Main Similarities
- Though the GhostBed mattress is made entirely of foam and the Helix Midnight is a hybrid model, they both offer nice support to back sleepers, albeit in distinct ways. If you struggle with back pain, I’d consider both of these to be good options for you.
- Both of these mattresses also happen to be fairly affordable. If you’re shopping on a budget, I think you’d be well-pleased with either of these options.

Now that we’ve got the basics out of the way, let’s get into how these mattresses feel. We’re going to do that by assessing a wide range of different feel factors, including firmness, support, pressure relief, and more.
But before we get started, I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the fact that feel is always going to be a subjective measure and one that could change depending on your body size, shape, and weight. How I feel the bed isn’t necessarily how you will feel the bed.
Helix
After rolling around on the Helix Midnight mattress, I decided to give it a 6 out of 10 firmness rating on the firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it seems as though this bed is just shy of medium firm.
As we discussed above, the Helix Midnight is a hybrid mattress, which means it combines foam top layers with an interior section of pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support (unlike an innerspring mattress, which is built almost exclusively with coils). And that’s exactly what I felt as I settled onto the Midnight. While most hybrid mattresses on the market are pretty firm, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the Midnight is actually quite gentle. This is due to both the soft knit cover and the thick top layer of memory foam, which allows you to sink in for a touch of pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
However, before you sink too far into the memory foam, the pocketed coil system activates to lift you up and out of the structure. If you’re someone who wants to feel more “on top” of your bed than “in” it, I think the Helix Midnight could be a fantastic option for you. Though many types of sleepers may benefit from the buoyant nature of this mattress, I think combination sleepers (or folks who switch between positions in the night) could be especially well-suited to its lively design. Back sleepers may also enjoy the firm yet gentle support they get from the bed’s hybrid construction.
It’s worth noting that the Helix Midnight is one of six standard hybrid mattresses sold by Helix and is designated as the brand’s “Medium Feel” option. It also happens to be the most popular mattress sold by Helix. If you find that the Midnight is either too firm or too soft for your needs, you could always explore the brand’s other firmness options, from the ultra-gentle Helix Sunset to the sturdy and supportive Helix Dawn, which has an almost innerspring feel to it. We’ll explore some of these other firmness options later on in this review.
GhostBed
Interestingly enough, the GhostBed scored a 7 out of 10 firmness rating on the firmness scale from me. Again, when compared to the industry standard of 6.5, it seems like this bed is on the firmer side.
If I was surprised to find that the Helix Midnight was actually pretty gentle, I was just as surprised to discover that the GhostBed is actually pretty firm. This might go against the hybrid vs all-foam discussion we’ve been having thus far, but I think the secret lies in how different bodies react to memory foam mattresses. Because the material slowly contours to your body overtime, lighter sleepers tend to experience it as a little bit firmer than heavier sleepers do. Regardless, it’s important to allow a few minutes for your body to adjust to the material before you truly decide whether or not its feel is going to be right for you. I’d also highlight the fact that the memory foam here is placed under a bouncier layer of latex foam, which curbs some of its sinkage and body-contouring,
After I fully adjusted to the GhostBed mattress, I felt a really nice balance of pressure relief and support. The foam layers contoured to my shoulders, hips, and lower back, alleviating tension all across my body. Of all the positions I slept in, sleeping on my back was probably the most comfortable. I could feel the memory foam layer filling in the space at my lumbar region while the top layer of latex worked to lift my hips in alignment with my shoulders. This helped to establish a neutral spinal alignment, which brought some pleasant comfort to my joints.
I’d also note that though the GhostBed certainly isn’t as bouncy as the Helix Midnight mattress, it does feature some nice mobility. This allows folks to move around and change positions without feeling too “stuck” in the mattress. If you like the idea of an all-foam bed, but are worried about being swallowed up by the materials, the GhostBed could be a solid option for you.
Comparing What it’s Like to Sleep on the Helix and the GhostBed
Below, we’re going to break down what it feels like to sleep on the Helix Midnight and GhostBed Classic mattresses. To do this, we’ll assess how they feel in different sleeping positions. We’ll also chat about how folks of various sizes and body weights might experience a new mattress differently.
Helix
Back — I thought the Helix Midnight felt amazing on my back. The top layer of memory foam filled in the space at my lumbar region for some nice pressure relief while the pocketed coils lifted my hips in alignment with my shoulders. I would definitely recommend this bed for back sleepers or anyone that struggles with back pain.
Side — This bed was fairly comfortable on my side, but I think it might be a touch too firm for strict side sleepers. If you’re someone who switches between your back and your side, I think this could be a great choice, but if you sleep solely on your side, I’m not sure this mattress will give you the deep pressure relief at the pressure points that you need.
Stomach — If the Helix Midnight is too firm for strict side sleepers, it might also be too soft for strict stomach sleepers. These folks need an ultra-firm bed that positions the hips squarely on top of the structure to achieve a neutral line from crown to foot. Unfortunately, the foam here is too soft to support this taut alignment.
Body Weight — If you weigh under 130 lbs., you’re likely to experience this mattress as a touch firmer than other sleepers. If you weigh over 250 lbs., you’re likely to experience this mattress as softer than the average sleeper, though you should still get some nice support from the pocketed coil system.
GhostBed
Back — Back sleepers should find a lot to love on the GhostBed mattress. When I stretched out on my back, I found that the combination of latex and memory foam did a nice job of relieving pressure at my joints while lifting my hips in alignment with my shoulders.
Side — I think this mattress might be too firm for strict side sleepers. When I rolled onto my side, I could feel my shoulder jamming up, which tells me that there isn’t quite enough contouring here to alleviate pain at the shoulders, hips, and other pressure points. As with the Helix Midnight, I think combination sleepers who switch between their side and another position should be fine, but wouldn’t recommend it for those who doze primarily on their sides.
Stomach — The GhostBed is just too soft for stomach sleepers. As I turned onto my stomach, I could feel my hips sinking out of alignment with my shoulders, which created some uncomfortable bowing at my lower back. Strict stomach sleepers will want a firmer structure that lifts the hips in line with the shoulders.
Body Weight — As we discussed above, different people will experience memory foam slightly differently. If you weigh under 130 lbs., you’ll likely find the bed to be quite firm. However, if you weigh over 250 lbs., you’ll likely sink right through the top foam layers and into the high-density poly foam base, marking this bed as a less than ideal option for heavy people.

So, we’ve gotten a pretty good sense of how these mattresses feel, but how exactly are they built? For that, we’re going to dive underneath the covers and dissect these mattress’s layers one by one. By analyzing their designs, we’ll be better equipped to understand why the Helix and GhostBed mattresses feel the way they do.
Helix
Cover — Things kick off with a Soft Touch Design cover that is, well, soft to the touch. The fabric here is super cozy and crafted to promote airflow throughout the mattress.
Comfort Layer — Beneath the cover, you’ll land on a layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which allows it to contour to the curves of the body for gentle pressure relief. As you sink into this layer, you should feel some nice comfort at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. A top layer of memory foam can be especially suitable for folks who suffer from joint pain or arthritis.
Transition Layer — Up next, you’ll arrive at a middle section of poly foam. This material has a quicker response to pressure than the memory foam above it and functions mostly to transition the sleeper into the firmer base below.
Base Layer — The bulk of the mattress is made up of this system of pocketed coils. Hundreds of individually wrapped coils come together to produce a sturdy, bouncy, and supportive vibe. I’d also note that because the coils are individually wrapped, they’re able to isolate motion super well. This could be a big plus for couples. Latex is a naturally cooling material that has a quick response to pressure, so works to lift the sleeper up and out of the structure. The small aerations along the surface of this layer promote a ton of breathability throughout the mattress, working to lower temps through the night. If you’re a hot sleeper, the GhostBed could be a great fit for you.
Transition Layer — Beneath the comfort layer of latex, you’ll arrive at a thick section of gel memory foam. As we saw in the Helix Midnight, this material has a slow response to pressure, which provides plenty of space for sleepers to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. But what sets this memory foam apart from the one we saw in the Helix mattress is that this layer has been infused with gel. This helps to mitigate memory foam’s tendency to trap and absorb body heat and cool down the structure. I’d also note that by placing this layer of memory foam underneath one of latex, GhostBed has prevented the mattress from being too soft and unsupportive.

I think this vibe could work wonders for back sleepers after a softer vibe.

- The Helix Luxe line basically takes the six mattresses in the Standard Helix line and amps them up with extra layers of foam for even more pressure relief and support. So, the Helix Midnight Luxe is just like the Helix Midnight, except with a little more oomph.
- If you’re after a luxurious feel from your mattress, the Helix Luxe line could be the one for you. I think it could also be especially good for couples, as these mattresses isolate motion better than their Standard Helix counterparts.
- The Helix Luxe mattresses also sleep cooler than the Standard Helix mattresses, which could be a nice bonus for hot sleepers.
- Unsurprisingly, the Luxe models are much more expensive than the Standard ones, so may not be the best fit for those shopping on a budget.
