Now that you know the main similarities and differences, let’s jump into how the DreamCloud and Helix Midnight actually feel. To do this, I’ll test these mattresses for different feel factors, such as firmness, pressure relief, bounce, and sinkage.
What’s the Firmness Difference?
A mattress’s firmness is inherently subjective and can feel very different depending on the sleeper’s body type and preferred sleeping position. For example, heavier sleepers are more likely to sink further into a mattress’s layers and may experience mattresses as softer than an average weight sleeper would (more on body type and feel later). Because of this disparity, I always test each mattress with a handful of colleagues, all of whom are Certified Sleep Science Coaches. We each score the mattress from 1 to 10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. A score of 6.5 out of 10 marks a true medium-firm mattress. I then average our scores to create our overall firmness rating.
My fellow testers and I all agreed that the DreamCloud leans firm but still provides a decent amount of sinkage from the top foam layers. We gave the DreamCloud an average of 7 out of 10, making it a medium-firm mattress that leans slightly firm. The layer of individually wrapped coils gives the sleeper some nice lift and prevents too much sinkage from occurring
When laying on the Helix Midnight, it felt like a classic medium-firm mattress. The other testers confirmed my opinion, and we gave it a score of 6.5 out of 10. This makes it a true medium-firm mattress, which is a great choice for a variety of sleeping positions and body types. The top layers of memory foam were quite soft, yet they were balanced by the supportive coils below.
What Does Each Mattress Feel Like?
Now that you know where these mattresses fall on our firmness scale, let’s discuss how it feels to sleep on them.
The DreamCloud’s firm feel is largely due to its layer of pocketed coils. When laying on the mattress, I could feel the coil system working below to lift my body up and out of the bed. Although the top layers of foam provide a bit of sinkage, I didn’t find a ton of body contouring on this mattress, and I definitely felt more “on” the bed than “in” the bed. Overall, I felt the DreamCloud was comfortable while placing my spine in proper alignment; I could see sleepers with back pain finding a lot of relief on this bed. I also enjoyed the mattress’s bouncy nature and think combination sleepers will be able to easily switch between sleeping positions without feeling stuck in the foam layers.
Medium-firm mattresses typically provide a balance between sinkage and support, and the Helix Midnight certainly met that expectation. When I laid down on the mattress, I immediately sunk into the top layers of memory foam. The memory foam has a low response to pressure, which allows for some deep sinkage and body contouring. No matter what sleeping position I tried, I could feel great pressure relief at my hips, shoulders, and back. However, the layer of coils below ensured my body was still lifted and supported, and I felt really stable and secure. These coils provide a bit of bounce, making it easy to toss and turn.
How Does The Construction Differ?

DreamCloud vs Helix Comparing Mattress Performance
Here at Sleepopolis, our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches put every mattress we review through a series of tests. These tests help give us an objective view of who these mattresses could be good for, as well as what it’s like to sleep on them every night. Below, I’ll discuss how the DreamCloud and Helix performed on tests like cooling, motion transfer, edge support, and more.
Temperature
When I assess cooling, I first examine the mattress’s materials and construction. Memory foam is notorious for trapping heat, but the DreamCloud has a cooling gel-infused foam comfort layer that exceeded my expectations. The layer of pocked coils put in most of the work when it comes to cooling this mattress down. The inclusion of coils adds space within the mattress, allowing for plenty of airflow and breathability. When resting on this bed, it felt cool and breathable, and I could see it being a great choice for hot sleepers prone to overheating.
When you purchase the Helix Midnight, you can choose to add a GlacioTex cooling cover for an additional cost. This cover can help keep this bed cool to the touch. Even without the cooling cover, I thought the Helix Midnight had excellent cooling abilities. Like the DreamCloud, this mattress contains a layer of coils that allow air to flow through the mattress instead of getting trapped.
Motion Isolation
If you share your bed with someone else, the last thing you want is to feel them tossing and turning all night. If your partner moves around at night, or you sleep with a pet that jumps on and off the bed, you may want to consider a mattress with low motion transfer. These mattresses are able to isolate motion to one side of the bed and prevent the sleeper on the other side from feeling it. We test motion isolation using a human test, a wine test, and a seismometer test.
The human test is simple – I lay down on the mattress and have a colleague toss and turn on the other side. If I can’t feel their motion, it indicates excellent motion isolation. When performing this test on the DreamCloud, I could barely feel their motion, which gave me high hopes for this mattress. However, I was disappointed when we moved on to the seismometer test. This test involves dropping a 10-pound steel ball onto the mattress from three different heights and measuring the disturbance using a seismometer. When looking at the seismometer graph, we can see a substantial amount of spiking, indicating poor motion isolation. While I don’t see normal tossing and turning causing sleep disturbance, I think you’re likely to be woken up by larger movements, such as getting in and out of bed.
Like the DreamCloud, the Helix contains bouncy coils, which makes it harder to hide motion. When I performed the human test on the Helix Midnight, I could feel my coworker getting in and out of the bed and moving around. We also performed a wine test on this mattress, which involves placing a full wine glass onto the mattress and then tossing and turning on the other side. We observe the liquid in the glass and see how much it sloshes around (or spills). We could see the liquid sloshing around a fair amount, but the glass didn’t seem like it was going to tip over. Finally, we performed the seismometer test and discovered quite a bit of spiking on the graph, indicating poor motion isolation. If you’re a sound sleeper, you may not experience sleep disturbance on this mattress, but light sleepers may want a bed with lower motion transfer.
Edge Support
Edge support is simple – it refers to how supportive the edges of the mattress are. Ideally, your mattress will be just as strong and supportive along the perimeter as it is in the center. This is an important factor to consider if you like to spread out and use the entire surface of the mattress, or if you sleep with a partner, as strong edge support can make a mattress feel larger. Edge support can also indicate durability and whether the mattress is likely to sag over time.
I thought the DreamCloud had excellent edge support. The individually wrapped coils put in the work to keep the entire bed strong and sturdy. When sitting and laying near the edges, I didn’t notice sagging and felt very stable. I didn’t feel like I was at risk of slipping off the mattress, which is always nice to see.
Like the DreamCloud, the Helix Midnight had strong edge support. This mattress has reinforced edges that make sitting and laying on the edge very comfortable. I felt supported and stable, and there was no concern about falling off the bed. I don’t see this mattress prematurely sagging and was overall very impressed with how supportive the perimeter was.
Pressure Relief
We test pressure relief by rolling a specialized mat onto the surface of the mattress and laying on it in different sleeping positions. The mat is able to sense pressure and translate the results into an easy-to-read graphic using thermal imaging. Areas displaying blue and green indicate minimal pressure buildup and areas with yellow and red indicate higher pressure buildup.
I felt a ton of pressure relief in my lumbar region when lying on the DreamCloud. I could feel the top layers of foam filling in the space at my lower back, which helped ease tension. This feeling is reflected in the pressure map results above. My only concern is the yellow forming at the hips, which indicates that pressure is starting to build there. This mattress may be a bit too firm to relieve pressure at the hips when side sleeping, especially if you already struggle with hip pain.
I thought the Helix Midnight did an amazing job at relieving pressure. Looking at the pressure map, we can see mostly blue and green. I appreciated how well the mattress cushioned my sensitive joints. If you look closely at the map, we can see a bit of yellow at the lower back, which means some folk may experience some pressure buildup there. However, I don’t find this bit of yellow too concerning since it’s surrounded by blue and green.
Pain Relief
How well a mattress can relieve pressure can indicate how well it can relieve pain. If pressure builds in an area, you’re likely to experience pain there over time. Likewise, you’re unlikely to develop new aches and pains if your mattress is good at relieving pressure. People with preexisting pain can also find relief if their mattress cradles their joints and prevents pressure from building.
I think the DreamCloud could be a great choice for people with preexisting lower back pain. They should find a lot of comfort from the top foam layers, which help cushion the back and relieve tension. Based on the blue and green on the map, I think some sleepers can find some shoulder pain relief. However, I wouldn’t recommend the DreamCloud to people with hip pain or sensitive hip joints – I could feel some pressure building at the hips.
The Helix Midnight is a great choice for sleepers with joint pain. When laying on the mattress, I found relief in the back, hips, and shoulders. The soft foam in this bed helps gently cradle these sensitive areas, and I think folks with preexisting pain could benefit from this mattress. Even if you don’t already experience joint pain, I think this mattress can prevent new pain from developing. As I mentioned earlier, there is a bit of pressure building at the lower back, but this shouldn’t be an issue for most sleepers.
Durability
The quality and construction of a mattress’s materials can help indicate how durable the mattress is. As I mentioned earlier, edge support can also indicate whether the mattress is prone to sagging over time. We can also take a look at the mattress warranty, as this can tell us how confident the brand is in the longevity of its product.
I think the DreamCloud is a very durable mattress. It’s made with high-quality materials and contains a tall section of individually wrapped coils that keep this mattress standing strong. The fantastic edge support tells me this mattress won’t sag quickly. To top it off, the DreamCloud comes with a lifetime warranty, indicating it will last many years.
The Helix Midnight is definitely a durable mattress. Helix mattresses are made with high-quality materials, and the coils inside help keep the mattress supportive and strong. This mattress has great edge support, and I don’t think it’s prone to premature sagging. The Helix Midnight comes with a 10-year warranty. Although this isn’t a lifetime guarantee, it’s still solid.
