Nolah’s best-selling mattress model, the Nolah Evolution 15, is a hybrid mattress that combines layers of foam with individually pocketed coils. With a plush pillow top, this bed offers some soft cushioning at the hips and shoulders, while also providing firm support that promotes proper spinal alignment. This bed comes in three different firmness models, and I’ll be reviewing the Luxury Firm in this review.
I’m a certified sleep science coach and have been testing and reviewing mattresses at Sleepopolis for three years. I work with a team of expert testers to put each mattress through a series of evaluations using our medically approved testing methodology. Over the years, we’ve tested more than 330 beds in our Charlotte, NC studio to help identify the best mattresses on the market.
We work closely with a network of medical professionals, including board-certified doctors, physical therapists, registered nurses, and sleep experts, to ensure our findings and recommendations are accurate. Our chief medical advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, provides us with expert medical advice for different sleepers based on their body type and sleeping positions. We also invited our chief medical product tester, Dr. Joe Tedesco, DPT, OSC, ATC, CSCS, into our studio to test the Nolah Evolution and evaluate it for pain relief.
When we tested the Nolah Evolution, we found a balance between pressure relief and support, which makes it a great choice for side and back sleeping. The bed leans a tad firmer than average, so some sleepers may find enough support in the stomach-sleeping position as well.
The Nolah Evolution’s hybrid construction offers the cushioning of memory foam with the responsiveness of coils. The Luxury Firm model is a good option for side and back sleepers, though there are Plush and Firm versions as well. Those who share a bed may also appreciate its low motion transfer, so you won’t be disturbed by a partner’s movements and its solid edge support to allow you to maximize surface area. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“There’s enough cushioning for side sleepers to prevent pressure from building at the hips and shoulders. The mattress also scored highly in motion isolation, edge support, cooling, and responsiveness, all of which are important to couples.” – Riley Otis, staff writer and certified sleep science coach
Nolah Evolution Mattress Overview
The Nolah Evolution is a luxury mattress that has a soft pillow top for extra contouring. In terms of firmness, this bed leans slightly firmer than medium-firm, falling at a 7 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale. This feel and construction make it a great choice for back sleepers and side sleepers who enjoy feeling lifted while also experiencing slight sinkage at their pressure points.
The mattress is 15” tall, made in the USA, and has obtained multiple third-party certifications that affirm the quality and safety of the materials. A bed-in-a-box, it arrives compressed to your door and ready to unwrap and inflate. Just note that the Evolution is quite heavy, with a queen size weighing 115 pounds, so you may need an extra set of hands to facilitate this process.
During testing, this mattress stood out to us as one of the best mattresses for couples. The Nolah Evolution earned at least 4 stars on our cooling, motion isolation, responsiveness, and edge support tests, all of which are important to those who sleep with a partner. When we combined all of our testing scores, the mattress earned 4.7 stars overall.

Nolah Evolution Mattress Sleepopolis Scores
Nolah Evolution Value
When we assess a mattress’s value, we look at the quality of the materials and the bed’s overall performance during testing to see if they match the price. The Nolah Evolution is a luxury mattress made with very high-quality materials, many of which are proprietary and exclusive to Nolah. Several of these materials have specific cooling technology built into them, which helped the bed score 4.5 stars on our cooling test. The foams inside the mattress are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they’re free from heavy metals, harmful chemicals, and ozone depleters. The entire mattress is also GREENGUARD Gold certified, so it meets strict standards for low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
When we take a look at the Nolah Evolution’s price, it’s more expensive than a standard mattress. This is because it’s a luxury mattress, so it contains upgraded features, such as a cooling cover, Euro top layer, zoned support coils, and breathable border gusset. Based on the materials, construction, certifications, and luxury features, I think this is a high-value mattress. The price matches the quality of the product, but it may not be affordable for some shoppers, depending on their budget.
What Is the Nolah Evolution Made Of?
When we evaluate a mattress’s materials, we get up close and personal. To get a better understanding of what’s going on inside, we cut into the side of the bed to examine each individual layer.
The Nolah Evolution is a 15-inch luxury hybrid mattress containing several layers of foam and an innerspring coil support system. Made in the USA, this bed contains CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD Gold certifications to ensure the quality and safety of the materials.
When we cut this bed open, we found several layers designed to promote airflow and keep sleepers cool. The bed itself was cool to the touch, and many of the foams were designed to combat heat trapping. When we interacted with the layers, we thought they felt durable and of excellent quality.

Cover – A soft cover made from breathable organic cotton and proprietary ArcticTex fibers, which Nolah says help dissipate heat and wick away moisture.
Euro Top – A 2-inch Euro topper quilted with breathable foam and high-thermal conductivity quilting, which means heat can easily flow through it without getting trapped.
Cooling Gusset – A 4-inch AirBreath border gusset promotes further airflow and prevents heat trapping.
Comfort Layer – A layer of Nolah’s AirFoam, which is a more breathable alternative to memory foam. It has zoned hole punches to allow for more flexibility at the shoulders and firmer support at the lower back.
Responsive Layer – A 2-inch layer of foam for additional pressure relief and support.
Transition Layer – A 1-inch foam layer that transitions the sleeper onto a coil layer and helps absorb motion.
Support Layer – A layer of 8-inch individually wrapped coils that are zoned for support, meaning their firmness fluctuates depending on where the sleeper’s body needs more lift. The coils are also thicker at the perimeter to reinforce the edges.
Base Layer – A final 1-inch layer of foam that gives the coils something to bounce off.

Nolah Evolution Mattress Firmness
Firmness can sometimes be subjective — what feels firm to one sleeper may feel too soft to another sleeper, especially if they have a different preferred sleeping position or body type. To take the guesswork out of mattress firmness, we invite several expert testers to lie on a mattress in three sleeping positions. They each provide their personal firmness rating, and then we average them together to create our final firmness score. We rate firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. We consider a score of 6.5 out of 10 to mark a true medium-firm mattress, which is the most common mattress firmness.

The Nolah Evolution in the Luxury Firm model falls at a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This means it leans slightly towards the firmer side of the scale. The top layers provide some cushioning and softness, but are still firm enough to support the body and keep it from sinking too far.
When our tester Erin Chiles tried the Nolah Evolution, she said, “I felt like I was floating on top of the soft, pillow-top layer. It hugs my body nicely, and I could feel the inner layers of the mattress supporting me.”
Nolah Evolution Mattress Performance
When looking for a new mattress, there are a few factors you should consider. Our testers Erin Chiles, Sosha Lewis, Asha Birjah, and Caine Wilkes came together in our studio to test the Nolah Evolution for pressure relief, motion isolation, responsiveness, cooling, and edge support.
Our tests collect both quantitative and qualitative data that allows us to understand how different sleepers may feel on this bed. Below, I’ll summarize each test and how the Nolah Evolution performed.
Nolah Evolution Pressure Relief Performance
Pressure relief is one of the most important factors we test for. Our Chief Medical Product Tester Dr. Joe Tedesco emphasizes the importance of even weight distribution when sleeping to prevent pressure from building at the body’s sensitive pressure points.
We test a mattress’s ability to relieve pressure using a specialized mat that we roll onto the surface of the bed. Our testers take turns lying on the mat in the back- and side-sleeping positions and note whether they feel pressure building anywhere. The mat is able to sense where pressure is higher and lower and create a color-coded graphic of the sleeper using thermal imaging technology. Areas displaying blue and green indicate good pressure relief, while yellow and red suggest a buildup of pressure.
Your body type can largely influence pressure buildup, as your weight determines how far you’ll sink into a bed’s layers. Because of this, we invited three testers of varying body weights into our studio to test the Nolah Evolution. The pressure mat provides us with each tester’s average pressure buildup for each sleeping position in pounds per square inch (PSI). We compare their average PSI scores to the overall average PSI across all mattresses we’ve tested. The average PSI across all mattresses is 14.9 in the side-sleeping position and 12.4 in the back-sleeping position, so we look for below-average PSIs to determine which mattresses relieve pressure well.
When our testers tried the Nolah Evolution, they gave an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars in both the side- and back-sleeping positions. Their average PSI was 14.3 when side sleeping and 13.2 when back sleeping.

Our lightweight and average-weight testers felt great pressure relief in the side-sleeping position due to the cushiony pillow top that relieved tension at the hips and shoulders. These testers had PSI scores of 13.4 and 12.5, respectively. On her side, lightweight tester Asha Birjah said, “My neck and shoulders feel great. This bed has a really good balance between firmness and contouring, and I’m not feeling pain anywhere on my body.” Although our heavy tester, Caine Wilkes, had a PSI that was higher than average, coming in at 16.9, he still reported no pressure building at his shoulder. He sank further into this mattress than our other testers, so his spine still wasn’t perfectly aligned. To rectify this, we recommend heavy sleepers get the Firm model, rather than the Luxury Firm.
We invited Dr. Tedesco to try the Nolah Evolution in the side-sleeping position and evaluate its ability to relieve pain. When he first lay down, he felt good spinal alignment and comfort without significant pressure buildup. “I have a feeling of weightlessness, which I don’t always get when I’m on my side,” he said. As he continued to rest in this position, he started to feel a bit of pressure building on his shoulder, so he doesn’t recommend the bed for sleepers with shoulder pain.

Our testers also found pressure relief when trying the Nolah Evolution on their backs. Once again, our lightweight and average-weight testers had lower PSI scores than average for this position, which were 11.3 and 12.6, respectively. Asha said, “I’m getting relief for my neck pain because my spine is so aligned. I feel support across my entire body while also melting into the mattress.” Our heavy tester’s PSI was 15.6 in this position, which is higher than average, but he still felt great contouring at his lower back and didn’t detect pressure building. “My spine is in line and feels equally supported,” he said. “I’m surprised that it’s providing this much support given the softness of the pillow top.”

When Dr. Tedesco tried the mattress on his back, he felt a lot of pressure relief and enough support to align his spine. “My feet, ankles, knees, and hips were aligned, and my pelvis was relaxed,” he said. “I didn’t feel any anterior tilt, which is often what creates or exacerbates hip and back pain.” In addition to relieving hip and back pain, he thinks this bed is a great choice for sleepers with sciatica, scoliosis, or lower back arthritis.

Overall, this bed is most compatible with lightweight and average-weight side and back sleepers. Heavy sleepers may find enough support on this mattress, but we’d recommend opting for the Firm model of the Nolah Evolution for even stronger support.
Nolah Evolution Motion Isolation
Motion isolation is an important performance measure for anyone who sleeps with a partner. When a bed has good motion isolation, it’s able to absorb the vibrations caused by tossing and turning and prevent the motion from disturbing the sleeper on the other side of the bed. This is especially important if one or both couples sleep lightly, as it can promote sound sleep and fewer middle-of-the-night wakeups. We assessed the Nolah Evolution’s motion isolation using a ripple test and a partner test and found an overall score of 5 out of 5 stars.
For our ripple test, tester Sosha Lewis placed a large tub of water on one side of the bed and then moved around on the other side. We observed the movement of the water and whether it was impacted by Sosha’s motion. When she got in bed, she said, “There was just a slight disturbance, but it was less than when the water ripples in Jurassic Park.” When she started rolling around and switching between sleeping positions, the water was barely impacted. “I vigorously tossed and turned, and the water remained at a low ripple,” she said. Since these were excellent results, she gave this test 5 out of 5 stars.

Next, Sosha put on a blindfold and lay down on one side of the mattress. Another tester then climbed into bed next to her and switched between sleeping positions, while Sosha paid attention to whether she could detect their movement. “I felt the most motion when my partner sat down on the bed,” she said. “I barely noticed her movement when she lay down or switched positions, and it didn’t disturb me at all.” This is exactly what we want to happen during this test, so she gave it another 5-star rating.
Since this bed earned 5 stars overall, I think it’s a great choice for anyone who shares their bed. Even if you sleep very lightly or have a restless partner, you’re very unlikely to feel them tossing and turning, especially if you’re asleep.
Nolah Evolution Responsiveness
Responsiveness refers to how quickly a mattress returns to its original shape after it’s been pressed down on. Typically, hybrid mattresses like the Nolah Evolution are fairly bouncy and responsive due to the layer of springy coils. Based on our four responsiveness tests, the Nolah Evolution earned 4 stars in this category. This means it’s not bouncy like a trampoline, but it’s relatively easy to move around on without feeling stuck in the foam layers. Most combination sleepers should be able to move around without issue, but people with mobility issues should be mindful of the deep sinkage, which may slightly inhibit movement.
Switch test: First up is our switch test, which involves a tester switching from their back to their side to their stomach on the mattress. The tester observes how easy it is to move around on and whether they’re experiencing any bounce that aids mobility. They also note whether they feel trapped in the foam layers when trying to roll. When Sosha performed this test, she found it fairly easy to move around on. “The soft pillow top does provide some resistance,” she said. “This might make it more difficult for people with mobility issues to switch positions, but I think the vast majority of people will find it easy.”
Responsiveness test: Next, tester Erin Chiles quantified the bed’s response to pressure. She placed a 53-pound kettlebell onto the mattress and allowed it to fully sink in. Then, she pulled the weight straight up and used a stopwatch to record how long it took the mattress to rise up. It took approximately 2.61 seconds for the bed to return to its original shape, which is longer than average.

Sinkage test: Erin then grabbed the kettlebell again so she could measure the mattress’s sinkage. She placed the weight on the center of the mattress and used a ruler to measure how many inches it sank. She found 4.19 inches of sinkage, which is deeper than the 3.25-inch average. This means it qualifies as a mattress with “deep sinkage.”
Bounce test: Finally, we get to test how bouncy the mattress is. We start by climbing a ladder until we’re 6 feet above the bed. Then, we drop a 25-pound steel ball onto its surface and measure the bounce height using a yardstick on the wall. The ball rebounded 21.5 inches into the air, which is significantly higher than the 16.3-inch average, classifying this bed as “high bounce.”
Nolah Evolution Cooling
If you’re a hot sleeper, you may want to pay close attention to this section. Many mattresses, like the Nolah Evolution, boast cooling features that help with temperature regulation to prevent overheating. We put the Nolah Evolution’s cooling to the test and awarded it an impressive 4.5-star rating.
Thermal gun test: We measure a mattress’s temperature in our studio using a thermal gun to determine how it reacts to body heat. First, we record the bed’s initial temperature before a tester lies on it for 5 minutes. Then, we take the bed’s temperature again and calculate how many degrees it heats up. If the temperature increases by fewer than 5 degrees, we consider it to have excellent cooling. An increase of 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, and more than 15 degrees indicates poor cooling.
The Nolah Evolution’s temperature went from 67.2 degrees to 72.1 degrees. This is a 4.9-degree increase, indicating excellent cooling abilities. If you’re worried about your body temperature rising as you sleep, this bed should help keep you cool and comfortable.

Cover test: Before our tester lies down on the bed, they feel the cover. Sosha thought the organic cotton and cooling fibers in the cover gave it a cool-to-the-touch feel that felt soothing on the skin. She said the cover remained cool the entire time she was lying on the bed.
Feel test: As our tester continues to rest on the bed, they observe how the mattress is responding to their body and whether they can feel it warming up beneath them. Sosha actually owns the previous version of the Nolah Evolution to help combat her husband’s hot sleeping. She thought this new, upgraded version of the Evolution was even cooler than the original. “I had just worked out right before we started testing, and my temperature hadn’t yet regulated,” she said. “I could feel the heat leaving my body as I was on the Nolah.”
Nolah Evolution Edge Support
When we discuss edge support, we’re talking about how strong the perimeter of the bed is. Edge support can be a durability indicator, as sturdy edges are less likely to sag over time. This can also appeal to solo sleepers and couples who like to spread out, as it allows them to use the entire surface of the bed, which makes it feel larger. People with mobility issues should also look for a mattress with strong edges that can be relied on for stability when getting in and out of bed. We tested edge support on the Nolah Evolution using a tape measure test, a seated test, and a full body test to create a final score of 4.6 stars.
Tape measure test: This test, which we also call the weighted edge support test, involves stacking weighted plates together and placing them directly on the edge of the mattress. We create three weighted stacks to represent three body types — a 99-pound stack, a 154-pound stack, and a 198-pound stack. We then use a tape measure to see how many inches the layers compress under the weight. From the lightest to the heaviest stack, the Nolah Evolution’s sinkage went from 1 inch to 3 inches to 4 inches. As we added weight, the edges collapsed further; however, they still remained strong, considering the bed is 12 inches tall originally. When we combine the ratings from all three sinkage tests, the Nolah Evolution gets an average of 4.7 stars.

Seated test: For this test, someone sits directly on the edge of the bed with their feet planted on the floor. They observe how stable they feel and whether they feel at risk of slipping off the mattress. Then, they stand up several times and note how easy it was. When Erin performed this test, she said, “I can tell the edges are reinforced and they feel sturdy, but it’s sort of slippery and I’m sliding down.” Since the Nolah has a smooth cover, this may have contributed to the slippery feeling, and we think adding sheets will rectify the issue. Since Erin still felt secure overall, she gave the seated test 4.5 stars.

Full body test: Last, our tester lies near the edge of the bed on their back, side, and stomach and observes their stability. Erin says she felt very supported in all three sleeping positions. She never felt like she was about to fall or slip off the bed and was overall comfortable. The edges were just as supportive as the center of the mattress.

Based on these tests, older adults and people with mobility issues should be able to rely on the strength of the edges for stability when getting in and out of bed. They’ll be able to bear down on the edge without the layers compressing too much. Couples and solo sleepers should also be able to sleep right up to the edge without feeling at risk of falling off.
Nolah Evolution Mattress Performance for Couples
The categories most relevant to couples are cooling, motion isolation, responsiveness, and edge support. When we consider how the Nolah Evolution performed in these categories, I think it’s a fantastic choice for couples.
First, I have to call out the Nolah’s outstanding motion isolation, which earned the full 5 stars. Even if your partner is constantly moving around and switching sleeping positions next to you, I don’t think it will disrupt your sleep. I was also impressed by the 4.6-star edge support, which allows couples to spread out and sleep right up to the edge instead of crowding in the middle of the bed.
This bed also performed very well on our cooling test, earning 4.5 stars. Two bodies heat up quicker than just one, so excellence in cooling can help prevent overheating. The 4-star responsiveness is also nice for sexually active couples, as it helps them switch from one position to the next.
Other Performance Factors to Consider
While those tests gave us a deep insight into the Nolah Evolution’s performance, there are still a few elements you may want to keep in mind.
Sex
The best mattress for sex typically scores high in our responsiveness, cooling, and edge support categories. Responsiveness is important because it helps couples seamlessly move around without getting trapped in the bed’s layers. We also appreciate good cooling abilities because they prevent things from getting too steamy. Edge support is also something to consider, as it allows you to use the entire mattress and feel supported right up to the very edge. Based on the 4-star responsiveness, 4.5-star cooling, and 4.6-star edge support, we think the Nolah Evolution a wonderful option for sexually active couples.
Noise
Erin Chiles tested the Nolah Evolution for noise and found it to be quiet. She did detect a very slight crunching noise when she got into bed but didn’t find it loud or disturbing, so she still gave the mattress the full 5 stars for noise.
Base Compatibility
While Nolah says this mattress can be used with an adjustable base, it tends to work best when there are two people on the bed. Otherwise, it has a hard time bending with the base. Still, the mattress should become more flexible over time, and when it is at an angle, it’s still very comfortable.
Durability
We assess durability in mattresses by looking at its materials, support, edge support, and warranty. Strong edges can indicate durability, as they’re less likely to sag over time. The same goes for an overall strong support system. We also look for high-quality materials that won’t deteriorate after just a few years. The warranty also gives us an idea of how long the brand expects the mattress to last.
Overall, I am very confident in the Nolah Evolution’s durability. Not only does this mattress feel supportive at every layer — the structural integrity extends across the entire bed right up to the edge. Since these edges earned 4.6 stars during testing, I don’t foresee them sagging over time. The materials are also very high-quality; Nolah’s proprietary foams have met third-party standards for quality and safety. Finally, the limited lifetime warranty earned 4.5 stars from us because it shows Nolah’s confidence in the mattress’s longevity.

Nolah Evolution Sleeping Position and Body Weight
As mentioned, your weight and sleeping position are the largest determining factors for how a mattress will feel for you. For example, something that feels very firm to me might feel super soft to you if you have a different body type and preferred sleeping position. Below, I’ll break down each weight class and how the Nolah Evolution will likely feel in different positions.
Before we dive into our recommendations, though, we want to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 230 pounds).
As a general takeaway, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average-weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average-weight sleepers and tend to sink into the mattress more. As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.
Is the Nolah Evolution a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – These sleepers should feel a lot of cushioning at the lower back and enough lift to keep the spine neutrally aligned.
- Light Side Sleepers – The firm feel keeps the spine aligned in this position with just a touch of sinkage at the shoulders. This bed will feel firmer than average to these sleepers, so it’s a great choice if they already prefer a firm mattress.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – Stomach sleepers should find plenty of support to prop their hips in line with their shoulders.

Is the Nolah Evolution a Good Mattress for Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 pounds)?
- Average-Weight Back Sleepers – Back sleepers can find excellent spinal alignment on this mattress, as well as some lumbar support from the pillow-top layer.
- Average-Weight Side Sleepers – These sleepers should find enough cushioning at their hips and shoulders to prevent pressure buildup while also feeling “on top” of the bed.
- Average-Weight Stomach Sleepers – There should be enough lift on this bed to keep the spine neutrally aligned, but sleepers should be wary of sinking in too far at the hips.
Is the Nolah Evolution a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 230 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – These sleepers should find enough support to prevent too much sinkage, but we’d recommend opting for the Firm model.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – These sleepers might find a touch too much sinkage in this position for the spine to be completely aligned, so we recommend the Firm model.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – This mattress is not supportive enough for heavy stomach sleepers.

Our Review Process
At Sleepopolis, our team of certified sleep science coaches personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time lying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress.
