I’m super pumped for this review because I’ll be comparing two of the most popular online mattress brands on the block: Leesa and Tuft & Needle. Leesa has made a name for itself with its high-quality mattresses and social impact initiatives, while Tuft & Needle has laid claim to greatness with a sleek two-layer foam design developed by Silicon Valley engineers. These beds are undeniably at the top of their game, but the question remains: Which one is best for you?

Leesa vs Tuft & Needle: Which is Better for You?
The Leesa is a firm all-foam mattress-in-a-box It offers gentle pressure relief and support. The Tuft & Needle is also an all-foam bed-in-a-box mattress, and it offers an impressive amount of support and cooling properties. Let’s see which may be best for you!
Who Should Buy Leesa
- The Leesa is a good choice for hot sleepers, thanks to its top layer of breathable foam, which allows for lots of airflow, keeping you nice and cool all night long.
- Back sleepers will find that this mattress promotes a healthy alignment of the spine and supports the lower back, offering gentle pressure relief.
- If you’re sleeping in a couple, the Leesa’s memory foam layers might do a bit better in the motion isolation department than its competitor, Tuft & Needle.
Who Should Buy Tuft & Needle
- If you’re a budget shopper you’ll probably prefer the Tuft & Needle mattress. It feels similar to the Leesa but is significantly cheaper.
- The Tuft & Needle also sleeps cool, due to its graphite-infused adaptive foam top layer.
- Combination sleepers will find good edge support and mobility throughout the night on the Tuft & Needle.
Leesa vs Tuft & Needle: Similarities and Differences
First, I’ll give you a brief overview of the key similarities and differences between these beds. I’d also encourage you to check out my full Leesa mattress review and Tuft & Needle mattress review, which provide a lengthier and more detailed discussion of each bed.
Main Similarities
- The Leesa and the Tuft & Needle both sleep cool. The breathability of these mattresses is a big perk for any hot sleeper.
- These beds are both all-foam mattresses. This means the main support in these beds is provided by foam layers rather than coil support systems.
- The Tuft & Needle and Leesa are both firm mattresses. I’d say both of these beds are especially good picks for back sleepers.

Main Differences
- The Tuft & Needle mattress is significantly cheaper than the Leesa, so budget shoppers may prefer this bed.
- The Leesa offers just a bit more sinkage than the Tuft & Needle original mattress, something folks who like a little body-contouring might enjoy.
- The Leesa uses memory foam in its construction, while the Tuft & Needle uses exclusively poly foam. So sleepers looking for a little relief around their pressure points might prefer the Leesa.

Leesa and Tuft & Needle Mattress Feel Comparison
Next, let’s delve into the stuff that probably brought you here in the first place: how these beds actually feel. To give you the best sense of what you can expect when you drift off to slumberland on either the Leesa or the Tuft & Needle mattress, I’m going to scope out each bed’s unique firmnesses, sinkage capabilities, and motion transfer rates.

Leesa
The Leesa is a firm feeling mattress. I gave it a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. As a note, the industry standard for medium firmness is 6.5 out of 10 for medium-firm mattresses.
I found the Leesa’s combo of foams produced a firmly supportive sleeping experience. While you’ll certainly sink in through the top two sections for some satisfying pressure relief at the shoulders and hips, you’ll feel more on top of than in this structure. This could be a winning feel for back sleepers looking for some relief in the lower back pressure points.
I would like to point out that while I found this bed to be pretty supportive across sleeping positions (for reference, I’m 5’10”, 190 lbs.), heavier individuals may find that they sink through the bed’s three layers.

Tuft & Needle
Like the Leesa mattress, the Tuft & Needle has a firm feel, which I also scored a 7 out of 10. The Tuft & Needle’s soft yet supportive comfort layer is going to provide a strong initial feeling of bounciness and support. Since the base layer is immediately beneath the comfort layer, you’re also not going to feel in any danger of sinking too far into the bed or being swaddled in too many layers of foam.
This makes the Tuft & Needle an excellent choice for those who routinely sleep on their backs or folks who change sleeping positions frequently throughout the night. Combination sleepers should really enjoy the responsiveness of this mattress’s top layer, which should make it easy for them to move around on this bed.
The Tuft & Needle did an okay job isolating motion transfer. This means if you sleep with a partner, you might feel disturbed by their tossing and turning at night. The Leesa had similar trouble isolating motion, so if you are easily disturbed at night I might recommend checking out a memory foam mattress instead.

Comparing What it’s Like to Sleep on the Leesa and the Tuft & Needle
Depending on your personal preferences like sleeping position and characteristics like body weight, a mattress may feel different for you than someone else. This is why we like to dissect how a bed may perform for a number of sleepers and sleeping positions in any mattress comparison. Let’s see how each of these beds could fair for you!
Leesa
Back — Back sleepers should experience a great level of support and cushion with the Leesa original. It contours nicely around the lower back, which helps prevent pressure points from forming in that area.
Side — The Leesa mattress may not be the best mattress choice for side sleepers. It will likely feel too firm and won’t offer the level of sinkage in the hips and shoulders that these sleepers need. I’d take a look at one of our memory foam mattress picks instead.
Stomach — I think that these sleepers will find this all-foam bed to be too soft. I’d steer them in the direction of our best mattresses for stomach sleepers instead.
Body Weight — Heavier sleepers will not find the support or durability they need on this mattress. I’d recommend they check out our best mattresses for heavy people instead. Lighter back sleepers will really like the firm support of the Leesa mattress, and most strict stomach sleepers will too. Light side sleepers won’t enjoy this firmer mattress and should opt for something a bit softer.
Tuft & Needle
Back — These sleepers will get nice spinal support, as well as pressure relief in the lumbar region with the Tuft & Needle mattress.
Side — Side sleepers won’t find the sinkage they need in this firm, poly foam mattress. I’d recommend something softer with contouring properties, like one of our best memory foam mattresses.
Stomach — I don’t think the Tuft & Needle will be the best mattress for stomach sleepers. Their hips will likely sink too far into this bed, bringing up concerns for spinal misalignment.
Body Weight — Heavier sleepers will want to look elsewhere for a firmer mattress that has more support and durability, such as a hybrid or innerspring mattress. Lighter sleepers on their stomach and back should be comfortable on the Tuft & Needle, while side sleepers will likely feel it as too firm.
Comparing Leesa and Tuft & Needle Prices

Comparing Leesa and Tuft & Needle Mattress Materials
Let’s take a look at how these two beds are constructed. Critical differences can be found between the quantity and density of foams, as well as the type of cooling technology employed in the two mattresses, but as you’ll discover below, the two most obvious contrasts are in the transition and comfort layers.
Leesa
- Cover — The Leesa mattress cover is made of thick twill fabric that’s soft to the touch.
- Comfort Layer — A breathable poly foam top layer kicks things off. This is a responsive, cooling, memory foam layer that hot sleepers should enjoy.
- Transition Layer — Below that is a memory foam layer. This material has a slower response to pressure than the foam above it, allowing for some nice body contouring and sinkage.
- Support Layer — The bottom layer of the mattress is made with high-density poly foam to offer structure and support.

Tuft & Needle
- Cover — The Tactel cover here is thin and stretchy by design, which allows air to flow through the mattress and keep the sleeper cool. Tactel has rapid cooling and drying properties that help this mattress sleep cool.
- Comfort Layer — In the second layer we encounter Tuft & Needle’s proprietary Adaptive® foam, a poly foam with a 2.9 lb density. This luxurious top layer provides softness, pressure relief, and a decent amount of bounce to keep the sleeper feeling well-supported.
- Foundation Layer — Immediately below the comfort layer is the poly foam base layer. The bed gets most of its structure and solidity from this dense support foam.

Comparing Leesa and Tuft & Needle Customer Service
Below, I’ll give each brand’s customer service team a score based on my personal experience interacting with each team. Possible scores include Stellar, Great, Satisfactory, and Poor.
Leesa Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating
- Satisfactory: I gave Leesa a satisfactory score because they didn’t have someone manning their phones or chat feature when I called. Their customer service team emailed me a very thoughtful response to my question (and returned my call), but I did have to wait for a response.
Tuft & Needle Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating
- Satisfactory: I gave Tuft & Needle a Satisfactory score because while I did get a very thoughtful response to my question, I had to talk to a chat bot before speaking to a rep. When I tried to navigate through the Tuft & Needle website during my help session the chat window closed and I had to restart. A few other mattress websites let you navigate the website while on chat, which I think is a nice feature, especially if you need help at checkout.
