Our Certified Sleep Science Coaches have reviewed more than 300 mattresses in our lab, testing each one on its materials, comfort, cooling, support, and other categories.
We’ve recently re-reviewed our top mattress picks for couples to ensure we only feature beds that scored highly in the categories of support and cooling. We’ve also added extra insight from our testers on other factors that may matter to couples, like motion isolation and edge support.
Buying the best mattress for couples can be quite the task. Not only are you looking for a mattress that’s going to be best for your sleeping position, pain relief, and weight — you also want to find one that fits your partner’s needs.
For instance, If your main goal is spreading out on the mattress, find one with strong edge support. Many of the mattresses on this list also include some sort of cooling technology, which is important for hot sleepers who don’t want the added body heat in their bed to get in the way of a good night’s rest. And our firmer mattresses are better for sex, since couples will be able to move around more easily on top of them. Finally, one of the most important considerations for couples is motion transfer. Here’s what Sleepopolis Chief Medical Adviser Dr. Raj Dasgupta has to say about this topic:
“Motion transfer refers to how movement on one side of a mattress affects the other side. A mattress with good motion isolation offers undisturbed sleep and indicates material quality, construction, and overall comfort. Considering motion isolation is crucial, especially for shared beds or sensitivity to movement.”
No matter what your deal-breaker is when sleeping with a partner, Sleepopolis has the mattress to fit your specific needs. After all, we’ve already helped 12,544 people find a mattress in 2024 alone. I’ve also included a wide price range of mattresses on this list, with the average cost being $1,956 for a queen size before discounts.
What I Look For In The Best Mattresses For Couples
Motion Isolation
When considering the best mattress for you and your partner, it’s important to think about motion isolation, which is the degree to which you can feel other people or animals moving on the bed when you’re in it. I know you want to sleep comfortably throughout the evening without feeling your partner move, so I tested the motion isolation properties of every mattress on this list with a variety of tests: using a ball drop and seismograph machine, seeing if a glass of red wine would tip when I moved around the bed, and lying on each mattress with a colleague to see what kind of movement I could feel.
Support and Firmness
When thinking about the best mattress for couples, it’s important that both people have enough support and can agree on the firmness of the mattress. Because of this, I’ve tested the firmness and supportive nature of every mattress on this list, so you can be sure both you and your partner have enough support throughout the night. To do this I rank each mattress on our firmness scale, which runs from 1–10, with 10 being the most firm, so you and your partner can decide on what firmness is best.
Size
It’s important to consider how much room you and your partner want in a bed, so I made sure to include the sizes and prices of each size of mattress in this list. Some couples might be fine on a queen, while others may want something closer to a king if they want more room to move around.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

This is a hybrid mattress made with layers of foam and coils zoned for support. The Luxe includes a Tencel cover and gel foam pillow top layer.
Firmness
We rated this mattress a 6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. This means it’s a true medium-firm mattress.
Ideal for hot sleepers who tend to overheat at night.
Pros of the Helix Dusk Luxe
The responsiveness of the mattress not only makes the Helix Dusk Luxe a good mattress for sex — it’s also good for combination sleepers who need to change sleeping positions at night.
The Helix Dusk Luxe, for all of its enhanced features, comes at a spectacular value (especially with Helix’s frequent sales and discounts).
This mattress includes a comfort layer made of memory plus foam. This allows the mattress to contour to the sleeper’s body and provide additional pressure relief.
Cons of the Helix Dusk Luxe
This mattress isn’t firm enough for strict stomach sleepers, but they may enjoy the firmer Helix Dawn mattress.
Heavy sleepers (those over 250 pounds) likely won’t recieve enough support from this mattress and may sleep better on the Helix Plus mattress.

The Helix Dusk Luxe mattress has a medium-firm feel that is perfect for back sleepers. Also, this mattress offers great contouring that doesn’t make you feel like you’re “stuck in” bed, which is great news for combination sleepers. Learn more in our video review of all the Helix Luxe mattresses.
What our tester says:
“Overall, I found the Helix Dusk to be quite cooling, with the Luxe model sleeping slightly cooler. The Tencel cover on the Luxe adds additional temperature regulation. The gel foam and latex foam also add cooling.” – Logan Block, former content director
Expert Opinion
The Helix Dusk is one of Helix’s most popular beds and comes in two versions: the Standard and the Luxe. But if you have the means, I recommend opting for the Luxe model, as it boasts some impressive extra features like a cooling cover and enhanced lumbar support. Both options feature plush memory foam and pocketed coils, which create a combination of pressure relief and support. With a firmness level of 6.5 out of 10 and a true medium-firm feel, the Dusk Luxe should be a good fit for most back and side sleepers with back pain, as the cushioning will help prevent stiffness around these joints.
Why is this mattress great for couples? For one, the coils in the Dusk Luxe’s hybrid construction give it a good amount of bounce, which makes it one of the best mattresses for sex. Couples should be able to switch positions and move around with ease. They should also enjoy how the mattress performed in cooling and edge support, which I’ll get into in a bit. They can see if the bed is right for them during a 100-night trial, in addition to enjoying a 10-year warranty.
How Did the Helix Dusk Luxe Mattress Perform for Motion Isolation?
Motion transfer refers to how well a mattress is able to absorb movement. This is an important factor to consider if you’re sharing a bed with a partner. When a mattress has low motion transfer, you’re unlikely to be disturbed by any movement on the other side of the bed. I test motion transfer by conducting a seismometer test, which gives me an idea of how the mattress absorbs motion. First, I drop a steel ball from three different heights onto the surface of the mattress. The seismometer then measures the vibrations.
The Helix Dusk had moderate motion isolation, as you can see here. Hybrid mattresses are pretty bouncy, so they absorb less motion than an all-foam mattress. These weren’t the worst results by any means, but the mediocre motion isolation is something couples should keep in mind.
How the Helix Dusk Luxe Performed In Testing
Support 5/5
I find that all of the Luxe models from Helix tend to have a lot of support, due to the strength of their coils. I felt very lifted when lying down on the Helix Dusk Luxe.
Cooling 4.5/5
The bed has a Tencel cover, allowing for plenty of breathability. This can help couples feel cooler throughout the night, especially since two bodies create more heat than one.
Edge Support 4/5
While sitting and lying towards the edge of the mattress, I found it has an incredibly strong perimeter. Partners should be able to make greater use of the mattress surface and sleep towards the edge of the bed, enhancing overall comfort.
Pressure Relief 4/5
I didn’t see a whole lot of red, yellow, or orange on the pressure map for the Helix Dusk Luxe, which tells me that it should effectively relieve pressure on your body.

Back Sleeping
This mattress is ideal for back sleepers of all weights.
Stomach Sleeping
It’s also a nice option for lightweight and average weight stomach sleepers.
Pros of the Saatva
With three firmness options, most sleepers should find a Saatva model that works for them. We recommend that side sleepers opt for the Plush Soft, back sleepers go for the Luxury Firm, and stomach sleepers choose the Firm.
The responsive nature of the Saatva Classic makes it an especially helpful mattress for combination sleepers who need to switch positions throughout the night. This comes from the support layer in the mattress, which includes individually wrapped coils that conform to your body, providing bounce and support.
Heavier sleepers should enjoy this mattress because of the study materials used to make it. Complete with five different layers, the Saatva Classic is designed around durability.
Cons of the Saatva
If you’re looking for lots of sinkage or amazing motion isolation, you’re better off with one of the best memory foam mattresses.
None of the Saatva Classic models will likely be supportive enough for heavy stomach sleepers. For these folks, we recommend the Saatva HD.

The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It’s a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs. The white glove delivery Saatva provides is an added perk and will save you the headache of getting rid of your old mattress (they take it away for free!). For more information, watch our video review.
Expert Opinion
The Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress that comes in three different firmness options (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm) and two different heights (11.5-inch and 14.5-inch). This allows shoppers to truly find the best fit for them. Being an innerspring mattress, the Saatva has plenty of support to keep the spine in a neutral alignment, which is great for back sleepers and heavier sleepers who want a mattress that stays durable for longer. The sturdy materials also provide a lot of bounce, which is great for sex. Couples should be able to move around on the Saatva’s coils throughout the night, whether they’re engaging in amorous activities or simply switching sleeping positions. They also have a 365-night trial to test out the bed, plus a lifetime warranty.

How the Saatva Classic Mattress Performed In Testing
Support 5/5
The Saatva is made with very supportive materials, along with a quilted Euro pillow top. The quilted top helps alleviate pressure from the mattress, while the support system below keeps the sleeper’s spine in a neutral alignment. When I laid down on the bed, I got a significant lift and could feel my spine staying neutrally aligned.
Cooling 4.5/5
The Saatva includes two coiled sections that help the mattress stay cool throughout the night, especially when there are two sleepers in the bed. When I used a thermal gun to measure its temperature increase after 5 minutes of me lying down, it only rose by about 9 degrees. This indicates good cooling capabilities.
Edge Support 5/5
The Saatva’s perimeter is made with reinforced edge support that combines coil and poly foam, ensuring that one sleeper won’t fall off the bed in the middle of the night. When I sat and laid on the edge of the mattress, I felt well supported, with very little collapse in the layers.
Pressure Relief 4.5/5
While the Saatva isn’t the most contouring mattress around, I also didn’t feel any extra pressure on my body while lying on it. When I ran the mattress through our pressure map test — which uses color-coded imaging to show pressure buildup — the graphic was mostly blue, indicating low pressure.
How Did the Saatva Classic Mattress Perform for Motion Isolation?
The Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress, which means that it has high motion transfer. While this may cause you to wake up more frequently from your partner’s movements, it may also indicate better responsiveness, which can be helpful for sex or combination sleepers who need to move around a lot. Nichole Mondshein, our lead reviewer, said that “If you sleep with a partner or pet, you may feel their movements at night if you’re not a sound sleeper.”
I tested the motion isolation by dropping a ball from various heights and testing the motion transfer using a seismograph machine. As you can see, the motion transfer was quite high — something to keep in mind if you’re an especially light sleeper.

WinkBed Plus – Best Mattress for Stomach-Sleeping Couples
Sleepopolis Score
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.
This is a hybrid mattress, meaning it combines soft foams and sturdy coils for a balance of comfort and support.
Firmness
We rated the WinkBed Plus a 7.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale. Since it’s designed for heavyweight sleepers, it’s appropriate that this mattress has a firmer feel.
Price
$1,349–$2,199 (before any discounts)
Size

Heavy Sleepers
This mattress was designed for them, and should give them the support they need.
Back Sleepers
Specifically average-weight and heavyweight back sleepers will find plenty of support.
Couples
The WinkBed Plus isolates motion quite well, especially for a responsive hybrid mattress.
Pros of the WinkBed Plus
Back sleepers should enjoy the WinkBed Plus because of its extra-firm feel. This helps keep the spine supported in a neutral position throughout the night.
The hybrid quality of this mattress makes it good for combination sleepers. They should be able to move around easily on top of the WinkBed Plus without feeling “stuck” in the mattress.
Sleepers with shoulder pain should feel extra-comfortable on this mattress because of its pressure-relieving capabilities. This is particularly true for those that sleep on their back or stomach for the majority of the night.
Cons of the WinkBed Plus
This mattress is most likely too firm for the majority of side sleepers. Side sleepers need extra pressure relief for their hips and shoulders, which the WinkBed Plus might not provide because of its firm feel. If you prefer to sleep on your side, check out our best mattresses for side sleepers instead.
The WinkBed Plus is a firm, hybrid mattress designed specifically to accommodate heavyweight sleepers. Through our testing, we found it works best for back sleepers, particularly those over 250 pounds. It also does a good job of isolating motion, which will likely appeal to you if you sleep with a partner. If you want to learn more about the WinkBed Plus, check out our video review.
Expert Opinion
The WinkBed Plus mattress is a version of the WinkBed made specifically for individuals over 250 pounds. Its hybrid design maximizes pressure relief while providing added comfort to the sleeper. I made sure this was accurate by having a heavier sleeper test the WinkBed Plus. For them, the mattress mattress felt comfortable and scored a 7.5 on our firmness scale. However, for lightweight sleepers, the WinkBed Plus scores closer to an 8 on the firmness scale, which might be too firm for some side sleepers who prefer a softer mattress.
Because the WinkBed Plus was built with sturdier materials, I also found it to be a good fit for stomach sleepers and, by extension, stomach-sleeping couples. These folks put more pressure on the layers of a mattress, and as a result, tend to need more firmness and support than back sleepers and side sleepers. This helps prevent their hips from bowing too far into the mattress and throwing their spine out of alignment. With its tall coils, the WinkBed Plus should keep this from happening. I felt very comfortable while resting in the stomach-sleeping position. Also, the mattress comes with a 120-night trial period and lifetime warranty.

How the WinkBed Plus Mattress Performed In Testing
Support 5/5
Thanks to its reinforced material, the WinkBed Plus is a highly supportive mattress. I never felt like I was sinking too far into its layers.
Cooling 4.5/5
The hybrid construction of the WinkBed Plus should help you sleep cool. This is especially important when there’s double the body heat in the bed. This mattress is also constructed with a Tencel cover that encourages breathability throughout the night.
Edge Support 5/5
With an Extra-Edge Support System included, the WinkBed Plus has strong edge support, which is important for couples who want to spread out on the mattress without feeling the edges sag underneath them.
Pressure Relief 4.5/5
Most sleepers shouldn’t experience too much pressure buildup on the WinkBed Plus. On our pressure map, there was almost no pressure for average weight sleepers in any of the sleeping positions. However, I did see some high pressure for heavy stomach sleepers, so that’s something to consider if you fall into that group.
How Did the WinkBed Plus Mattress Perform for Motion Isolation?
Motion isolation is the amount of motion the bed absorbs, and is important for couples to consider because it can affect the amount of movement you feel when laying in the bed. Higher motion isolation capacity is generally preferred by couples sharing a bed, but some people prefer a more bouncy and responsive feel, so this is really up to you and your partner’s preferences.
To test motion isolation, I drop a ball from different heights and measure the motion transfer using a seismograph machine. When testing the WinkBed Plus, former editor Bridget Chapman said “The WinkBed Plus has relatively low motion transfer and could be a nice choice for anyone sleeping with a partner.” I don’t think couples — even heavier ones — will feel each other tossing or turning during the night.

Hip Pain
The Premier should provide plenty of pressure relief for side and back sleepers with hip pain.
Pros of the Nectar Premier
On our mattress firmness scale, we rated the Nectar Premier a 6 out of 10, which places it in the category of soft. So you’ll get that slow-moving feel that people associate with memory foam.
We think the Nectar Premier is also a good match for side sleepers, who should get all the contouring they need at the shoulders and hips, where they put the most pressure.

The Nectar Premier is a luxurious all-foam mattress equipped with quality materials. A moisture-wicking cover and gel-infused comfort layer create a cooling, thermoregulating mattress for hot sleepers. Perhaps its strongest attribute is its next-level pressure relief. Six inches of foam work to contour sensitive areas, but the high-density foam at the bottom of the bed provides plenty of support. Watch our video review to learn more.
What our tester says:
“My favorite thing about the Nectar Premier is its great pressure relief. This medium-soft mattress is a great fit for side sleepers looking for plush comfort. It might also be a nice fit for sleepers who deal with shoulder pain.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
Expert Opinion
The Nectar Premier is the luxury upgrade of the original all-foam Nectar, meaning that it has additional touches such as thicker foam, an overall softer feel, and a cooler-sleeping cover. But despite the additions, it still strikes an optimal balance of comfort and support that suits back sleepers. Like the brand’s flagship mattress, there’s soft memory foam up top for contouring at the lumbar region and high-density poly foam at the bottom for spinal support. If you’re a couple who shares a bed, both of you should feel comfortable while sleeping on your back. You can also sleep soundly knowing that the mattress is backed by a 365-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty.

How the Nectar Premier Mattress Performed In Testing
Support 4.5/5
For a foam mattress, I felt very supported on the Nectar Premier. Even though I got a lot of contouring and softness from its layers, I never felt like I was sinking too far into the bed.
Cooling 4.5/5
While the Nectar Premier doesn’t sleep as cool as many hybrid and innerspring mattresses out there, it still keeps a fairly low temperature for a memory foam bed (its temperature only rose 4.3 degrees during our thermal gun test). It could be a good pick for hot sleepers who are after a softer feel.
Edge Support 4/5
Foam mattresses usually don’t have exceptional edge support, and I did notice a bit of sagging when I sat on the corner of the Nectar Premier. This might be an issue for couples who prefer to spread out and use the entire surface of the mattress, although a lot of sleepers should be fine.
Pressure Relief 4.5/5
When trying out the Nectar Premier myself, I put it through our pressure map test, which uses a specialized mat that I roll across the bed. I lie down on the mat, and it uses thermal imaging to create a color-coded “map” of my body. Blue means no pressure, green means light pressure, yellow means moderate pressure, orange means high pressure, and red means very high pressure. In the back-sleeping position, the map was almost completely blue, which is what you want to see if you’re a back sleeper.
How Did the Nectar Premier Mattress Perform for Motion Isolation?
When lead reviewer Nichole Mondshein tested the motion transfer of the Nectar Premier, she said “I think the Nectar Premier is a solid choice for anyone who sleeps with a restless partner or pet” based on the results, which you can see to the right.
These results show low motion transfer, indicating that this is a good mattress for couples who are looking for a bed where they won’t feel too much movement.

Couples
This mattress is a good choice for couples due to its low motion transfer, cooling, and responsiveness.
Pros of the Nolah
Back sleepers should find the blend of comfort and support they need when sleeping on the Nolah Original
The cushiony feel of the Nolah is a good fit for sleepers who may suffer from joint pain or arthritis. The foam in this mattress should help to relieve the pressure around these sleepers’ joints.
The Tencel cover included on the Nolah mattress is created using recycled materials, which is particularly important for eco-friendly shoppers.
Cons of the Nolah
This mattress is likely not supportive or durable enough for heavy folks (those weighing over 250 pounds). We recommend one of our best mattresses for heavy people.

The Nolah Original 10″ mattress is created with Nolah’s proprietary AirFoam. This material mimics the body contouring provided by memory foam, but without the heat trapping. The Tencel cover aids with additional cooling. With soft foams and solid support, this mattress is best for back and side sleepers. Learn more in our video review.
What our tester says:
Overall, I think this mattress could be a good pick for couples. Looking at the motion transfer results, it’s a safe bet that you won’t be disturbed by your partner tossing and turning at night. I would suggest couples purchase a queen-size mattress or larger, since the edge support on this mattress is just okay and it may be more difficult to comfortably sleep on the full surface of the bed.” – Madison Schaper, former staff writer
Expert Opinion
The Nolah is created with a proprietary material called Nolah Airfoam, which is essentially a more breathable version of traditional memory foam. When I laid down on the bed’s surface, I found that it contoured my body without causing me to overheat. It also had a slow response to pressure when I was in the side-sleeping position, allowing me to sink into the bed without putting pressure on my hips or shoulders. So I think it’s an excellent choice for side-sleeping couples. At the same time, there’s a little bit of bounce to the Nolah’s foams, so it should be responsive enough for sex (also a plus for couples). The Nolah comes backed by a lifetime warranty, as well as a 120-night trial.

I found that the Airfoam was doing its job, and that the Nolah really did sleep cooler than most mattresses made from foam. It also has a Tencel cover — a material derived from eucalyptus pulp that also helps with temperature regulation.
Edge Support 4/5
For an all-foam mattress, I felt that the Nolah had pretty average edge support. I think most couples should be fine, but if you and your partner really like to spread out and use the whole surface of the bed, you may want to opt for a hybrid or an innerspring.
Pressure Relief 5/5
I experienced deep pressure relief on the Nolah, with the pressure map almost entirely blue in every sleeping position.
How Did the Nolah Mattress Perform for Motion Isolation?
Motion transfer refers to how well a mattress is able to absorb movement. This is an important factor to consider if you’re sharing a bed with a partner. When a mattress has low motion transfer, you’re unlikely to be disturbed by any movement on the other side of the bed. I test motion transfer by conducting a seismometer test, which gives me an idea of how the mattress absorbs motion.
The test for Nolah’s motion isolation capacity revealed that it has pretty good motion isolation, which couples who sleep next to restless partners or do not want to feel their partner’s movements, may really like.

Side Sleepers
The Sedona Elite is a great mattress for side sleepers. It’s a soft mattress that will allow them to sink in and provide pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.
Hip Pain
The Sedona Elite should be comfy for anyone who suffers from hip or shoulder pain. It should cushion their sensitive pressure points.
Couples
The Sedona Elite has low motion transfer, which means that you’re unlikely to feel your partner’s movements on your side of the bed.
Pros of the Sedona Elite
The multiple layers of foam in this mattress are great for sleepers who really want to “sink in” to their mattress. The extra-soft feel and plush layers give a luxurious feel to the Sedona.
Sleepers with shoulder pain should consider this model because of its pressure relief. If you are a side sleeper with shoulder pain, this mattress will specifically help alleviate pressure around the shoulders and hips, where most side sleepers put the majority of their weight.
Some back sleepers should be comfortable on the Sedona Elite, as long as they prefer a softer feel.
Cons of the Sedona Elite
This is an expensive option, and not a great choice for shoppers on a budget.
Heavier sleepers may want to go for mattress that gives them more support than the Sedona can offer with its soft feel. Some heavy sleepers might feel like they’re going to fall through the Sedona, which does not create a relaxing sleeping experience. Instead, opt for one of the mattress on our roundup of the best mattresses for heavy people.

The Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite is a hybrid bed with excellent motion isolation, making it perfect for couples. The coils keep the bed cool and supportive while the foam layer makes it comfortable and pressure relieving, which may be helpful for people with hip and shoulder pain. Learn more in our video review.
What our tester says:
“I consider this a great selection for side sleepers. The foam layers provide a soft, almost quilted top portion, where you sink into the bed a little bit, but don’t get stuck.” – Logan Block, Sleepopolis former content director
Expert Opinion
The Brooklyn Bedding Sedona is a hybrid mattress with both memory foam layers and individually wrapped coils in the construction. The Sedona has a firmness rating of 5.5 from our Sleepopolis testers, which is below the industry standard of 6.5 for a medium-firm mattress. This makes the Sedona extra-soft, especially with the foam layers at the top that create a plush feel. It allows sleepers to really “sink in” to the bed at night, which helps provide pressure relief around the hips and shoulders. This is especially great for side sleepers, who put the majority of their weight into their shoulders while sleeping. Also, the motion isolation present in this mattress is low, which is especially surprising for a mattress with coils. This makes the Sedona a great mattress for couples, since the slow-response foam layers and the Ascension X coils help keep movement from one partner isolated from the other during the night (more on that in the below section). Finally, the mattress comes with a 120-night trial period and 10-year warranty.
How the Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite Performed In Testing
Support 3.5/5
I did feel like I was sinking into the mattress a bit on the Sedona. This is common with softer mattresses, so if support is especially important to you, you may want to seek out a bed that’s at least medium firm.
Cooling 5/5
The gel memory foam in the comfort layer of this mattress also helps keep couples cool throughout the night, which can be hard when there’s two people in one bed. Adding to this, the Sedona includes coils at its base, which helps air pass through easily so the mattress stays breathable.
Edge Support 4/5
I found the edge support on the Sedona Elite to be decent — not as weak as some all-foam beds I’ve tested, but not as strong as some of the innersprings I’ve tested, either.
Pressure Relief 5/5
On the pressure map, which shows high pressure in red and low pressure in blue, the Sedona Elite is entirely blue when it comes to back sleeping. This is important for those with back pain. The mattress cradled my body when I laid on it, relieving pressure from the lumbar region.
How Did the Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Mattress Perform for Motion Isolation?
Motion isolation is the amount of motion the bed absorbs, and is important for couples to consider because it can affect the amount of movement you feel when lying in the bed. I test this by dropping a ball from various heights and measuring the mount if motion transfer using a seismograph machine.
The Brooklyn Bedding Sedona mattress proved to be fairly effective at isolating motion. Our tester Logan Block reported that “the slow-response foam layers do a great job of isolating movement, making this a good pick for couples and restless sleepers.”

What Customers Say
Reviews on the Brooklyn Bedding website talk about how cooling this mattress felt to the majority of sleepers, most likely due to the cooling technology present in this model. Customers also state that the installation of the mattress was quick and easy, which is pleasantly surprising for a bed-in-a-box mattress.

The Bear Star Hybrid is a softer hybrid mattress with memory foam and innerspring coils. It offers pressure relief, contouring, and solid support for many sleeper types, but especially back, side, and combination sleepers. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“After testing out the Bear Star, I found it to be really cozy. I loved how plush the surface of the mattress felt as I was lying on it, but I still felt super supported. Lying on my back and my side, I felt comfortable and would definitely sleep on this at night in my own home.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer
Expert Opinion
The Bear Star Hybrid is one of the more efficient hybrid beds available today. It was originally designed for athletes struggling with chronic back and joint pain due to fitness training, but I also found it to be an excellent choice for couples. The coil and high-density foam foundation help create a healthy bounce on the Bear’s surface, making sex easier. However, it’s well-balanced with multiple upper comfort and cushioning foam layers designed to offer deep pressure relief and contouring. Read on to see how the mattress performed in several other couples-centric categories such as cooling and edge support. And if you want to try the bed for yourself, Bear offers a 120-night trial period and lifetime warranty.

How the Bear Star Hybrid Comfort Mattress Performed In Testing
Support 4/5
The Bear Star Hybrid has a durable and supportive build and design, resulting in strong orthopedic support for sleepers when resting on it. When I laid down on the bed’s surface, I felt like my spine was in a neutral alignment.
Cooling 4.5/5
The Bear Star Hybrid has a moisture-wicking cover top, copper-infused memory foam, and a massive innerspring layer for airflow, all of which help regulate temperature effectively. Hot sleepers or couples sharing sleep-disruptive body heat on this bed should experience quality cooling.
Edge Support 4.5/5
I found durable edges and consistent, responsive support across the entirety of the Bear Star’s sleeping surface. Couples sharing the bed should experience the same level of comfort on the edges as they would in the center, with minimal sagging and sinkage.
Pressure Relief 4.5/5
I found little inflammation build-up when testing out the Bear Star Hybrid. Stomach sleepers may find the mattress a bit too soft, but overall, the Bear Star demonstrated quality relief for back and joint pain during our pressure map test.
How Did the Bear Star Hybrid Comfort Mattress Perform for Motion Isolation?
The Bear Star Hybrid did pretty well with isolating motion when put to the seismometer test, scoring a 4 out of 5 for the category. The upper foam layer and dense foam foundation helped counter much of the disruptive bounce from the bed’s innerspring layer. I think most couples should be happy with the level of motion isolation, with one tester explaining their findings. To quote our full review, “These are pretty solid results, which tells me you shouldn’t be too bothered by nighttime movements on the Bear Star Hybrid. The memory foam comfort layer is doing a lot of the work here, dampening motion before it’s able to quake throughout the structure.”

Pros of the Titan Plus
The Titan Plus comes with a quilted top cover made of polyester, which makes the top of the mattress a little cozier for sleepers. This cover is combined with an inch of gel memory, so sleepers should immediately feel the comforting effect of this mattress when lying down.
Combination sleepers should enjoy this mattress because of its firmness, which helps them move around freely in order to switch positions throughout the night.
The coils present in the construction of the Titan Plus help to lift sleeper’s hips and align them with their shoulders. This is important for those suffering from hip pain, as they need more pressure relief from their mattress.
Cons of the Titan Plus
Lightweight sleepers probably won’t get any pressure relief or contouring, so they might be better off with one of the best mattresses for lightweight sleepers.
Likewise, strict side sleepers will most likely not receive the pressure relief they need from the Titan Plus, especially around their hips and shoulders, where they need a softer pressure beneath them that cannot be found with this firm mattress. If this sounds like you, opt for one of the mattress in our best mattresses for side sleepers instead.

The Titan Plus mattress is a durable mattress made with heavy sleepers in mind. It’s firm and features heavy-duty coils and Titanflex foam that makes it bouncy and easy to move around on. We think that heavy back sleepers and stomach sleepers should be especially comfortable. For more information on the Titan Plus, check out our video review.
Expert Opinion
Brooklyn Bedding designed their luxury hybrid Titan Plus mattress specifically for heavy sleepers over 250 pounds. That means it should have an exceptionally high level of support. But I made sure to have a heavier sleeper test it so I could get accurate results. He found that it kept him properly elevated, even when he was on his stomach. His hips were lifted up and in line with his shoulders, helping keep his spine in a neutral alignment. He also found the mattress to be especially firm. When I combined his firmness score with the ratings of several other Sleepopolis testers, the bed came in at an average of 7.5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale. Overall, I think it’s a good choice for heavy couples, especially if they sleep on their back or their stomach. Even couples where one partner is heavy and the other is of average weight should be happy on the Titan Plus, as long as they prefer a firmer mattress. You and your partner can try out the mattress yourselves during a 120-night trial period. The bed also comes with a 10-year warranty.

How the Titan Plus Mattress Performed In Testing
Support 5/5
I wasn’t surprised to see that the Titan Plus is one of the most supportive beds I’ve ever tested, given its more durable construction. I got a huge lift from its coils and felt like my spine was neutrally aligned.
Cooling 4.5/5
The Titan Plus has a lot of space between its coils, which helps promote airflow. When I measured the temperature increase with a thermal gun after 5 minutes of me lying on the mattress, it rose by less than 6 degrees. This indicates excellent cooling capabilities, so I think this bed should be comfortable for hot sleepers.
Edge Support 4.5/5
The Titan Plus has strong edge support, so both couples and heavier sleepers can turn over and sleep close to the edge of the mattress without fear of sinkage or sagging. I actually measured the bed’s sinkage while both sitting and lying on the edge, and the layers collapsed less than 2 inches.
Pressure Relief 4/5
While I was in the back-sleeping position, the pressure map’s graphic was almost entirely blue. I did see some pressure buildup at the shoulder while side sleeping, but since I don’t think the mattress is the best fit for this sleeping position anyway, I still gave it a 4 out of 5 on pressure relief.
How Did the Titan Plus Mattress Perform for Motion Isolation?
Motion isolation, which is the degree to which a mattress absorbs motion, is important to consider when sleeping next to a partner because you may not want to be disturbed by their movements. However, if you prefer a bed that is responsive and bouncy, then lower motion isolation may be better for you.
I test this by dropping a ball from various heights and measuring the motion transfer with a seismograph machine. As you can see, there was not great motion isolation measured in the Titan Plus.

Expert Opinion
If you and your partner are wanting to sleep like royalty, purchasing a Leesa Sapira Chill is certainly a step in the right direction. This luxury mattress is a hybrid option with three different firmnesses to choose from: Plush, Medium Firm, and Firm. During testing, I rated the Medium Firm a 6 out of 10. Folks of all sleeping positions and body types should find that one of the three options works well for them. What’s so special about the Leesa Sapira Chill is its luxurious and high-quality materials, from its cover stitched with cooling fibers to its gel-infused memory foam layer and thick base layer of individually pocketed coils. How the Leesa Sapira Chill Mattress Performed In Testing
Support 4.5/5
I got a nice lift from the springs of the Leesa Sapira Chill and felt well supported. Sleepers should have no trouble maintaining a neutral spinal alignment.
Cooling 4.5/5
True to its name, the Leesa Sapira Chill is a very cooling mattress. The springs allow plenty of air to flow through the construction, it has a cool-to-the-touch cover, and there are even cooling fibers in the top layer meant to keep your skin at 88 degrees. I don’t think this bed will have any trouble cooling down two bodies at once.
Edge Support 4.5/5
The Leesa Sapira Chill has strong edge support, which is an indicator of durability and allows couples to spread out and use the entire surface of the mattress. When sitting and lying near the perimeter, I felt well-supported.
Pressure Relief 5/5
Sleepers suffering from back pain should find that the Leesa Sapira Chill helps alleviate that pain. In the pressure map test, back sleeping showed almost no pressure, lighting up with blue and only a touch of green.
How Did the Leesa Sapira Chill Mattress Perform for Motion Isolation?
I test for motion isolation, which is the amount of movement you can feel across the bed, by dropping a ball from various heights and measuring the transfer of motion with a seismograph machine. Motion isolation is important to consider when sleeping next to a partner because you may not want to be disturbed by their movements. However, you may also prefer a bed that is responsive and bouncy — properties that make it good for sex.
As a hybrid mattress, the Leesa Sapira Chill does have a little bit of bounce and motion transfer from the springs, but overall, I was impressed with its ability to isolate movement. You’re unlikely to feel your partner’s movements at night unless you’re a very light sleeper.

Similar to the Birch Natural, the Birch Luxe Natural blends Talalay latex foam with sturdy coils that are zoned for support. We think it’s a good fit for back sleepers and stomach sleepers who enjoy a firmer bed. Its luxury upgrades include a softer cover with organic cotton and cashmere, plus the mattress has earned multiple certifications for safe production and materials. Expert Opinion
The Birch Luxe is an eco-friendly mattress created by Helix Sleep. It combines layers of wool and organic cashmere, bringing breathability and durability together in one mattress. With a 7 on the firmness scale, which is based on the opinions of myself and several other Sleepopolis mattress testers, the Birch Luxe is slightly firmer than the industry standard for medium firm. The majority of this firmness comes from the steel coils and latex used in the construction, keeping the mattress supported and durable for longer. Most importantly, the Birch Luxe uses individually wrapped coils in its construction to increase airflow in the mattress, allowing for couples to sleep cooler throughout the night.

How the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress Performed In Testing
Support 4/5
I found this to be a fairly supportive mattress, and got a nice lift from the latex foam and springs when lying down on it.
Cooling 5/5
An added bonus of latex is that it sleeps naturally cool. When combined with the airflow of the innerspring coils, the Birch Luxe Natural is extremely cooling.
Edge Support 3.5/5
I thought the edge support of the Birch Luxe Natural was just average, which is something to consider if you and your partner like to spread out and use the whole mattress.
Pressure Relief 4/5
The pressure map was almost entirely blue while I slept on my stomach, but showed some pressure while I was side sleeping. That said, I don’t really recommend this bed for that sleeping position, so I still gave the Birch Luxe Natural a decent score for pressure relief.
How Did the Birch Natural Luxe Mattress Perform for Motion Isolation?
For an innerspring bed, the Birch Luxe has a relatively good score on the motion transfer test, which is based on how much motion is transferred from one end of the bed to the other when a 10-pound steel ball is dropped on the mattress.
The natural Talalay latex and coils in the Birch Luxe also allow it to be responsive and bouncy, which makes it a great mattress for sex, since couples can move around easily on top of the mattress.

When deciding between an all-foam, innerspring, hybrid, or latex mattress, there’s never going to be one bed that’s perfect for every single couple out there. People tend to have different sleeping positions, preferences, and lifestyles, and that only gets multiplied when there are two people involved instead of one. But here are some positives and negatives about each mattress type and how they relate to couples.
All-Foam and Memory Foam
As the name implies, all-foam mattresses are constructed entirely of foam without any springs or coils in their construction. One popular material for all foam mattresses is memory foam, which is a hugging, slow-moving foam that “remembers” the shape of your body or position even after you move. These are generally softer, but some beds do offer a firmer option for their all-foam mattresses.
All-foam beds tend to be great at isolating motion, which bodes well for couples where at least one partner is easily disturbed at night. The downside to all-foam mattresses is that they can easily trap heat. And when you’re sleeping two people to a bed instead of one, the body heat gets doubled.
Innerspring
Innerspring mattresses, unlike foam beds, are made of coils — or springs — and topped with a smaller layer of foam for comfort. These beds are generally very supportive and offer excellent cooling because their coil construction makes them uniquely breathable. These beds can be a bit bouncy for couples, making them great at responsiveness and good for sex, but not great at motion transfer, so you may feel your partner moving throughout the night.
Hybrid
Hybrid mattresses are usually made from a combination of springs at the bottom and foam (often several layers) up to. These beds combine the appeals of both all-foam and innerspring mattresses, making them cool, comfortable, and supportive. They’re a great option for couples, as they tend to have good motion isolation, strong edge support, and great responsiveness. That said, we’ve found that they’re fairly expensive.
Latex
Latex mattresses are an excellent eco-friendly choice for a mattress, and may also help reduce exposure to allergens such as dust. Natural latex is made from tree sap, meaning that it’s better for the environment than man-made materials. It’s also naturally allergen-repellant. Latex is comfortable while providing necessary support, and its porous material makes it very breathable. Plus, it’s naturally responsive, so it allows for easy mobility during sex. However, latex can be very bouncy and doesn’t provide very good motion isolation. This is something to keep in mind if either you or your partner are a light sleeper.
Responsive for sex, great at isolating motion, good at cooling
Not as good at isolating motion as memory foam
How I Test the Best Mattresses for Couples
Firmness and Feel
Perhaps the most important factors in selecting a mattress for you and your significant other are the firmness and feel. We test our mattresses using a firmness scale that ranks mattresses from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most firm and 1 being the softest. The industry standard for medium firm is 6.5.
Different Types of Firmness
Adaptive
First, you can select a mattress designed with a universal and/or adaptive feel. These types of beds are usually in the medium-firmness range. They’re designed to provide an equal level of support and pressure relief regardless of body type, weight, and sleeping position.
Split
In this setup. you’ll have two separate mattresses side by side. It’s ideal if you and your partner have very different needs and find that a compromise in the middle just isn’t an option. For example, if one partner is very heavy and the other partner is very light, a split mattress may be a good choice.
Full Customization
While there aren’t many of these mattresses available yet, there is at least one really good option with Helix, a brand that allows couples to each customize their own side of the mattress. It also offers a line of six hybrid mattresses, each with a different level of firmness. This made the brand a strong contender when picking our best mattresses for couples.
Cooling
Two bodies radiate more heat than one, which is something you’ll want to keep in mind if you share your bed with someone else. Look for mattresses that have added cooling features, or try to find a bed with a construction that assists with temperature regulation. In general, innerspring mattresses and hybrid mattresses tend to be more cooling than memory foam mattresses, as their coils leave more room for air to flow through the bed.
To test a mattress’s cooling capabilities I use a device called a thermal gun. I just aim it at the mattress, and it uses thermal imaging to show me its temperature both before someone’s laid down on it and after they’ve laid on it for five minutes. If it heats up more than 15 degrees Fahrenheit, I consider the bed to have poor cooling capabilities. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling.
Motion Transfer
A mattress that has the ability to dissipate movement can be the difference between sleeping well and not sleeping at all. If you or your partner tend to be lighter sleepers, motion transfer is even more important. You’ll want something that’s good at isolating motion, rather than transferring it. Motion transfer refers to the movement that is detectable from one side of the bed to the other side. This is especially important for couples because it determines if your partner is going to be able to feel you tossing and turning at night.
In order to test motion isolation, our mattress testers drop a 10-pound steel ball from heights of 4, 8, and 12 inches. The movement of the ball across the mattress is measured by a seismometer. The bigger the lines on the chart, the bigger the disturbance from one side of the mattress to the other. This will determine if your partner will feel every movement you make during the night, or if they’ll only feel the big movements, like getting in and out of bed in the morning.
Innerspring mattresses have a higher motion transfer rate, but are better mattresses for sex because of their responsiveness. On the flip side, memory foam mattresses limit movements from couples and often create a hotter atmosphere in the bed because the foams trap body heat.
Responsiveness
Responsiveness in a mattress refers to how quickly and effectively it adjusts to the movements and pressure of the sleeper. The upside to a responsive mattress is that it makes the bed good for sex, as it allows couples to move around easily. The downside is that it sends a lot of movement rippling across the mattress, which could be an issue if either one of you wakes up easily.
To test responsiveness, I lie down on the bed and see how easy it is to move around and switch positions. If I’m able to do so with little difficulty, then it’s a responsive mattress. A responsive mattress is also good for combination sleepers who change sleeping positions at night.
Support and Spinal Alignment
A quality mattress should evenly support your body in a variety of sleeping positions, helping you maintain a neutral spinal alignment. This is especially critical for couples of different weights who sleep together on a full or queen mattress. If the heavier sleeper rolls towards the middle and creates a downward slope, the lighter sleeper may end up rolling into their partner. This can create additional motion transfer and interfere with the support and feel.
Edge Support
Beyond support for the purposes of sleeping, the mattress needs to be able to support the weight of two adults located in generally the same place. Selecting a mattress with robust materials and a good design along the edge of the bed, as well as in the center, will ensure that it’s capable of properly supporting the full weight, while still creating comfort, bounce, and response. To test a mattress’s edge support, I sit on the edge of the bed and see if I feel the layers buckling or collapsing beneath my weight. I then do the same while leaning over and tying our shoes. If the mattress stays sturdy with little give, then it probably has strong edge support.
Sleeping Positions
When testing our mattresses, I make sure to lie on every single one in various sleeping positions before I make my recommendations. While there are certainly exceptions, as a rule of thumb, side sleepers do best on softer mattresses, stomach sleepers tend to be comfortable on firmer mattresses, and back sleepers fare the best on medium-firm mattresses.
We make sure to test all of our mattresses with the consideration that everyone has a different body type. I also made sure to consider various body types when testing the best mattresses for couples. You may notice that some of our reviews mention that lighter-weight sleepers or heavier-weight sleepers fare better on a specific bed. I include this information so that you can find the perfect fit in terms of comfort, support, firmness, and pressure relief, regardless of body type.
If you and your partner have different body types, there are many options. Mattresses with customizable firmness allow you to adjust the firmness level to your personal settings, often through different settings or interchangeable layers. For couples with different body weights, this is very beneficial because it enables each partner to select the firmness and level of support that’s best for their sleep preferences.
Shipping and extra costs are important when buying a mattress for you and your partner. I looked into the extra or associated costs for all of the mattresses on this list to help you find exactly what you’re looking for while staying within your budget. For an extra cost, some mattress companies offer a white glove delivery service that hand delivers, lifts, sets up, and removes your old mattress. Some companies like Saatva even include this service with each mattress purchase. I also recommend looking into our list of the best Canadian mattresses if you’re shopping as a couple outside the United States.

FAQs
What type of mattress is good for couples?
You may have noticed that most of the mattresses on this list are hybrid models. While it’s entirely possible to find an all-foam model that works for couples (such as the Nolah), the weight of two bodies is going to need more support than many memory foam mattresses offer. So I recommend that couples start with hybrids when mattress-shopping.
Is memory foam good for two people?
While hybrid mattresses or innerspring mattresses tend to offer more support for couples, there are some memory foam beds out there that can work as well. One benefit the material has for couples is that it cuts down on motion transfer, so if you sleep with a partner, you’re less likely to feel each other’s movements at night.
What is edge support?
Edge support refers to how strong the perimeter of your mattress is. If a bed has good edge support, it means you can sleep near the edge of the mattress and still feel supported. Edge support is especially important when finding the best mattress for couples, as it gives them plenty of room to spread out.
What is the best mattress for intimacy?
The best mattress for sex is going to be one that’s responsive and allows you to easily move around and change positions. Hybrid and innerspring mattresses with lots of coils and bounce are usually best for this. I think the Saatva is an especially good choice due to its double layer of springs.
What is the best mattress thickness for couples?
There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to mattresses, so I recommend choosing whatever feels the most comfortable for you. However, if you don’t know where to start, I’ve found that between 12 and 14 inches is a good range.
