Those are the main differences and similarities, but what really sets the Midnight Luxe apart from its standard counterpart? Below, I will compare each mattress based on factors, including firmness, pressure relief, support, and more.

Please note that many of these factors are inherently subjective and can change depending on body size, shape, and weight.

What’s the Firmness Difference?

During testing, our experts found that both versions of the Helix Midnight were a 6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which is the industry standard (medium-firm) for most mattresses. We believe most sleepers should feel comfortable on either mattress because this firmness level typically provides the ideal balance of cushioning and support.

What Does Each Mattress Feel Like?  

Both mattresses are a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale; however, sleepers with larger bodies or those with sensitive joints might prefer the added pillow top on the Midnight Luxe. The pillow top provides an additional layer for sleepers to sink into, offering more cushioning without potentially compromising spinal alignment.

How Does the Construction Differ?

Similar to the Helix Midnight, the Helix Midnight Luxe is a hybrid mattress that contains memory foam and pocketed coils. However, the Midnight Luxe is two inches taller and features a soft pillow-top cover and responsive memory foam layers to help side sleepers and those with sensitive joints find greater pressure relief.

Helix also offers an additional ErgoAlign Contour Layer upgrade with the Luxe model, which could benefit sleepers with lower back pain.

Helix Midnight vs. Helix Midnight Luxe: Comparing Mattress Performance

Using our review methodology, my fellow mattress testers and I perform a series of tests on every mattress we get. This process helps us determine who these mattresses could be best suited for. See how each of these Helix mattresses performed on our testing gauntlet below.

Temperature

During testing, our in-house team found that the Helix Midnight Luxe outperformed the base model in the cooling category. To test cooling, we use a thermal gun to measure the mattress’s surface temperature before and after lying on it for five minutes. 

The temperature of the Helix Midnight Luxe only increased by 7 degrees during this test, while the Helix Midnight saw an increase of 10.5 degrees. While neither result is poor, we would recommend hot sleepers opt for the Midnight Luxe to avoid waking up covered in sweat.

“The surface of the Midnight Luxe is cool to the touch,” said one tester. “I didn’t notice it heating beneath me while I lay there. I felt cool and crisp. When I touched it after lying there for five minutes, it didn’t feel much different than before I lay on it. I don’t think sleeping hot would be an issue on this bed.”

Motion Isolation

Couples with restless partners know firsthand how challenging it can be to catch some shuteye with constant tossing and turning next to you. Effective motion isolation dampens movement and prevents it from rippling across the surface to your side of the bed. We evaluate motion isolation using a water test and a partner test.

Both models performed favorably, earning a 4 out of 5 on our motion isolation tests. If your goal is to minimize disruptions caused by movement, you and your significant other should fare well on either option. However, one tester noted that the Helix Midnight transferred more movement to their side of the bed while their testing partner switched between sleeping positions next to them.

“I found the movement to be most disruptive when my colleague tossed and turned next to me on the Helix Midnight,” she said. “That said, I didn’t notice as much movement when he got in and out of bed. I think very light sleepers prone to waking up will be disturbed, but sound sleepers should be able to sleep through it just fine.”

Edge Support

Robust edge support ensures that a mattress is just as secure around its perimeter as it is in the center. A mattress with reinforced edges is also less likely to sag over time. If you share a bed with another person or prefer to sleep near the edges, a sturdy perimeter can make your mattress feel much bigger.

Both mattresses performed exceptionally in this category; however, the Helix Midnight Luxe was the clear winner, scoring a near-perfect 4.8 out of 5 in this category. Our in-house mattress experts found that they would lie along the far reaches of the bed without feeling unsteady or falling off.

“When lying on the edge of the Helix Midnight Luxe, I didn’t feel at any risk of tumbling or sliding off,” said one tester. “I think you could sleep at the far edges of this bed without worrying about the sides sagging or crumbling.”

Pressure Relief

My colleagues and I evaluate pressure relief by inviting a panel of mattress testers of different shapes and sizes to lie on each mattress in the side and back-sleeping position and provide us with their feedback.

We also roll a specialized mat onto the surface of the mattress and then lie on it in different sleep positions. The mat detects pressure buildup and uses thermal imaging to create a graphic. Blue to green indicates low pressure, and areas with yellow to red indicate high pressure.

The Helix Midnight and Midnight Luxe performed similarly on our pressure map tests; however, the standard Midnight showed a slight edge in the back-sleeping pressure relief category. Both mattresses scored a 4.3 out of 5 in side-sleeping pressure relief. 

For these tests, we invited our chief medical product tester and licensed physical therapist, Dr. Joe Tedesco, to weigh in from a clinical perspective.

“On my back, I get a lot of sinkage from the pillow top, and I can feel another layer supporting me on the Midnight,” said Dr. Tedesco. “It’s not very bouncy, and my feet aren’t sinking into it. I’m getting support at my shoulders, and they aren’t caving in. It’s appropriately soft without a bouncy feel. It has some good lumbar support between my hips and lower back. I would say this is solid overall for back sleeping.”

Pain Relief

Based on the pressure relief test results, I would recommend the Helix Midnight to back sleepers with lower back pain and the Midnight Luxe to side sleepers who experience pressure or pain in their shoulders and hips.

During testing, our team found that the Helix Midnight effectively contoured the lower lumbar region and removed pressure from the hips and lower back. Meanwhile, the additional cushioning on the Helix Midnight Luxe model provided more cushioning for pressure points, such as the hips and shoulders, in the side sleeping position.

“The marshmallowy pillow top of the Midnight Luxe cushioned my shoulder and hip when I lay in a side-sleeping position,” our in-house tester said. “It filled in the gap at my hip and contoured me in a way that was really comfortable.”

Durability

When evaluating durability, we consider the mattress’s construction, the quality of its materials, and its edge support.

As Dr. Raj Dasgupta explains, “Mattresses with robust perimeter support are more likely to hold up against wear and tear while maintaining their structural integrity over time.”
