Whether it’s too firm, doesn’t offer enough contouring for pressure relief, or you just plain don’t like how your mattress feels, a mattress topper can help you change up the feel of your bed without having to invest in a whole new mattress.
If you’re shopping for a new mattress topper for your king size mattress, here are a few things to take into consideration.
Sleeping Position
As with most sleep products, it’s important to take your primary sleeping position into consideration when shopping for a mattress topper. Most people sleep primarily on their back, stomach, or side — those who frequently switch between positions are called combination sleepers.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers tend to have the most leeway when it comes to shopping for a mattress topper. Generally, the most important thing for back sleepers is to ensure that they feel properly supported and that their spine is aligned as they are sleeping.
If your current mattress feels too soft, you may want a mattress topper made from a high-density memory foam or from latex foam for more support. If your current mattress feels too firm, look for soft, conforming memory foam to fill in your lumbar region and provide pressure relief around the shoulders.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers tend to need a firm, supportive sleep surface to keep their hips from sinking into the bed. Sinking hips will cause the sleeper’s back to bow out of alignment, which can lead to back pain down the road. For this reason, many toppers don’t work for stomach sleepers, as they are generally designed to make the bed feel softer.

Memory foam will usually be the best bet, but there are some softer latex foams or down toppers that can do the trick.

It’s also important to consider what material a mattress topper is made of. Generally, toppers will be made with either a foam block or a down/down-alternative fill. Foam toppers can be made from memory foam, polyurethane foam, latex foam, and other foams. Down toppers are filled with the soft, quill-less feathers from the underbelly of birds and down-alternatives are materials meant to mimic the feeling of down (these are generally synthetic).
Some toppers also feature covers, straps, or skirts, which could be important features, depending on your needs and preferences. Covers can be made from cotton, polyester, bamboo, and a variety of other fabrics. If you sleep hot, a breathable, natural material like cotton or a temperature-regulating fabric like bamboo is a good choice.
Additionally, some toppers feature materials intended to promote cooling. These can include gel infusions, copper infusions, graphite infusions, Phase Change Material, and more.

Thickness, quality of materials, and additional features will all determine the price of a topper.

How thick of a topper you need depends on your sleeping position, body type, and personal preferences.
