, pillowcases that felt scratchy were rated low and removed from the running. Every pillowcase on this list delivers on its promise of being silky-smooth, luxurious, or cooling.

What to Consider When Buying a Silk Pillowcase

Before adding the silk pillowcase you have been eyeing for weeks to your cart, there are a few things to investigate to ensure that it holds up over time. Here are a few other factors to consider before you buy.

Silk Grade and Momme Count

Believe it or not, there are some not-so-great silk pillowcases out there. Paying attention to the grade and type of the silk can help you avoid making a regrettable purchase. For example, Mulberry silk is known for being smoother and more durable than other options. Many consider it to be the gold standard in the silk bedding world.

Another factor you can check is the momme count. While not all manufacturers provide this information, momme count is used to measure the density and weight of the silk (sort of like thread counts for cotton).

Higher momme weights (or counts) typically signify thicker, more durable silk. However, lower momme counts can also feel lighter and more breathable for hot sleepers. This mostly boils down to personal preference, as some sleepers prefer a heavier, more substantial feel, while others prefer airy silk for better cooling.

Care Instructions

Silk is a delicate textile that can be daunting to take care of. If possible, check the manufacturer’s care guidelines before buying. While you can get away with washing some silk pillowcases in your washing machine on a gentle cycle, others require hand-washing or dry cleaning to preserve the fibers and sheen. Knowing this before you spend any money will help prevent you from buying something that does not fit your laundry routine.

In some cases, diligently following the care instructions for bedding can also help you avoid voiding the warranty. Many brands explicitly state that improper washing or drying can lead to damage that they will not cover. In other words, tossing your lustrous silk bedding in with your work pants or soccer equipment could cost you a lot more than you expect.

Customer Reviews

Be sure to comb through the customer reviews before finalizing your purchase. Reviews can fill in many blanks left out of the product description. For example, customers may talk about how the pillowcase fits different pillow sizes, whether the color matches the photos, or if the fabric holds up after multiple washes.

More importantly, patterns can tell you about common issues. If there are lots of dissatisfied customers mentioning fraying seams, wonky zipper closures, or fading, that’s worth noting.

Also, use the search function (if available) to find reviews from people with similar needs to your own. If you tend to overheat at night, for example, you can use the search function to filter feedback from other hot sleepers to determine if the pillowcase stays cool through the night.

Silk Pillowcases FAQs

Is silk hypoallergenic?

Yes, silk is naturally hypoallergenic. Silk is known to resist common allergens like dust mites, mold, and mildew. Its tightly woven fibers are less likely to harbor bacteria, making it a great choice for folks with allergies or sensitive skin.

What is Mulberry silk?

Mulberry silk comes from silkworms that are fed an exclusive diet of mulberry leaves. It’s considered the highest-quality silk and is often used in luxury bedding.

What is charmeuse silk?

Charmeuse is a type of weave that gives fabric a glossy, lustrous front and a soft, matte back. It can also use synthetic fibers, so not all charmeuse is created equal.

How is a silk pillowcase different from a satin pillowcase?

Silk is a natural protein fiber that comes from silkworms. Satin refers to a type of weave that can be made from silk or synthetic fibers like polyester. Satin typically lacks the same breathability, durability, and moisture-retaining benefits of 100-percent pure silk.

Can silk pillowcases help with your skincare?

Yes, silk pillowcases can help acne-prone or sensitive skin. Silk helps create less friction, which can reduce the risk of irritation and breakouts.

Can you machine wash a silk pillowcase?

Some silk pillowcases are machine washable, but check the care label to be sure. Washing silk incorrectly can cause it to snag, crease, or tangle. If it is machine washable, wash it on a gentle cycle with mild detergent and a mesh laundry bag.

What are the benefits of silk on hair?

Silk’s smooth surface reduces friction, which can help minimize tangles, frizz, and breakage, especially for fine hair or curly hair. It’s also less absorbent than cotton so it won’t strip away your hair’s natural oils.
