Mattress brand Douglas calls its new Summit bed the “highest peak in the Douglas mattress range.” The company says that out of its three different Douglas mattress models, the Summit is the most cooling, pressure relieving, and motion isolating. Here at Sleepopolis, we’ve reviewed the other two Douglas beds, so I’m excited to complete the trio with this Douglas Summit mattress review.
I’m going to put it through a variety of tests, like checking its firmness, pressure relief, motion isolation, and more. I’ll also compare it to its competitors and Douglas siblings to help you decide if it’s the best new bed for you.

Is the Douglas Summit a Good Mattress for You?
To start off, we put each of our mattresses through something called a “Rest Test,” where we lie down on the bed for an uninterrupted 15-minute power nap. This gives us a big-picture assessment of how it performs before we get into some of our more specific tests. Here’s how my colleague Amelia felt napping on the Douglas Summit mattress:
“The Douglas Summit offers a balanced feel. It is firm, but also allows for some contouring and pressure relief. I found this bed particularly comfortable for back sleeping and fairly comfortable on my side. It definitely has a slow-sinking feeling — you won’t feel immediate pressure relief but over time you sink in more to the bed.”
Along with the Rest Test, I want to offer some quick recommendations for the Summit before we fully dive into this review since different factors, such as your body type and sleeping position, will determine whether or not a mattress will work for you.
Who I recommend the Douglas Summit mattress for
- I think couples could really like this mattress and benefit from its solid motion isolation and edge support.
- Back and side sleepers should experience an ideal combination of pressure relief and support on the Summit.
- Hot sleepers should appreciate the cooling features in this mattress, including a cool-to-the-touch cover and cooling gel foam.
Who I don’t recommend the Douglas Summit mattress for
- I think most strict stomach sleepers will want a bed with less sinkage, so their hips can stay lifted up and in line with their spine. Check out our roundup of best mattresses for stomach sleepers for better options.
- Folks after a bouncy, innerspring feel should check out a mattress with coils — like the ones highlighted in our roundup of best hybrid mattresses.
- If you’re not in Canada, you’re unable to order this Canadian mattress. What a bummer, eh? Instead, I’d suggest checking out our roundup of the best mattresses of the year.
How Firm is the Douglas Summit mattress?
A mattress’s firmness level can be a big sign of whether or not it’ll work for you and your sleep preferences. Since mattress firmness can be personal and subjective, I like to include my coworkers’ opinions in my final firmness rating.
I ultimately decided to rate the Douglas Summit as a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. We rate 6.5 as the standard for medium-firm, so this means the Douglas Summit is a touch firmer than average. I found it to have a cushiony feel that allows you to sink in a little bit while still keeping you supported. It feels softer the longer you lay on it, but I think it still stays in the medium-firm ballpark.

Douglas Summit Mattress Performance
Let’s cover some performance factors, like support in different sleeping positions, pain relief, and performance for couples.
Testing the Douglas Summit Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions
Take a look at how the Douglas Summit does for different weight classes in different sleeping positions below.
Is the Douglas Summit a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 59 kilograms / 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – This bed will feel a little firm to these sleepers, but I think it should still be comfortable and offer slight contouring around the lumbar region.
- Light Side Sleepers – I think this bed may feel a little too firm to some of these sleepers since they may not sink through the top layers enough to experience needed pressure relief.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – I think the Summit will work for these sleepers and keep them propped up and supported for healthy sleep posture.
Is the Douglas Summit a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (59 – 113 kilograms / 130 – 250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Summit is a great fit for these sleepers. It will offer gentle cushioning around the hip area while still keeping them lifted.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – Despite having a slightly firmer feel at first, the Summit should feel great for a lot of these sleepers since the foams conform around the hip and shoulder, providing nice relief.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – I think these sleepers’ hips will slowly sink in too far over time, which could cause pain in the future. I’d check out our roundup of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers instead.
Is the Douglas Summit a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 113 kilograms / 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back, Side, and Stomach Sleepers – The Douglas Summit is likely going to feel really soft to these sleepers, and is probably not going to be supportive enough for their needs. Side sleepers weighing less than 136 kilograms (300 pounds) should feel comfy on this bed, but we’d suggest other heavy sleepers check out our roundup of the best mattresses for heavy people to see more supportive mattresses and ones specifically designed for heavier body weights.
Douglas Summit Pain Relief Performance
If you suffer from aches or pains, you’re going to want to find a bed that does a good job with pressure relief, so it can alleviate tension at pressure points found at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. Depending on your preferred sleeping position, you’ll also want pressure relief for different parts of your body in order to prevent pain.
In order to test out a bed’s pressure-relieving abilities, we like to use a pressure map. The pressure map consists of putting a mat on the bed and lying on it. The mat uses heat mapping technology to show where pressure’s building across my body as I move between positions. Blue and green indicate areas of low pressure, while orange and red indicate areas of high pressure.
Back Pain – These results show me the Douglas Summit does a good job relieving pressure for back and side sleepers with back pain. The cushy foams on top should offer their pressure points cuddly relief, while the high-density foams below keep them supporting. I think stomach sleepers with back pain will want to choose a bed with less sinkage to ensure their spine stays in alignment.
Shoulder Pain – Results are also great for back and side sleepers with shoulder pain. I think the foams contour nicely around the shoulder area to offer a good amount of relief and sinkage. Although stomach sleepers with shoulder pain could find relief in this area on the Summit, I’d still recommend they go for a bed with less sinkage for better comfort overall.
Hip Pain – Again, these results are good news for side and back sleepers with hip pain. The map shows very low pressure, which is great for these sleepers in need of relief. I think most stomach sleepers with hip pain should look for a firm mattress with less sinkage to keep their hips lifted up.
Douglas Summit Mattress Performance for Couples
If you share the bed with a partner, you’ll want to consider a few extra components than those who sleep alone, including motion transfer, sex, edge, support, and cooling.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is how movement carries across the mattress. Couples tend to prefer a bed with low motion transfer so they’re not disturbed by each other’s movements throughout the night. If a bed absorbs movement well and stops it in its tracks, it has strong motion isolation.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10-pound steel ball on the Douglas Summit from heights of four inches, eight inches, and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
These are great motion transfer results. You can see the bed quickly absorbs movement in the measurements. I don’t think you’ll be disturbed by a restless partner on this all-foam bed.
Sex
The best mattress for sex will be responsive and easy to move around on. I didn’t find the Summit to be very bouncy, but it was still pretty easy to move around on. Overall, I think it’d be an okay mattress for sex.
Cooling
Two people typically overheat faster than a solo sleeper, so it can be beneficial for couples to think about how well a mattress keeps you cool. The Summit is equipped with some great cooling materials and sleeps cool.
Edge Support
Edge support is a measure of how well the perimeter of a mattress supports weight, so you can sit or sleep near the edge of the bed. Strong edge support can make a bed feel larger since you’re able to sprawl out and use the full surface.
I tested the Douglas Summit’s edge support by sitting, lying, and moving around on the side of the bed. While sitting on the edge, it sank down a little bit, but I didn’t feel like I was about to fall off. While lying down and moving around on the side of the mattress, it did a really good job and kept me supported. I think it has good edge support (especially for being an all-foam mattress).
What is the Douglas Summit Mattress Made Of?
The Douglas Summit is a 12-inch all-foam mattress with some stellar cooling materials. Let’s go over each layer of the bed below.
Cover – The Douglas Summit’s top layer is a Douglas CoolSense Cover with CryoFusion Cooling Nanofibres infused in the top. This cover has a slick, cool-to-the-touch feel. The cover’s also removable and machine washable.
Comfort Layer – The comfort layer is two and a half inches of Douglas’ trademarked ecoLight Cooling Gel Foam with Polar Temperature Balancing. Douglas says this layer provides pressure relief and also helps regulate your body temperature throughout the seasons with Phase Change Materials.
Transition Layer – Next is a 2.5-inch layer of Premium Elastex Foam. Douglas says this layer gives sleepers both bounce and cushioning.
Support Layer – The final support layer is seven inches of Douglas’ Motion Isolation Support Foam. This is high-density foam that stabilizes the bed and provides support.
Douglas Summit Mattress Unboxing and Off-Gassing
The Douglas Summit is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which means it will arrive at your door compressed in a box. You’ll need to unbox it at home, and we recommend having another person help you.
Like most bed-in-a-box mattresses, you’ll need to wait at least 24 hours for this bed to fully decompress. It will need to off-gas for a few hours to release any packing smells, but after that, the smell should dissipate.

My Final Thoughts About the Douglas Summit Mattress
Before we say our goodbyes, I want to summarize my favorite (and not-so-favorite) things about the Douglas Summit mattress.
My favorite things about the Douglas Summit mattress
This bed sleeps very cool for an all-foam mattress and is literally cool to the touch, so I think it’s a great fit for hot sleepers. Despite having a slightly firmer feel at first, I think it offers great cushioning and pressure relief to back and side sleepers. It feels softer the longer you lay on it, but still keeps you supported. Combination sleepers and couples should also find a lot to love with the Summit.
My complaints about the Douglas Summit mattress
I think strict stomach sleepers over 130 pounds won’t get the support or spinal alignment they need from this mattress. I also think heavyweight sleepers, aside from some heavyweight side sleepers, will want a more supportive option. This bed doesn’t offer much bounce, so I’d suggest anyone after a bouncy feel check out an innerspring mattress or latex mattress instead. Lastly, this bed is exclusively for folks in Canada, so we know that can be a disappointment for sleepers in other areas. If you want a similar vibe available in the U.S., we recommend checking out the Nectar Premier Copper mattress.

Douglas Summit Mattress Policies and FAQs
What are Douglas’ shipping, trial period, and limited warranty policies?
The Douglas Summit ships for free throughout Canada with the exception of some remote areas. It comes with a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty.
How often should I rotate my Douglas Summit mattress?
Douglas recommends rotating your mattress every four to six months.
What if I want to return my Douglas Summit mattress?
Douglas’ return policy allows you to return your mattress for a full refund anytime between days 30 and 120 of your sleep trial. We recommend using a mattress protector during this time.
How long will it take for my Douglas Summit mattress to be delivered?
All Douglas mattresses are made to order. The brand says they do this so you can receive a “fresh new mattress,” rather than one that’s been sitting in a warehouse for months potentially deteriorating. After you make your mattress purchase and receive word it has shipped, it can take anywhere from one to six business days to arrive at your home (depending on which Canadian province you live in).
Do I need to use a box spring with the Douglas Summit?
Douglas recommends using a solid base or foundation, like a box foundation, platform bed frame, adjustable base, or slatted bed frame.
