Every sleeper has different needs from their pillow, so let’s quickly go over who I do and don’t recommend this pillow for.
Who Should Try the Boll & Branch Down Pillow
- All three sleeping positions can do well on this pillow, depending on the density you choose. I’d recommend the Soft for stomach sleepers, Medium for back sleepers, and Firm for side sleepers.
- Folks who like a fluffy, cloud-like pillow should love how plush and comfy the down in this pillow feels.
- Sleepers with allergies should appreciate that this pillow’s down fill is triple-washed and the pillow can be machine washed, since down can be known for collecting allergens. (Although this pillow is not hypoallergenic.)
Who Should Not Try the Boll & Branch Down Pillow
- Those who like a very firm pillow or who are looking for lots of support might find the Boll & Branch Down pillow too cushy. Consider a memory foam or latex pillow for a more firm option.
- Budget shoppers are likely to find this pillow a bit expensive.
- Vegans or people who want to avoid animal products may want to consider a down-alternative pillow. See our best down-alternative pillows for some good options.
What Does the Boll & Branch Down Pillow Feel Like?
Now let’s go over what the Boll & Branch Down Chamber pillow feels like. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, so you may have a different experience than I did.
Boll & Branch Down Pillow Firmness
Here at Sleepopolis, we rate a pillow’s firmness as either soft, medium, or firm. Each of these firmnesses is best suited to a different sleeping position — soft for stomach sleepers, medium for back sleepers, and firm for side sleepers. These different firmnesses help to maintain neck alignment while sleeping in these different positions.
As I mentioned up to, the Boll & Branch Down Chamber pillow comes in three densities: Soft, Medium, and Firm. I tested the Medium version, so keep in mind that the Soft version will be softer and the Firm version will be firmer.
Overall, I felt the Medium Boll & Branch Down pillow was medium-soft. It wasn’t fully soft, because I did feel some support, but I also felt it was still too soft to be considered a true medium firmness. My head and neck easily sank into the plush down, but not so much that there was no support. I’d say this pillow has a very cloud-like, high-end hotel pillow feel.
Boll & Branch Down Pillow Loft
We also like to assess pillow’s by their loft, or height, categorizing them into low, medium, or high loft. A low loft pillow is best for stomach sleepers, a medium loft pillow is best for back sleepers, and a high loft pillow is best for side sleepers.
I’d say the Boll & Branch Down pillow has a medium loft, but I will note it does compress underneath you a fair amount, since it is made of down. It may feel a bit lower to some folks as their head and neck sink in. Again, keep in mind the loft may differ slightly depending on the density you choose.
Now let’s talk about how this pillow feels in each sleeping position.
Side — I felt the Boll & Branch Down pillow was too soft for side sleeping. I wasn’t getting enough neck support and felt my head dipping down too much. The Firm density may work better, but the Medium was too soft for me.
Back — I found the Boll & Branch Down pillow quite comfortable in this position. The medium firmness and medium loft work well for back sleepers, especially those who like a cushier feel.
Stomach — I thought this pillow worked fairly well for stomach sleeping, because it does compress down and leans a little softer than true medium. However, I believe the Soft density would work even better for these folks.
Under the Arm — The plush down in this pillow makes it soft and huggable, so I think it works well in this position.
Between the Legs — I also think this pillow works well for putting in between the legs, although I might opt for the Soft density to ensure it’s not so fluffy that it causes your hips to be misaligned. The down works nicely to provide some pressure relief on the legs, though.
A quick note on sleeping positions: Boll & Branch also recommends the Soft density for stomach sleepers, the Medium density for back sleepers, and the Firm density for side sleepers.

Now let’s take a closer look at what the Boll & Branch Down pillow is made of.
Cover: This pillow has a 100 percent long-staple, organic cotton cover.
Fill: The inside of each pillow is divided into three chambers and the fill varies depending on the pillow density. The Soft pillow is filled with down in all three chambers, while the Medium and Firm density pillows have a middle layer filled with a mix of feathers and down for support, with the outer layers just filled with down. All the down used in these pillows is American, cruelty-free down and meets the International Down Standard. It’s also triple-washed.
This pillow comes in a standard and king size.
Is the Boll & Branch Down Pillow Good for Hot Sleepers?
If you sleep hot, it is worth considering if your pillow helps keep you cool or makes you even hotter. I think the Boll & Branch Down Chamber pillow is a decent pillow for hot sleepers, as it is very breathable. Made with breathable, all-natural materials, this pillow should allow for lots of airflow and prevent heat from being trapped.
However, I wouldn’t say this pillow is noticeably cooling or cool to the touch. For more cooling options, check out our best cooling pillows. Round out your cooling bedding with some of our favorite cooling sheets, too!

I think the Boll & Branch Down Chamber pillow is a great option for anyone looking for an ultra-plush, cloud-like pillow. With three different densities, I think this pillow can work for all three sleeping positions to provide that luxurious hotel pillow experience. The Medium density that I tried works really well for back sleeping, as it provides enough support to prevent neck pain but still feels plush and comfy.
The materials used in this pillow are very high quality, including American down clusters and a 100 percent cotton shell. These are all-natural materials and you can rest easy knowing the down is responsibly sourced.
I also appreciate that this pillow is machine washable, as that will ensure your pillow stays clean and free from allergens, as much as possible.
