Is the Dreamfoam Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?

How well a mattress will work for you depends on factors like your preferred sleeping position, how much you weigh, and whether or tend to run hot or cold. Take a look at some of my recommendations below to help you decide.

Who I recommend the Dreamfoam Hybrid mattress for

  • First and foremost, I think this is a great bed for hot sleepers. It’s made with a cooling cover, cooling foam, and a layer of encased coils for added airflow.
  • Budget shoppers will love how affordable this mattress is. In fact, it’s one of the least expensive cooling mattresses I’ve tested.
  • I like this bed for back and side combination sleepers — it has just the right amount of firmness and bounce to keep these sleepers happy.
  • I think this bed is a great option for kids or teens, since it comes at a low price point and has a level of support that’s great for smaller bodies.

Who I don’t recommend Dreamfoam Hybrid mattress for

  • I wouldn’t recommend this bed for heavy people. These sleepers need a mattress with a bit more support and durability. I’d steer these sleepers to our best mattress for heavy people roundup.
  • Stomach sleepers aren’t going to find the level of support they need from this bed. They’ll do better on a firmer mattress, like one of the beds in our best firm mattress article.
  • I also don’t think this bed is quite right for strict side sleepers. These sleepers need a bed that offers more pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.

How Firm is the Dreamfoam Hybrid Mattress?

To kick things off, I’d like to take a look at this mattress’s overall firmness.

Before we dig into this section, I just want to take a moment to acknowledge the subjective nature of firmness. As with any feel factor, this characteristic can change a lot depending on one’s body size, shape, and weight. Therefore, my read of this bed’s firmness could be totally different from your own! For reference, I’m 5 feet 10 inches and weigh around 190 pounds. I also prefer to sleep on my stomach, which means I have a preference for a slightly firmer feel.

DreamFoam Arctic Dreams Firmness

After rolling around this mattress for a while, I decided to give it a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, I’d say this bed is certainly on the softer side of things.

The Dreamfoam mattress got a 6 from me because of its fairly simple design. It consists mainly of one top layer of foam over a layer of coils. This means the bed isn’t going to be super supportive. In fact, I’d say that if you weigh over 200 pounds, you’re likely to push right through the materials. For that reason, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this Dreamfoam mattress for heavy people. Children, however, may find that this mattress provides just the right amount of support and pressure relief.

Dreamfoam Hybrid Mattress Performance

To give you an even better idea of how this mattress might perform for your individual needs, I’m going to share how it will perform for sleepers of different body types and sleep position preferences.

Testing the Dreamfoam Hybrid Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions

Depending on how you sleep, you’ll find you need a certain amount of support in some areas, and pressure relief in others. Take a look at how I think sleepers of each major weight class will fare on this bed.

Is the Dreamfoam  Hybrid a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?

  • Light Back Sleepers – I think this bed is a great option for these sleepers. They should get a nice level of support and some gentle cushioning at the lower back.
  • Light Side Sleepers – I think light side sleepers will fare just ok on this bed. Unlike heavier side sleepers, these sleepers won’t sink too far into the foam, and will likely get some nice pressure relief.
  • Light Stomach Sleepers – I think the Dreamfoam Hybrid is just a bit too soft for these sleepers. I’d steer them to a mattress with a higher firmness level.

Is the Dreamfoam Hybrid a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 pounds)?

  • Average Weight Back Sleepers – These sleepers should be pretty happy on this mattress. They’ll get a nice level of support.
  • Average Weight Side Sleepers – Side sleepers who switch between their back and side should be happy here, but strict side sleepers will likely find their hips and shoulders sinking too far into this bed.
  • Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – This mattress is too soft for these sleepers. I’d steer them to a firmer bed that will offer more lift at the hips.
DreamFoam Arctic Dreams Back Sleeper
The Dreamfoam Hybrid is a good choice for back sleepers.

Is the Dreamfoam Hybrid a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?

  • Heavy Back Sleepers – This mattress doesn’t have the level of support heavy sleepers need. These sleepers should opt for a stronger innerspring or hybrid bed.
  • Heavy Side Sleepers – See above.
  • Heavy Stomach Sleepers – See above.

Dreamfoam Hybrid Pain Relief Performance

Pain relief really comes down to pressure relief. Pressure relief refers to how well (or not well!) a mattress is able to alleviate tension at sensitive spots like the shoulders, hips, and lower back. If you’re someone who struggles with fibromyalgia, joint pain, or arthritis, you’ll want to pay extra close attention to this section.

To demonstrate this bed’s propensity for pressure relief, I used a pressure map. This device captures the amount of force I’m exerting on the structure as I move around, providing a colored “map” of all the different pressure zones. To read the map, all you have to know is that green indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.

DreamFoam Arctic Dreams Pressure Map

Back Pain – The Dreamfoam mattress felt ok on my back. I got some decent support from the coil layer. While on my side, my back didn’t feel as good, as I felt I wasn’t getting the right amount of sinkage at my hips and shoulders. Though my back wasn’t in pain on my stomach, this mattress doesn’t have enough support to lift the hips in line with the shoulders, which prevents back pain.

Shoulder Pain – In terms of side sleeping with shoulder pain, while there was some initial relief as the memory foam layer contoured to my shoulders and hips, the longer I laid in this position, the more uncomfortable I got. While on my back, my shoulders felt nicely cushioned. This mattress is not a good choice for stomach sleepers

Hip Pain- And finally, hip pain. Similar to shoulder pain, hip pain is going to be most affected by side sleeping, where you’re putting the most weight on these joints and their pressure points. I don’t think this mattress has enough cushioning for side sleepers with hip pain. I think back sleepers with hip pain should be fine here, but again, this isn’t a great bed for stomach sleeping.

Dreamfoam Hybrid Performance for Couples

If you sleep with a partner, you’ll want to keep a few extra factors in mind, like motion transfer, sex, cooling, and edge support. I’ll give more details on what these terms mean, and how this mattress performed, below.

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s take a look at this bed’s motion transfer. Basically, this measure refers to how much movement is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. If you sleep with a partner or even a furry best friend, you’ll want to pay attention to this test!

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of four inches, eight inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

DreamFoam Arctic Dreams Motion Transfer
Motion transfer results for the Dreamfoam Hybrid.

In my opinion, these motion transfer results are just okay. While smaller movements shouldn’t be an issue, you’re likely to feel major tossing and turning in the night. Why? Well, the two-layer design doesn’t do much to absorb and dissipate motion.

Sex

For a mattress to be good for sex, it needs a combination of bounce and responsiveness. Thanks to its innerspring coils, this bed has some nice bounce, and it’s quite responsive (meaning it reacts quickly to pressure) as well. I’d say it’s a good mattress for sex.

Cooling

The cooling category is where this mattress really shines. It’s made with a range of cooling materials from its cover to bottom, so hot sleepers are really going to like this bed.

Edge Support

Edge support refers to how well a mattress holds up at the sides as compared to the center. A mattress with good edge support is going to feel larger, since you can spread out all the way to the edges without feeling like you’re going to fall off.

The Dreamfoam Hybrid has slightly below average edge support. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise, since this bed is on the cheaper side. Really great edge support is usually found in more luxury mattresses.

What is the Dreamfoam Hybrid Mattress Made Of?

The Dreamfoam Hybrid mattress features a simple two-layer design of gel memory foam over encased coils.

Editor’s Note: When this review was originally written, the Dreamfoam Arctic Dreams mattress was offered in a hybrid and all-foam design. We tested the all-foam, but the current model is only available as a hybrid.

Cover – In my opinion, one of the most interesting parts of this mattress is actually found in the cover. Not only is it quilted with a bit of a foam for added comfort, but it also features a special cooling panel to help dissipate body heat.

Comfort – To keep the cooling party going, the next layer up is one of gel memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which allows it to contour to the curves of the body as you press into the structure. Folks in need of pressure relief at the shoulders and hips may enjoy this gentle hug. And though memory foam has a slight reputation for absorbing and retaining body heat, the cooling gel infusion here helps to mitigate this issue.

Support – Beneath the layer of memory foam, you’ll land on either a section of encased coils. The encased coils lend the bed a much bouncier feel. They’ll also make things just a touch firmer.

DreamFoam Arctic Dreams Materials
The Dreamfoam Hybrid, formerly called the Dreamfoam Arctic Dreams, used to come in an all-foam and hybrid versions, but now it only comes in a hybrid.

Dreamfoam Hybrid Mattress Unboxing and Off-Gassing

The Dreamfoam Hybrid is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which means it comes compressed in a box. You’ll have to unbox it at home, and I’d recommend doing so in the room you plan to use it. Like most bed-in-a-box mattresses, it will need some time to off-gas, where gases trapped during compression are released. I’d wait at least 24 hours for the bed to fully decompress.

My Final Thoughts about the Dreamfoam Hybrid Mattress

The Dreamfoam Hybrid mattress is an affordable model that will likely work best for college students or those on a budget. It could be a good new mattress for a guest bedroom as well. It comes in either an all-foam or hybrid design and it’s worth noting that the hybrid version will be slightly bouncier than the all-foam one.

My favorite things about the Dreamfoam Hybrid

Perhaps the biggest selling point of this bed is that it’s a cheap mattress. If you’re shopping on a budget or looking to snag a spare bed for a guest room, this could be a nice pick for you. In fact, I think this mattress could actually be a great choice for kids. Though it doesn’t necessarily provide the deep pressure relief or support that adult sleepers might need, it should more than suffice the slumber needs of a child or teenager. One standout feature of the Hybrid is that it’s a great cooling mattress. Folks who sleep hot might benefit from this characteristic.

My Dreamfoam Hybrid Complaints

Overall, I’d say this mattress lacks support. If you’re someone who struggles with aches and pains in the night, this may not be a great pick for you. Stomach sleepers, in particular, will likely want to avoid this mattress. Why? It doesn’t offer nearly enough support at the hips.
