Best Overall Mattress – Helix Midnight
The Helix Midnight is amongst Helix’s line of six standard mattresses. It’s known for its more balanced feel, allowing it to accommodate a wide range of sleepers. We also recommend it for couples, as it scored well on our motion isolation, responsiveness, edge support, and cooling tests. For a plusher and more cooling version of this mattress, see the Helix Midnight Luxe. Learn more in our video review.
Expert Opinion
Helix prides themselves on their mattresses being 100 percent made in the USA. The beds are hand-assembled and custom-built in their U.S. facilities. Helix offers an extensive line of hybrid mattresses too, so most folks should be able to find something for them. The reason the Helix Midnight is our top pick is because it has a medium firmness that works for several types of sleepers. They should get a mixture of pressure relief from the bed’s foams, while also receiving healthy support from the layer of sturdy coils at the bottom of the mattress.
To see just who this bed is best for, we ran the Helix Midnight through our pressure map test. We lay a mat across the mattress surface and test it in different sleeping positions. The mat uses thermal imaging to create a graphic of our bodies and show areas of high (red and orange), moderate (yellow), and low (green and blue) pressure. Our pressure map test showed some outstanding results in the back-sleeping position, with little to no pressure at the lumbar region. We’re confident the plush comfort layers should fill in the lower back, while the coils lift the hips for additional support.
What Customers Say
Customers generally appreciate the Helix mattress for its comfort and customization options. Many praise its ability to cater to different sleeping positions and preferences, highlighting the personalized firmness choices. However, some users have reported that it can take a while to fully break in, with initial firmness being firmer than expected for certain models.
Pros of the Helix Midnight Mattress
- Side sleepers should also really like this mattress, as they’ll feel comfortable and supported.
- Hot sleepers should sleep nice and cool on the Helix Midnight, as the coils leave plenty of room for airflow.
- Combination sleepers should also be able to switch sleep positions with ease on this mattress, thanks to those bouncy coils inside.
Cons of the Helix Midnight Mattress
- Heavy sleepers will probably want a firmer and more supportive mattress in order to get some extra support. The brand actually has a model called the Helix Plus that’s made especially for these folks.

This mattress does a wonderful job at offering body contouring while still helping the sleeper stay elevated and lifted as well. The layers of foam should provide comfort while the coil system should offer lots of support.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and mattress tester
Expert Opinion
Every inch of Bear mattresses are made in the United States. The company’s headquarters are in Hoboken, New Jersey, but they have factories throughout the U.S. where their mattresses are made to order. The Bear Elite Hybrid mattress is one of our favorites for active people because it’s built with materials to help bring restorative sleep.
The Elite Hybrid’s secret is Celliant fiber, which is available for an additional fee and purportedly assists with recovery and blood flow. And while we weren’t able to confirm this during testing, we were able to speak to the fiber’s cooling abilities. Lying down on the cover, it really did feel cool-to-the-touch.
What Customers Say
There are 300+ reviews on the company site, and many of them address the Elite Hybrid’s ability to relieve back pain. Customers generally rave about the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress for its exceptional support and pressure relief, making it a favorite among those with active lifestyles. Many also appreciate its cooling features, which help regulate temperature throughout the night. However, some users have noted that the mattress may feel too firm initially, requiring an adjustment period for comfort.

- The Bear Elite Hybrid comes in three firmness levels: Luxury Plush, Luxury Firm, and Extra Firm. So every sleeper should be able to find the right firmness level for them.
- Hot sleepers should enjoy the cooling materials in the Bear Elite Hybrid, like the Phase Change Material, copper-infused memory foam, and pocketed coils.
- Combination sleepers should be happy on this responsive mattress.

Most Supportive Mattress – Saatva Classic
The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It’s a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs. The white glove delivery Saatva provides is an added perk and will save you the headache of getting rid of your old mattress (they take it away for free!). For more information, watch our video review.
Expert Opinion
Saatva mattresses are handcrafted in the United States and feature high-quality materials. The Saatva Classic is one of our favorite mattresses from the company because it’s super supportive with its coil-on-coil construction. It’s also offered in three different firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. So every sleeper can pick the right firmness level for them.
One aspect of supportive that is important to consider is edge support, or the strength of a mattress’s perimeter. To test this, we sit down and lie down on the edge of the mattress and see how much it collapses underneath us. The Saatva has a reinforced edge support system, and the edges didn’t sink under our weight during testing. This earned it a 5 out of 5 edge support score, and means that folks who sleep close to the edge of the bed should be comfortable.
What Customers Say
Customers often praise the Saatva Classic mattress for its luxurious feel and excellent support, making it ideal for those who prefer a high-quality, hotel-like experience. Many also appreciate its eco-friendly materials and the option for customizable firmness levels, allowing for a personalized sleep experience. This brand also offers free White Glove Delivery. On the downside, some users have mentioned that it can be quite heavy and challenging to move, which may be a concern during setup or relocation.
Pros of the Saatva Mattress
- Couples will love the stellar edge support the Saatva features. You can sprawl out and use the full surface of the mattress.
- Along with coming in three firmness levels, you can also choose between two mattress heights. So this bed is easy to customize to your needs.
- Saatva offers the convenient perk of free white glove delivery. This means specialists will deliver the mattress fully compressed, set it up in your room of choice, and remove your old mattress for free.
Cons of the Saatva Mattress
- Although great for supporting couples, the Saatva Classic’s coils hurt its ability to isolate motion. This means you might feel your partner’s larger movements on the other side of the bed.

Best For Combination Sleepers – Nolah Evolution
The Nolah Evolution’s hybrid construction offers the cushioning of memory foam with the responsiveness of coils. The Luxury Firm model is a good option for side and back sleepers due to its medium-firm feel, though there are Plush and Firm versions as well. Those who share a bed may also appreciate its low motion transfer, so you won’t be disturbed by a partner’s movements and its solid edge support to allow you to maximize surface area. For more information, check out our video review.
Expert Opinion
Nolah is based in Colorado and makes all their mattresses in the United States. With plush comfort and a bouncy vibe, we think the Nolah Evolution Hybrid mattress is a great choice for combination sleepers. It’s also offered in three different firmness levels of Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm, so combination sleepers can pick the best option for them depending on their primary sleep position(s).
We also determine whether or not a mattress is good for combination sleepers by putting it through our responsiveness test. This involves us rolling around on the bed and seeing how easy it is to switch positions. We found the Nolah Evolution to have a bouncier feel, and think its responsiveness should increase a bit more with its firmer versions.
What Customers Say
There are a number of reviews on the company site resulting in 4.9 out of 5 stars. Most of these folks are side and back sleepers, who find this bed has an ideal balance of comfort and support. Customers typically appreciate the Nolah Evolution mattress for its impressive cooling properties, which help keep sleepers comfortable throughout the night. Many also highlight its adaptability for different sleep positions, providing excellent support and pressure relief. However, some users have reported that it may take some time to adjust to the mattress’s unique feel, which can be firmer than expected initially.
Pros of the Nolah Evolution Mattress
- With strong edge support and a whopping 15-inch height, the Nolah Evolution Hybrid is also a great durable choice for couples sharing the bed.
- Hot sleepers should like this bed, from its cooling cover to its coils that promote airflow in the bed.
- Those who suffer from joint pain should like the cushy pressure relief this bed offers.
Cons of the Nolah Evolution Mattress
- Budget shoppers may find the price tag to be too high for them. I’d check out our roundup of the best cheap mattresses instead.

Best Mattress For Couples – Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid
The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress combines a foam comfort layer and sturdy coils. This combination of materials makes it bouncy and easy to move around on. It comes in three firmness levels, and we recommend the Medium model for most back sleepers. It’s a great choice for shoppers who are looking for a new mattress on a budget. For more information, check out our video review.
Expert Opinion
Brooklyn Bedding mattresses are custom made in Phoenix, Arizona. The family-owned company started in 1995, and they’re known and respected for their high-quality craftsmanship and products. We think the Signature Hybrid in particular is a great choice for couples because it’s bouncy, supportive, and offered in three firmness levels: Soft, Medium, and Firm.
Another huge factor for couples is motion isolation, or how well a mattress traps movement. This is important for many partners because a bed that isolates motion prevents them from feeling each other’s tossing and turning. We tested motion isolation on the Signature Hybrid by dropping a 10-pound steel ball from three different heights and using a seismometer to measure the level of disturbance. We found that the Signature Hybrid was able to trap movement really well, earning a 4 out of 5.
What Customers Say
Customers generally enjoy the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress for its great balance of comfort and support, making it suitable for a variety of sleeping positions. Many also appreciate its value for money, as it offers high-quality materials at a competitive price point. On the downside, some users have noted that the mattress can have a slight initial off-gassing odor, which may take a few days to fully dissipate.
Pros of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Mattress
- Combination sleepers should appreciate the bounce in this mattress. It should be easy to switch sleeping positions throughout the night.
- Couples shouldn’t feel too disturbed by each other’s movements and can also sleep all the way near the edge of the bed.
- Back sleepers should enjoy the support they’ll get around their lumbar region.
Cons of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Mattress
- Memory foam lovers may want to check out a different option, like some featured in our roundup of favorite foam beds.

Best Budget Mattress – Titan Plus
The Titan Plus mattress is a durable mattress made with heavy sleepers in mind. It’s firm and features heavy-duty coils and Titanflex foam that makes it bouncy and easy to move around on. We think that heavy back sleepers and stomach sleepers should be especially comfortable. For more information on the Titan Plus, check out our video review.
Expert Opinion
Mattresses specifically designed for heavy people tend to be more expensive, as they’re usually constructed with highly durable materials. But the Titan Plus (created by Brooklyn Bedding) is quite affordable. Even though it has sturdy layers of extra-tall coils and dense foams, it still comes at a budget price. You can currently get a queen size for $1,249 before discounts and under $1,000 after discounts. That makes it cheaper than many of the other beds on this roundup. And like all of Brooklyn Bedding’s mattresses, the Titan Plus is custom-made at the company’s own factory in Phoenix, Arizona.
What Customers Say
There are over 2,000 reviews on the company site. Customers often praise the Titan Plus mattress for its exceptional support and durability, particularly appealing to heavier sleepers who need extra stability. Many also appreciate its value and cooling properties, which help maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the night. However, some users have mentioned that it can feel too firm initially, requiring an adjustment period for those used to softer mattresses.
Pros of the Titan Plus Mattress
- Heavy back sleepers over 250 pounds will likely be very comfortable on the Titan Plus. They’ll probably experience the mattress as slightly softer than average weight sleepers — about a 6.5 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale.
- Heavy stomach sleepers should also be comfortable on the Titan Plus, getting the support they need to prevent their hips from bowing too far into the mattress’s layers.
- Even though the Titan Plus was built for larger body types, average weight back and stomach sleepers between 130 and 250 pounds should also be comfortable.
Cons of the Titan Plus Mattress
- We wouldn’t recommend the Titan Plus to side sleepers of any weight. They’ll want a mattress with a bit more softness and contouring at their shoulders and hips.

Best Flippable Mattress – Plank Firm
The Plank Firm more than lives up to its name with its ultra-sturdy foams and supportive feel. While this bed certainly isn’t for everyone, it should be an ideal fit for back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and combination sleepers who want to feel more on top of their mattress than in it. For more information, check out our video review.
Expert Opinion
Brooklyn Bedding’s mattresses are all made in the U.S.A. at the brand’s factory in Arizona, including one of their most unique products, the Plank Firm. It’s an all-foam, flippable bed with a firm side and an extra-firm side. So it’s essentially two mattresses in one. This makes it a good option for anyone who prefers a firm bed, but still wants some flexibility in their firmness level.
To really drive home the level of durability in this mattress, this bed was made for heavier sleepers. It includes super-sturdy comfort foams that still offer contouring, as well as high-density support foam.
What Customers Say
2,000+ reviews are posted on the Plank Firm site, and a lot of customers typically appreciate the Plank Firm mattress for its solid support and durability, making it a great choice for those who prefer a very firm sleeping surface. Many also highlight its unique flippable design, which offers two firmness options in one mattress. However, some users have noted that it may be too firm for certain sleepers, particularly side sleepers who require more cushioning for pressure relief.
Pros of the Plank Firm Mattress
- Back sleepers should be most comfortable on the firm side, which we scored a 7.5 on our mattress firmness scale. They should get some cushioning at their lumbar region while also getting the support they need for a neutral spinal alignment.
- Stomach sleepers need the most support of any sleeping position, and are likely going to be happier on the extra-firm side, which came in at a 8.5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale.
- Couples who don’t want to be disturbed by each other’s movements should like the low motion transfer of this bed.
Cons of the Plank Firm Mattress
- Side sleepers usually need a softer mattress that will contour their shoulders and hips, so they probably won’t be comfortable on the Plank Firm.

Best Organic Mattress – Birch Luxe
Similar to the Birch Natural, the Birch Luxe Natural blends Talalay latex foam with sturdy coils that are zoned for support. We think it’s a good fit for back sleepers and stomach sleepers who enjoy a firmer bed. Its luxury upgrades include a softer cover with organic cotton and cashmere, plus the mattress has earned multiple certifications for safe production and materials. To learn more, see our video review.
Expert Opinion
Birch Living’s mattresses are all assembled and handcrafted in the United States, which the company says allows them to monitor the quality and craftsmanship of each one. Their mattresses have received a handful of third-party certifications for being eco-friendly and organic. The Birch Luxe is not only one of their eco-friendly options that’s free of harmful chemicals and made with natural materials, but it’s also plush and comfortable.

Many also appreciate its eco-friendly materials and natural breathability, which help regulate temperature for a comfortable night’s sleep. Pros of the Birch Luxe Mattress
- Hot sleepers should enjoy how naturally cooling the materials are in this mattress, from its organic cotton to its natural latex.
- Combination sleepers will be able to switch sleeping positions easily on this bouncy hybrid bed.
- Back sleepers should feel supported and cushioned around the lumbar region.
Cons of the Birch Luxe Mattress
- Sleepers on a tight budget may want to look at more affordable options.

What to Consider When Buying a Mattress Made in the USA
Depending on your sleeping position, body type, and sleep style, a mattress will work differently for you than it may for other people. Because of this, we want to share with you some of the things to look out for when shopping for a mattress made in the USA.
Why Consider Mattresses Made in the USA
When products are made in the United States, the companies have to comply with many American labor laws, manufacturing requirements, and regulations. Federal laws help regulate everything from mattress flammability performance to hazardous waste management. They also appeal to employee rights and a wide variety of aspects of the workforce, like hiring practices, wages, discrimination, work breaks, and more. This can mean cleaner, healthier, and safer product production. A lot of consumers also find comfort in contributing to the American economy and workforce.
According to Federal Trade Commission Standards, for a product to be labeled as “American-made” or “made in the USA,” it has to be entirely or almost entirely made in the US. There is not an official approval process for using the term “American-made,” however, so we recommend looking into the brand to see where they source and build their mattresses.
Mattress Materials
As you can see in our above roundup of the best mattresses made in the USA, we’ve included several different types of beds. Here are their differences.
- Foam: All-foam mattresses tend to offer a lot of pressure relief and contouring, which can be beneficial for sleepers who suffer from aches and pains. The downside of all-foam beds is they’re not always as supportive and don’t last as long as other types of mattresses.
- Innerspring: Innerspring mattresses used to refer to beds that had a core constructed of coils and not much else. However, modern innerspring mattresses usually have a good bit of foam in the mix as well to offer pressure relief. They tend to be bouncy and durable, and are a great option for sleepers who want a breathable bed.
- Hybrid: A hybrid mattress is constructed from a combination of different materials — usually foam and coils. A lot of people view them as the best of both worlds. They tend to have a balanced, medium-firm feel, and can offer both contouring and support, which is helpful for a lot of sleepers.
- Latex: A latex mattress is made with latex foam derived from either Talalay or Dunlop latex, resulting in a mattress that’s bouncy, responsive, and naturally cooling. Latex is extremely durable, and is often paired with coils and other types of foam.
Sleeping Position
Sleeping position is important to consider when buying a mattress because the way you sleep can determine how much support, pressure relief, and contouring you need, which may alter the kind of mattress you are looking for.
- Back sleepers: These folks need a mattress that’s going to support them, but also keep them comfortable through pressure relieving materials. They usually do best on hybrid or innerspring mattresses.
- Side sleepers: Side sleepers are going to want a softer mattress in order to get pressure relief and contouring around their shoulders and hips. They tend to work well on foam mattresses, although they can also find a good fit in many hybrid beds.
- Stomach sleepers: Stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress to keep their hips elevated, so they don’t sink down and put their spine out of alignment. We usually steer them toward innerspring and hybrid mattresses.
- Combination sleepers: This refers to sleepers who switch positions throughout the night. Because they need a responsive bed that allows them to easily move around, they can usually find comfort in latex mattresses, hybrid mattresses, and innerspring mattresses.
Firmness
Understanding how you sleep can be especially important when it comes to deciding the firmness of your mattress. Firmness refers essentially to how the mattress feels when you lay on it, but firmer mattresses also generally offer more support, while softer mattresses offer more pressure relief and contouring. These are important factors to consider when you are buying a new, American-made mattress.
To measure the firmness of the mattresses that we test, we lay on them in different sleep positions, and assign them an overall score using our firmness scale. This scale allows us to test all of our mattresses empirically, and have a universal method of testing them. The scale places mattresses from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most firm, and 6.5 being medium firm.
Temperature Regulation
When you are buying an American-made mattress, you want to be sure you are getting something that is high quality and comfortable. One thing that will help keep your mattress comfortable is cooling. A mattress that can regulate temperature all evening will help you stay asleep and feel more rested. Mattresses with quality materials may also offer better cooling sleep. We recommend looking out for materials, like breathable coils, gel-infused foams, and cooling covers.
To test the mattresses in this list for their cooling capabilities, we used a thermal gun to measure the temperature of the mattress before and after someone had laid on it. the difference in temperature tells us how good the bed is at temperature regulation and cooling. We consider anything under a 10-degree difference to be good cooling, and anything under a 6-degree difference to be great cooling.
Body Types
Considering your body type can be very important when shopping for a mattress made in the US. The important reason is depending on your weight and body type, you may have different needs for your mattress. We suggest consulting the information below, and testing our different mattresses before purchasing them, so you can be sure you are supported enough on your bed.
We categorize lightweight sleepers as weighing less than 130 pounds, average weight sleepers as weighing between 130 and 250 pounds, and heavy sleepers as weighing more than 250 pounds. Beds are typically going to feel firmer to lightweight sleepers than they do heavyweight sleepers. If you’re heavier in weight, you’re also going to need more support from a bed. We typically recommend heavier sleepers look for an innerspring mattress or one that was designed with them in mind.
Edge Support
Edge support relates to the outer edges of the mattress. Having good edge support can be extremely beneficial to anyone that have a hard time getting out of bed such as seniors, heavy people, anyone with chronic pain or pregnant women. When looking for good edge support be on the lookout for terms like “reinforced edges” and “strong edge support”. We test edge support by having our testing sit or lay on the bed and using a yard stick to measure how much the mattress sinks under our weight. Anything more than a 5 inch sink is considered bad edge support in our tests.
Company Policies
Purchasing an American-made mattress may be important to you for any number of reasons, and as we have highlighted above, some of your major concerns may be about materials, construction, and quality. Another thing you might be thinking about is the policies of the USA-based retailer you are buying from. Factors like shipping, price, returns, and warranties all effect your choice to buy or not to buy a mattress, so we have broken down these factors below.
Shipping and Returns
Shipping, handling, and returns are all factors that may affect the price of your new bed, and may also influence your choice to buy from a certain company. A lot of mattress companies offer free shipping, whether you are buying online or in a store. This can be helpful when you are already investing in a new bed. However, policies for delivery vary across brands. Some will drop the mattress at your door, others offer White Glove Delivery for an extra fee, and some do it for free. These policies are worth looking into when buying a new bed, so you know exactly what you are getting.
Mattress returns can also be a hassle. We recommend looking into the return policies of he specific brand you are buying from. Some companies offer free returns and some do not offer any. A common practice is for retailers to offer returns after a month of trying the mattress, but within the duration of the sleep trial, so familiarize yourself before buying.
Warranty
Warranty refers to the amount of time a mattress is essentially insured. If something happens to your mattress within the warranty period, you may be able to exchange it or return it for free. We generally recommend buying a mattress from a company that offers a 10-year warranty or longer. That is about how long you should keep your mattress before replacing it, so it should last you that long.
Sleep Trial
Sleep trial refers to the number of nights you can try your mattress to be sure you like it. Most returns can only be down within the time offered in the sleep trial, so we recommend opting for a long sleep trial, to be sure you love the mattress. This is especially important if you buy your mattress online without trying it first.
Price
The price of mattresses can vary widely. Some mattresses can be found for under $500, and some go up to $3,000. The quality, brand, material, and kind of mattress will all affect the price, but a cheaper mattress does not necessarily mean worse quality. Mattresses also often go on sale around holidays like Labor Day, Memorial Day, and Black Friday, so you may want to shop around those times to find the best deals. You can also check out our recommendations for the best cheap mattresses or the best mattresses under $1,000 to find more budget-friendly choices.
Customization
Mattresses that are made within the US offer more customization to offer a wide range of options to cater to individual needs. Shoppers can choose from various sizes, including twin, full, queen, king, and California king, ensuring a perfect fit for any bedroom. Heights can also be tailored, with options typically ranging from low-profile to thicker models for enhanced support and comfort. Additionally, firmness levels vary from soft to extra firm (1-10 on our firmness scale), allowing sleepers to select the ideal feel for their sleeping style and preferences. This level of personalization ensures that everyone can find a mattress that aligns perfectly with their comfort and support requirements.
When to Buy a US Mattress
- Presidents’ Day (February)
- Memorial Day (May)
- Labor Day (September)
- Cyber 5 (November)
- Christmas (December)
FAQs
What does it mean for a mattress to be a bed-in-a-box?
Some mattresses will arrive at your door compressed in a box (bed-in-a-box) and others will arrive fully formed. Most bed-in-a-box brands are available exclusively online and tend to be more affordable due to low overhead costs, simpler mattress designs, and direct-to-consumer shipping. You’ll have to unbox the mattress and allow it to decompress before using, which usually takes 24 to 48 hours.
How do I choose the right mattress company to purchase a bed from?
It’s always important to read reviews and do your research when wanting to buy from a new brand. We’ve carefully vetted all the brands in this roundup, and a good way to vet a brand you’re unfamiliar with is to check the warranty and trial period. Longer trial periods and warranties are signs you’re getting a reliable product. You can also interact with the brand’s customer service team. A responsive, transparent team is a sign that you’re dealing with a reputable mattress company.
How can I extend the life of my mattress?
We recommend rotating your bed 180 degrees every six to eight months to make it last longer.
