The Saatva Rx is a luxury mattress specifically designed for those with back and joint pain. Saatva mattresses often make our “best of” lists because many of the brand’s models do an outstanding job of combining luxurious touches with support, comfort, and durability. So, when I heard that the Rx had tweaked some of its features in an attempt to boost the support around the perimeter of the bed, I called in fellow mattress drill sergeants, Riley Otis and Erin Chiles, and we put it through testing boot camp to bring you the latest update on this model.
After testing over 330 mattresses and helping more than 60,000 people find the best one for them, Sleepopolis’s team of certified sleep science coaches and product experts can give you a detailed breakdown of each bed’s pros and cons. However, since quality sleep is one of the main tenets of a healthy lifestyle, we also called on Sleepopolis’s Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, and Chief Medical Product Tester Dr. Joe Tedesco, DPT, OCS, ATC, CSCS, to see if the Saatva Rx is a prescription they would write.
Once the extensive testing process was complete, we all agreed that the Saatva Rx is a pressure-relief unicorn. A mattress rarely works for folks in all three of our weight categories, let alone in multiple sleeping positions. However, the Rx came close to a perfect score on its pressure relief performance, making it a top choice for side and back sleepers of all weight classes.

Designed specifically for sleepers with back pain and joint pain, the Saatva Rx features several layers that combine both foam and coils. This creates a blend of comfort and support throughout the entire mattress that’s cushioning enough for any aches and pains while still being sturdy enough for a neutral spinal alignment. What our tester says:
“Overall, the mattress offers a pleasant mix of comfort and support to create a balanced, medium-firm feel. While lying on the bed, I experienced plushness and cushioning from the quilted cover and upper foam layers, but felt firmly supported by the coils below. I think the unique design of this bed, with features like micro coils and the foam caps on the pocketed coils, contributes to this very balanced feel. ” – Sosha Leiws, senior staff writer and certified sleep science coach
Saatva Rx Mattress Overview
The Rx is a sturdy, high-quality hybrid mattress from Saatva, a luxury mattress manufacturer, designed to relieve chronic back pain and joint sensitivities. In addition to the foam and coils typical to this type of bed, the Rx includes a few unique design features. Added quilting through the lumbar area provides extra support and durability in the middle of the mattress, while a layer of high-density foam encases the micro coils to increase contouring and comfort. Two separate layers of individually wrapped coils give the bed a supportive and responsive feel. These layers add up to a universally appealing medium firmness and a contouring yet supportive feel that allows the Rx to work for various body types and sleep positions. It also comes with some added perks.

Like all Saatva models, you’ll receive the 15-inch Rx via complimentary white glove delivery. After it arrives, you can take up to a year to decide if it is the right fit for you. If it isn’t, you can return it for a $99 processing fee. However, if you keep it, you can rest easy knowing your mattress is covered by a lifetime warranty.
We should also note that, unlike most other mattresses on the market, the Rx isn’t a bed in a box. That means it comes to your door unrolled and uncompressed, which can lead to stronger durability.

What Is Saatva RX Made Of?
To get an up-close look at the Saatva Rx, we used a box cutter to open a section of the mattress’s side. While this has an exciting, rebellious air to it, I caution you not to do this at home because it will void your warranty.
“This mattress has some very unique materials,” said product tester Erin. “The coils look different than any other mattress I’ve tested. They are very large and have memory foam on top.”

Cover – The Saatva Rx has a quilted organic cotton cover that provides breathability and adds a plush feel to the mattress’s surface. The cover is treated with Guardin, Saatva’s proprietary botanical antimicrobial treatment. Additionally, it has a fire barrier made with plant-based thistle pulp in lieu of fiberglass or chemical flame retardants.
Zoned Support Layer – In the middle section of the mattress is a half-inch gel-infused memory foam strip, which draws heat away from the mattress’s surface and provides extra support and pressure relief around the lumbar region.
Comfort Layer – The Saatva Rx has an unusual comfort layer, consisting of a 1-inch microcoil layer encased by a 2 ¾-inch high-density foam layer. This combination of foam and microcoils creates a comfortable, but highly supportive feel.
Support Layers – Saatva Rx’s Therapeutic SupportCore features the company’s proprietary Rx Wave-Tech Foam layer, which offers a unique combination of responsiveness and contouring. It’s designed with zoned areas that relieve pressure points around the shoulders, hips, and back. It’s also infused with cooling elements to help with temperature regulation.
This layer rests on top of durable 8-inch individually wrapped, recycled steel coils. It also features caliper spring coils along the left and right sides for increased edge support.
Base Layer – The mattress rests on a supportive foam base that helps stabilize the individual coils.

Saatva Rx Mattress Firmness
Now that you have an Rx synopsis, let’s get down to the details. Firmness is a word closely associated with mattresses, but what does it actually mean? Simply, it is how hard or soft a bed feels. However, there is some nuance within that explanation, as your body weight and preferred sleeping position can both affect how firm a bed feels to you. To help mitigate this ambiguity, we developed a firmness scale that allows us to rate a bed from 1 to 10, with a 1 being like sleeping on a marshmallow and a 10 akin to snoozing on a concrete slab. Considering there isn’t much demand for either of these extremes, mattresses tend to fall between 5 to 9, and we consider a 6.5 to be medium-firm.

To control for body weight when assigning a mattress firmness score, we average firmness ratings from one tester who weighs under 130 pounds, another who comes in between 130 to 230 pounds, and yet another who is over 230 pounds. The Saatva Rx fell at the widely appealing 6.5 firmness for most of our testers when they were on their back. We saw slight firmness fluctuations when a tester turned to their side and stomach, with the Rx feeling slightly firmer (7 out of 10) for side sleeping and a smidge softer (6 out of 10) when folks were prone.
Overall, the mattress offers a pleasant mix of comfort and support to create a balanced, medium-firm feel. While lying on the bed, I experienced plushness and cushioning from the quilted cover and upper foam layers, but felt firmly supported by the coils below. I think the unique design of this bed, with features like micro coils and the foam caps on the pocketed coils, contributes to this very balanced feel.

Saatva Rx Mattress Performance
While firmness is often the star of the show, the performance of the supporting cast determines whether it’s a bed blockbuster or a mattress flop. To provide a more intensive and comprehensive breakdown of the Rx, I put a queen-size model through a series of tests in categories such as cooling, pressure relief, motion isolation, and responsiveness.
Saatva Rx Pressure Relief Performance
We use the term pressure relief a lot, but what exactly does it mean? When it comes to mattresses, pressure relief refers to a bed’s ability to distribute a sleeper’s body weight evenly. If one area, such as the shoulders, hips, or lower back, is bearing more weight than others, pressure is likely to build up, potentially leading to pain and discomfort.
Considering that Saatva states that the Rx was explicitly designed for those with chronic joint and back pain, I had big expectations of its pressure relief performance. After seeing the pressure maps and hearing the evaluations of our three testers, I believe the Rx’s pressure relief capabilities deserve a lengthy standing ovation.
It is almost unheard of for a mattress’s pressure relief to be equally praised by lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight sleepers, but that’s just what the Saatva achieved. It earned a perfect 5 in back pressure relief, meaning that all three testers gave it a perfect score on this feature, and a 4.5 in side pressure relief.

The only mild ding came from my colleague, Caine Wilkes, who represented sleepers over 230 pounds. He gave it a 4 out of 5 on side pressure relief for heavyweight sleepers because he felt some mild pressure on his shoulder. He said this was fairly common, and he didn’t find it bothersome.

In an effort to get more objective data on pressure relief, we also had each tester lie on a specialized mat rolled on top of the mattress, which provides us with color-coded thermal images showing where pressure is being felt on the body. Blues and greens indicate little to no pressure points, while a yellow to red color scheme means the tester feels a lot of pressure. This mat also gives us an overall pressure reading in pounds per square inch (PSI).
All images captured when sleepers were on the Rx show blues and greens, corresponding with their subjective evaluations. Also, Riley’s side PSI was 13.69, which is well below the mattress average of 14.94 for side sleeping and further evidence of the Rx’s superior pressure relief.
Motion Isolation
Sharing a bed with my husband is like being trapped in an endless loop of a Crash Bandicoot game. He gets more exercise in his sleep than most people do during an intense Peloton ride, so when I’m testing a new bed, I always hone in on its ability to contain or dampen movement. We evaluated the Rx’s ability to isolate motion to one side of the bed in two parts — the water ripple evaluation and a partner simulation test.
Ripple Test: Erin filled a large, clear container with water and placed it on one side of the bed. First, she got in and out of bed, and then she rolled and repositioned as a partner would. The water barely moved during either test, earning it a 5 out of 5.
Partner Test: For this portion of the motion isolation evaluation, I lay on one side of the bed while Erin simulated a partner climbing into bed and getting up in the middle of the night for a bathroom break. I could barely tell when she went through either of these movements, nor when she got in bed and changed positions. I am a notoriously light sleeper and would gladly sleep in this bed with my husband, ol’ Crash Bandicoot himself.
Saatva Rx Responsiveness
The testing team and I performed several responsiveness tests to see how it reacted when weight was applied, which is just a fancy way of saying we wanted to see how easy it was to move about on the Rx. A mattress’s responsiveness is particularly important to combination sleepers, sexually active folks, and anyone dealing with chronic pain or mobility issues.
Switch test: This is a simple test that measures how easy or difficult it is to switch positions. After practicing tossing and turning on the bed, Erin said, “I was able to easily roll around the mattress, but the plush topper does give you a little more difficulty than normal to switch positions.” She gave the Rx a 4 out of 5 on this test.
Responsiveness test: To see how long it takes a mattress to regain its full shape after weight is applied, we set a 54-pound kettlebell on the mattress for 7 seconds, removed it, and then recorded how long the mattress took to regain its shape. It took the Rx .57 seconds to return to its original size. We considered this a good response and gave it 4 stars.
Sinkage test: The sinkage test also uses the kettlebell, but this time, we measured how far it pushes the bed down with a ruler. The Saatva sank 4.5 inches, which we categorize as excellent sinkage, earning it a perfect 5.

Bounce test: To see how much bounce you’ll get on the Rx, we hoisted a weighted ball 6 feet in the air and dropped it onto the mattress. We took a slow-motion video to note where the bottom of the ball hit on the tape measure on the wall. When we dropped the ball on the Saatva, it bounced back a phenomenal 24 inches, easily grabbing a 5 out of 5 in this category.
Saatva Rx Cooling
I am always on a quest to be the perfect temperature, which is no more so when I sleep. However, I don’t make this easy when I go to bed because I always sleep under a heavy comforter. We use a subjective feel test and an objective thermal gun reading to determine if you will likely wake up a sweaty mess or a cool cat.
Before lying on the mattress for 5 minutes, Erin measured the bed’s surface temperature, noting that it was 68.7 degrees. When she got on the bed, she noted that although it wasn’t cool to the touch, it was “really breathable and comforting”. She further said, “I didn’t notice it heating up while I lay there. I felt like it remained the same temperature for the full 5 minutes. So, I was shocked to see the temperature had gone up almost 10 degrees.”
Ultimately, we rated this bed as only “average” for cooling, but you will likely still sleep comfortably on it unless you are a particularly hot sleeper.

Saatva Rx Edge Support
Good edge support is often the unsung hero in a mattress’s performance. If your bed has solid edge support, you probably rarely think about it. However, if it’s less than stellar, it can wreak havoc. A Saatva customer service rep told me that better edge support was one of the main reasons for the Rx’s update. Therefore, I was eager to see how it compared to the old mattress. To ensure that we have the full scope of a bed’s perimeter strength, we performed the following three tests:
Seated test: For this test, our product expert, Erin, evaluated how easy it was to get in and out of bed. “The mattress is thicker, and I have to hop to get on the bed,” she said. “To get my feet planted on the ground, I have to prop myself on the edge rather than settle into a full seated position, and I am straining a little to keep myself in this position. However, support still feels very weak, with my bottom entirely on the bed and my feet not flat on the floor. The edge feels like it fully collapses under me, and I don’t feel secure.”

The Rx only earned a 2 on this test, and we wouldn’t recommend it for those with mobility issues that make it difficult to get in and out of bed.
Full body test: Fortunately, the Rx bounced back during Erin’s full-body edge support test. For this one, she lay close to the edge in different sleeping positions to see how secure it made her feel. She said that her weight felt equally distributed when she scooted close to the perimeter, and she couldn’t feel any difference in support from the center to the edge.
The Rx earned a respectable, albeit somewhat average, score of 3.5 in overall edge support. However, this new mattress iteration earned a lower score in this category than the old one did. While it seems that upgrades were made to how well the edge of the bed supports you when you’re lying down, there are still seated edge support issues that need to be addressed.
Saatva Rx Mattress Performance for Couples
If you share a bed with a partner, it’s crucial to find a bed that matches both of your needs as closely as possible. Firmness is a solid starting point. If you have different firmness desires, the Rx’s middle-of-the-road designation may be an excellent way to compromise.
Dr. Dasgupta said, “It is vital that those who share a bed get one that isolates motion well. This is especially true if you’re a light sleeper or sleep with a particularly restless partner. A mattress with good motion isolation can help both people get a good night’s rest.” The Rx has excellent motion-dampening capabilities. So if, like me, you sleep with a restless partner, this may be the right mattress for you.
Last but not least, if you and your partner are sexually active, you’ll likely appreciate how the Rx’s high responsiveness allows you to change positions fairly easily.
Other Performance Factors to Consider
There are also some additional factors that you’ll want to consider. Some of these factors aren’t important to all sleepers, and others, HR has made it clear that we simply can’t test them in our studio. However, we did want to give you a breakdown of how the Saatva Rx performs in categories such as:
Sex
While the Rx wouldn’t be my top choice for an intimate moment, I certainly wouldn’t move to the floor to avoid it. The mattress is fairly responsive, meaning you aren’t likely to experience clunky stops and starts if you are moving from one position to the other. Although this mattress is highly supportive when you’re in the center of it, if you like to move around and use the whole mattress surface, you will notice that that level of support isn’t maintained on the outskirts.
Noise
A squeaky or huffing-puffing bed may qualify as my personal Tell-Tale Heart, and I definitely don’t want to invite that into the bedroom with me. When Erin tested the Rx for noise, she reported that she didn’t hear any squeaks or air exhalation when changing positions, but she noticed a slight thud because the mattress topper was so thick. My family claims that I can be awakened by the sound of a butterfly landing on my bedroom window, and I have no concerns about noises from this bed waking me up.
Base Compatibility
Although the Rx is slated as adjustable base compatible, we didn’t find this to be the case. It’s 15 inches thick and Erin said, “You feel like you’re going to get scrunched in the mattress when it’s on the TV or read setting.” It was more enjoyable when we tried more subtle inclines, but overall, we didn’t like this bed on an adjustable base. There was also a good bit of gapping between the bottom of the mattress and the base, even when two people were on it. The foot of the mattress hung off the base when it was inclined.
Durability
The Rx is made with top-shelf materials, and it comes with a lifetime warranty, which is often a great indicator that the brand stands by its product and craftsmanship. Also, my colleague Ashley Uhl has been sleeping on this mattress for about a year. I asked her if she thought it was made with quality materials and if she would consider buying it again. She said, “Oh yes! I will definitely buy it again. It’s a great brand, and I can tell that the materials are top of the line. It’s much more comfortable and supportive than any mattress I’ve ever owned before.”

Saatva Rx Sleeping Position and Body Weight
Erin represented the largest group, average-weight sleepers, to evaluate how the Saatva Rx performed with different body types and sleep positions. Riley and Caine gave their thoughts on lightweight and heavyweight sleepers, respectively. Dr. Tedesco also gave us his thoughts on the type of sleepers he thinks would be a good fit for the Saatva Rx.
Before we dive into our recommendations, though, we want to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 230 pounds).
As a general takeaway, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average-weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average-weight sleepers and tend to sink into the mattress more. As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress, while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.
Is the Saatva Rx a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers should snooze very well on the Saatva Rx. Riley said, “I feel very aligned when I am on my back. There is nice cushioning in my lower back that adds some lumbar support. My upper back feels really supported. Overall, I think this is a great pick for lightweight back sleepers.”
- Light Side Sleepers – Riley said that she felt relaxed and comfortable when she was on her side. “I am getting a lot of plush cushioning around my shoulders and hips, and I am not experiencing any discomfort anywhere.”
- Light Stomach Sleepers – Stomach sleepers typically need a smidge more firmness than the Rx provides. However, given its supportive nature, lightweight sleepers like Riley shouldn’t sink too far into this mattress, keeping their hips elevated and spines aligned. This should be a good choice for these sleepers.

Is the Saatva Rx a Good Mattress for Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 pounds)?
- Average-Weight Back Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers should thoroughly appreciate this bed. “I absolutely love this mattress when I am on my back,” Erin said. “The pillow top fills every area of my body while the support boosts the heavier sections, like my hips. This is probably one of my favorite mattresses I’ve ever tested.”
- Average-Weight Side Sleepers – Although Erin reported a little pressure around her shoulder, that was by no means a dealbreaker. She said that she thought average-weight side sleepers would really appreciate this bed because it cushions and comforts her body, but still keeps her spine in a comfortable neutral position.
- Average-Weight Stomach Sleepers – Erin said that the Rx felt a little softer when she was on her stomach than it did on her back or side, but that she was still extremely comfortable. She appreciated the cushion of the pillow top and how the coils kept her hips elevated and her weight equally distributed.
Is the Saatva Rx a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 230 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – “The first thing I noticed was how plush this mattress is,” Caine said. “I’m having some lower back pain right now, and this bed is definitely helping. My spine is aligned. I think it is an amazing bed for back sleepers.”
- Heavy Side Sleepers – Caine was a little surprised by how cushiony this mattress felt because of its support. “I feel a little bit of pressure on my shoulder, but that is common for me, and it isn’t a bothersome amount on this mattress,” he said.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – Even with its premium support system, I wouldn’t recommend this bed for larger-bodied stomach sleepers. They will likely sink too quickly, leaving their back in an uncomfortable u-shape.
Dr. Tedesco, an average-weight back sleeper, highlights this bed for others in the same category. “I feel very neutral in the pelvis, maybe even a slight posterior tilt,” he said. “I feel supported and weightless at the same time. If you have some lumbar, hip, or knee arthritis, you’re going to feel great pressure relief on this bed. My feet don’t roll out when I’m on my back, which means my back is in good alignment.”

My Final Thoughts About the Saatva Rx Mattress
Now that we’ve covered all the tests, I’ll recap this review of the Saatva Rx with my final recommendations of who should and shouldn’t consider buying the Saatva Rx.
Who I Recommend the Saatva Rx For

- Couples
- Those who sleep with restless partners or pets
- Luxury shoppers

Who I Don’t Recommend the Saatva Rx For

Saatva Pricing and Sizing
We understand that budgets vary, and because of this, we always want to be transparent about the cost of mattresses and how the price compares to the competition. Saatva is a luxury brand, and the Rx is its most expensive option. However, a mattress’s value is more than its price tag. You should also consider its durability, warranty, and sleep trial, and the Saatva Rx excels in these areas. The Saatva is offered in the traditional sizes, ranging from twin to king, and including twin XL, split king, and California king.
Check out our breakdown of bed sizes and prices below. Please note that all listed prices are before any discounts.
Size | Dimensions | Price |
Twin | 38″ x 75″ x 15″ | $1995.00 |
Twin XL | 38” x 80″ x 15″ | $2195.00 |

The Big Fig — short for “bigger figure” — is a hybrid mattress specially designed for heavy sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or more. Even though this bed has a firm feel (we rated it as an 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale), its quilted cover and comfort layers offer some plushness.
- Price: The Big Fig is less expensive than the Saatva Rx by about $1,500.
- Sleeping position: The Big Fig is best suited for back and stomach sleepers, although it may also work for some heavy side sleepers.

The Helix Midnight Elite has a plush, cloud-like feel but still keeps the sleeper well supported.
- Price: The Helix Midnight Elite is more expensive than the Saatva Rx, by a little more than $300.
- Sleeping position: The Helix Midnight Elite has a supportive but soft feel, making it best for back and side sleepers.

Other Models from Saatva
If you think you want a Saatva mattress but aren’t sold on the Rx, don’t worry. Saatva offers a variety of other mattresses, a few of which I’ll compare to the Saatva Rx below.
Saatva Rx vs Saatva Classic
The Saatva Classic is the brand’s flagship mattress. It is an innerspring mattress with a coil-on-coil construction and plush Euro pillow top. It comes in three firmness levels (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm). We rated the Luxury Firm model as a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, making it just a touch firmer than average.
- Price: The Saatva Classic is less expensive than the Saatva Rx by about $1,300.
- Sleeping position: With three firmness options, the Saatva Classic can work for all three sleeping positions. We recommend the Plush Soft for side sleepers, the Luxury Firm for back sleepers, and the Firm for stomach sleepers.
- Cooling: We found the Saatva Classic to be a fairly cooling option. Its breathable cotton cover and steel coils allow for lots of airflow, although it doesn’t have any special cooling tech.
- Body weight: The Saatva Classic is supportive enough for people of all weights.

Our Review Process
At Sleepopolis, our team of certified sleep science coaches personally tests each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time lying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress.
