What is the Douglas Hand Knit Weighted Blanket Made Of?

As with most bedding products, which materials are used in a weighted blanket can tell you a lot about how that weighted blanket will feel and function.

P1059579

The Douglas Hand Knit weighted blanket is made with giant yarn to form a chunky knit. The individual strands are cotton jersey knit filled with recycled polyester fill for a more eco-friendly touch.

There is no weighted fill in this blanket, such as glass beads or plastic pellets. Instead, the weight of the blanket comes solely from the weight of the giant yarn. This is a pro for folks who have pets or little kids — no worries about choking-hazard beads spilling out of the blanket if it tears.

Additionally, the Douglas Hand Knit weighted blanket is OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified, meaning it surpassed the highest criteria for chemical safety.

How Much Does the Douglas Hand Knit Weighted Blanket Weigh?

The Douglas Hand Knit weighted blanket is available in three weight options: 10-pound, 15-pound, and 20-pound. I tested the 15-pound blanket for this review.

P1059571

When choosing a weight blanket, it’s best to choose a blanket weight that is close to 10 percent of your own body weight. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds, then a 20-pound blanket would be best for you.

What Does the Douglas Hand Knit Weighted Blanket Feel Like?

I found the Douglas Hand Knit weighted blanket to be super cozy. I am a big fan of this style of weighted blanket, which uses woven or knitted chunky fabric, because it provides a super even weight distribution, a pleasant texture, and lots of breathability.

P1059592

The cotton jersey used in this blanket is super soft, smooth, and cozy. I love jersey because it feels like a soft, worn-in T-shirt. I also liked the size of the Douglas Hand Knit weighted blanket, as it was large enough to easily cover me with some excess blanket on either side of me. That creates a nice, enveloped feeling.

Is the Douglas Hand Knit Weighted Blanket Good for Hot Sleepers?

I think the Douglas Hand Knit weighted blanket is a good option for hot sleepers. It doesn’t have a cool-to-the-touch feel or any cooling materials, but it is very breathable. The chunky knit is loose enough that there are basically giant holes in the blanket that air can flow through, so you should have no worries about overheating under this blanket. I felt cool and comfortable resting under it.

P1059583

How Durable is the Douglas Hand Knit Weighted Blanket?

The Douglas Hand Knit weighted blanket feels like a well-made, high-quality blanket to me. As I mentioned before, the lack of fillers in this blanket reduces the risk of beads or pellets spilling out of it if it ever rips or tears. However, the giant yarn used to create this knit blanket is so thick that I imagine it would be quite difficult to rip.

Additionally, this weighted blanket is machine washable, which ensures that you can keep it nice and clean.

Is the Douglas Hand Knit Weighted Blanket Good for You?

Whew, we’ve covered a lot in this review so far. Let’s summarize with who I think should try the Douglas Hand Knit weighted blanket, as well as some complaints.

P1059569

Who Should Try the Douglas Hand Knit Weighted Blanket

  • If you are a hot sleeper, you should appreciate how breathable this blanket is. The chunky knit allows for lots of airflow, meaning body heat won’t be trapped under the blanket.
  • If you want a machine washable weighted blanket, this is a great option. Many weighted blankets aren’t machine washable or only have a washable duvet cover, but this whole blanket can be washed.
  • If you want a braided weighted blanket, this is a good choice. It uses no weighted fill, only the weight of the fabric itself, so no worries about beads or pellets ever spilling out.

Douglas Hand Knit Weighted Blanket Complaints

  • If you prefer a velvety or minky texture, this blanket won’t be a good choice for you. The knitted fabric is made with cotton jersey, which is soft and smooth but not particularly fuzzy.
  • If you want a weighted blanket to share, the Douglas Hand Knit isn’t a good option. All the weight options are different sizes, but they are better suited for use by a single person. To share, it’s better to pick a queen size or king size blanket. I recommend looking at either the Gravity weighted blanket or the Hush weighted blanket instead.
  • If you live outside Canada, unfortunately the Douglas Hand Knit weighted blanket won’t be available to you, as Douglas does not ship outside of Canada.
