In this review, I’ll be comparing two high-quality mattresses: the Saatva Classic and the DreamCloud Original. One’s made of supportive layers of coils and considered a luxury innerspring mattress, while the other’s a combination of foam and coils and considered a luxury hybrid mattress. Both are popular options in the snooze world, but which one’s going to give you the best sleep experience?

In this mattress comparison, I hope to help you decide. I’m going to compare different aspects of both these beds, from their materials to their firmness levels to their mattress companies’ customer service.

Saatva vs DreamCloud Video Review

Looking for a quick rundown of each mattress and who I recommend them for? Check out my Saatva vs DreamCloud video review below.

Saatva vs DreamCloud: Top Similarities

  • Price: These mattresses are in a similar price range, so you’ll be able to focus on the features of these beds when choosing the best mattress for you.
  • Feel: Both of these beds have a more traditional feel, so sleepers who don’t love the “bed-in-a-box” feel might like them.
  • Edge support: Both mattresses have great edge support, which means you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the edges of these beds without feeling their sides collapsing under your weight.

Saatva vs DreamCloud: Top Differences

  • Construction: The Saatva is not a bed-in-a-box and will not be delivered compressed. The DreamCloud will ship compressed in a box. Depending on what you find convenient, you might prefer one shipping method over the other.
  • Firmness: The DreamCloud is firmer than the Saatva. We gave the DreamCloud a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale and the Saatva a 6.5 out of 10.
  • Responsiveness: The Saatva feels a little bouncier than the DreamCloud, which might be a bonus for combination sleepers.

Saatva vs DreamCloud: Construction & Feel Differences

Now that you know the major similarities and differences between the Saatva and DreamCloud, let’s discuss what these beds feel like. To determine what these beds feel like, we will explore numerous categories, including firmness level, pressure relief, sinkage, motion transfer, and bounce.

As we dive into this discussion, remember that some factors are subjective. How I judge a bed could differ from how you would.

What’s the Firmness Difference?

When it comes to mattresses, firmness isn’t a one-size-fits-all scenario. Your size, weight, shape, and other factors all determine your ideal level of firmness, meaning your preferences will likely differ from mine. When testing a mattress for firmness, we try to capture the variance different people might feel. I test every bed with colleagues of various body shapes, types, and sizes, then average those responses to determine the final firmness score.

My colleagues and I decided to give the Saatva mattress a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which is right at the industry standard for most mattresses.

Saatva Classic Firmness 6.5 1024x303 1
The Saatva Classic is a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

The DreamCloud earned a 7 out of 10. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear this bed is on the firmer side of things.

Firmness 7 1
The DreamCloud is a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

What Does Each Mattress Feel Like?

Since the Saatva is an innerspring mattress, most people should find it supportive and responsive. When trying out the Saatva for myself, I felt a good amount of support on this mattress, primarily because of its two layers of coils.

I also noticed that the Saatva has quite a bit of bounce. This is good news for anyone looking for that classic innerspring feel. However, a responsive mattress typically means higher motion transfer and the Saatva is no exception. This means you will likely feel your partner moving on the other side of the bed.

Meanwhile, the DreamCloud mattress strikes an excellent balance between pressure relief and support. While testing out the DreamCloud mattress, I experienced some nice sinkage from the quilted cover and top layer of memory foam. I also noticed plenty of bounce and lift from the pocketed coil system.

This combination could work well for a wide range of sleepers, especially those who want to feel “on top” of their bed like back or combination sleepers. Strict side sleepers, however, may find that the DreamCloud is too firm for their needs.

How Does The Construction Differ?

Saatva vs DreamCloud Per Body Type

Saatva vs DreamCloud Comparing Mattress Performance

Temperature

Several factors can impact a bed’s cooling ability. One of the first things I consider is its construction. Since both the Saatva and DreamCloud have layers of pocketed coils, they allow plenty of room for air to flow through them and keep them cool.

I tested both mattresses’ cooling features using our thermal gun. After laying on each for a few minutes and measuring how much heat each one trapped, I found that the DreamCloud mattress performed better overall. The DreamCloud has gel infusions, which help the bed sleep super-cool. Its wrapped coils encourage airflow because there’s so much space between the springs.

Overall, both mattresses did a decent job of cooling things down. The Saatva went up 9 degrees Fahrenheit when using our trusty thermal gun. This increase in temperature is likely due to the Saatva mattress not having any specialized cooling features, like gel-infused foams.

Motion Isolation

If you have a restless partner, you’ll want something with better motion isolation so you don’t feel their movements on your side of the bed. If that’s not an issue, or you’re a combination sleeper who switches between different positions throughout the night, a more bouncy and responsive mattress is a plus.

To measure each bed’s motion transfer, I perform a few tests to determine if a mattress is good at isolating movement in one spot. One of those tests consists of dropping a steel ball from various heights and measuring the disturbance it causes using a seismometer.

During this test, I found that both mattresses transfer a lot of motion to the other side of the bed. While the Saatva and the DreamCloud are great options for combination sleepers and couples who use the entire surface area of the bed, I would opt for a mattress with better motion isolation if you have a partner who wakes easily.

Edge Support

When testing the edge support on the Saatva and DreamCloud, I didn’t experience much sinkage as I sat on the edge of both mattresses. However, I thought the Saatva mattress performed better between the two. The Saatva uses a reinforced edge support system that combines coils and firm polyfoam, leading to fantastic results. When I measured the sinkage with a yardstick, the layers of the Saatva sank less than a half inch under my weight. The DreamCloud also has solid edge support, thanks to its pocketed coil layer.

Pressure Relief

For our pressure relief test, we use a specialized mat to measure how much pressure the mattresses put on different body parts. The mat, or pressure map, creates a graphic or “map” of the body using color-coded imagery.

Areas with low pressure buildup are blue and green, and areas with high pressure buildup are yellow and red. As you can see on the map below, there is a lot of blue and green, indicating that the Saatva mattress is good at relieving pressure.

PressureMap Saatva 1024x969 1
The Saatva’s pressure map test results.

The DreamCloud also performed well on our pressure map test. Again, there is a lot of blue and green, meaning that this bed is good at relieving pressure around the lower back and shoulders. However, sleepers with hip pain might find the DreamCloud a little too firm, as shown by the yellow spots in that area.

Pain Relief

The results of the pressure relief test can indicate whether these mattresses aid in reducing pain in specific areas. I think the Saatva and DreamCloud are good options for most back sleepers. However, side sleepers, especially those with sensitive joints, should go with the Saatva or one of our best mattresses for side sleepers.

Durability

I would say the Saatva is more durable than the DreamCloud. While the DreamCloud may be more firm, the Saatva has two layers of pocketed coils, which add to its durability.

However, the DreamCloud is still a good choice for shoppers who need something for the long haul. It also has a layer of individually wrapped coils, which should prevent the mattress from sagging prematurely.

Saatva Customer Service Rating

  • Good: I gave Saatva this rating because I had to wait 25 minutes to be paired with a live agent using their website’s live chat function. The agent answered my question, but the waiting took longer than I would have liked. I also considered the bed’s warranty and trial period in my rating. Saatva’s 365-night trial and lifetime warranty (as high as you’ll find in the sleep industry) help them quite a bit here.

DreamCloud Customer Service Rating

  • Good: I gave DreamCloud this rating because when I asked a question in their chat function, they sent a link instead of pairing me with a rep to chat with. Although I got the answer to my question, I would have preferred to speak to someone directly. Again, I considered the bed’s warranty and trial period in my rating. DreamCloud also has a 365-night trial and lifetime warranty, which gave them a little boost here.

Our Review Process

Our Sleepopolis reviewers personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress.
