Avocado is a brand that’s all about creating organic and eco-friendly sleep products, and much like real avocados, all their products are made in California by hand.

In this review, I’ll be taking a close look at their Organic Latex mattress topper. Mattress toppers are a great option for changing up the feel of your mattress without having to completely replace your mattress. I’ll go over what this topper is made of, how it feels, and who it’s going to be best for.

Who is the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper Best For?

As with many purchases you make, there’s a lot to consider before choosing a topper. Factors like your sleeping position, body type, whether you sleep hot, and your budget can help you decide if a topper is right for you.

One note: the Avocado Organic Latex mattress topper is available in both a plush and firm version. I tested the plush topper for this review.

Who I recommend the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper for

  • Back sleepers should be quite comfortable on the Avocado Organic Latex topper. I found the plush version provided a comfortable, but supportive feel and I imagine the firm version would work nicely for back sleepers who like a firmer feel.
  • Hot sleepers will also likely enjoy all the cooling materials used in this mattress topper. A naturally cool latex fill, a layer of thermoregulating wool, and a breathable cotton cover keep this topper as cool as a cucumber (or maybe as cool as an avocado?).
  • Shoppers who are looking for a high-quality organic product will appreciate that this topper is made with natural latex, cotton, and wool.

Who I don’t recommend the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper for

  • I think the Avocado Organic Latex mattress topper is too firm for many side sleepers, even in the plush version. If you’re a side sleeper looking for serious pressure relief, I’d recommend a memory foam mattress topper to get that contouring.
  • Because this topper is made with all natural and organic materials, it is more expensive than many polyurethane foam mattress toppers, so it might not be the best pick for budget shoppers.
  • While this topper comes in a plush and a firm version, this topper overall has a bouncy and responsive feel. If you’re looking for a super plush mattress topper, the Avocado Organic Latex topper may not be the best pick for you.

What is the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper Made Of?

Cover: The cover of this topper is made from 100 percent organic cotton, which is certified organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Cotton is a breathable material, which is a perk for hot sleepers.

Fill: The fill of the Avocado mattress topper is a layer of organic wool and organic latex rubber foam. The wool is also GOTS certified and the latex foam is Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certified. Latex foam is a common alternative to memory foam used in natural products, as it is made from the sap of rubber trees. To learn more, see our memory foam vs latex comparison.

In addition to the certifications mentioned above, the Avocado topper is also MADE SAFE certified to use ingredients that don’t harm human health, animals, aquatic life, or ecosystems. It is also GREENGUARD Gold certified to meet third-party emission standards and Formaldehyde Free Certified.

This topper is available in six standard sizes: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king. And as mentioned earlier, it is available in either a plush or a firm feel.

If you’re interested in this topper but don’t want a topper made with animal products (wool), Avocado also makes a vegan mattress topper that uses similar organic materials, but no animal products.

How Does the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper Feel

I tested the Avocado Organic Latex mattress topper by laying on it in different sleeping positions to see how much support and/or pressure relief it offered.

As I mentioned before, this mattress topper comes in two firmness options: plush and firm. I tested the plush version and I found it to have a responsive, bouncy, and buoyant feel — fairly classic for latex, in my experience. That responsiveness makes the topper easy to move around on, which is nice for combination sleepers or those with mobility issues.

P1024464

I definitely felt some cushioning on this topper, but didn’t sink in as deeply as I’ve felt on memory foam mattress toppers.

One of the purposes of a mattress topper is to change the feel of an uncomfortable or old mattress, without having to buy a brand new mattress. To test how the Avocado topper would change different mattresses, I tested it on beds of three different firmnesses.

Soft: Adding the Avocado Organic Latex topper to a soft mattress gave the bed a more medium firmness. The latex is fairly supportive, and while it offers some relief on pressure points, it overall keeps you “on top” of the surface of the topper, instead of sinking in deeply. If your mattress is too soft for your taste, but you don’t want a fully firm mattress, this topper could work well.

P1024482

Medium-firm: I didn’t think adding this topper to a medium-firm mattress changed the firmness level much. Overall, I would still say it felt medium-firm. However, putting this latex mattress topper on a non-latex mattress did give it a more buoyant feel.

Firm: Adding this topper on a firm mattress made the bed feel a little softer, but not a dramatic change. I thought it lowered the firmness to medium-firm, with the latex offering a bit more cushioning than the firm mattress surface below.

My Verdict on the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper

If you’re looking for an eco-friendly mattress topper that’s made with natural materials, the Avocado Organic Latex topper is a great option. The topper is a high-quality product and being made with durable latex, you can expect it to hold up well over time. I thought the topper was quite comfortable, with the latex foam allowing you to sink in just a bit, but overall providing an elevating, responsive feel.

P1024475

I think it makes a particularly great option for back sleepers, who could choose either firmness level depending on personal preference. The plush version that I tested could work well for back sleepers with back pain, as the latex foam fills in around the lumbar region for a bit of relief. It could also work for stomach sleepers, although I would recommend the firm mattress topper to help maintain proper spinal alignment.

Hot sleepers should also be quite comfortable on this topper, as the latex is naturally cooling, the layer of wool regulates temperature, and the organic cotton cover is breathable. That breathability allows for airflow that keeps hot air from being trapped.

P1024487

My biggest complaint with this topper is the cover is not machine washable, which would be helpful for keeping the topper clean overall. Additionally, I don’t think it’s the best option for side sleepers, at least for those who are looking for serious pressure relief on hip or shoulder pain. (For a great side sleeper topper, check out the Tempur-Adapt mattress topper.)
