The Birch Organic pillow is a GREENGUARD Gold certified product that is a great for back and side sleepers.

Is the Birch Organic Pillow a Good Pillow for You?

No pillow is one size fits all, so let’s go over my recommendations for the Birch Organic pillow.

Who should try the Birch Organic pillow

  • Back and side sleepers should be comfortable on the Birch Organic pillow. I found my head and neck were properly supported in both of these sleeping positions on the Birch Organic.
  • Shoppers looking for an organic pillow will appreciate all the natural materials used in this pillow, including natural latex, organic wool, and organic cotton.
  • Sleepers who prefer a moldable pillow should find the crushed Talalay latex fill easy to shape to their preferences.

Who should not try the Birch Organic pillow

  • The Birch Organic is not the most comfortable pillow for stomach sleepers. I think it’s too lofty and not soft enough for stomach sleepers to prevent their necks from craning.
  • Shoppers who value easy cleaning may not be best matched with the Birch Organic pillow, as it is spot-clean only.
  • Sleepers who prefer a solid foam pillow may not like the moldability of this pillow. Shredded latex is similar to a block of latex foam, but provides a different sleeping experience.

What Does the Birch Organic Pillow Feel Like?

I personally tested the Birch Organic pillow to get a sense of its feel and who it would be best suited for. However, feel is subjective, so you may have a different experience than I did.

Birch Organic Pillow Firmness

At Sleepopolis, we categorize pillows’ firmness as either soft, medium, or firm. Each firmness is best for a different sleeping position to maintain spinal alignment: soft for stomach sleepers, medium for back sleepers, and firm for side sleepers.

I found the Birch Organic to have a medium firmness. Your head and neck do sink into it a bit, but the buoyant latex fill provides some elevation. Additionally, because the filling is shredded, you can mold the pillow around you to create the most comfortable shape for you.

Birch Organic Pillow Loft

Like firmness, each sleeping position generally sleeps best on a different loft, or height, of pillow. I recommend a high loft for side sleepers, a medium loft for back sleepers, and a low loft for stomach sleepers.

The Birch Organic pillow has a medium loft, although it does compress a decent amount when you lie on it.

Now let’s go over my experience with this pillow in different sleeping positions.

Side — I found the Birch Organic pillow to be comfortable for side sleeping. While it’s not a super firm or lofty pillow, I found it kept my neck elevated enough to stay in line with my spine while lying on my side. I also liked that I could fluff and mold the pillow to get more or less fill directly under me.

Back — I thought the Birch Organic was a great pillow for back sleeping. The medium loft and medium firmness are just right for back sleeping. The shredded latex offers a nice mix of support and pressure relief for lying on your back. Since you can sink in and mold the fill, your neck won’t end up craning upwards, but is still supported.

Stomach — I didn’t think the Birch Organic was great for stomach sleeping. I didn’t think it was soft enough or had a low enough loft to prevent my neck from craning while I was laying on my stomach. For better options, check out our best pillows for stomach sleepers.

Under the Arm — I think the Birch Organic is a good pillow for sleeping with under the arm. It’s very huggable, because the shredded fill allows you to fluff and mold it.

Between the Legs — The Birch Organic pillow could work well for sleeping with between the legs. The shredded fill allows your legs to experience some pressure relief, and it molds around your legs so that your hips won’t be pushed out of alignment.

What is the Birch Organic Pillow Made Of?

Cover: The Birch Organic’s cover is made from 100 percent organic cotton. The cotton is Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified to be organic. This cotton cover is soft and breathable. It also has a zipper, which allows you to remove it.

Fill: The fill of this pillow is shredded natural Talalay latex sourced from Southeast Asia. This latex is eco-INSTITUT certified to be a low-pollution and low-emission product. According to Birch, the latex fill is also hypoallergenic, mite-resistant, and antimicrobial.

The latex is wrapped in organic Birch wool, which is sourced from New Zealand. This wool is only sourced from farms that comply with the PGG Wrightson Wool Integrity program, which ensures ethically grown wool. The wool in this pillow also acts as a natural fire retardant, as wool fibers turn to carbon when exposed to an open flame.

The Birch Organic pillow has several other certifications for its materials, including the GREENGUARD Gold certification, Fair Trade certification, and Forest Stewardship Council certification. Additionally, the Birch Organic pillow is manufactured in the USA.

This pillow is available in either a standard or king size. I tested the standard size for this Birch pillow review.

Is the Birch Organic Pillow Good for Hot Sleepers?

I think the Birch Organic pillow is a great pick for hot sleepers. The organic cotton cover is breathable, allowing air to circulate out of the pillow. The shredded fill also promotes breathability, on top of the fact that latex maintains a naturally cool temperature. Plus, the wool wrapped around the latex fill provides moisture-wicking and temperature regulating effects.

Altogether, that makes for a great cooling pillow. But if you want to see more options, take a look at our best cooling pillow roundup.

My Final Thoughts About the Birch Organic Pillow

Overall, I think the Birch Organic pillow is a high-quality, cozy pillow for side and back sleepers made with organic materials. The shredded latex provides a springy feel, but still offers pressure relief. The moldability of the fill allows you to shape the pillow exactly how you want it. Plus, the materials used in this pillow work well to keep you sleeping cool.

However, this pillow is not particularly comfortable for stomach sleeping, as it isn’t soft enough nor does it have a low enough loft. It’s also not a great pick for people who prioritize easy cleaning, as the pillow is spot-clean only and cannot be machine washed or dried.

Birch Organic Pillow Vs

Now let’s compare the Birch Organic pillow to one of its competitors: the Avocado Green pillow.

Birch Organic Pillow vs Avocado Green Pillow

  • The Avocado Green pillow is another natural pillow. Like the Birch Organic, it has a GOTS certified organic cotton cover. However, the Avocado Green pillow is filled with a mix of organic latex, certified by the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), and GOTS certified organic kapok. Kapok is a natural cotton-like fiber derived from the seed pods of the kapok tree.
  • The fill of the Avocado Green pillow is adjustable, so you can remove it to lower the loft. Avocado also sends you an extra fill bag so you can add fill to raise the loft.
  • Unlike the Birch Organic pillow, the Avocado Green pillow’s cover can be machine washed. But the inner fill is still spot-clean only.
