Nest Finch Mattress Overview
The Nest Finch is a latex mattress with a quilted cotton and cool cover. It comes in three firmness options (Plush, Medium, and Firm) and you can change the firmness level by swapping out the top layer. Nest offers a Lifetime Renewal Exchange program, which allows you to change your comfort layer to a different firmness or replace it to extend the life of your mattress. The latex construction gives this bed a bouncy and supportive feel, but also makes it sleep very cool.
The Nest Finch Natural Latex is a bed-in-a-box mattress, meaning it ships compressed in a box. I would recommend having a friend help you unbox it, as well as giving it a few days to fully expand.
Nest Finch Mattress Video Review
In this video review, I’ll go over some of the tests we used to score this mattress. Overall, the Nest Finch scored 4.4 out of 5.
Nest Finch Mattress Sleepopolis Score
You’ll likely notice the Nest Finch scored lower on edge support and motion isolation than in other categories. This means the perimeter of the bed isn’t very supportive, nor does the bed prevent motion from transferring across.
Both of these factors are important for couples, so if you are looking for an alternative option, I’d recommend looking at our best mattresses for couples. Or you could check out the Plank Firm Natural, a latex mattress which scored better in both these areas.
What Is the Nest Finch Mattress Made Of?
Knowing what materials are used to make a mattress can show a lot about how the bed will feel and perform. So let’s take a closer look at what’s inside the Nest Finch.
Cover – The Nest Finch’s cover is made with organic stretch knit cotton and Joma wool. It’s quilted with foam for added plushness. This cover unzips to reveal the comfort layer below (but it cannot be removed to clean).
Comfort Layer – The comfort layer on the Nest Finch is a 3-inch section of natural Talalay latex. This layer can either be Plush, Medium, or Firm, depending on the density of the latex layer. When you purchase a Finch, you can select your firmness option — but one cool feature is that you can unzip the cover to swap the layers out later. This allows you to alter the firmness of the mattress or simply extend the life of your mattress.
Support Layer – The primary support of the Nest Finch is another layer of latex. This is a 6-inch section of natural Talalay latex that’s firmer than the comfort layer above. This provides structural support and makes the bed more durable.
Nest Finch Mattress Firmness
Now let’s talk about the firmness and feel of the Nest Finch mattress. To determine a bed’s firmness, we use our 1 to 10 firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. We use 6.5 as the standard for medium-firm, the most common mattress firmness.
When lying on a bed in different positions, we compare how firm the bed feels to the hundreds of other mattresses we’ve tested and give it a numerical score to contextualize its firmness in comparison to other mattresses.
I ultimately rated the Nest Finch as 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, meaning it is a medium-firm mattress. While I felt the bed was somewhat firm, the plush upper layer gives an overall more medium-firm feel. I didn’t sink into the bed much — rather, I felt more “on top” of the bed, but still cushioned from the quilted cover.
Now as I mentioned before, you can choose between multiple firmness options when you purchase a Nest Finch. I tested the Medium model, so keep in mind the Plush or Firm options would likely feel different.

Sleeping Position and Body Weight
Since different people may not have the same experience on a mattress, let’s go over how sleepers of different weights and with different primary sleeping positions might feel on the Nest Finch.
Here’s my take on how different sleepers will feel on the Nest Finch mattress.
Is the Nest Finch a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – Light back sleepers should feel comfortable on the Nest Finch. I think it provides a good level of support for spinal alignment, while still feeling comfortable.
- Light Side Sleepers – The Medium model I tested is likely too firm for light side sleepers, meaning they won’t receive enough pressure relief on their shoulder and hip. The Plush version may work better for more contouring.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – Light stomach sleepers may find the Medium Finch model firm enough to keep their hips from sinking in, but they could also opt for the Firm version for even more support.
Is the Nest Finch a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130–250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – I think the Nest Finch is a great match for average weight back sleepers. These folks should feel well-supported and neutrally aligned, but also find some pleasant cushioning from the quilted cover.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – Average weight side sleepers will likely find the Medium model of the Nest Finch too firm. I certainly felt pressure buildup on my shoulder and hip in this position. However, the Plush version may work better for these folks.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The Medium model is likely too soft for most average weight stomach sleepers. I felt my hips sinking into the bed while lying on my stomach, so I recommend either the Firm model or a different firm mattress for these sleepers.
Is the Nest Finch a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – I think the Nest Finch could work for some heavy back sleepers, as it provides sturdy support and a cozy feel. However, I would also recommend looking into a mattress that has coils, as they tend to offer more support.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – I don’t think the Medium model would work well for heavy side sleepers, but like the other groups, the Plush version could work well to provide pressure relief. But again, a mattress with coils may provide better overall support.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – The Nest Finch may not be the best pick for heavy stomach sleepers, who likely need a much more supportive mattress to keep their hips lifted up and out of the structure. See our best mattresses for heavy people for some better options.
Nest Finch Mattress Performance
Remember those tests I mentioned at the beginning? It’s time to look at the results. We use a series of tests to measure factors like pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, and more to help you decide if a mattress fits your needs and lifestyle. These tests also help to provide some more objective information, as firmness and feel are fairly subjective factors.
Nest Finch Mattress Pain Relief Performance
First, let’s take a look at the Nest Finch’s pressure relieving capabilities. Pressure relief is important in particular for back and side sleepers, who need pressure relief around the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
We use a heat-mapping pressure map to assess how well a bed relieves pressure. It’s mat we lay out on top of a bed and then lie on in different sleeping positions. The mat uses thermal imaging to show pressure points on the body and creates a pressure map. On the map, blues and greens indicate low pressure, while reds and oranges indicate high pressure.
As you can see, the Nest Finch relieves pressure fairly well for back sleeping. This means back sleepers shouldn’t feel any pressure or pain caused by the mattress jamming up their joints, and that their lower back should feel adequately cushioned. For side sleeping, it’s a different story. There is a very noticeable pressure buildup on the shoulder, which indicates the shoulder isn’t well-cushioned. This could lead to joint pain over time.
Motion Transfer
If you’ve ever shared a bed with a partner or a pet, you know how important motion transfer can be in a mattress. Motion transfer is the amount of movement that travels through the mattress when it’s touched or disturbed. If your partner is tossing and turning all night, but you can’t feel a thing, that’s low motion transfer.
We come up with our motion-transfer score using a few different tests. The first one is simple: we just lie down on the mattress with a colleague, roll around, and see how much of each other’s movement we feel. We also place a full wine glass on the mattress, and see how much the wine moves around with us. If the liquid has zero to little movement, then it’s a safe bet that the mattress has low motion transfer, which is what you want to see.
Finally, there’s our seismometer test. This involves dropping a 10 pound steel ball from heights of four inches, eight inches and 12 inches, then measuring the disturbance it causes: the bigger the lines on the graph, the bigger the disturbance and the higher the motion transfer.
These results are just okay. While there is definitely some noticeable motion transfer on this bed, it isn’t terrible. You will likely feel motion from a partner or pet on this bed, especially larger movements like getting in and out of bed. Some smaller movements may be less detectable.
Responsiveness
Responsiveness is a measure of how easy it is to move around on the bed, or how quickly the bed responds to pressure. A slower pressure response can make moving on the bed more difficult. To test this out, I rolled around on the Nest Finch, changed between sleeping positions, and tried to bounce on the bed.
I found the Nest Finch very responsive. I had no issue moving around or changing between sleeping positions. It even feels quite bouncy!
Cooling
Cooling is an important factor for those who run warm, who live in hot climates, or who sleep with a partner. We first assess a bed’s cooling abilities by simply looking at the materials. Looking at the Nest Finch’s materials, the majority use of latex suggests this bed will sleep cool, as latex maintains a naturally cool temperature. Plus, the comfort layer is perforated, which allows for additional airflow.
We also test out each mattress with a device called a thermal gun, which uses color-coded imaging to measure how much and how quickly a mattress heats up when we lie down on it. If it heats up more than 15 degrees Fahrenheit, we consider it to have poor cooling capabilities. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling.
I took the initial temperature of the Nest Finch, then laid on the bed for five minutes, and took the temperature again. The temperature only increased by 4 degrees, so I was very impressed. This is what we would consider excellent cooling.
Edge Support
Edge support refers to how well the perimeter of the bed bears weight. Ideally, the sleeper should feel as supported on the edge of the bed as they did in the middle of the bed. To test edge support, I laid along the edge and sat on the edge to see how much the edge sagged or kept me supported.
I was very unimpressed by the Nest Finch’s edge support. When sitting, I basically sank all the way down to the bed frame — essentially no support at all. When I laid on the edge, the results were slightly better, but still not great.
Nest Finch Mattress Performance For Couples
When considering if a mattress is good for couples, we look at four of the factors covered above: motion transfer, cooling (two bodies produce more heat than one), responsiveness (for sex), and edge support (maximizes surface area). Based on the results of these tests, the Nest Finch is an okay mattress for couples, but not amazing. It scored very well on cooling and responsiveness, but pretty low on motion transfer and edge support. For more options, check out our best mattresses for couples.

My Final Thoughts about the Nest Finch Mattress
Now that I’ve covered all the tests, let’s finish up this review with some recommendations of who should and shouldn’t purchase the Nest Finch.
Who I Recommend the Nest Finch Mattress For
- Back sleepers should find the Medium model of the Nest Finch to be a great match, as it provides support and comfort.
- Hot sleepers should be very happy on the Nest Finch, as it has excellent cooling capabilities.
- Eco-conscious shoppers should appreciate all the natural materials utilized in the Nest Finch. Additionally, Nest’s Lifetime Renewal Exchange Program allows purchasers to swap out their comfort layer once it is worn out, which reduces the waste of buying an entire new mattress.
- Those who like a bouncy feel or need to easily move around on their mattress should appreciate the Nest Finch’s ultra-responsive feel.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Nest Finch Mattress For
- Couples who are easily disturbed by movement may want to consider a bed that isolates motion better.
- Couples or those who like to sleep along the edge may prefer a mattress with sturdier edges.
- Some heavy people may prefer a mattress with coils for sturdier support.

Nest Finch vs Nolah Natural
The Nolah Natural is an 11-inch mattress made with latex and coils. It has a softer-than-average feel — we rated it as a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The Nolah Natural has a plush feel that provides cushioning, but still feels quite bouncy.
- Price: The Nest Finch is slightly more expensive than the Nolah Natural, but both are over $2,000 at full retail price for a queen size mattress.
- Sleeping position: The Nolah Natural is a great fit for most back and side sleepers, thanks to its soft but supportive feel. Overall, it is too soft for stomach sleepers.
- Cooling: Made with cooling latex and breathable coils, the Nolah Natural is also a great choice for hot sleepers.
- Body weight: Because it is a hybrid mattress with coils, the Nolah Natural might be a better fit for heavy sleepers than the Nest Finch.

Nest Finch vs WinkBeds EcoCloud
The WinkBeds EcoCloud is a hybrid made with latex and coils. It has a zoned support system in the springs, meaning it is firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders and feet. This is meant to promote spinal alignment and prevent back pain. We rated the WinkBeds EcoCloud as a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, meaning it has a medium-firm feel, like the Nest Finch.
- Price: The WinkBeds EcoCloud is a bit less expensive than the Nest Finch, but is just about $2,000 for a queen size at full retail price, so they are in the same general price range.
- Sleeping position: With a medium-firm feel, the WinkBeds EcoCloud is best suited for back sleepers.
- Cooling: As a latex hybrid, the WinkBeds EcoCloud sleeps cool.
- Body weight: The use of coils in the WinkBeds EcoCloud makes it a slightly better option for heavy people than the Nest Finch.

Nest Finch vs Plank Firm Natural
The Plank Firm Natural is made with Talalay latex and coils, but a unique feature is that it is flippable. That means there is a comfort layer on each side of the bed — one is firm and the other is extra-firm, so you can flip the mattress to choose your firmness level preference. We rated the firm side 7 out of 10 and the extra-firm side 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
- Price: A queen size Plank Firm Natural and Nest Finch are roughly the same price.
- Sleeping position: With a firm feel on both sides, the Plank Firm is best suited for back and stomach sleepers. It isn’t a good fit for side sleepers, as it doesn’t offer enough pressure relief.
- Cooling: The use of cooling latex and breathable coils keeps the Plank Firm Natural sleeping cool.
- Body weight: The Plank Firm Natural’s hybrid construction may make it a better choice for heavy sleepers than the Nest Finch.

Other Models from Nest
The Finch isn’t the only model Nest Bedding offers, so let’s compare it to a couple other mattresses the brand sells.
Nest Finch vs Nest Sparrow
The Nest Sparrow is a memory foam hybrid mattress, available in multiple firmness options. It comes in Plush, Medium, and Firm models, like the Finch. You can also swap out the comfort layer, like you can with the Finch. We tested the Medium model and rated it 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
- Price: The Nest Finch and Nest Sparrow are roughly the same price, with the Finch costing just a couple hundred dollars more than the Sparrow for a queen size at full price.
- Sleeping position: The Medium model of the Sparrow is best suited for back sleepers. However, the Plush and Firm versions may work for more sleeping positions.
- Cooling: While it has a memory foam layer, the coils allow for airflow in this bed and it has a phase change material cover, which is cool to the touch. When we tested the Sparrow with the heat gun, it had a 6 degree change, which is not much more than the Finch. These are both great cooling options.
- Body weight: The Sparrow is probably a better choice for heavy people, since it has coils.

Nest Finch vs Nest Owl
The Nest Owl is a latex hybrid with a pillow top, so it could be a good alternative to the Finch if you prefer coils. It comes in three firmness options, like the other Nest beds, and its comfort layer is swappable. We tested the Medium version and rated it as 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, meaning it is just softer than average.
- Price: The Nest Finch and Nest Owl are about the same price.
- Sleeping position: The Medium version of the Nest Owl is great for back and side sleeping, thanks to its softer feel and supportive coils.
- Cooling: Made with latex and coils, the Nest Owl has a great cooling construction. When we tested it with our heat gun, it had about a 6 degree change, meaning it has good cooling capabilities.
- Body weight: The Nest Owl is likely a better pick for heavy people than the Finch, because it has coils.

Our Review Process
At Sleepopolis, our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress.
