Casper vs Tempurpedic Mattress Comparison

Well folks, this is going to be one mammoth of a comparison because I’m sizing up two of the most popular brands on the market: Casper and Tempur-Pedic. Not only do these bad boys have a ton of name recognition, but they also happen to make some pretty fantastic beds. But the question remains… which is better for you?

To find out, I did a little side-by-side comparison of the Original Casper and the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud, digging into their respective constructions, assessing their feels, and comparing their prices. Read on below or click here skip to my summary!

Casper vs Tempur-Pedic: Which is Better for You?

Across its comfort layers, the Casper uses a zoned support system, which essentially means that the foam has a different level of firmness throughout. It tends to be softer at the shoulders and firmer at the hips, allowing the mattress to provide a balanced feel—a tiny bit of sinkage at the shoulders and a lift at the hips. For more info on the Casper, be sure to check out my full Casper mattress review

The Tempur-Cloud is one of Tempur-Pedic’s luxury beds. With layers of plush memory foam and high-density poly foam, the mattress was specifically designed for deep pressure relief. You can read the full Tempur-Cloud mattress review on our site as well.

Keep in mind that different mattresses will appeal to different people. A lot of it comes down to factors such as personal preference, body type, and sleeping position.

Who Should Buy Casper

  • Back sleepers and combination sleepers. The zoned support of the Casper works to put pressure relief on the shoulders while also filling in the lumbar region. It’s an especially good option for those who deal with back pain and shoulder pain.
  • Anyone who prefers a balanced foam feel. While the Tempur-Pedic provides more sinkage and contouring, the Casper is closer to an on-top-of-the-bed feel.
  • People with a strict budget. The Casper is significantly less expensive than the Tempur-Pedic.

Who Should Buy Tempur-Cloud

  • Back sleepers and side sleepers should both be comfortable on this bed, thanks to the proprietary TEMPUR materials found across all of the layers.
  • Those who prefer a soft, plush mattress. Sleeping on the Tempur-Pedic is closer to the classic memory-foam experience of contouring—as if you’re falling into a giant hug.
  • Couples. While the Casper could also be a good option here, the Tempur-Pedic has better motion transfer results.

Casper vs Tempur-Cloud: Similarities and Differences

Overall, these mattresses are more different than they are similar. Let’s see where they differ and where they might overlap.

Main Similarities

  • Both beds have an all-foam construction, although the materials themselves are very different.
  • The Casper and Tempur-Cloud are both great options for back sleepers.
  • Neither mattress is the best option for stomach sleepers. If that’s you, I’d recommend checking out one of our best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Main Differences

  • The Tempur-Cloud is likely going to be the better option for side sleepers.
  • The Casper has a balanced foam feel while the Tempur-Cloud has more of a classic memory-foam feel.
  • The Tempur-Cloud is a luxury mattress that feels softer than the Casper.
  • The Casper tends to sleep cooler than the Tempur-Pedic.
  • The Tempur-Cloud has a much higher price tag than the Casper.

Casper and Tempur-Cloud Mattress Feel Comparison

When deciding what the best mattress is for you, one of the most crucial factors is always going to be feel. So let’s take a moment to cover areas such as firmness, pressure relief, motion isolation, and other performance factors between these two beds.

Casper

When testing out the Casper’s firmness level, it scored a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale, which makes it just a touch firmer than medium-firm. You might feel some softness, sinkage, and pressure relief at the shoulders, but you’ll also feel yourself lifted at the hips, which is why the Casper is so popular with back sleepers.

The Casper has decent edge support and is fairly good at isolating motion, so while you might feel your partner moving around, it’s unlikely to seriously disrupt you. Regarding temperature, hot sleepers can take solace in the fact that the Casper manages to sleep cool. The low temperature comes from its layer of aerated foam—a light material designed to promote airflow.

Tempur-Cloud

The Tempur-Cloud scored a 6 out of 10, meaning that it’s going to be softer than the Casper. There isn’t a lot of bounce to this bed, so you’ll likely sink into the memory foam layers for a soft and pressure-relieving tone. It scored very well on motion transfer so the bed should be a good match for couples, as they’re unlikely to feel their partner tossing and turning at night. However, the Tempur-Cloud scored slightly lower than the Casper on edge support, so you may not feel quite as supported while sleeping near the edge of the bed. The bed also doesn’t sleep as cool as the Casper, likely because, outside of the cover, it doesn’t have any extra cooling technologies implemented into the design.

Comparing What it’s Like to Sleep on the Casper and the Tempur-Cloud

How a mattress feels is largely going to depend on what sleeping position you’re in. That’s why we always take a moment to break down how every bed might resonate with different sleepers.

Casper

Back — The Casper Original mattress tends to be most popular with back sleepers. The top layer of aerated foam offers a lot of pressure relief on the shoulders while filling in the lumbar region. Anyone with back or shoulder pain will definitely want to look into this bed, as it works to promote a healthy spinal alignment.

Side — After a while, the Casper tends to feel a little uncomfortable on the side, so while combination sleepers who switch positions will probably be alright, strict side sleepers may want a softer bed

Stomach — On the flip-side, stomach sleepers may require a firmer mattress that lifts the hips in complete neutral alignment with the shoulders.

Body Weight — Lighter sleepers (those under 130 lbs.) are likely to find the Casper slightly firmer than an average sleeper would, as they won’t sink as deeply into its comfort layer. Conversely, heavier people over 250 lbs. will likely find themselves sinking too far into this bed. I’d suggest heavy people opt for a more supportive bed.

Casper Back Sleeping
The Casper’s balanced feel might appeal to combination sleepers.

Tempur-Cloud

Back — When sleeping on the Tempur-Cloud, you’ll sink slowly and softly into that top layer of memory foam, then feel the foam filling in the lumbar region. This could be a wonderful option for back sleepers who need relief on their pressure points.

Side — The Tempur-Cloud feels equally good on the side, contouring the shoulders and hips and providing them with cushiony support.

Stomach — Stomach-sleeping wasn’t quite as comfortable on the Tempur-Cloud, which is no surprise given that stomach sleepers usually require a firmer bed with more support. Here, there was some uncomfortable bowing at the lower back.

Body Weight — The Tempur-Cloud is going to feel similar for light sleepers and average weight sleepers, thanks to its cushy memory foam layer. It will feel a bit softer to heavy sleepers, but I do think this mattress has the level of support heavy people need.

Tempur-Cloud Side Sleeping
I like the TEMPUR-Cloud for side sleepers.

Comparing Casper and Tempur-Cloud Mattress Materials

How a mattress feels is ultimately going to trace back to its construction. With that in mind, it’s time to get detailed. Let’s pull back the covers to see what each of these beds is made of.

Casper

  • Cover — The Casper’s mattress cover isn’t anything too flashy; a knit polyester blend with a soft and stretchy feel to it.
  • Comfort Layer — We’ve talked a lot about the bed’s aerated foam, and this will be the first layer you experience when lying down on the Casper. You’ll sink in slightly while the small aerations in the foam work to promote cooling and breathability.
  • Transition Layer — Next, the Casper offers a second layer of zoned support. This section has been divided up into three separate zones, all with different levels of firmness. There’s softer foam at the shoulders for pressure relief and firmer foam at the hips for a slight lift. It helps the bed feel balanced and the spine stay in a neutral alignment.
  • Base Layer — Lastly, there’s a thick section of high-density poly foam. This final support layer provides shape and stability to the overall structure.
Casper Materials
A look inside the Casper.

Tempur-Pedic

  • Cover — On the Tempur-Pedic, the cover is made from a special 360° stretch fabric that moves with the sleeper. The material is also moisture-wicking, which works to keep the temperature low.
  • Comfort Layer — Underneath the cover is a layer of TEMPUR material—a proprietary substance that’s similar to memory foam. It has a slow responsiveness to pressure, making for a lot of deep sinkage and body-contouring at the hips, shoulders, and lower back.
  • Transition Layer — The next layer is also made of TEMPUR material, but is a bit firmer than the layer above. This is to help ease the sleeper into the final support layer below.
  • Base Layer — Finally, we have a thick foundational layer of high-density poly foam. This section of the bed responds more quickly to pressure, balancing out the deep sinkage happening above and adding further stability and shape to the overall structure.
Tempur-Cloud Materials
A look inside the TEMPUR-Cloud.

Casper vs Tempur-Pedic: Best Qualities

To sum it all up, the Casper is a Medium Firm bed with a balanced feel that should appeal greatly to back sleepers. The Tempur-Cloud is a softer, cushier, luxury mattress that should be a good fit for back sleepers and side sleepers alike. Let’s take just a second to revisit some of their best qualities.

Casper Best Features

  • The zoned support system. Its dynamic nature shows that the creators really were keeping folks with back and shoulder pain in mind when building the bed.
  • Its low temperature. I personally use a Casper and can attest that the bed sleeps incredibly cool.
  • The price. Because it’s so comfortable and much less expensive than the Temper-Cloud, the Casper feels like a great value.

  • As the name suggests, the Casper Hybrid is the hybrid version of the original Casper bed, so utilizes the same foams as it does.

When he’s not hopping on a new bed or working with our editorial team to whip up an engaging sleep education guide, you can find him reading books on world history, walking his dog Pepper, or searching for the best cheeseburger in New York City.
