Brand Snapshot

Naturepedic launched in 2003 on a mission to improve the way folks sleep with organic products. Since then, the eco-friendly brand has developed a robust line of all-natural mattresses and bedding for both children and adults, marking it as a popular go-to destination for environmentally conscious consumers.

While we won’t be getting into all these products today, we will be assessing every inch of the Naturepedic Chorus mattress, starting with its construction!

The Naturepedic Chorus Mattress

What is the Naturepedic Chorus Mattress Made Of?

Built with wool batting, all-natural cotton, a special plant-based PLA material, and sturdy pocketed coils, the Naturepedic Chorus mattress is a firm, organic option for eco-friendly sleepers looking to feel more “on top” of their bed than “in” it.

For more on this bed’s unique characteristics, let’s dive underneath the cover and examine its layers one by one.

Cover – Things kick off with a gentle cover quilted with wool, cotton, and PLA. While you might be familiar with the first two materials listed here, you may not know much about PLA. In short, it’s derived from non-GMO sugarcane and is known for its durability and moisture-wicking abilities. Therefore, when it’s combined with wool and cotton, it produces a soft feel that’s also naturally cooling.

Comfort – Directly beneath the quilted cover, you’ll land on a 1.5” tall section of micro-coils. This layer brings some immediate bounce and firmness to the bed, working to lift the sleeper up and out of the structure.

Batting – Up next, you’ll find a thin layer of organic cotton batting. This section functions mostly to give the microcoils above it something off of which to bounce. It also helps to gradually ease the sleeper into the firmer section of encased coils below.

Support – The bulk of the mattress is made up of this 8” tall section of encased coils. These springs bring a ton of bounce, firmness, and support to the structure, which could be an excellent vibe for back, combo, and stomach sleepers. I should also add that these coils are wrapped in a layer of foam edge support. This helps to maximize the usable surface area of the mattress, allowing sleepers to snooze comfortably all the way to the sides of the bed.

Base – And finally, we end on another layer of cotton batting. As we saw above, this section mostly functions to give the coils above it something off of which to respond.

How Does the Naturepedic Chorus Mattress Feel?

Now that we’ve got a pretty solid idea of what’s going on inside the Chorus mattress, let’s figure out how those materials make the bed feel. To start this discussion, I thought we’d kick things off with a look at this bed’s firmness.

As with any feel factor, firmness is a subjective measure and can change a lot depending on one’s body size, shape, and weight. Therefore, my interpretation of this bed’s firmness could be quite different from your own. For reference, I’m 5’10”, about 190 lbs., and prefer to sleep on my stomach.

Naturepedic Firmness
I found the Naturepedic Chorus to be pretty firm

After rolling around the Naturepedic Chorus, I decided to give it an 8/10 on the firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this bed is very, very firm.

The Chorus got an 8 from me because its feel is really dominated by the tall interior section of encased coils. This layer brings a ton of heft to the structure, working to position the sleeper squarely on top of the bed. I think this vibe could work particularly well for stomach sleepers as they generally prefer ultra-firm structures that lift the hips up and out of the mattress. Back sleepers may also find that the firmness is great for setting the spine in a neutral line from the shoulders to the lower back. Side sleepers, on the other hand, may find that the bed is just a touch too firm for their needs (but more on that below).

Testing the Naturepedic Chorus Mattress

Though important, firmness is far from the only feel factor to consider when buying a new bed. So, let’s test out this mattress for two other crucial attributes: Pressure Relief and Motion Transfer.

Pressure Relief

When we talk about pressure relief, we’re referring to a bed’s ability to alleviate tension at sensitive spots like the shoulders, hips, and lower back. To see how well (or not well!) the Chorus does this, we’re going to test it out with a pressure map.

This is a fantastic device that allows me to track the amount of force my body is exerting on the structure. I roll it out, hop aboard, and let the gadget do the rest! On the images below, green marks areas of low pressure and red indicates zones of high pressure.

Back – The Naturepedic Chorus felt very comfortable on my back! I experienced some nice comfort from the quilted cover at my lumbar region and noticed that my hips were lifted into excellent alignment with my shoulders. This established a nice, even line all across the body, resulting in a super cozy sleep.

Side – Unfortunately, this comfort didn’t exactly transfer to my side. Since there’s no traditional foam used in this mattress, there’s not really any room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. Therefore, strict side sleepers may want to look elsewhere.

Stomach – This mattress felt fantastic on my stomach! As I mentioned above, stomach sleepers tend to prefer ultra-firm structures that position the hips right on top of the bed, which the Chorus does with ease. If you’re a stomach sleeper interested in purchasing an organic mattress, I’d highly recommend that you give this one a look!

Motion Transfer

Another factor to consider when buying a new mattress is motion transfer. This measure will determine how much movement you’re likely to detect from one side of the bed to the other. If you sleep alone, this may not be a big deal, but if you share your bed with a partner, pet, or child, this will definitely be an important test for you.

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, Eight inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

These are very high motion transfer results, which tells me you’re likely to be disturbed by your partner’s movements in the night. When you consider how bouncy this mattress is, these results aren’t too surprising, but could be something for you to keep in mind on your search.

Should You Buy the Naturepedic Chorus Mattress?

Well folks, we’ve officially arrived at the end of this review, which means it’s time to answer the question you came here asking: Should you buy the Naturepedic Chorus mattress? While I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.

Naturepedic Chorus Mattress Pros

  • First and foremost, I love that this bed is built with all-natural materials. From the organic wool batting to the all-natural cotton batting used throughout, this mattress could be a great fit for eco-friendly sleepers.
  • I also think it could be an excellent option for strict stomach sleepers. This is one of the firmest beds I’ve ever tested, so is well-suited to the supportive needs of those who like to doze in prone.
  • Similarly, this firmness could work wonders for back sleepers in need of a little extra lift at the hips and lower back.

Naturepedic Chorus Mattress Cons

  • Unfortunately, side sleepers may find the Naturepedic Chorus mattress too firm for their needs. Typically, these folks prefer softer structures for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
  • Speaking of pressure relief, this mattress is not built with deep pressure relief in mind. So, if you’re someone in need of a gentle bed that’ll alleviate tension at sensitive spots like the shoulders and lower back, this may not be the bed for you.

Where are Naturepedic mattresses made?

All Naturepedic mattresses are made in the United States!

Do organic mattresses off-gas

While you may notice a “stale air” smell when you first unpackage an organic mattress, these beds don’t emit the same chemicals into the air that non-organic structures do.

Does the Naturepedic mattress need a box spring?

Nope! Naturepedic mattresses can be placed directly on a bed frame or the floor. However, if you want to add a little extra height to your bed, you can always place a Naturepedic mattress on a box spring.
